  • The Babys Coming

Headline Publishing Group The Babys Coming

Book SynopsisVirginia Howes was a mother of four doing the ironing when she had a revelation. Still broody, but not really wanting to add to her family, she realised that becoming a midwife was her true vocation. It was a long journey to get the education and qualifications she needed, especially with a young family, but she was determined and never doubted her decision. Following her training, she spent two years working within the NHS, but her naturally independent spirit fought against the constraints of the system and fourteen years ago she decided to set up on her own. Virginia works with mothers who want to give birth at home naturally, something which Virginia believes in passionately. 350 births later, Virginia still loves what she does. The Baby''s Coming is Virginia''s memoir and tells the stories of her training as a midwife as well as some of the most memorable births: the most dramatic, the most touching. Virginia particularly remembers the births of her own grandc

Book SynopsisAmity Reed became a midwife to serve women, but the reality of working in over-stretched and underfunded NHS maternity services soon shattered her illusions. She’s not alone – for every 30 midwives that train, 29 will leave the profession. Overdue is both the devastating personal story behind the statistics, and a call for change in the NHS. Real-life stories capture the moments at the heart of midwifery: life, death, birth, tragedy and joy, and are embedded in a clear-sighted examination of what is working – and what isn’t – in maternity services. The result is a book that asks – and tries to answer – questions that are at the heart of many people’s working lives: how can we follow our calling, provide for our families and keep ourselves healthy, if the workplace and its systems are working against us?Trade Review"I felt goose bumps, I smiled, I shed tears. Amity Reed’s descriptions of childbirth and motherhood are the most powerful I have ever read… a masterpiece of joy and trauma that provides a vivid and realistic insight into today’s maternity services." * Sheena Byrom, midwife and author of Catching Babies *"An important book - as long-awaited as its title suggests. This beautifully-written, persuasive and cage-rattling story of love, power, disillusionment and struggle calls us to action and demands that we protect and uplift midwives and other frontline NHS staff so that they can protect and uplift us in our most profound moments of joy and loss." -- Rebecca Schiller, author, journalist and women's rights campaigner

  • Stretched to the Limits: Supporting Women with

Jessica Kingsley Publishers Stretched to the Limits: Supporting Women with

Book SynopsisOur increased knowledge and appreciation of hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) has been making headlines across medical research and practice. Stretched to the Limits is the first text to apply this new understanding directly to midwifery. The book details the effects of hEDS on the different bodily systems, and the implications for pregnancy, labour, birth and postnatally. Midwives and doulas are likely, at some point in their careers, to come across women with this most common sub-type. hEDS affects at least 1 in 5,000 women but they frequently find themselves on a care pathway more suitable for those with other, rarer, subtypes such as classic EDS (cEDS) or vascular EDS (vEDS). Additionally, much of the advice detailed here will also help to support the 20% of the population with more generalised hypermobility. This book is, therefore, essential reading for empowering midwives and doulas to feel confident in their understanding of hEDS, so that they can best inform and support their clients and colleagues with the most appropriate care. It will also provide a valuable resource for those with hEDS to share with their care team and advocate for their needs when planning pregnancy and birth.Trade ReviewStretched to the limits is the missing link in information to families and health professionals alike. It explains the effects of EDS on all the systems of the body, and as a health professional gave me insight and information that was vital to holistic care. -- Linda Ayres, MidwifeThis book is a must-read for anyone with EDS, pregnant or not! I've learnt more from reading Stretched to the Limits than years of searching for answers from doctors and specialists. -- Josie Searle, Mother with EDSThis book is like no other textbook I have read before, it is both informative and reassuring. Offering clear explanations and recommendations for care. It is an essential read for health professionals and Doulas providing support to women with hEDS. -- Karen Mitchell, Infant Feeding Specialist, Birth & Postnatal Doula

Book SynopsisThis is a comprehensive and empowering guide to facilitating a positive pregnancy and birth experience, and ensuring lasting emotional and physical health for mother and baby. Countering increasingly medicalized attitudes towards pregnancy and birth among many healthcare providers, this research-based book discusses the benefits of a more natural approach. It reveals the often undisclosed effects on a child's long-term development of accepted medical practices, such as induction, C-section, surgical interventions and pain-relief medications. It offers advice on how these practices can be avoided, for example with techniques to encourage optimal fetal positioning, by optimising the birth environment, and through drug-free pain management methods. Ultimately, it enables practitioners to support parents in informed, confident decision-making by giving a balanced account of the complex array of options available throughout pregnancy and birth. With invaluable contributions from midwives, doulas, mothers, and doctors, and tried-and-tested advice on sleep, exercise, diet and therapies, this will a very useful reference for anyone working with women and babies. 5 in stock

