Book SynopsisStudying education and learning in the formative period of Islam is not immediately easy, since the sources for this are relatively late and frequently project backwards to the earlier period the assumptions and conditions of their own day. The studies in this volume have been selected for the critical approaches and methods of their authors, and are arranged under five headings: the pedagogical tradition; scholarship and attestation; orality and literacy; authorship and transmission; and libraries. Together with the editorâs introductory essay, they present a broad picture of the beginnings and evolution of education and learning in the Islamic world.Trade Review'[Gilliot] provides an excellent overview of the history of Western scholarship on Islamic education and surveys the results reached under the topical sections of this collected work. In addition, he provides a substantial bibliography on pre-modern Islamic education in general, including references not only to Western scholarship on the topic but also to the main works in Arabic.' Book SynopsisThe last decades have witnessed a major resurgence of interest in the Arabic grammatical tradition. Many of the issues on which previous scholarship focused - for example, foreign influences on the beginnings of grammatical activity, and the existence of grammatical schools - have been revisited, and new areas of research have been opened up, particularly in relation to terminology, the analytical methods of the grammarians, and the interrelatedness between grammar and other fields such as the study of the Qur''an, exegesis and logic. As a result, not only has the centrality of the Arabic grammatical tradition to Arab culture as a whole become an established fact, but also the fields of general and historical linguistics have finally come to realize the importance of Arabic grammar as one of the major linguistic traditions of the world. The sixteen studies included in this volume have been chosen to highlight the themes which occupy modern scholarship and the problems which face it; whTrade Review’All in all, this book is a very welcome addition to the tools available for acquainting oneself with the medieval Arab scholars' view of their language, and one for which sincere gratitude is owed to its editor.’ Journal of Islamic Studies ’Baalbaki provides a masterly account of the problems connected with the search for the origins of Arabic grammar and of the pitfalls of any dogmatic approach taken in this search.’ Historiographia Linguistica ’In keeping with the underlying philosophy of the series, the volume under review is a remarkable eye opener into the state of current episteme on Arabic grammar, and will indubitably serve as a reliable launching pad for further investigations...’ Asiatische StudienTable of ContentsContents: General editor's preface; Introduction. The Beginnings of Arabic Grammar: The origins of Arabic grammar, M.G. Carter; The logic of Ibn al-Muqaffa` and the origins of Arabic grammar, Gérard Troupeau; Grammar and exegesis: the origins of Kufan grammar and the Tafsir Muqatil, Kees Versteegh; On the Greek influence on Arabic grammar, Frithiof Rundgren; Schacht's theory in the light of recent discoveries concerning the origins of Arabic grammar, Rafael Talmon; Indian influence on early Arab phonetics - or coincidence?, Vivien Law. Analytical Methods of the Grammarians: Language and logic in classical Islam, Muhsin Mahdi; Aspects of debate and explanation among Arab grammarians, Georges Bohas; The relation between nahw and balaga: a comparative study of the methods of Sibawayhi and Gurgani, Ramzi Baalbaki; The fundamental principles of the Arab grammarians' theory of `amal, Aryeh Levin; The notion of `illa in Arabic linguistic thinking, Yasir Suleiman. Book SynopsisOnce a work is completed, when and how do writers and other artists embrace their next creative work? In this fascinating book, Monique LaRue gives a tantalizing glimpse of the contour of time shaped by inspiration rather than the movement of the clock. Moving from the philosophical to the personal, she provides a view of how each of her novels has come into existence -- the personal context in which each came to be and the social context in which each was received.LaRue uses two important words in her approach to this between-time of creative possibility. The first, meander, from the Greek name for Maiandros, has come to signify wandering at random. Like Northrop Frye, she distinguishes between Kairos, the mysterious, unpredictable moment when the creative impulse is released, and chronos, or passing time. This ephemeral moment, as explained by LaRue, is of time but not in it. Given this paradox, it should come as no surprise that LaRue's between-time of writing creatively has no name. Mortality brings time and its passage unceasingly to mind. Yet, the mental action of moving freely through meandering associations during the time between works becomes the criterion for thinking creatively.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisNo art has been denounced as often as poetry. It''s even bemoaned by poets: I, too, dislike it, wrote Marianne Moore. Many more people agree they hate poetry, Ben Lerner writes, than can agree what poetry is. I, too, dislike it and have largely organized my life around it and do not experience that as a contradiction because poetry and the hatred of poetry are inextricable in ways it is my purpose to explore. In this inventive and lucid essay, Lerner takes the hatred of poetry as the starting point of his defense of the art. He examines poetry''s greatest haters (beginning with Plato''s famous claim that an ideal city had no place for poets, who would only corrupt and mislead the young) and both its greatest and worst practitioners, providing inspired close readings of Keats, Dickinson, McGonagall, Whitman, and others. Throughout, he attempts to explain the noble failure at the heart of every truly great and truly horrible poem: the impulse to launch the experience of an indi

