  • Self-compacting Concrete

    Whittles Publishing Self-compacting Concrete

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisDuring the last decade, concrete technology has made an enormous advance through the introduction of self-compacting concrete. This application of nanotechnology in construction provides benefits from the perspective of materials technology and environmental protection and is presenting diverse opportunities to engineers and architects alike. Good quality concrete is compacted, traditionally by vibration. This book defines the key properties that make fresh concrete self-compacting and outlines test methods for its assessment. It covers the basic principles and underlying scientific theory, practical advice for production of SCC and its use in construction practice, and is illustrated by practical case studies and applications. All stages of the self-compacting concrete construction process are reviewed, from selection of materials, mix design and mixing process to transport, placing and finishing. The range of benefits offered go beyond fundamental aspects of concrete quality and productivity; it includes a major improvement in the health and safety of workers.Reductions of noise levels on construction sites, together with utilisation of inorganic industrial wastes such as quarry dusts are additional benefits. Information necessary for maximising the benefits offered by self-compacting concrete is provided, with an emphasis on an integrated approach, in which SCC is already selected in the design stage. Novel structural elements become feasible, in part due to the facility to pump under pressure, and management of the construction process can be adjusted to minimise costs. Significant completed projects are described which illustrate the potential benefits and key aspects of the new self-compacting concrete technology in practice.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction; Self-compacting concrete; Constituent materials; Fresh self-compacting concrete; Mix design; Construction process; Hydration and microstructure; Engineering properties; Durability; Standards and specifications; Benefits of using SCC; Practical applications; References. • Ferroelectric Ceramics: Tutorial reviews, theory, processing, and applications

Birkhauser Verlag AG Ferroelectric Ceramics: Tutorial reviews, theory, processing, and applications

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOne of the fascinating aspects of the field of ferroelectric ceramics is its interdisciplinary nature. This aspect is also a source of difficulty for the people working in the field. In a successful team of ferroelectricians the physics theoretician must understand the sintering technologist, the electrical engineer has to communicate with the crystallographer, the organic chemist will interact with the microelectronics engineer, the electron microscopist should collaborate with the systems engineer. It was the purpose of the summer school on ferroelectric ceramics that took place at the Centro Stefano Franscini (ETHZ), Monte VeritA, Ascona, Switzerland, in September 1991 to help to build bridges between people from the different disciplines and to draw for them, in the form of tutorial lectures, some of the different facets of ferroelectrics. The book is a written version of this summer school. It contains the following subjects: ferroelectric materials, physics of ferroelectrics, thin films, processing of ferroelectrics and their applications. It represents a cross section of topics of current interest. Materials are presented (L. E. Cross) from the point of view of the user, i. e. the tailoring of materials for specific applications. Two reviews address the important topic of ferroelectric domains and domain walls (I. Fousek and H. Schmid). In the part devoted to theory, three subjects of current interest are presented: phase transition in thin films (D. R. Tilley), weak ferroelectrics (A. K. Tagantsev) and dielectric losses (A. K. Tagantsev).Table of ContentsFerroelectric Ceramics: Tailoring Properties for Specific Applications.- Ferroelectric Domains: Some Recent Advances.- Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM) of Ferroelectric and Ferroelastic Domains in Transmitted and Reflected Light.- Phonon Mechanisms of Intrinsic Dielectric Loss in Crystals.- Weak Ferroelectrics.- Phase Transitions in Thin Films.- Ferroelectric Thin Films and Thin Film Devices.- Ferroelectric Thin Film Processing.- Multilayer Ceramic Processing.- Processing of Dielectric Titanates: Aspects of Degradation and Reliability.- Ferroelectric Devices.- Multilayer Piezo-Ceramic Actuators and their Applications.- Ferroelectric Sensors and Actuators: Smart Ceramics.

  • Theoretical Modeling of Epitaxial Graphene Growth on the Ir(111) Surface

Springer International Publishing AG Theoretical Modeling of Epitaxial Graphene Growth on the Ir(111) Surface

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOne possible method of producing high-quality graphene is to grow it epitaxially; this thesis investigates the mechanisms involved in doing so. It describes how the initial stages of growth on the Ir(111) surface are modelled using both rate equations and kinetic Monte Carlo, based upon nudged elastic band (NEB) calculated reaction energy barriers. The results show that the decomposition mechanism involves production of C monomers by breaking the C-C bond. In turn, the thesis explores the nucleation of carbon clusters on the surface from C monomers prior to graphene formation. Small arch-shaped clusters containing four to six C atoms, which may be key in graphene formation, are predicted to be long-lived on the surface. In closing, the healing of single vacancy defects in the graphene/Ir(111) surface is investigated, and attempts to heal said defects using ethylene molecules is simulated with molecular dynamics and NEB calculated energy barriers.Table of ContentsIntroduction.- Theoretical Methods.- Producing a Source of Carbon: Hydrocarbon Decomposition.- Hydrocarbon Decomposition: Kinetic Monte Carlo Algorithm.- Thermal Decomposition in Graphene Growth: Kinetic Monte Carlo Results.- Beginnings of Growth: Carbon Cluster Nucleation.- Removing Defects: Healing Single Vacancy Defects.- Final Remarks.

Book SynopsisThis is the first book to classify and systematize the available data on the behavior of binary alloys under high pressure. Despite the fact that there is a strong correlation between temperature-composition (T-C) phase diagrams at normal pressure and three- dimensional temperature-composition-pressure (T-C-P) diagrams, many material scientists seldom refer to the (T-C-P) diagrams, just as many high pressure researchers often ignore the data obtained at normal pressure. This book aims to bridge the gap between data obtained at high pressure and that obtained at normal pressure. The most recent research covers not only elements and stoichiometric compounds, but also binary, ternary, and multicomponent alloys, and so this book covers an extended range of substances. The properties of 890 binary systems and a further 1153 pseudobinary and ternary systems are summarized, and accompanied by an extensive bibliography. The data includes information on the solubility of components in solid solutions, melting, and first- and second-order phase transformations in alloys and stoichiometric compounds.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisThis volume documents the proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on Particles on Surfaces: Detection, Adhesion and Removal held in Newark, NJ, June 19-21, 2000. The study of particles on surfaces is extremely important in a host of diverse technological areas, ranging from microelectronics to optics to biomedical. This volume contains a total of 28 papers, which were all properly peer reviewed, revised and edited before inclusion. Therefore, this book is not merely a collection of unreviewed manuscripts, but rather represents information which has passed peer scrutiny. Furthermore, the authors were asked to update their manuscripts, so the information contained in this book should be current and fresh. This volume is divided into two parts: 1) Particle Analysis and General Cleaning-Related Topics; and 2) Particle Adhesion and Removal. The topics covered include: surface analysis techniques for particle identification; cleaning, rinsing and drying issues in post-CMP cleaning; fundamental forces involved in particle adhesion; factors affecting adhesion of small (nanosize) particles; factors important in particle detachment; particle adhesion measurement by AFM; various (wet and dry) techniques for particle removal, e.g., laser, ultrasonic, megasonic, use of surfactants; toner particles and pharmaceutical particles. This volume offers a wealth of information on the tremendously technologically important field of particles on surfaces and should provide a consolidated source of current R&D activity in this arena. Therefore, it will be of value and use to anyone interested in the topic of particles on surfaces.Trade Review'...Each paper is well documented with illustrations, photos, charts, data, and references, as appropriate. [...] This book is oriented to those researchers specializing in surface technology and contains appropriate equations and text, and for those researchers, this book is RECOMMENDED.'
