    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the 2011 edition of U.S. Geological Survey''s Mineral Commodity Summaries (MCS), which includes information on events, trends and issues for each mineral commodity as well as discussions and tabular presentations on domestic industry structure, government programs, tariffs, 5-year salient statistics and world production and resources. In 2010, the value of mineral production increased in the United States, suggesting that the domestic non-fuel minerals industries, especially the metallic minerals industries, were beginning to feel the effects of recovery from the economic recession that began in December 2007 and lasted well into 2009. Some major mining sectors continued to struggle, however, with no increase in production or value of production.

University of Nevada Press One Shot for Gold: Developing a Modern Mine in

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1978, a geologist working for the Homestake Mining Company discovered gold in a remote corner of California's Napa County. This discovery led to the establishment of California's most productive gold mine in the twentieth century. Named the McLaughlin Mine, it produced about 3.4 million ounces of gold between 1985 and 2002. The mine was also one of the first attempts at creating a new full-scale mine in California after the advent of environmental regulations and the first to use autoclaves to extract gold from ore.One Shot for Gold traces the history of the McLaughlin Mine and how it transformed a community and an industry. This lively and detailed account is based largely on oral history interviews with a wide range of people associated with the mine, including Homestake executives, geologists, and engineers as well as local neighbors of the mine, officials from county governments, townspeople, and environmental activists. Their narratives— supported by thorough research into mining company documents, public records, newspaper accounts, and other materials—chronicle the mine from its very beginning to its eventual end and transformation into a designated nature reserve as part of the University of California Natural Reserve System.A mine created at the end of the twentieth century was vastly different from the mines of the Gold Rush. New regulations and concerns about the environmental, economic, and social impacts of a large mine in this remote and largely rural region of the state-required decisions at many levels. One Shot for Gold offers an engaging and accessible account of a modern gold mine and how it managed to exist in balance with the environment and the human community around it.Trade Review“When people think about gold mining in California, what comes to mind is surely not an open-pit mine on the edge of Napa County, a place known more for its vineyards than its minerals. In one of the first mining histories set almost entirely after 1980, Eleanor Swent’s One Shot for Gold covers the development, operation, and afterlife of the McLaughlin Mine, the last major gold mine operated by the famous Homestake Mining Company. . . . It is rare for a mining history to dig up so much ground from so many perspectives.” —Brian Leech, associate professor of history, Augustana College, and author of The City That Ate Itself “The Homestake Mining Company had many successes during its nearly 125-year history, and the McLaughlin Mine was one of its more noteworthy. With a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, community engagement, and technological advancement, the company set a high standard for modern gold mining. By relying on oral histories gathered as part of Berkeley’s Western Mining series, Eleanor Swent gives a fascinating account of the inception, development, and closing of California’s most productive Twentieth-Century gold mine.” —David A. Wolff, Ph.D., Professor Emeritus, Black Hills State University

  • Smart Water Utilities: Complexity Made Simple

IWA Publishing Smart Water Utilities: Complexity Made Simple

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisToday there is increasing pressure on the water infrastructure and although unsustainable water extraction and wastewater handling can continue for a while, at some point water needs to be managed in a way that is sustainable in the long-term. We need to handle water utilities “smarter”. New and effective tools and technologies are becoming available at an affordable cost and these technologies are steadily changing water infrastructure options. The quality and robustness of sensors are increasing rapidly and their reliability makes the automatic handling of critical processes viable. Online and real-time control means safer and more effective operation. The combination of better sensors and new water treatment technologies is a strong enabler for decentralised and diversified water treatment. Plants can be run with a minimum of personnel attendance. In the future, thousands of sensors in the water utility cycle will handle all the complexity in an effective way. Smart Water Utilities: Complexity Made Simple provides a framework for Smart Water Utilities based on an M-A-D (Measurement-Analysis-Decision). This enables the organisation and implementation of “Smart” in a water utility by providing an overview of supporting technologies and methods. The book presents an introduction to methods and tools, providing a perspective of what can and could be achieved. It provides a toolbox for all water challenges and is essential reading for the Water Utility Manager, Engineer and Director and for Consultants, Designers and Researchers.