Book SynopsisA pillar of the West African oral tradition for centuries, this epic traces the adventures and achievements of the Mande hero, Sunjata, as he liberates his people from Sumaworo Kanté, the sorcerer king of Soso, and establishes the great medieval empire of Mali.Trade ReviewThanks to his careful editing and translating of Condé's narrative, Conrad offers a highly readable version of the epic that is about a third of its original length. The translation communicates not only the poetic qualities and the essential events of the Sunjata legend but also the master bard's performance values. Thus, this rendering will fascinate those who already know the story and culture and those coming to the epic for the first time. Conrad provides an excellent introduction to Mande oral tradition, the role of the griot, and the Manding belief system. Though he makes no claim for this as the complete scholarly edition, he does provide helpful scholarly notes, a glossary, and a good bibliography. . . . Summing up: Highly recommended. --L. W. Yoder, CHOICEThis is an important resource for college teachers who would like their students to read a text which more fully resembles an oral poem and which communicates a richer, more complex, and more compelling version of the Sunjata story. . . . [This] version . . . is much more worthy to be placed among the great epics of world literature. It is eminently readable for students and instructors who are willing to give it the same kind of attention they give to Homer translations. --Robin Mitchell-Boyask, Temple UniversityConrad offers a great deal for students and instructors, with a solid Introduction which provides the context and history of the epic, a note on Mande nomenclature, maps, an epilogue, and a glossary of important names and terms. This is truly one-stop shopping for the Sunjata epic. I think Conrad's book will be a classic. --Konrad Tuchscherer, St. John's UniversityTable of ContentsPart I: The Late Classics / Post-classic in Oaxaca - An Introduction; Part II: Chronology, Continuity and Disjunction - Etic and Emic Perspectives; Part III: Continuity and Abandonment of Houses in the Valley of Oaxaca - Lambityeco and Macuilxochitl; Part IV: Changing Power Relations and Interaction in the Lower Rio Verde Valley; Part V: Sacred History and Legitimisation in the Mixteca Alta; Part VI: New Research Frontiers in Oaxaca and Eastern Guerreo; Index.

Book SynopsisAlong with a fresh translation of Azuela's classic novel, this volume offers an introduction setting the work in its historical, literary, and political contexts. Related texts include contemporary reviews of Azuela's work, excerpts from John Reed's "Insurgent Mexico", and selections from Azuela's correspondence.Trade ReviewPellon's translation marks a clear improvement over the previous English versions of this seminal novel. Pellon captures the crisp, tense, and terse dialogue of Azuela's original, and I believe that his decision to leave some words in Spanish is a good one, given that most of the words involved are already well known to the non-Spanish speaking public. The retention of these Spanish words adds flavor to the translation without turning it into a 'Taco Bell' version of the novel. I am so enthusiastic about Pellon's translation that I believe it should become the standard edition of Los de Abajo read in America. . . In short, this new translation is worthy of the classic on which it is based. I will certainly use it in my courses, but more to the point, I will recommend it to my colleagues teaching courses on English literature, Comparative literature, and American studies. --Roberto González Echevarria, Sterling Professor of Hispanic and Comparative Literatures, Yale UniversityGustavo Pellon has produced a flowing, readable new translation of Mariano Azuela's Los de Abajo that avoids the sometimes stilted English of the still popular 1929 translation by Enrique Mungia. Not only is Professor Pellon's English more readable but the translation is made smoother by his decision to leave certain difficult-to-translate words in the original Mexican Spanish. For those who cannot grasp the meaning of these words from the context, a glossary is provided at the end of the book. In addition to the new translation Professor Pellon has provided an important service to those who will use this novel in college classes by including an appendix that outlines the most important events of the Mexican revolution, discusses the novel in historical context, and explains Azuela's particular literary contributions. Finally Pellon attempts to come to grips with Azuela's views of the revolution. Also extremely welcome are the selections from John Reed's and Anita Brenner's writings on Mexico from approximately the same period. In short, this volume provides an integrated analysis of a novel that, while always said to be revelatory of the nature of the revolution, is generally not adequately contextualized. . . . To his credit, in his appendix Professor Pellon addresses the question of whether the novel is revolutionary or counter-revolutionary. --Ann Zulawski, MetamorphosesThis edition of Los de Abajo is a most welcome addition to the available literature for undergraduate teaching of the history of Mexico as well as Mexican and Latin American literature. As a teaching tool, it strikes me as clearly superior to the other editions. Pellon's Introduction and appendices are quite accessible and touch on the major historical and literary aspects of the novel. Pellon sincerely wants to help students understand and appreciate the novel. --Timothy J. Henderson, Auburn University Montgomery

Book SynopsisIn 1768, at the age of nineteen, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe began to study hermetic literature. This exploration had a huge impact on the early aesthetic education of Europe’s great man of letters, the last renaissance titan. In the years that followed, Goethe immersed himself in the hermetic tradition, and even set up an alchemic laboratory and attempted to make an elixir of immortality. Although he eventually gave up his alchemical experiments, he was to believe in the validity of the Great Work for the rest of his life.Alchemic symbolism is prominent in many of Goethe’s works, and it is particularly abundant in the tales of self-mastery and transformation presented in this collection. Included here are new translations of “Fairy Tale” (“Märchen”), Goethe’s alchemical allegory; “The Counselor” and “The New Melusina,” stories of temptation and the tests of love; “The Good Woman,” a curious dis
