  • Nova Science Publishers Inc The Language of Pedagogy Today: What are the New

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn the field of pedagogy, there are different publications about the processes of didactic interaction in the classroom. However, there are no scientific works that reflect an analysis showing the terms and expressions this language of specialty has in the conformation of its lexicon. This linguistic aspect in the discipline of pedagogy (language discourse in pedagogy) is extremely necessary and is constantly experiencing changes. When teachers interact in and out of the classroom, they make use of a language, terms and expressions that contain specific semantic meanings that strictly belong to this epistemological community and, in fact, those terms and expressions offer a certain scientific status to the pedagogical speech. If we consider that the pedagogical speech is constantly altered by the implementation of educative acts, teachers, researches and other educative agents need to know the new terms. These reasons have promoted the creation of this book, necessary for the professionals that work in the field of education: To analyze what kind of language teaching professionals use, how they communicate with students, what are the terms used to explain to parents the academic development of their child, etc. The reader will find in this book a characterization of the language of pedagogy through the analysis of its neologisms, anglicisms and technicisms. This book, then, is aimed at teachers, parents, researchers, stakeholders, counsellors, psychologists, pedagogists, teaching professionals, and to any interested in the field of education. They will find interesting insights into the scientific field of Pedagogy, knowing how a discipline builds its language. It is one step further to learn more about the epistemology of this discipline. The reader will find in this book an analysis of the terms that have acquired a specific meaning in the language of pedagogy and allow communication in this epistemological community. The book is divided into two major parts. The first one provides an extensive and current theoretical framework on neologisms of a loan in the language of pedagogy: interlingual loans, voices of classical languages and inter-linguistic loans, with examples to facilitate their understanding. The second part of this book shows a terminological analysis of technicisms, secondary terminologizations, acronyms and syntactic expressions. Therefore, the reader will have a holistic and specific overview of the language of pedagogy to properly understand its terms. Secondary terminologizations constitute a procedure to use the terms of a discipline in a different discipline with a new specialized meaning. Acronyms are also very frequent in the language of pedagogy and they supplement the lack of technicisms. The syntactic expressions contribute to allow communication between professional and non-professional speakers, and are characteristic of the language of pedagogy. Evidently, the epistemological community of pedagogy has a special language, which is used in specific communicative contexts and with different forms of content. This does not mean it is necessary to develop a semantic analysis, but rather to be aware of how words are created and what meanings are legitimized. For all these reasons, the authors considered the book necessary to contribute to a better knowledge and understanding of the discipline of pedagogy.

  • The Linguistics of Vocabulary

Nova Science Publishers Inc The Linguistics of Vocabulary

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this compilation, the authors open with an analysis of the formation of philosophical terminology in the history of Early-Modern Ukrainian culture; specifically, two philosophical conceptsdobro and blaho (добро and благо) -- are the focus here. Both are related to notions of good and wellbeing, but contextual nuances may affect their discrete meanings rather significantly. The authors consider the manner in which these two words functioned in the works by the prominent 18th century Ukrainian philosopher Hryhorii Skovoroda by way of a study based on a close reading of thirteen of his colloquies. Following this, the authors aim to investigate the relationship between morphological awareness and reading in a language environment which is phonologically transparent and morphologically challenging (ie: the Czech language environment). The study showed that morphological awareness affected reading speed and accuracy more than phonological awareness. Paradoxically, morphological awareness affected reading comprehension less than phonological awareness authors interpreted this to be due to superficial reading style which manifested itself regardless of student age, gender or IQ. Continuing, research has indicated that vocabulary depth and breadth are strongly correlated with reading comprehension and, consequently, with academic achievement. Recent research has demonstrated that vocabulary can even predict achievement up to 10 years later. Some theoretical models, such as the simple view of reading (Hoover & Gough, 1990) or the multicomponent view of reading (Cain, 2009) have received extensive empirical support and provided a clear insight into the relationship between reading comprehension and other linguistic variables, including vocabulary. Thus, the implications of findings for the design of interventions and for the planning of reading instruction are discussed. The concluding chapter aims to discuss relevant underlying theories and review previous empirical studies on language learning in both F2F and synchronous computer-mediated communication, as the nature of technology- or computer-mediated communication makes enhanced incidental learning feasible.