Book SynopsisGroups for parents, babies and toddlers, spanning the 1001 critical days from late pregnancy up to age two, are an effective way of supporting expectant and new parents by helping them to become more attuned, sensitive and empathic towards their child.Contributors bring together a range of theoretical perspectives to show different ways to facilitate groups that combine mindfulness and psychological insight to promote bonding, attunement and mind-mindedness, and to prevent abuse and neglect. Case examples show a range of techniques that can be used, including baby massage, movement therapy, Video Interaction Guidance, Watch Wait Wonder and psychotherapeutic interventions. Examples include an in-patient mother-baby unit, community and health centres in the UK, to international examples in Greece, Kenya and New Zealand. Chapters illustrate practical and clinical aspects of running groups, the associated challenges, and highlights the importance of professional collaboration in a benign environment.Weaving the Cradle is full of ideas and insights for those already running groups, as well as for those considering it, across health, social care and education settings.Trade ReviewThis book is a treasure trove of inspiring work with parents and babies in groups. I was impressed by the honesty and reflectiveness of the diverse facilitators and families who reveal their feelings of anxiety, disappointment, irritation and joy, their mistakes and successes. If only there were such powerfully supportive groups like this in every neighbourhood. -- Dr Sue Gerhardt, author of Why Love Matters, co-founder of OXPIP (Oxford Parent Infant Project)Here we have a real dynamo of a book which pumps out the energy, commitment and skills of all its contributors. This overview of the many different ways therapeutic groups can provide help and support to vulnerable parents who may be struggling to manage with their baby, or apprehensive about the baby to be, is an inspiration to all those who engage with such parents. This is preventative intervention at its most inventive. Those who work in children's centres, will find this a resource full of the different communities they serve and are so central to. This is relationship-based practice at its best. -- Robin Balbernie, Consultant Child Psychotherapist, Infant Mental Health Specialist, Clinical Director of PIP UKThis is just the sort of record we need of the work done by children's centres and their partners, and the outcomes achieved through this work. -- Karen Walker, Centre Manager, North & North Wast Abingdon Children's CentresThis inspiring book has been skilfully woven by Monika Celebi with the same loving care that each chapter author shows towards the parents and their babies. Indeed a triumph of collaboration, clear writing with great depth, and a joy to read. -- Hilary Kennedy, Educational Psychologist CPsychol, AFBPsS, Video Interaction Guidance (AVIGuk) Practitioner, SupervisorThis valuable manual for practitioners acknowledges that mothering poses both wondrous moments and difficult challenges, especially when baby care reactivates unprocessed visceral residues. Chapters illustrate how multi-faceted 'attachment-based' group interventions increase parental sensitivity, empathy, and mentalization, delivered across venues and continents. -- Joan Raphael-Leff, Psychoanalyst/Transcultural Psychologist and Leader, Academic Faculty for Psychoanalytic Research, Anna Freud Centre, LondonThis is the first book on early years and family interventions to bring together so many different approaches, and to speak both an academic and everyday language, making it accessible to a wide readership, including parents (...) Departing from recent trends in early years work, the authors show no intention of giving 'good parenting' or being didactic. Rather, they show how depth therapeutic approaches have the potential to draw out healthier relationships within families from difficult and/or vulnerable backgrounds (...) The chapters make it impossible to forget the sociocultural context in which work is currently taking place - austerity, cuts, and neoliberal indifference, both to human distress and to the societal roots of such despair. -- Sissy Lykou, UKCP and ADMP registered integrative psychotherapist and dance movement therapist * Therapy Today *Celebi has edited the work of professionals whose backgrounds range from psychotherapy to outreach work focusing on group work with parents and children under five years old. The author Denise Tiran utilizes her own experience as midwife, lecturer, complementary practitioner and successful business woman to share a very insightful and frank step-by-step approach in establishing and maintaining a maternity-related business in a highly competitive market. This book is for any care provider who wants to help pregnancy, childbirth and the postnatal period become a healing experience for those carrying trauma, and to support these survivors with compassion, respect and kindness.Trade ReviewMany women who have experienced sexual abuse find giving birth traumatising. This is an area of maternity care that can cause exacerbation of trauma for women if handled poorly and the opportunity for growth and healing if handled well. Book SynopsisIncreasingly, genomics is having an impact on mainstream healthcare. All health professionals will now be required to understand basic genetic concepts, but the depth of knowledge required will vary according to the role of the practitioner, and the setting in which he or she works. Following the success of Genetics for Healthcare Professionals by Skirton and Patch, which was written for practitioners at foundation level, Applied Genetics in Healthcare approaches the issues of genetic healthcare at a more advanced level and is primarily intended as a handbook for those training or working as genetic specialists. However, the book will also be a useful resource for practitioners who specialize in particular fields of healthcare that require knowledge of genetics in specific topics. Those experienced in genetic healthcare will find the book to be a valuable handbook and a source of references for wider reading. All of the authors have worked extensively in the field of genetic healthcare and have used their experience in both genetics nursing and genetics counseling to create a working handbook that is rooted in clinical practice. Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is to provide a straightforward summary of the knowledge required for examinations in specialist Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Part Two of the examination for Membership of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists would be a good example. The volume is intended as a companion to the highly successful Basic Sciences for Obstetrics and Gynaecology which covers the knowledge required for preliminary examinations. Increasingly, examinations of all types are based on multiple choice questions (MCQ) or structured answer questions (SAQ). No apology is made for the fact that the present book addresses the sort of "fact" which lends itself to testing by this approach. Thus, there is little discussion of speculative or contentious areas, no account of present or future research, and no references. Numerous excellent books are available which cover these topics in a much fuller and more discursive manner, and the present volume does not seek to emulate them. Even the most apparently immutable facts are subject to periodic revision. We have attempted to present the "state-of-the-a.rt": most of the material is generally if not universally accepted. A particular problem arises with numerical information. Frequencies of diseases, frequency of clinical findings, efficiency of diagnostic tests and therapies, have almost always been the subject of numerous different studies, each of which yields somewhat different results.Table of ContentsSection I Obstetrics.- 1 Obstetric Statistics.- Birth Rate.- Maternal Mortality.- Fetal, Neonatal and Postneonatal Mortality.- 2 Diagnosis of Pregnancy and • How to be a Nurse or Midwife Leader

