Springer Nature Switzerland AG Lectures in Classical Mechanics: With Solved
Book SynopsisThis exceptionally well-organized book uses solved problems and exercises to help readers understand the underlying concepts of classical mechanics; accordingly, many of the exercises included are of a conceptual rather than practical nature. A minimum of necessary background theory is presented, before readers are asked to solve the theoretical exercises. In this way, readers are effectively invited to discover concepts on their own. While more practical exercises are also included, they are always designed to introduce readers to something conceptually new. Special emphasis is placed on important but often-neglected concepts such as symmetries and invariance, especially when introducing vector analysis in Cartesian and curvilinear coordinates. More difficult concepts, including non-inertial reference frames, rigid body motion, variable mass systems, basic tensorial algebra, and calculus, are covered in detail. The equations of motion in non-inertial reference systems are derived in two independent ways, and alternative deductions of the equations of motion for variable mass problems are presented. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations of mechanics are studied for non-relativistic cases, and further concepts such as inertial reference frames and the equivalence principle are introduced and elaborated on.Table of ContentsVector Analysis in Cartesian Coordinates.- Vector Analysis in Curvilinear Coordinates.- Kinematics.- Newton's Laws, Dynamics and Galilean Relativity.- Systems of Particles and Variable Mass.- One-Dimensional Potentials and Two-Dimensional Central Potentials.- Non Relativistic Collisions.- Continuous Mass Distributions. Springer Nature Switzerland AG Shaken, Not Stirred!: James Bond in the Spotlight of Physics
Book SynopsisHow do James Bond’s X-ray glasses work, the ones he uses to see whether the lady at the roulette table has a pistol concealed in her underwear? Is it really possible to launch oneself into the air and catch up with a plane that is free-falling towards the earth? Or to shoot down a helicopter with a pistol? In this lively and informative book, Germany's boldest physics professor Metin Tolan analyses the stunts and gadgets of the 007 films and even answers the question of all questions: Why does Bond drink his vodka martini shaken, not stirred? Springer Nature Switzerland AG Understanding Acoustics: An Experimentalist’s View of Sound and Vibration
Book SynopsisThis open access textbook, like Rayleigh’s classic Theory of Sound, focuses on experiments and on approximation techniques rather than mathematical rigor. The second edition has benefited from comments and corrections provided by many acousticians, in particular those who have used the first edition in undergraduate and graduate courses. For example, phasor notation has been added to clearly distinguish complex variables, and there is a new section on radiation from an unbaffled piston. Drawing on over 40 years of teaching experience at UCLA, the Naval Postgraduate School, and Penn State, the author presents a uniform methodology, based on hydrodynamic fundamentals for analysis of lumped-element systems and wave propagation that can accommodate dissipative mechanisms and geometrically-complex media. Five chapters on vibration and elastic waves highlight modern applications, including viscoelasticity and resonance techniques for measurement of elastic moduli, while introducing analytical techniques and approximation strategies that are revisited in nine subsequent chapters describing all aspects of generation, transmission, scattering, and reception of waves in fluids. Problems integrate multiple concepts, and several include experimental data to provide experience in choosing optimal strategies for extraction of experimental results and their uncertainties. Fundamental physical principles that do not ordinarily appear in other acoustics textbooks, like adiabatic invariance, similitude, the Kramers-Kronig relations, and the equipartition theorem, are shown to provide independent tests of results obtained from numerical solutions, commercial software, and simulations. Thanks to the Veneklasen Research Foundation, this popular textbook is now open access, making the e-book available for free download worldwide. Provides graduate-level treatment of acoustics and vibration suitable for use in courses, for self-study, and as a reference Highlights fundamental physical principles that can provide independent tests of the validity of numerical solutions, commercial software, and computer simulations Demonstrates approximation techniques that greatly simplify the mathematics without a substantial decrease in accuracy Incorporates a hydrodynamic approach to the acoustics of sound in fluids that provides a uniform methodology for analysis of lumped-element systems and wave propagation Emphasizes actual applications as examples of topics explained in the text Includes realistic end-of-chapter problems, some including experimental data, as well as a Solutions Manual for instructors. Features “Talk Like an Acoustician“ boxes to highlight key terms introduced in the text. Trade Review“The author achieves his stated goal in helping researchers know when their computer simulations might contain errors by using test cases with numerous examples. … well suited for teaching acoustics at the undergraduate and graduate level and is an excellent reference for those interested in the physical aspects of acoustics in strings, membranes, and bars. As such it is a good reference for those interested in speakers and audio technology, musical acoustics, physical acoustics, and a wide range of applications.” (James M. De Gruyter The Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering: for Mechatronics
Book SynopsisThe technical systems we develop today are complicated. The challenges vehicle manufacturers are facinginvolve a combination of the fields of electronics, mechanics, control engineering, telecommunications, computer engineering, and software programming in order to realise the required functionality. This multi-disciplinary field of engineering is called mechatronics, and one of the key disciplines in this field is electronic engineering. Consequently, knowledge of the basic laws and principles of electronic engineering is mandatory for anyone who wants to work in the field of mechatronics. This book therefore explains the fundamentals of electrical engineering with an emphasis on mechatronic systems. Starting with basic laws, the main focus is on circuit analysis, including DC and AC circuits, transient effects, filters and oscillating circuits. Basic circuit elements are introduced as well as more complex semiconductor devices like operational amplifiers, biopolar junction transistors and MOSFET field-effect transistors. Finally, a short introduction to the important field of circuit simulation completes the book. The latest vehicles are classic examples of mechatronic systems. Automotive applications are therefore used throughout the book as examples to demonstrate the application of the discussed topics in a mechatronic environment.