Book SynopsisHave you ever imagined giving up your day job and heading for the hills in search of gold? Journalist Steve Boggan decided to do just that when the price of the precious metal scaled dizzying heights in the wake of the global financial crisis. Clueless, and with neither equipment nor experience, Boggan flew to California and followed in the footsteps of the '49ers', miners who fuelled the original Gold Rush of 1849. Along the way, terrified of bears, bubonic plague and rattlesnakes, he met a cast of colourful characters, including a former Navy Seal who risked his life every day and a man who once went on the run for five years in the mistaken belief that he was wanted by the law. In charming and witty prose, gold-fevered Boggan recaptures the excitement, the hopes and disappointments of the hunt, going beyond the story of modern prospectors to give a moving insight into the birth of modern America.Trade Review'Entertaining, informative and interesting…Carefully researched, funny and inspiring'. * The Sun *'Among his fellow miners [Boggan] found acceptance, comradeship and a wealth of personal stories, many tragic but most concealing a golden glimmer of hope beneath the sadness'. * Daily Mail *'A really fascinating, and funny, cautionary tale of the unexpected allure of lives spent in search of "the colour"'. * World Travel Guide *‘The expectation of the prospecting, the excitement of the panning, the thrill of the find… conveys powerfully the extent to which gold transformed America… moving’ * Daily Telegraph *‘A lively narrative history… Boggan is a hugely likeable companion… this book is a romp’ * Spectator *‘[Boggan] has a wonderful time, respectful of men prepared to give up everything in return for very little, but roguish enough to drop the wink on their ornery, old-fashioned optimism’ * Saga *'A perfect mixture of travelogue, history and down and dirty experience, leavened by rich veins of humour and pathos. A gem, or should I say a nugget.' -- Mick Conefrey – author of Everest 1953'Terrific. Pack your bag, grab your pick, and set out with master storyteller, Steve Boggan, for a trip in this highly original travelogue.' -- Daniel Klein – Sunday Times bestselling author of Travels with Epicurus‘Gold Fever is a wonderful mix of history, journalism and good old-fashioned adventure. It is this last aspect that really lends the book a unique appeal; Boggan is not afraid to get his hands dirty, and he shares his experiences and findings with great depth, humour and charisma.' -- Leon McCarron, author of The Road Headed West: A Cycling Journey Through North America‘A well-crafted story with heady fast-forward momentum. A dogged investigator’s obsessive quest for Californian gold, and the backstory of the gold fields.' -- Iain Sinclair, author of London Orbital‘Boggan does a good job relating this story’ * Independent *"Steve Boggan takes the reader on an exciting adventure and proves that prospecting is as much about digging for humor and hope as it is finding gold." * Jennifer Pharr Davis, author of Becoming Odyssa: Adventures on the Appalachian Trail *

Whittles Publishing Rudolph Glossop: and the Rise of Geotechnology

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisRudolph Glossop made a unique contribution to the early development of both geotechnical engineering and engineering geology and this volume presents a fascinating and revealing perspective on his involvement by means of selected extracts from personal diaries, letters and journals. From his early experience as an undergraduate and the four years spent in the Gold Coast to the establishment of Soil Mechanics Ltd and his time as director of Mowlems, Glossop became one of the key figures and was involved in many of the key stages in the development of geotechnology. His journal provides a fuller understanding of the Mulberry Harbour, which was a key factor in the success of the D-Day landings in northern France, June 1944; while his diaries give a unique account of the significant challenges that had to be overcome during construction of Derwent Dam, N.E. England. The famous Skempton, in his obituary of Glossop, refers to works of original scholarship, written with the clarity and style of which Glossop was a master - by his own example and by the example of others, he never lost sight of the importance of bringing together the practical and academic aspects of both geology and soil mechanics. A" Ron Williams has painstakingly pieced together a fascinating account of the life and career of an outstanding engineer, and in the process has painted a vivid portrait of Rudolph Glossop and his achievements. Not before time will today's engineers and scientists have the opportunity to appreciate the achievements of one of the key figures in geotechnical engineering.Trade Review'The Early Journals provide a very clear view of the young Glossop, and I found the sections on his time in Africa and his activities during the Second World War particularly fascinating. - a thoroughly engaging read and room is left for a few entertaining social digressions. - I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the often highly personal insights that it affords the reader. This book comes highly recommended to all who have an interest in our profession - ' Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and HydrogeologyTable of ContentsContents: Selected Journals (Royal School of Mines, Introduction to civil engineering, The Gold Coast, The Second World War); Later Journals (Louis Leakey: A portrait, The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute 1955, Highways in Persia 1955-58, North America 1958); Selected Diaries and Letters; Selected Writings (The development of geotechnology, Geotechnology and Geotechnique, Engineering geology and Soil Mechanics, The Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology, The Influence of Karl Terzaghi (The John Mowlem - Siemens Schuckert Partnership, From Theory to Practice in Soil Mechanics. book review, Karl Terzaghi: A personal tribute, The place of site investigation in foundation engineering, The influence of Terzaghi on civil engineering practice in England); Technical Papers: The Early Years (The construction of pavements on a clay foundation soil, Particle-size in silts and sands, Soil drainage with particular reference to road engineering, Soil stability problems in road engineering); Bibliography; references
