  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Insuring the Industrial Revolution Fire Insurance

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFire had always been one of the greatest threats to an early modern British society that relied on the naked flame as the prime source of heating, lighting and cooking. Yet whilst the danger of fire had always been taken seriously, it was not until the start of the eighteenth century that a sophisticated system of insurance became widely available. Whilst a number of high profile fires during the seventeenth century had drawn attention to the economic havoc a major conflagration could wreak, it was not until the effects of sustained industrialization began to alter the economic and social balance of the nation, that fire insurance really took off as a concept. The culmination of ten years of research, this book is the definitive work on early British fire insurance. It also provides a foundation for future comparative international studies of this important financial service, and for a greater level of theorising by historians about the relationship between insurance, perceptions of risk, economic development and social change. Through a detailed study of the archives of nearly 50 English and Scottish insurance companies founded between 1696 and 1850 - virtually all the records currently available - together with the construction of many new datasets on output, performance and markets, this book presents one of the most comprehensive histories ever written of a financial service. As well as measuring the size, market structure and growth rate of insurance, and the extent to which the first industrial revolution was insured, it also demonstrates ways in which insurance can be linked into wider issues of economic and social change in Britain. These range from an examination of the joint-stock company form of organization - to an analysis of changing attitudes towards fire hazard during the course of the eighteenth century. The book concludes by emphasising the ambivalent character of fire insurance in eighteenth and early nineteenth century Britain, contrasting the industry's dynamic long-run rate of growth with its more conservative attitude to product design and diversification.Trade ReviewWinner of the 2004 Wadsworth Prize for Business History, awarded by the UK Business Archives Council for the best book in business history. '... meticulously researched... this monograph, the result of over a decade's research, makes a major contribution not only to insurance history, but also to British economic history and, in parts, to the social history of industrialization. With extensive footnotes containing a mine of detailed comparative evidence, Pearson has produced a first-class study of an industry that underwent major structural and cultural changes between 1700 and 1850.' Economic History Review 'Despite its rather obvious importance to modern economic development, the history of fire and property insurance has been largely neglected. Until now that is. Robin Pearson's exhaustively researched and meticulously argued study [...] offers the definitive history of the British Fire Insurance industry through the middle of the nineteenth century. Even more critically, Pearson establishes just how integral property insurance was to the industrial revolution. Insuring the Industrial Revolution is a singular achievement. Robin Pearson demonstrates that fire insurance played a consequential, if sometimes ambivalent, role in the industrial revolution. He also provides a roadmap that future scholars in this area will follow when constructing their own studies of the history of fire insurance. I hope that this fine study garners the wide audience it deserves.' EH.NET 'Pearson has done a superb job [...] to assemble the only truly comprehensive history of the British fire insurance industry to date.' Enterprise & Society 'This is a carefully crafted book that fully achieves its objectives.' • Taylor & Francis Ltd Internal Evaluation in NonProfit Organisations

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFocused on the interpersonal aspects of internal evaluation in non-profit organisations, this book presents practice-based discussions centred on six key topics identified through the authors' experience as evaluation practitioners. Internal Evaluation in Non-Profit Organisations: Practitioner Perspectives on Theory, Research, and Practice is not a step-by-step how-to guide; instead, each chapter unpacks an aspect of internal evaluation in non-profits that is paid insufficient heed in the existing literature. Written by and for internal evaluation practitioners, the book contains a plethora of practical strategies and critical analysis of thought-provoking topics that are of particular interest and importance to internal evaluators in non-profit settings. The authors understand the pressures facing practitioners and non-profit organisations and share their insights around improving evaluation's ability to be efficient, embedded, useful, and meaningful. This bookTrade Review"The co-authors--two incredibly thoughtful internal evaluators--present an extensive set of practical ideas to enhance evaluation practice in non-profit organizations. Building on their own practice and on an understanding of the scholarly literature that grounds internal evaluation, they have produced a highly usable guide that will enable other evaluators to build evaluation capacity both for themselves and for their organizations. I am eager to use this book in my own work." Jean A. King, Professor Emerita, Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development/Minnesota Evaluation Studies Institute, USA"In an era where internal evaluation is gaining unprecedented relevance in non-profit organisations, this guide addresses a niche yet important topic, notably understated in evaluation literature." Auzan Rama Satria, Faculty of Psychology, University of Indonesia; International Society for Third-Sector ResearchChapter Endorsements"It felt really nice to be reading something that speaks so directly to where I am at in the early stages of my evaluation journey. It has given me some useful food for thought." Kate Baker, Evaluation Project Manager, HealthWest (Chapter 2)"These uniquely practical guidelines and reflections are essential to read" Phyo Pyae Thida (Sophia) Htwe, Community Development Evaluator, GraceWorks Myanmar (Chapter 2)"What a complete joy to read this!" Yoland Wadsworth, Professor (Hon), RMIT University, Australia, and author of the best-selling Everyday Evaluation on the Run"The content shows the value of combining research, theory and practice, and the importance of NGOs actively contributing to global understandings by sharing knowledge through publications. Genius!" Stephanie Harrison, Evaluation Consultant, Pandanus Evaluation (Chapter 5)"I was actually quite inspired to use theory more in my work after reading it!" Catherine Malla, Knowledge Management Advisor, The Fred Hollows Foundation (Chapter 5)"This chapter addresses an important topic – the need for all evaluators, not just internal evaluators working in the NFP sector, to do much better at integrating theory/research with practice when planning, conducting and using evaluations." Brad Astbury, Director, ARTD Consultants (Chapter 5)"This is a great practical resource with valuable lessons learnt for guiding how external and internal evaluators can combine their expertise together to conduct evaluations in non-profits." Kathryn Dinh, Director, Lotus Evaluation (Chapter 6)"A practical and useful guide on how to think about utilisation and apply this to data collection and evaluations. Working in M&E in a large organisation with varying knowledge and skills around evaluation utilisation, I found this incredibly helpful!" • Taylor & Francis Ltd Elite Business Schools