Book SynopsisDuring the last decades completely new technologies for high speed railway vehicles have been developed. The primary goals have been to increase traction, axle load, and travelling speed, and to guarantee the safety of the passengers. However, new developments have revealed new limitations: settlement and destruction of the ballast and the subgrade lead to deterioration of the track; irregular wear of the wheels causes an increase in overall load and deterioration in passenger comfort; and damage of the running surfaces of the rail and the wheel is becoming more frequent. These problems have been investigated in the Priority Programme SPP 1015 supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), with the goal of better understanding of the dynamic interaction of vehicle and track, and the long-term behavior of the components of the system. The book contains the scientific results of the programme as presented at the concluding colloquium held at University of Stuttgart, Germany, 2002.Table of ContentsThe DFG Priority Programme ’System Dynamics and Long-Term Behaviour of Vehicle, Track and Subgrade’.- Invited Lectures.- Vehicle/Track Interaction Optimisation within Spoornet.- Active Suspension Technology and its Effect upon Vehicle-Track Interaction.- Rolling-Contact-Fatigue and Wear of Rails: Economic and Technical Aspects.- Vehicle Dynamics.- System Dynamics of Railcars with Radial- and Lateralelastic Wheels.- Distributed Numerical Calculations of Wear in the Wheel-Rail Contact.- Modeling and Simulation of the Mid-Frequency Behaviour of an Elastic Bogie.- Wavy Wear Pattern on the Tread of Railway Wheels.- Rotor Dynamics and Irregular Wear of Elastic Wheelsets.- Contact, Friction, Wear.- On the Numerical Analysis of the Wheel-Rail System in Rolling Contact.- Experimental Analysis of the Cyclic Deformation and Damage Behavior of Characteristic Wheel and Rail Steels.- Friction and Wear of Tractive Rolling Contacts.- Model-Based Validation within the Rail-Wheel-Subgrade Modeling.- Track Dynamics.- Monitoring the Dynamics of Railway Tracks by Means of the Karhunen—Loève—Transformation.- Combined Modelling of Discretely Supported Track Models and Subgrade Models — Vertical and Lateral Dynamics.- Measurement and Modelling of Resilient Rubber Rail-Pads.- Model-Based Investigation of the Dynamic Behaviour of Railway Ballast.- The Dynamics of Railway Track and Subgrade with Respect to Deteriorated Sleeper Support.- Subgrade Dynamics.- Numerical Model and Laboratory Tests on Settlement of Ballast Track.- Track Settlement Due to Cyclic Loading with Low Minimum Pressure and Vibrations.- Simulation of the Dynamic Behavior of Bedding-Foundation-Soil in the Time Domain.- Dynamic Behavior of Railway Track Systems Analyzed in Frequency Domain.- Experimental and Numerical Investigations on the Track Stability.- Experimental Investigation and Numerical Modelling of Soils and Ballast under Cyclic and Dynamic Loading.- 3D-Simulation of Dynamic Interaction Between Track and Layered Subground.- Rigid Body Dynamics of Railway Ballast.- A Comparative Study of Results from Numerical Track-Subsoil Calculations.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Mécanique des grandes transformations
Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Fluid Mechanics
Book SynopsisThis successful textbook emphasizes the unified nature of all the disciplines of Fluid Mechanics as they emerge from the general principles of continuum mechanics. The different branches of Fluid Mechanics, always originating from simplifying assumptions, are developed according to the basic rule: from the general to the specific. The first part of the book contains a concise but readable introduction into kinematics and the formulation of the laws of mechanics and thermodynamics. The second part consists of the methodical application of these principles to technology. In addition, sections about thin-film flow and flow through porous media are included.Table of ContentsThe Concept of the Continuum and Kinematics.- Fundamental Laws of Continuum Mechanics.- Constitutive Relations for Fluids.- Equations of Motion for Particular Fluids.- Hydrostatics..- Laminar Unidirectional Flows.- Fundamentals of Turbulent Flow.- Hydrodynamic Lubrication.- Stream Filament Theory.- Potential Flows.- Supersonic Flow.- Boundary Layer Theory.- Creeping Flows.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Magnetic Bearings: Theory, Design, and Application to Rotating Machinery
