Book SynopsisPopular assumptions about gender and communication - famously summed up in the title of the massively influential 1992 bestseller Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus - can have unforeseen but far-reaching consequences in many spheres of life, from attitudes to the phenomenon of ''date-rape'' to expectations of achievement at school, and potential discrimination in the work-place. In this wide-ranging and thoroughly readable book, Deborah Cameron, Rupert Murdoch Professor of Language and Communication at Oxford University and author of a number of leading texts in the field of language and gender studies, draws on over 30 years of scientific research to explain what we really know and to demonstrate how this is often very different from the accounts we are familiar with from recent popular writing. • Adventures in English Syntax

Cambridge University Press Adventures in English Syntax

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFor anyone who wants to become a more effective writer, a more perceptive reader, and a more precise thinker, an understanding of English sentence structure is indispensable. This book shows you how to begin. Using clear and engaging examples from English, it introduces the basic concepts of syntactic structure to readers with no background in linguistics. Starting with simple, familiar phrases, and progressing to more complex sentences, it builds on what we already intuitively know, to provide a step-by-step account of why we understand these examples as we do. It then shows how that understanding can be applied to writing, helping us to avoid some of the common hallmarks of ''bad writing'', such as ambiguity, redundancy, and vagueness. A unique and valuable resource, this book will enrich your understanding of English in ways that will make you a more effective user of the language. Publisher''s note: The e-book edition of this title, like the print editions, contains color. For thosTrade Review'Deeply informed and engagingly presented, these compelling adventures succeed admirably in achieving the author's intention to reveal 'something of the hidden depth and abstract nature of our knowledge of the language we speak' and to show how 'endlessly fascinating' language is – its structure and how we can use it effectively.' Noam Chomsky, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of Arizona'Professor Freidin's book takes the reader on a delightful journey through the intricacies and idiosyncracies of English syntax, while at the same time providing a lucid, non-technical and painless introduction to current syntactic theory. The book should go a long way towards bridging the gap between linguistic theory and the study of English, greatly enriching both areas of study.' Ian Roberts, University of Cambridge'Overall, the book is inspiring for readers with or without linguistic knowledge. For readers without a linguistic background, the book approaches good/bad writing with concrete and detailed syntactic analysis using tree diagrams and color-coded text, which visually helps the readers realize and comprehend the vertical way of decomposing a sentence. For readers with some linguistic background …' Difei Zhang, Linguist List'A marvelous book that should become a classic of the linguistic literature for beginners, but also for those who enjoy discovering new, original and stimulating perspectives on things they believe they know or think they understand. The adventure starts with considerations about familiar and deceptively simple English phrases, such as coordination structures, and progresses to more complex syntactic areas, like questions and ellipsis. When discussing linguistic phenomena, the author is cautious to start from what we intuitively know, developing an extremely careful analysis that explains why the phrases and sentences analyzed are understood as they are. This book is unique in that it helps the reader to get familiar with the subtleties of English syntax and to acquire a basic knowledge of linguistic theory and, at the same time, is intensely pleasurable. I cannot imagine anyone not thinking after reading it, 'I want to be a syntactician' or 'I should have been a syntactician'.' Alain Rouveret, Emeritus Professor of Linguistics, Paris-Diderot University'This is a great book. Very clear, very well argued. … for writers in training, it would be extremely valuable. I could easily see this becoming required reading in writing classes at the undergraduate level.' Michael D. Cambridge University Press Language Teacher Agency

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis Element aims to elucidate the concept of language teacher agency by exploring the ''what'' question, offering major conceptualisations of agency and explaining how they shape the way we approach teacher agency. The authors then continue with the ''why'' question, and elaborate on the reasons that language teacher agency matters, based on a discussion of the varied purposes of teacher agency at multiple levels. They also acknowledge that teacher agency does not operate alone, and discuss how it intersects with such concepts as teacher identity, emotion, belief and knowledge. Based on this, they identify ways to promote teacher agency through making changes to contexts and/or actors. They then introduce the concept of collective agency and propose a multi-layered model based on an illustrative study. The Element ends with a call for a trans-perspective on understanding language teacher agency so as to facilitate the professional development of language teachers.Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisEvery language in the world shares a few common features: we can ask a question, say something belongs to us, and tell someone what to do. But beyond that, our languages are richly and almost infinitely varied: a French speaker can't conceive of a world that isn't split into un and une, male and female, while Estonians have only one word for both men and women: tema. In Dyirbal, an Australian language, things might be masculine, feminine, neuter - or edible vegetable. Every language tells us something about the people who use it. In I Saw the Dog, linguist Alexandra Aikhenvald takes us from the remote swamplands of Papua New Guinea to the university campuses of North America to illuminate the vital importance of names, the value of being able to say exactly what you mean, what language can tell us about what it means to be human - and what we lose when they disappear forever.