John Wiley and Sons Ltd How to be a Nurse or Midwife Leader

Book SynopsisHow to be a Nurse or Midwife Leader is an indispensable guide for all nurses and midwives who wish to develop and improve their practice as leaders.Trade ReviewLeadership is a well researched and described topic that is relevant to professions throughout health and social care. This book, which was written in collaboration with the NHS Leadership Academy, focuses on real-life experiences of nurses and midwifes who have faced leadership dilemmas. Its strength is its practical approach, based and grounded in academic theory. It starts by looking at identity and self, a vital subject for any leader. Understanding ourselves and how we want to be seen are the foundations of being a good leader and allows for personal development. As a leader, I found the book particularly useful as a reference when encountering difficult or challenging situations. The section on chairing meetings prompted me to reflect on my practice and adapt how my meetings are conducted. The topic of leadership is not a new one but how the book has been set out to address the topic is purely practical in its approach. It allows the reader freedom to reflect on practice and consider how they use their leadership skills in their day-to-day practice so it can be based on academic theory. Overall, this is a thoroughly enjoyable book relevant to health and social care professionals at all levels. - Helen Reeves, operational lead for Walsall and inpatient services, St Giles Hospice, Whittington, Staffordshire October 2018Table of ContentsAuthors vii Contributors viii Foreword by Karen Lynas ix Foreword by Jane Cummings xi Introduction xiii Part 1: Leading myself well 1 Chapter 1: To begin at the beginning … 3 David Ashton Chapter 2: Presence and personal impact 20 Philippa Williams and Jamie Ripman Chapter 3: Surviving and thriving – maintaining resilience 45 James Butcher with additional contributions from Nichola Jacob Part 2: Leading others with skill 67 Chapter 4: Getting my message across 69 John Deffenbaugh Chapter 5: Getting the best out of others 92 Alex Pett Chapter 6: Influencing with integrity 117 Louisa Hardman Chapter 7: Courageous conversations 137 Jamie Ripman and Philippa Williams Part 3: Leading collectively and collaboratively 169 Chapter 8: Moving between the dance floor and the balcony (Heifetz and Linsky 2002) 171 Nicholas Bradbury with additional contributions from Nichola Jacob Chapter 9: Helping to lead the NHS into the future 188 Caroline Alexander Catherine Eden Nichole McIntosh Natilla Henry with David Ashton Michelle Mello Afterword 201 David Ashton Jamie Ripman and Philippa Williams Index 204

