Book SynopsisContact urticaria syndrome was first defined in 1975 and since then scientific interest has steadily increased. New cases are continuously being reported furnishing information on novel clinical features. A large number of compounds could be responsible for triggering the syndrome including fragrances, cosmetics, latex, preservatives, flavorings, and disinfectants. However, contact urticaria syndrome is often misdiagnosed in part due to a misinterpretation of its clinical manifestation and lack of knowledge of appropriate testing protocols and diagnostic programs. The latter have to be individualized for each patient based on the substance in question, medical history, possible concomitant disease, and clinical symptoms reported after exposure to the suspected culprit. Contact Urticaria Syndrome explains various aspects of this syndrome. The book discusses its definition, history, epidemiology, and occupational relevance. Book Synopsis If you had an allergy so severe that accidentally eating a forbidden food could kill you in minutes--how would it change your life, and your relationship to food? For people with food-induced anaphylaxis, the severest form of allergic response, simply eating in restaurants, accepting invitations to dinner, going on overnight field trips, or traveling through foreign countries means facing one''s mortality with every meal. In this book, Mark S. Ferrara weaves history, science, and psychology to recount the story of his struggles with allergic asthma and a life-threatening allergy to nuts--and his difficulties living and working in the Far East and Near East--to show how the quest for self-actualization can lead to an acceptance of transience that borders on the mystical. Along the way, he guides parents in keeping food-allergic children safe at home and at school and offers strategies that adolescents and adults may use to negotiate social spaces involving food. 3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book "The Fundamentals of Hypersensitivity and Allergy" comprises of seven chapters and describes the historical perspective, causes and classification of hypersensitivities, which are important in understanding the current issues regarding conditions in which the immune system which normally serves a protective role has a harmful effect. This book describes the original concept of hypersensitivity and allergy and how sensitive individuals respond to different allergens, drugs and other agents, where the body reacts with an exaggerated immune response that ultimately results in tissue damage. The classification of hypersensitive reactions given by Gell and Coombs with the modifications made to the previous classification are described in detail. Different types of hypersensitivities, their process, the contribution of various cells and molecules to normal immune responses and to hypersensitive reactions are discussed separately. The examples for different types of immune responses are described thoroughly to get a proper understanding of the topic. The clinical manifestations of different types of hypersensitivities and their means of prevention, evaluation and management are also depicted in separate chapters with clear insight. Lastly, the airborne allergens responsible for the allergy, different types of aeroallergens, their effects and allergies caused by them are described. The effect of climate change on aeroallergen production, various diagnostic tests for detection of aero-allergy with their prevention and control are discussed in detail separately. The book contains a reasonable number of diagrams, flowcharts and tables. Besides this, various interesting and self-explanatory illustrations are incorporated to make the book useful to the students for whom it is written. The question bank, which includes long answer type, short answer type and multiple choice questions with their answers at the very end of each chapter, is developed to get a full grasp of the topic.Table of ContentsAbout the Authors; About the Editor; Acknowledgements; Hypersensitivity Reaction; Gell and Coombs Classification of Hypersensitivity; Type I Hypersensitivity (Allergy or Immediate Type Hypersensitivity); Type II Hypersensitivity (Antibody-Mediated Cytotoxic Hypersensitivity); Type III Hypersensitivity (Immune-Complex Mediated Hypersensitivity); Type IV Hypersensitivity (Delayed Type Hypersensitivity); Aeroalergens and Their Control; Index; Preface.