Book Synopsis'As entertaining as it is engrossing' John Banville 'Enlightening, delightful' Arthur der Weduwen, author of The Library Why don’t eleven and twelve end in –teen? The rest of our counting system sits in neatly arithmetical sets of ten, so why do these two rulebreakers seem so at odds with the numbers that follow them? Admittedly, that’s probably a question that might never have occurred to you. But if you’re even remotely interested in the origins and oddities of language, it’s likely also a question you’re now intrigued to know the answer to. Nor is it the only question: take a moment to think about how our language operates and even more spring mind. Why do these letters look the way they do? Why are some uppercase and others lowercase? Why are these words in this order? How are you understanding what these seemingly arbitrary shapes and symbols mean, while doubtless hearing them read to you in a voice inside your head? And what is this question mark really doing at this end of this sentence? Books explaining the origins of our most intriguing words and phrases have long proved popular, but they often overlook the true nuts and bolts of language: the origins of our alphabet and writing system; grammatical rules and conventions; the sound structure of language; and even how our brains and bodies interpret and communicate language itself. Why Is This a Question? is a fascinating and enlightening exploration of linguistic questions you’ve likely never thought to ask. ‘Every page will make you stop, think and wonder.’ James Hawes, author of The Shortest History of England ‘Enthralling, with a riveting “who knew?” moment on nearly every page.’ Caroline Taggart, author of Humble Pie and Cold Turkey Trade Review’As entertaining as it is engrossing’ John Banville ’Enlightening, delightful’ Arthur der Weduwen, author of The Library ‘Every page will make you stop, think and wonder.’ James Hawes, author of The Shortest History of England ‘Enthralling, with a riveting “who knew?” moment on nearly every page.’ Caroline Taggart, author of Humble Pie and Cold Turkey ‘Deft, informative, and packed with fascinating morsels’ Lev Parikian, author of Light Rains Sometimes Fall ‘[Paul Anthony Jones is] a first-rate collector of linguistic curios’ Times Literary Supplement

Simon Garfield'There is a delicious humour implicit in every page . . . [the book] is filled with a sense of wonder, gazing at languages that neither the writer nor reader understands . . . The Babel Message was such fun that I even went out and bought a Kinder Surprise Egg.' - Mark Forsyth, The SpectatorA thrilling journey deep into the heart of language, from a rather unexpected starting point.Keith Kahn-Harris is a man obsessed with something seemingly trivial - the warning message found inside Kinder Surprise eggs:WARNING, read and keep: Toy not suitable for children under 3 years. Small parts might be swallowed or inhaled. On a tiny sheet of paper, this message is translated into dozens of languages - the world boiled down to a multilingual essence. Inspired by this, the author asks: what makes 'a language'? With the help of the international community of language geeks, he shows us what the message looks like in Ancient Sumerian, Zulu, Cornish, Klingon - and many more. Along the way he considers why Hungarian writing looks angry, how to make up your own language, and the meaning of the heavy metal umlaut.Overturning the Babel myth, he argues that the messy diversity of language shouldn't be a source of conflict, but of collective wonder. This is a book about hope, a love letter to language.'This is a wonderful book. A treasure trove of mind-expanding insights into language and humanity encased in a deliciously quirky, quixotic quest. I loved it. This new updated edition confirms its reputation as the ultimate introduction to the greatest puzzle of the human mind: what is language?' Ruggiero Pergola, University of Bari Aldo Moro'I have used The Study of Language for thirteen years as a course book for students new to linguistics. It covers most fields comprehensively, but in an interesting and easily assimilated way. The eighth edition includes new content, but there have been notable improvements in the structure. Yule's book remains my firm favorite as an introductory text.' Stuart Foster, Halmstad University'I first began to utilize Yule's book The Study of Language in 1992, finding the text to be straightforward and comprehensive as an exploration of general linguistics for pre-service bilingual and ESL teacher education candidates. With each subsequent edition, Yule has maintained his direct and scholarly, yet uncomplicated, manner of writing, consistently instructing students in developing insights about language and languages. His use of multiple languages to illustrate significant concepts about linguistics for students validates languages in a global sense, providing each language with requisite status. Yule's text is thorough but concise, thereby enabling students to steadily build knowledge that is essential for the effective and equitable teaching of students whose first language is not English.' Melinda Cowart, Texas Woman's University'I was first introduced to 'Yule's The Study of Language' as a graduate student shifting disciplines from literature to linguistics and, since then, like a Traveler's Guide, Yule's has become my best guide to linguistics. As a transnational scholar, teacher and, more recently, a mother raising a heritage speaker, the eighth edition with its new addition of heritage languages offers an excellent and all-inclusive guide to diverse and extremely pressing language matters.' Equinox Publishing Ltd What to Remember, What to Teach: Human Rights