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisSocial scientists are paying increasing attention to the business and financial elites: There's a great need to understand who these elites are, what they do, and what makes them tick, as individuals but also as a class. By examining elite business schools, the institutions that train and prepare people to assume important leadership and decision-making positions in business, finance and related sectors, we may also learn how the economic elites are made. A key argument in this book is that elite schools are known to create powerful groups in society, offering them the intellectual and analytical means to act as leaders, but, most importantly, the social, moral and aesthetic skills that are deemed necessary to exercise power; in all essential respects elite schools consecrate people. By dominating much of higher education today, and by doing so in a way that creates and reproduces a market-based organization and control of society, elite business schools represent certain interests Trade Review"Mikael Holmqvist has followed up his fascinating ethnography of Djursholm, a residential community where many of Sweden’s economic elite live, with another in-depth study – this time focusing on the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE). Holmqvist examines the critical role of this higher education institution in moulding Sweden’s future business and financial leaders, illustrating in detail the various mechanisms at work in inculcating a particular set of aesthetic, moral and social norms. The book follows the students’ journey from admission, into the student union, the classroom, the curricula content they have access to, the expectations Faculty members have to work within, and finally the long-term associations formed through strong alumni networks. Holmqvist’s final analysis is persuasive and devastating at the same time: that SSE is a servant of power, legitimising business and capitalism through academic consecration."Claire Maxwell Professor of Sociology, University of Copenhagen.Table of Contents1. What is explored through case studies and personal experience are ideas about how to resist being silenced at work where there are competing demands on your time and energy and where people have learnt to tolerate bad and uncivil behaviours just to get the work done. • Taylor & Francis Organizing Christmas

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOrganizing Christmas is an exploration of the organizational character of Christmas. Taking as its starting point the view that Christmas initially achieved popularity due to its potential to promote social cohesion and political stability, this book both charts and scrutinizes its global emergence as the year's preeminent economic and organizational event.Combining historical narrative, original interviews, and social scientific research and theories, it tells the story of how Christmas has come to dominate the festival landscape and how it emerged as an integral component of the global evolution of contemporary social and economic relations. From the pre-Christian celebrations and politics of the turning of the calendar year, through the power games of Elizabethan England and the wily reinvention of the season by industrious Victorians, to todayâs huge economic and logistical exercise that relies on everything from global supply chains to the domestic division of lTrade Review"We all think we understand Christmas based on our own experiences and memories. It wasn’t until I encountered Hancock’s work that I learned how inadequate my own understandings were, and how surprised the ancient pagans, the early Christians, and even 19th-century merchants would have been with how Christmas continues to evolve and its varied roles in our lives. You will be fascinated and challenged by what you read here (and incidentally and importantly, I still believe in Santa Claus, of course)." Professor Jean M. Bartunek, Boston College, USA"This book is unique, fascinating and thought-provoking. It provides a comprehensive overview of Christmas as a global phenomenon, followed by a critical analysis that places it within an organizational context. The book is a must-read not only for those interested in Christmas but also for those engaging in broader conversations about organization and organizing." Dr José-Carlos García-Rosell, Associate Professor, University of Lapland, Finland"Christmas is capitalism in all its needy madness, but in this beautiful book, Hancock shows us why even the most miserable should pay it some serious attention. He both enchants and dissects the festival at the same time, showing the labour of Santa and the engineering of magic. I would be pleased to give this book to someone as a present. Just not at Xmas." Professor Martin Parker, University of Bristol, UK"The best science engagements are those that highlight the amazing weirdness of that which we take for granted. Professor Hancock’s book is exemplary social theory, and cunningly unpacks (sic) and problematizes the Christmas that we all know and thought we loved. This is social science at its finest!" Book SynopsisThis volume has as its primary aim the examination of issues concerning executive function and frontal lobe development. While many texts have addressed these issues, this is the first to do so within a specifically developmental framework. This area of cognitive function has received increasing attention over the past decade, and it is now established that the frontal lobes, and associated executive functions, are critical for efficient functioning in daily life. It is also clear, and of particular relevance to this text, that these functions develop gradually through childhood, and then deteriorate during old age. These developmental trajectories, and the impact of any interruption to them, are the focus of this volume.Table of ContentsPart 1. A Developmental-Theoretical Framework for Executive Function. P.J. Book SynopsisThe regulation of modern civil aviation can be traced back to the later years of the Second World War. An intense debate about the future regulatory regime resulted in a compromise which to this day essentially dictates the structure of the global airline industry. Further progress towards normalising' the industry appears to be slowing down, and perhaps even going into reverse. Without an understanding of the development of regulation, it is not possible to understand fully the industry's current problems and how they might be resolved. Many books have been written about the development of international air transport, covering deregulation, privatisation, the emergence of new business models among other things, but few if any have taken a broad view of the trends which have determined the industry's current structure. The Regulation of Air Transport charts the development of aviation from the end of the Second World War to the present day, following the key trends anTrade Review'This book is an excellent history of the major changes since World War II that have shaped today’s commercial aviation world.