Book SynopsisForeign Language Teaching and Learning: New Research begins by examining whether, and to what extent, the three types of linguistico-cultural expressions (proverbs, idioms and sayings) of Nepali translated into English would be intelligible to native English speakers and non-native English speakers outside of Nepal. The second chapter reveals the challenges in successful foreign language acquisition for primary school age learners. Particular attention is paid to the investigation of cognitive styles such as impulsivity, reflexivity, rigidity, and flexibility in the learning process. The third chapter focuses on the theoretical substantiation and experimental verification of student-centered learning technology in the educational process. Additionally, the authors investigate data collected in Portuguese L2 classrooms in a multicultural university in Macau, China. The combination of the students'' first language (Cantonese or Mandarin), the target language (Portuguese) and the official language of the university (English) was found to provide different spaces for participants to formulate contexts and define rules regarding the exclusive use of the target language in class. The impact of an integrated cooperative learning approach on soft skills related to English as a foreign language learning is assessed, in addition to existing research on the characteristics of written texts of level two test-takers by adopting a linguistic and discourse analytic approach. The authors go on to present data gathered through a questionnaire adapted from McMillan (2001) and follow-up interviews conducted to gain a deeper insight into the instructors'' classroom practices. The findings of the study revealed important implications related to the congruence and incongruence between the requirements of Turkish as second language curriculum in Turkey. The closing chapter focuses on teaching methodologies and classroom practices that could provide learning opportunities to develop and maintain academic skills and self-regulated language learning strategies, specifically, through implementing a project-based learning approach.

  • Studies and Exercises in Formal Logic

Nova Science Publishers Inc Studies and Exercises in Formal Logic

Book SynopsisIn addition to a somewhat detailed exposition of certain portions of what may be called the book-work of formal logic, the following pages contain a number of problems worked out in detail and unsolved problems, by means of which the student may test his command over logical processes. In the expository portions of Parts I, II, and III, dealing respectively with terms, propositions, and syllogisms, the traditional lines are in the main followed, though with certain modifications; e.g., in the systematisation of immediate inferences, and in several points of detail in connexion with the syllogism. For purposes of illustration Euler''s diagrams are employed to a greater extent than is usual in English manuals. In Part IV, which contains a generalisation of logical processes in their application to complex inferences, a somewhat new departure is taken. So far as I am aware this part constitutes the first systematic attempt that has been made to deal with formal reasonings of the most complicated character without the aid of mathematical or other symbols of operation, and without abandoning the ordinary non-equational or predicative form of proposition. This attempt has on the whole met with greater success than I had anticipated; and I believe that the methods formulated will be found to be both as easy and as effective as the symbolical methods of Boole and his followers. The book concludes with a general and sure method of solution of what Professor Jevons called the inverse problem, and which he himself seemed to regard as soluble only by a series of guesses.

Book SynopsisThis book began as one of the publication outlets for two flagship conferences in 2019: 12th Conaplin (Conference on Applied Linguistics) and 3rd Icollite (International Conference on Language, Literature, Culture, and Education) which bring forth broad topics in the fields of education, applied linguistics, and literature organized by the Indonesia University of Education (UPI â Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia). Conaplin is one of the first annual conferences held by UPI, organized by the Language Centre in collaboration with the English Language Department. Icollite, on the other hand, emerged from the local scientific forum into an international conference to showcase the latest insights offered by new doctoral graduates in the Faculty of Language and Literature Education. For the themes of 2019 put forth by the two conferences, 12th Conaplin's "Applied Linguistics and Industrial Revolution 4.0: Reviewing Policy, Expanding Research, Enriching Practices" and 3rd Icollite's "Bridging Literacies, Culture, and Society towards Education 4.0", we highlight the importance of current buzz words in the language and education fields. We have observed that the proliferation of the use of these terms signals how communities in general, especially those in higher education, are grappling with responding to rapid changes in the IR 4.0. In the era we live in, humanity is being reshaped at an unprecedented speed and scale, mainly due to the advancement of technology. In order to maintain balance in our educational system so that social and cultural aspects can work harmoniously with the advancement of technology that can sometimes be isolating and impersonal, we collectively need to identify new and innovative ways in which we support the full potentials of our students, colleagues, and communities in interconnected global interactions. To this end, we need to review our existing policies in education, expanding our research to foster more collaboration and interdisciplinary connection to provide solutions and alternatives to problems that might arise as the consequence of the changing times.Table of ContentsPreface; Literacy, Culture, and Society in the Context of 4.0 Industrial Revolution: An Introduction; Towards Education 4.0: An Agenda for Multiliteracies in the English Language Classroom; The Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Language Education Policy: Indonesia Readiness to Use and Democratize English; Multilingual Societies and Language Policy in Indonesia; When Localization Travels to Southeast Asia: Elt Curriculum Development in the Age of Market-Driven Needs; Agency in Research on Education: How is Agency Researched?; Fostering Language Learner Autonomy for Lifelong Learning; Becoming a Professional Teacher: Exploring Early-Career Indonesian EFL Teachers Identity Formation; Emerging Teacher Professional Identity: The Experience of Pre-service Teacher in an International Teaching Practicum Program; Attitudes towards English as an International Language (EIL) during Overseas Study: A Study of Indonesian Postgraduate Students; Contextual Influences on Learner Engagement in University EFL Courses in Japan; The Effect of Mobile-Assisted Language Learning Quizizz on High School Students Reading Comprehension in the English Learning Context; Does Cognition Reflect Performance? • A New Form-Function Grammar of English