Book SynopsisWhat to Remember, What to Teach is intended for researchers, graduate students and teachers that are interested in the fields of discourse and memory studies and, particularly, in the linguistics and multimodal recontextualization of history into pedagogical discourses and their relationship with the transmission and co-construction of memories of a recent national past. This book aims to provide a better understanding of the processes of memory practices and their construction in the pedagogical discourse of history in Chile regarding a recent painful national past of human rights violations and dictatorship, which is part of a history shared by Latin American countries. With this purpose in mind, this book offers a detailed discourse analysis of how this recent traumatic national history is recontextualized and negotiated into secondary level Chilean history education. The analysis proposed is a social discourse analysis of key written and oral corpora of pedagogical practices from a multimodal perspective, paying particular attention to the construction of evaluative prosodies in the discourses analyzed. The corpora contemplated for the analysis comprise official History textbooks, History classroom interactions, teachers and students interviews, Chilean history written by specialists and official documents produced by the state during post-dictatorial years. This book not only offers a detailed linguistics and multimodal analysis of key discourses that construct pedagogical practices of recent traumatic past of dictatorship and human rights violations in Chile; it also presents a theoretical development of the interpersonal and experiential regions of meaning from a Systemic Functional Linguistics approach and from Spanish language resources. In sum, this book is intended as a contribution to our understanding of how a recent sensitive past of a nation is historized, transmitted and co-constructed by new generations of youth and their history teachers through a discursive exploration of the processes of remembering and forgetting in the micro space of memory practice of the classroom and through teachers and students personal and social memories.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Discursive Construction of Memories: Pedagogical Practices as Spaces for Intergenerational Transmission of Recent Past Chapter 2: Remembering Recent Past of Human Rights Violations from the Official Documents Promoted by the State Chapter 3: Official History Textbooks, Social Memory and Historicizing the Memory of Recent Chilean Past Chapter 4: History Classroom Interactions as Micro Spaces of ‘Doing’ Memory Chapter 5: Multimodality and Historical Evidentiality: The Space of Symbolic Images in the Transmission of Memory in Textbooks Chapter 6: Transmission of Memory and Co-construction of the Past by New Generations of Youths and History Teachers Chapter 7: Recontextualization of Historical Memories into History Secondary Education in Chilean Schools

This applies to all aspects of life, but most of all that most sought-after of feelings, happiness, where our ability to both experience and understand it is limited by the words at our disposal. However, all is not lost. Even if English has not created a word for a specific feeling, another language probably has. Book SynopsisDespite a history of hundreds of years of research analysing aspects of English grammar, there are still open problems which continue to baffle language researchers today. Such grammar mysteries' arise for a number of reasons: because the language is changing; because different speakers of the language adhere to distinct norms and thus introduce and maintain variation in the system; because there are differences between the grammar of spoken and written English. This book illuminates some of the complexities of the subject, the areas where new discoveries await and why it matters.Through a series of accessible and engaging case studies on various aspects of grammar, from multiple negation to possession, the authors present grammar as an intellectual challenge. This book brings out into the open questions about language usage to which we still do not have good answers in a bid to make variation overt and to revel in the mystery of the English language. Both aimed at the Trade Review'In this exciting and innovative book Calude and Bauer demystify English grammar by cracking some of its hard nuts. Book SynopsisThis book presents original letters exchanged between Rabindranath Tagore and James Henry Cousins, and explores their shared ideas of culture, art, aesthetics, literature, education; aspects of nationalism and orientalism; theosophy, knowledge and spiritualism; cross-cultural dialogue; and anti-imperialism and internationalism. Trade Review‘Dr Majumdar’s edition of the letters between Rabindranath Tagore and James Cousins illuminates a little-known friendship of the great Bengali writer and thinker with the Irish writer, teacher and Theosophist who made India his second home. Majumdar’s meticulous annotation of the correspondence and his wide-reaching introduction to the book make this an important contribution to the study of Tagore and the connections between Indian and Irish culture.’ Nicholas Grene, Emeritus Professor of English Literature, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland ‘Sirshendu Majumdar has brought to light a correspondence by two minds who fostered art, literature, and education in a time of upheaval and transnational change. Dr. Majumdar’s insights and impeccable scholarship reveals a friendship that was both more intimate and earnest than many literary friendships, including that of W.B. Yeats and Tagore. These letters are remarkable for their honesty, humor, and professional hopes—they veer in tone from reverential to professional to jocular. Majumdar’s expert overview helpfully puts their words in their cultural and historical contexts. By editing the letters of these two remarkable friends, educators, and cultural leaders, Majumdar has done a great service to students and scholars of Indian and Irish revivalism, as well as postcolonial studies. In reading these exchanges, we witness a rare exception to colonialist dynamics: Tagore’s and Cousins’s shared, and enviable, vision for a universal humanism.’Joseph Lennon, Associate Dean, International and Interdisciplinary Initiatives; Emily C. Riley Director of Irish Studies; Professor, Department of English, Villanova University, USA, and author of Irish Orientalism: A Literary and Intellectual History ‘As James Cousins wrote to Rabindranath Tagore, ‘Poets get put to queer jobs’. A quarter century of correspondence between these poets, carefully edited and contextualised by Sirshendu Majumdar, demonstrates a close ideological affinity between Irish cultural nationalism and Indian cultural self-assertion. Both poets proposed an alternative modernity, challenging the modes of metropolitan modernity in Britain and Europe, because each worked in the context of decolonisation. Practical educators and organisers of education, their shared pedagogical ideals and project — a humanist and counter-imperialist universalism — integrated arts and crafts, music and dance, poetry and philosophy into a holistic approach to the revival of the nation and world reform.’ Seán Golden, Former Professor, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, SpainTable of ContentsChronology.