Book SynopsisCompiling the expertise of nine pioneers of the field, Magnetic Bearings - Theory, Design, and Application to Rotating Machinery offers an encyclopedic study of this rapidly emerging field with a balanced blend of commercial and academic perspectives. Every element of the technology is examined in detail, beginning at the component level and proceeding through a thorough exposition of the design and performance of these systems. The book is organized in a logical fashion, starting with an overview of the technology and a survey of the range of applications. A background chapter then explains the central concepts of active magnetic bearings while avoiding a morass of technical details. From here, the reader continues to a meticulous, state-of-the-art exposition of the component technologies and the manner in which they are assembled to form the AMB/rotor system. These system models and performance objectives are then tied together through extensive discussions of control methods for both rigid and flexible rotors, including consideration of the problem of system dynamics identification. Supporting this, the issues of system reliability and fault management are discussed from several useful and complementary perspectives. At the end of the book, numerous special concepts and systems, including micro-scale bearings, self-bearing motors, and self-sensing bearings, are put forth as promising directions for new research and development. Newcomers to the field will find the material highly accessible while veteran practitioners will be impressed by the level of technical detail that emerges from a combination of sophisticated analysis and insights gleaned from many collective years of practical experience. An exhaustive, self-contained text on active magnetic bearing technology, this book should be a core reference for anyone seeking to understand or develop systems using magnetic bearings.Table of Contentsand Survey.- Principle of Active Magnetic Suspension.- Hardware Components.- Actuators.- Losses in Magnetic Bearings.- Design Criteria and Limiting Characteristics.- Dynamics of the Rigid Rotor.- Control of the Rigid Rotor in AMBs.- Digital Control.- Dynamics of Flexible Rotors.- Identification.- Control of Flexible Rotors.- Touch-down Bearings.- Dynamics and Control Issues for Fault Tolerance.- Self#x2013;Sensing Magnetic Bearings.- Self#x2013;Bearing Motors.- Micro Magnetic Bearings.- Safety and Reliability Aspects.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Nonlinear Finite Element Methods
Book SynopsisFinite element methods have become ever more important to engineers as tools for design and optimization, now even for solving non-linear technological problems. However, several aspects must be considered for finite-element simulations which are specific for non-linear problems: These problems require the knowledge and the understanding of theoretical foundations and their finite-element discretization as well as algorithms for solving the non-linear equations. This book provides the reader with the required knowledge covering the complete field of finite element analyses in solid mechanics. It is written for advanced students in engineering fields but serves also as an introduction into non-linear simulation for the practising engineer.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews: "This book describes, besides the physical and mathematical background of finite element method (FEM), special discretization techniques and algorithms which have to be applied to nonlinear problems of solid mechanics. … The book is intended for graduate students of mechanical and civil engineering who want to familiarize themselves with numerical methods applied to problems in solid mechanics. This book applies also to PhD students and engineers working in industry who need further background information on the application of finite elements to nonlinear problems." (Razvan Raducanu, Zentrablatt MATH, Vol. 1153, 2009) “The aim of this book is to describe ‘special discretization techniques and algorithms … for nonlinear problems of solid mechanics’. It is written primarily as a textbook for graduate students of mechanical and civil engineering … the terminology and style are also accessible to researchers with an applied mathematics background.” (Christoph Ortner, Mathematical Reviews, Issue 2010 a)Table of ContentsNonlinear Phenomena.- Basic Equations of Continuum Mechanics.- Spatial Discretization Techniques.- Solution Methods for Time Independent Problems.- Solution Methods for Time Dependent Problems.- Stability Problems.- Adaptive Methods.- Special Structural Elements.- Special Finite Elements for Continua.- Contact Problems.- Automation of the Finite Element Method by J.
