CSIRO Publishing Effective Ecological Monitoring
Book SynopsisLong-term monitoring programs are fundamental to understanding the natural environment and managing major environmental problems. Yet they are often done very poorly and ineffectively. This second edition of the highly acclaimed Effective Ecological Monitoring describes what makes monitoring programs successful and how to ensure that long-term monitoring studies persist.Table of Contents Acknowledgments Preface to Second Edition 1: Introduction Some of the ecological values and uses of long-term datasets Poor record of long-term ecological monitoring Why we wrote this book 2: Why monitoring fails Characteristics of ineffective monitoring programs Other factors contributing to ineffective monitoring programs 3: What makes long-term monitoring effective? Characteristics of effective monitoring programs Little things matter a lot! Some 'tricks of the trade' The adaptive monitoring framework 4: The problematic, the effective and the ugly – some case studies The problematic The effective Need to wait and see The ugly 5: The upshot – our general conclusions Changes in culture needed to facilitate monitoring Good things that can come from non-question based monitoring The role of citizen science in long-term monitoring The challenge of intellectual property and data sharing The challenges in effective monitoring of rare, threatened and endangered species The major challenge of keeping monitoring and long-term studies going The big issue of integrating different kinds of monitoring Approaches to integrate data from different kinds of monitoring Index

Brill Amphibians of Suriname
Book SynopsisSuriname has a long history of faunal inventories, with many of its species already described by Linnaeus. Despite that, the amphibians were only treated in a few papers in scientific journals. Amphibians of Suriname is the first overview of our present knowledge of this interesting group for Suriname. The book presents short descriptions and data on the distribution and natural history of the 104 species now known for the country. Most species are illustrated by one or more photographs, and a distribution map is presented as well. Two new species and two new subspecies of frogs are described for Suriname, and for several species a contribution to the taxonomic discussion is given.Table of ContentsPreface Introduction Geography of Surniname Methods ANURA Family Allophrynidae Family Aromobatidae Subfamily Allobatinae Subfamily Anomaloglossinae Family Bufonidae Family Centrolenidae Subfamily Centroleninae Subfamily Hyalinobatrachiinae Family Ceratophryidae Subfamily Ceratophryinae Family Dendrobatidae Subfamily Colostethinae Subfamily Dendrobatinae Family Eleutherodactylidae Subfamily Eleutherodactylidae Family Hylidae Subfamily Hylinae Subfamily Phyllomedusinae Family Leiuperidae Family Leptodactylidae Family Microhylidae Subfamily Gastrophryninae Subfamily Otophryninae Family Pipidae Family Ranidae Family Strabomantidae GYMNOPHIONA Family Caeciliidae Family Rhinatrematidae Species that may occur in Suriname, but not yet recorded for sure or known from one specimen collected in the far past only Zoogeography Conservation of Amphibians in Suriname Bibliography Appendix Subject Index Common Name Index taxonomic Index

Brill Branchiura: A Compendium of the Geographical Distribution and a Summary of Their Biology
Book SynopsisThis is a compendium of current knowledge about the crustacean subclass Branchiura Thorell, 1864. An overview of the group is presented, starting from the first species description, and reports of taxonomic changes. It also provides a condensed retrospect of each genus and includes the characteristics of each genus, the geographical distribution of each species arranged according to occurrence per continent; and aspects of the anatomy, physiology, host-parasite interactions and phylogeny are discussed. In order to condense the information available on members of the subclass, additional literature sources on each aspect are tabulated. This text will be useful for fish health practitioners, researchers and students of Parasitology and Fish Veterinary Medicine. The contents of this volume were originally published in 2016 in Crustaceana volume 89, issue 11-12.Table of ContentsAbstract Résumé Branchiura Characteristics The genera of the subclass Branchiura Argulus Müller, 1785 Synonyms of the genus Argulus Müller, 1785 Synonyms of the species of Argulus Müller, 1785 Argulus species and their distribution Research conducted on Argulus species Anatomy and physiology of Argulus species Parasite-host interactions in Argulus species Phylogeny of Argulus species Dolops Audouin, 1837 Synonyms of the genus Dolops Audouin, 1837 Synonyms of the species of Dolops Audouin, 1837 Dolops species and their distribution Research conducted on Dolops species Anatomy and physiology of Dolops species Parasite-host interactions in Dolops species Chonopeltis Thiele, 1900 Synonyms of the species of Chonopeltis Thiele, 1900 Chonopeltis species and their distribution Research conducted on Chonopeltis species Anatomy and physiology of Chonopeltis species Dipteropeltis Calman, 1912 Synonyms of the genus Dipteropeltis Calman, 1912 Synonyms of Dipteropeltis hirundo Calman, 1912 Dipteropeltis species and their distribution Research conducted on Dipteropeltis species Acknowledgements Appendix References Taxonomic index Host index