  • Autoimmune Diseases and Treatment: Organ-Specific

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Autoimmune Diseases and Treatment: Organ-Specific

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOnly in very recent times have therapies been developed that are specific to a particular manifestation of autoimmune disease, and these have begun to replace the all-purpose remedies of the past 30 years. This volume, which draws on the principles of immunology presented in Volume 1050 (Autoimmunity: Concepts and Diagnosis at the Cutting Edge), extends these concepts to the realm of clinical findings and current therapy for many autoimmune and connective tissue disorders. Both organ-specific and organ-nonspecific diseases are covered, and one section is entirely focused on treatment. Treatments using cytokines, chemokines, cognate receptors, and genetic interactions are particularly prominent in these reports, and attention is also paid to the increasing use of intravenous imunoglobulins and both monoclonal and imunosuppressive agents. A therapeutic void remains, but the work reported on here contributes considerably to the effort to fill that void. NOTE: Annals volumes are available for sale as individual books or as a journal. Quarto Publishing Group USA Inc The Peanut Allergy Answer Book, 3rd Ed.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA revised and updated version of the definitive peanut allergy book. Since the second edition of The Peanut Allergy Answer Book was published in 2006, much additional research has been published in the field of peanut allergy and anaphylaxis, including new diagnostic tests and new vaccines and therapies, including oral desensitization and human trials for Chinese herbal medication. New information has emerged on the risk factors for the development of peanut allergy during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in infant diets, which has led to a paradigm shift in how we think about what to eat and what to avoid. National guidelines for the management of food allergies from the National Institutes of Health were published in 2010. In addition, there has been a great increase in public awareness of the societal impact of peanut allergy such as in schools and childcare facilities, in restaurants, and the food industry. This has led to the publication of national guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for school management of food allergies and anaphylaxis, The Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Management Act of 2011, School Access to Emergency Epinephrine Act, and legislation for restaurant guidelines for food-allergic consumers. The incidence of peanut allergies has tripled in the past ten years and continues to increase, yet the present management of peanut allergy remains largely preventive through avoidance and education. The Peanut Allergy Answer Book, 3rd Edition, contains more than 50% new material, including new chapters such as "Is Early Avoidance of Peanut Good or Bad?"; "Should the Sibling of a Child with Peanut Allergy Avoid Peanuts?"; "Should I Avoid Eating Peanuts and Other Allergenic Foods while Breastfeeding?"; and "At What Age Should Peanuts and Nuts Be Introduced into the Child's Diet?"

Book SynopsisFood allergy is an adverse reaction resulting from an inappropriate immunological response to a food antigen. It usually presents itself as a multi-system involvement. Definitive treatment of food allergy is strict elimination of the offending food from the diet. Symptomatic reactivity to food allergens is generally very specific, and patients rarely react to more than one food in a botanical or animal species. If elimination diets are prescribed, care must be taken to ensure that they are palatable and nutritionally adequate. Patients must have a good knowledge of foods containing the allergen and must be taught to scrutinise the labels of all packaged food carefully. This book examines the effects of food allergies, as well as the various treatments that are available for this condition.

Book SynopsisThe peanut is an important crop grown on over 21 million hectares worldwide. Although peanuts have had an adverse image due to their content in saturated fatty acids, it is important to mention they also are an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals for human nutrition. Unfortunately, peanuts are also one, if not, the most allergenic vegetables and the most common food-related cause of IgE-mediated allergic reactions, mainly in westernised countries. This book will present an up-to-date overview regarding peanut composition, physical characteristics and bioactive properties. The second part will cover peanut and legume allergen characteristics, together with their prevalence. In addition, the therapeutic strategies to treat peanut allergy and the problem regarding the cross-reactivity of peanut and other allergens will be discussed.

Book SynopsisFood allergy is an inappropriate immune response to certain food components. Although its increasing prevalence over the past two decades and potentially fatal consequences have made food allergy a formidable public health issue, there has been no effective therapy to treat food allergy, and patients are compelled to resort to the strict avoidance of allergenic foods and must have rapid access to emergency care in the event of accidental exposure. Chapter One of this book examines food allergy and vaccinations. Chapter Two describes an effective and safe oral immunotherapy using IFN-y for food allergies with advanced concepts in comparison to the current worldwide approach to oral immunotherapy. Chapter Three evaluates the epidemiological studies in tropical regions done on food allergies and compares them with studies done in the United States and Europe. Chapter Four examines the contribution psychology has made to our understanding of how people live with food allergies, examines the evidence for psychological therapies that may help improve patients'' and parents'' lives and highlights avenues for future research.
