MP-WIS Uni of Wisconsin Limits to Interpretation The Meanings of Anna
Book SynopsisVladimir E. Alexandrov advocates a broad revision of the academic study of literature, proposing an adaptive, text-specific approach designed to minimize the circularity of interpretation inherent in the act of reading. He illustrates this method with the example of Tolstoy's classic novel, Anna Karenina, via a detailed “map” of the different possible readings that the novel can support.Trade ReviewA major contribution to Tolstoy studies. ... Essential."" - Choice""I find this book particularly attractive because it is rooted in formalist and structuralist theory, skeptical about both the premises and the results of much (especially American) later criticism, and respectful of the text of Anna Karenina."" - Slavic Review""Alexandrov does not insist on the resolution of the novel's basic contradictions but leaves it to his reader what to make of Anna Karenina: a work whose tumult of meanings ultimately undoes it or makes it mysterious and rich, like life."" - Modern Philology

Random House USA Inc The New York Times Footsteps From Ferrantes
Book SynopsisA curated collection of the New York Times' travel column, Footsteps, exploring iconic authors' relationships to landmarks and cities around the world Before Nick Carraway was drawn into Daisy and Gatsby’s sparkling, champagne-fueled world in The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald vacationed in the French Riviera, where a small green lighthouse winked at ships on the horizon. Before the nameless lovers began their illicit affair in The Lover, Marguerite Duras embarked upon her own scandalous relationship amidst the urban streets of Saigon. And before readers were terrified by a tentacled dragon-man called Cthulhu, H.P. Lovecraft was enthralled by the Industrial Trust tower-- the 26-story skyscraper that makes up the skyline of Providence, Rhode Island. Based on the popular New York Times travel column, Footsteps is an anthology of literary pilgrimages, exploring the geographic muses behind some of hist

Vanderbilt University Press Womens Work
Book SynopsisWe are living a moment in which famous chefs, Michelin stars, culinary techniques, and gastronomical accolades attract moneyed tourists to Spain from all over the world. This has prompted the Spanish government to declare its cuisine as part of Spanish patrimony. Yet even with this widespread global attention, we know little about how Spanish cooking became a litmus test for demonstrating Spain's modernity and, in relation, the roles ascribed to the modern Spanish women responsible for daily cooking. Efforts to articulate a new, modern Spain infiltrated writing in multiple genres and media. Women's Work places these efforts in their historical context to yield a better understanding of the roles of food within an inherently uneven modernization process. Further, the book reveals the paradoxical messages women have navigated, even in texts about a daily practice that shaped their domestic and work lives. This argument is significant because of the degree to which domestic activities, Trade ReviewThis book moves existing scholarship to not only value women's and gendered work and the bodies (and subjectivities) that perform this labor, but also calls our attention to how the study and acknowledgment of feminist movements and feminist studies in Spain are not aligned with first-wave feminism."—H. Rosi Song, coauthor of A Taste of Barcelona: The History of Catalan Cooking and Eating"Clean and concise; it's a tight book without any filler that does what it sets out to do. This is great cultural studies work and rich scholarship. Ingram is to be congratulated for expanding our understanding of gendered (food)work in Spain during the early twentieth century."—Robert A. Cambridge University Press The Cambridge Companion to Robinson Crusoe
Book SynopsisAn instant success in its own time, Daniel Defoe''s The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe has for three centuries drawn readers to its archetypal hero, the man surviving alone on an island. This Companion begins by studying the eighteenth-century literary, historical and cultural contexts of Defoe''s novel, exploring the reasons for its immense popularity in Britain and in its colonies in America and in the wider European world. Chapters from leading scholars discuss the social, economic and political dimensions of Crusoe''s island story before examining the ''after life'' of Robinson Crusoe, from the book''s multitudinous translations to its cultural migrations and transformations into other media such as film and television.
