Book SynopsisPhoto journalism plays an important role in public life: providing accurate, contextualised information through images. When the camera lens focuses on the most harrowing realities, the photographer becomes the link transmitting the subjects' pain to all other people, thereby in a certain way becoming a spotlight taking some of the darkest sides of humanity out of the shadows. Upfront, both book and exhibition, was created precisely at a time when photo journalists in Spain and Latin America had begun to play an increasingly important role in the world. This book delves further into the work of twenty-three photo reporters from Latin America and Spain, not only the most highly acknowledged, but also others who, though having left behind a more modest mark and theories using more limited means, have helped to keep the their colleagues' commitment and excellence alive. Text in English and Spanish.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisPassage is a site-specific, two-channel video installation, which expands Nujoom Alghanem's experimentation with contemporary Arabic poetry through the language of film. Taking her quintessential 2009 poem, The Passerby Collects the Moonlight, as a point of departure, this installation explores the universal experience of displacement. This Brechtian conflation of reality and fiction, culminating in a scene that depicts Falak arriving at the pavilion in Venice, prompts the viewers to consider the parallelism between the film's three protagonists: the director, the actress and the fictional character. These three women of a similar age share the experience of similar dualities: the hidden and the revealed, fragility and power, belonging and displacement. The experience of passage and duality also permeates the design of the exhibition space, where visitors can enter and exit from either side of the pavilion. A large screen, diagonally positioned at the centre, divides the space into two symmetrical halves. The viewers are invited to engage both with Nujoom and Amal's real process of creating the film and with the cinematographic portrayal of the fictional character of Falak. Text in Arabic.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisStorytelling is at the centre of journalism practice. It is the key for communicating with the audience and it exerts a heavy influence over how news is perceived in the public sphere. In the digital era the way in which journalists tell stories is undergoing a dramatic shift. New media offer new possibilities, while they at the same time stimulate traditional media to search for new venues to convey their stories in an attractive and authoritative way. This volume addresses how journalism tries to find and craft new forms and genres of storytelling. It questions how these transitions stimulate new journalistic practices and shift the institutional function and ethics of journalism. What does it means to tell newsworthy and trustworthy stories in a digital age?

Book SynopsisThis book uses the potent case study of contemporary Taiwanese queer romance films to address the question of how capitalism in Taiwan has privileged the film industry at the expense of the audience's freedom to choose and respond to culture on its own terms. Interweaving in-depth interviews with filmmakers, producers, marketers, and spectators, Ya-Fong Mon takes a biopolitical approach to the question, showing how the industry uses investments in techno-science, ancillary marketing, and media convergence to seduce and control the sensory experience of the audience-yet that control only extends so far: volatility remains a key component of the film-going experience.Trade Review"The author of this book has applied a great many film theories in order to look more deeply into the affective and power dynamics between the film industry and the audience. Her method has established a new landmark for contemporary Taiwan film research." - Iying Wei, *International Journal of Asian Studies*, May 2019Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Chapter One Through the Nexus of Bodies and Things: Introduction Chapter Two Mediated Knowledge: Methodology Chapter Three Bodily Fantasy: Embodied Spectatorship and Object Intervention Chapter Four Sensory Linkage: The Politics of Genre Film Making Chapter Five Intimacy: Internet Marketing as Collaborative Production Chapter Six Indeterminacy: Control and the (Un)productive Body Chapter Seven Mediation and Connections in a Precarious Age: Conclusion Bibliography Index Notes

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe report looks at the current state of the creative economy. It examines the evolving definition of the creative economy and its contribution to sustainable development. Based on a 2021 UNCTAD survey, the report shows how countries govern and promote their creative economies and what national strategies and policies they have implemented. The report looks at the latest data on international trade in creative goods and services and finds that trade in creative goods and services generates increasing revenues for countries, with services having a dominant role. The report presents different measurement frameworks for the creative economy, discusses measurement and data challenges, and presents case studies from developing countries. It also discusses how new and emerging technologies, especially increasing digitalisation since the COVID-19 pandemic, contribute to fundamentally changing creative industries. As requested by the General Assembly resolution 74/198, the report includes a special section on implementing the International Year of Creative Economy and how it advances the 2030 Agenda. The report notes that the concept and definition of the creative economy are diverse, representing countries' cultural diversity, but also due to different economic structures, statistical methodologies, and classification used. It encourages governments to recognise the importance of the creative economy by conceptualizing it based on existing definitions and classifications. The report highlights the importance for countries to map and measure the creative economy and industries, including their contribution to international trade

It is more important than ever for scholars and students of media to keep pace with how, where and by whom media gets made; and how what counts as both 'media' and 'production' are changing. Richly populated with insights from a high quality, international group of established experts and rising stars, this book is an excellent field guide to contemporary and emerging media production studies." Out of stock

Book SynopsisThere is growing awareness about how social media circulate extreme viewpoints and turn up the temperature of public debate. Posts that exhibit agitation garner disproportionate engagement. Within this clamour, fringe sources and viewpoints are mainstreaming, and mainstream media are marginalized. This book takes up the mainstreaming of the fringe and the marginalization of the mainstream. In a cross-platform analysis of Google Web Search, Facebook, YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, 4chan and TikTok, we found that hyperpartisan web operators, alternative influencers and ambivalent commentators are in ascendency. The book can be read as a form of platform criticism. It puts on display the current state of information online, noting how social media platforms have taken on the mantle of accidental authorities, privileging their own on-platform performers and at the same time adjudicating between claims of what is considered acceptable discourse.Table of ContentsTable of contents Preface 1. “Serious queries” and “editorial epistemologies:” How social media are contending with misinformation – Richard Rogers 2. Book SynopsisSome of the greatest works of Russian prose first saw the light in the Russian Herald, the journal founded and edited by Mikhail Katkov: Fathers and Sons, War and Peace, Anna Karenina, Crime and Punishment, and The Brothers Karamazov. Yet because of his conservative politics and his intrusive editing practices, Katkov has been either ignored or demonized by scholars both in Russia and in the West; in contemporary Russia he has been hailed as the “savior of the fatherland” because of his aggressive Russian nationalism. This book studies Katkov’s literary career without vilification or canonization, focusing on the ways in which his nationalism fueled his drive to create the canon of Russian literature as a recognized part of world literature.
