  • Brill Marking Time: Derrida Blanchot Beckett des Forêts Klossowski Laporte

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDrawing on the work of Jacques Derrida, Marking Time presents an innovative account of literary time, in which the temporality and ontology of the literary are seen to be essentially intertwined. Individual chapters trace the stakes of this view of time for the status and ‘economy’ of the literary text across five 20th-century writers in French whose work is characterized by a fundamental and searching self-questioning: Maurice Blanchot, Samuel Beckett, Louis-René des Forêts, Pierre Klossowski, and Roger Laporte. A final chapter draws on these analyses to develop an inherently unstable figure of ‘saving time’, which has important repercussions for how we conceive of literary value. - Idola Quintana Domínguez, Les Lettres romanes "Ian Maclachlan's Marking Time is a very significant critical, theoretical, and scholarly achievement." - Ian James, MHRATable of ContentsAcknowledgements Preface: Questions of literature and time Marking time with Jacques Derrida Différance and the economy of the book The gift and literature’s chance of a future Performative, event, sequence Marking time and narrative time Time returning: Maurice Blanchot Time of the récit Au moment voulu The obstinate time of testimony: Louis-René des Forêts Still time: Samuel Beckett Making time for each other: Pierre Klossowski Fugal time: Roger Laporte Saving time: an invaluable offering Bibliography Index

  • Brill Reading Coetzee

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisJust as J. M. Coetzee’s post-2003 books present essays and narrative alongside one another, this book engages with its ideas through both critical and creative writing. Reading Coetzee interleaves critical essays on Coetzee’s works with an autobiographical narrative detailing MacFarlane’s more personal response to her reading and writing. The presentation of elements of the creative with the critical, and the critical within the creative, aims to challenge the traditional boundary between the two. This kind of methodology derives from the idea (and practice) of embodiment: that an idea or philosophy does not ‘float free’, but is tied to the idiosyncrasies, divergences, and subjective ‘travel’ of its speaker or writer. Coetzee’s Elizabeth Costello, Slow Man and Diary of a Bad Year explicitly address themes which abide more surreptitiously throughout his oeuvre: the divisions and paradoxes which occur the moment pen gains page, the value of literature, and the ethics of embodiment. In revealing the dialogue between writer-self and reader-self, and between author and character, these recent novels invite a rereading of Coetzee’s previous literature. Reading Coetzee explores Coetzee’s preoccupation with the act of writing using his recent books as a lens through which to view his eight previous novels as well as his memoirs and essays.Trade Review”My impression is that this is a significant and daring work. It is a rare and refreshing pleasure to read an academic book where the writer is willing to put herself on the line, not only through her assessment of someone else, but by writing stories and creative non-fiction that relate to her main line of investigation. (It turns out that some of those who teach also can do). This makes everything matter to the reader because it all clearly matters to and affects Elizabeth MacFarlane. Her enterprise is not a pursuit of status but a pursuit of understanding and fuller living.” – Per K. • Brill Le roman de la création: Écrire entre mythes et pratiques

    Out of stock

? Book SynopsisIn 1930, when Rabindranath Tagore met Paul and Edith Geheeb in Germany, they formed a fruitful and long-term association resulting in the exchange of ideas and vision. Tagore''s Brahmacharya Ashram, founded in 1901 in Shantiniketan, and the Geheeb''s Odenwaldschule, established in Germany in 1910 (thereafter the Ecole d''''Humanité in Switzerland, established in 1934 after the couple fled Nazi Germany), emerged from vastly different cultural backgrounds and social exigencies. Yet, they recognized striking similarities between their educational endeavours. The meeting also initiated a close association between India and Germany, with the Geheebs attracting many Indian intellectuals and Indophile Germans to their schools. This book explores the areas where the lives of the Geheebs and Tagore, and their respective circles, overlap. Rather than being a biography, a history, or a comprehensive description, this study is a comparison of Tagore and the Geheebs and their schools. • Transcending the Postmodern The Singular Response

Taylor & Francis Ltd Transcending the Postmodern The Singular Response

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisTranscending the Postmodern: The Singular Response of Literature to the Transmodern Paradigm gathers an introduction and ten chapters concerned with the issue of Transmodernity as addressed by and presented in contemporary novels hailing from various parts of the English-speaking world. Building on the theories of Transmodernity propounded by Rosa MarÃa RodrÃguez Magda, Enrique Dussel, Marc Luyckx Ghisi and Irena Ateljevic, inter alia, it investigates the links between Transmodernity and such categories as Postmodernity, Postcolonialism and Transculturalism with a view to help define a new current in contemporary literary production. The chapters either follow the main theoretical drives of the transmodern paradigm or problematise them. In so doing, they branch out towards various issues that have come to inspire contemporary novelists, among which: the presence of the past, the ascendance of new technologies, multiculturalism, terrorism, and also vulnerability, interdependence, solidarity and ecology in a globalised context. In so doing, it interrogates the ethics, aesthetics and politics of the contemporary novel in English. Trade Review"This book stands out as an unyielding and timely repositioning of paradigms in the domains of philosophy, aesthetics, literary criticism and cultural theory through the lens of contemporary literature in English…the ten chapters of the book succeed in producing a close view of how themes such as postcolonialism, subalternity, eco-criticism, feminist criticism, etc. fall into the transmodern pattern."