  • Pushing for Midwives

Temple University Press,U.S. Pushing for Midwives

Book SynopsisA history of the re-emergence of midwifery in AmericaTrade Review"In her beautifully rendered study of midwifery in Virginia, Craven shows how the rhetoric of 'consumer choice'-a shibboleth of those promoting reproductive rights for women-excludes large segments of the childbearing population. In the best tradition of anthropology, she unpacks an irony, illustrating how our social and economic environment can simultaneously celebrate and constrain women's choices. Great stuff." -Raymond De Vries, Professor, Bioethics/Sociology/Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Michigan and author of A Pleasing Birth: Midwifery and Maternity Care in the Netherlands "Craven makes a convincing case for her claim that a continued commitment to expanding reproductive justice is dependent on finding ways to see, and then to ameliorate, the race and class prejudices that lurk, thinly veiled, below the surface of the push for midwives. The most important contribution of this book is the author's sophisticated and nuanced historical discussion of factors that have shaped struggles over reproductive healthcare in the Unites States." - American Journal of SociologyTable of ContentsAcknowledgments Notes on Research and Activism Introduction: Pushing for Midwives 1 Histories of Struggle 2 The Birth of Consumer Activism for Midwives 3 Midwives in Virginia 4 Mothers in the Legislature 5 "I'm Not Really Politically Active, but ..." 6 Divisive Strategies Epilogue: Beyond Consumer Rights Notes Bibliography Index

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisContrasting the birthing practices of upper-class and indigenous women, this ethnography of the alternative birth movement in Mexico offers new understandings of female empowerment, citizenship, and the commodification of indigenous culture.Trade ReviewVega walks the reader through more than two years of ethnographic work…She is attentive to her own origins as a relatively well-resourced American academic in relation to the communities she studies, exercising a 'hyper-self-reflexivity' to understand the ways in which even subtle differences in appearance, language, and consumption patterns impact social inclusion. * CHOICE *[No Alternative] is a good examination of the other side of humanized birth…this book has many strengths, including its theoretical sophistication and the very important way that Vega reimagines alternative birth and its effect on different bodies and populations. Anyone interested in matters of anthropology of reproduction, race and citizenship, and Mexico would benefit from reading Vega's No Alternative. * Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology *No Alternative is a deeply theoretical and richly ethnographic critique of the relationship between traditional midwifery and the humanized birth movement in Mexico…Vega adds important provocations and depth to scholarly and activist conversations about power in health care in general, and about the intersecting forces that direct flows of knowledge and authority in the field of childbirth in particular. * Medical Anthropology Quarterly *No Alternative offers a sharp and reflexive analysis of contemporary midwifery practices in Mexico…Vega's narrative style is simultaneously sharp and smooth, making reading resemble the experience of watching a detective movie. She takes the reader from one ethnographic site to the next as if they had been seamlessly lived...This strategy gives fluidity to the narrative while also endowing force and clarity to her arguments. * Reproductive BioMedicine and Society Online *No Alternative demonstrates that the study of childbirth is a lens through which one can unearth social realities and analyse the dynamics of inequities under the guise of postmodern, well-intentioned liberation movements…This project accomplishes its goals of demonstrating how women's bodies and their reproductive options (or lack thereof) are sites where race, class and gender are created and transnational economies play out. It makes crucial intellectual interventions in the evolving fields of medical anthropology and transnational feminist studies. * Journal of Latin American Studies *[No Alternative] should be of interest to sociologists teaching classes on reproduction, medical sociology, development, and global and transnational processes. * American Journal of Sociology *[Vega] offers an insightful analysis of the political economy of midwifery networks in Mexico...With precise, careful analysis of newly popularized 'traditional' childbirth practices, Vega illuminates how the celebrated promise of midwifery reifies existing disparities that are derived from an imbrication of colonial legacies and neoliberal market logics... Vega’s exciting field site and her astute scholarship...turns most of the basic premises of the anthropology of reproduction on its head. This is a welcome addition to the recently flourishing critical scholarship on race and reproduction. * Anthropological Quarterly *Table of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Introduction 1. Book SynopsisSexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn and adolescent health (SRMNAH) is an essential component of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Despite a steady drop in maternal and newborn deaths since 1990, hundreds of thousands of women and newborns around the world continue to die each year during pregnancy and childbirth: an estimated 289,000 women and about 3 million newborn babies died in 2013 alone. The vast majority of loss of life is due to complications and illnesses that could be prevented with proper antenatal care and the presence of a skilled midwife during delivery. In recognition of the need to improve such realities and overall SRMNAH, this publication focuses on the availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality of midwifery services and the pivotal role midwifes play within the wider SRMNAH workforce