Broadview Press Ltd A New Form-Function Grammar of English

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book approaches the structure of English from a form-function perspective that is both theoretical and practical. It asks learners to consider meaning, structure and use, in contrast to many grammars that focus on structure, sometimes to the exclusion of use and even meaning. The book presents an extended introduction to areas of grammar that many would see as indispensable, such as participial and infinitive phrases. The analysis is largely achieved through form-function tree diagramming and extends the structure to include finite and nonfinite predicates.Trade Review“Written in exceptionally clear prose and elucidated with modern-day examples based on the author’s expertise in the history of the English language and grammaticalization studies, A New Form-Function Grammar of English teaches students how form and function are inextricably linked in the analysis of language structure. This approach is a welcome one for educators who recognize the need for teaching both facets of grammar, and the design makes the textbook an ideal adoption for English, rhetoric, linguistics, language arts, and education programs that focus on the stylistic choices expected in the college classroom and beyond, as well as on the underpinnings of language structure more broadly. End-of-chapter exercises provide excellent opportunities for students to apply the content and build on the subject matter presented within and across chapters.” — Dawn Nordquist, University of New Mexico“Students will find K. Aaron Smith’s A New Form-Function Grammar of English very comprehensive and comprehensible. The book progresses logically through the major aspects of English, and the form-function diagrams used throughout illustrate the topics clearly by providing a visual for how the parts of speech combine into the different constituents of a sentence. While presenting this highly technical material, Smith also discusses informal and spoken English usage and how it differs from prescriptive rules. I particularly appreciate his attention to traditional prescriptivism’s gatekeeping function and his discussion of how to rethink cultural norms to make language more inclusive and socially responsive. Students who read this book will become more informed and thoughtful scholars of English.” — Megan Hartman, University of Nebraska at KearneyTable of Contents Introduction Chapter One: Doing Grammar in Modern Times Chapter Two: Parts of Speech: An Introduction to Word Classes Chapter Three: Units of Grammatical Analysis Chapter Four: The Basic Sentence Chapter Five: Nouns and Pronouns Chapter Six: Functions of the Noun Phrase Chapter Seven: Functions of Prepositional Phrases Chapter Eight: The Inflection Phrase Chapter Nine: The Subjunctive Mood and Modal Verbs Chapter Ten: Negation Chapter Eleven: Active and Passive Voice Chapter Twelve: Question Formation Chapter Thirteen: Coordination and Compound Sentences Chapter Fourteen: Adverb Clauses Chapter Fifteen: Relative Clauses Chapter Sixteen: Noun Clauses Chapter Seventeen: Infinitive and Participle Phrases Chapter Eighteen: Grammar Myths

Open-ended, creative, and critically self-possessed thinking is its constant theme—what field doesn’t need more of that?Trade Review"This small book holds big value for teachers of philosophy and teachers of critical thinking in any discipline. If you want your students to be more ‘curious, critical, exploratory, and creative,’ this book will serve well as a supplementary or core text. It offers appreciation for the power of questioning, opportunities to identify types of questions, and practice in questioning skills. The authors, both recognized as master teachers, bring their own considerable pedagogical experience and engaging style to encouraging better questioning in all of us." —Donna Engelmann, Alverno College"Highly accessible, Thinking Through Questions guides students to greater freedom regarding how, why, when, and when not to ask or answer critical, expansive, and philosophical questions. It is an especially good choice for courses where critical thinking figures prominently, both because of its content and because of the practice exercises it contains. But more fundamentally, this book leaves readers more able to resist coercive questions, reconfigure false dilemmas, question more creatively, and diagnose embedded philosophical and other assumptions. It teaches how to profitably answer questions, do valuable things with questions other than answer them, ask better questions, and liberate oneself from cognitive traps many questions set." —David Concepción, professor of philosophy, Ball State University

Book SynopsisAre words really so determined by rules that, as Leonard Bloomfield once argued in defence of the "morpheme-based" morphology, "word forms are analysed as arrangements of morphemes", such that there are "rules to combine morphemes into word forms, or to generate word forms from stems "? (WK 2012) But there is an opposing approach to morphology known as the "word-based" morphology, which "takes paradigms as a central notion", in that it "states generalisations" which categorise "words based on the pattern they fit into. This applies both to existing words and to new ones. Application of a pattern different from the one that has been used historically can give rise to a new word", (WK 2012) Contrary to these opposing approaches (and other ones as will be discussed in the book), morphology (in relation to both typologies and rules) are neither possible (or impossible) nor desirable (or undesirable) to the extent that the respective ideologues (on different sides) would like us to believe. Of course, this questioning of the opposing approaches to morphology does not mean that morphology is worthless, or that those fields (related to morphology) like morphophonology, semantics, syntax, pragmatics, anthropological linguistics, etymology, sociolinguistics, computational linguistics, evolutionary linguistics, philosophy of language, neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and so on are unimportant. Needless to say, neither of these extreme views is reasonable. Instead, this book offers an alternative (better) way to understand the future of morphology, especially in the dialectic context of typologies and rules -- while learning from different approaches in the literature but without favouring any one of them (nor integrating them, since they are not necessarily compatible with each other). More specifically, this book offers a new theory (that is, the fusional theory of morphology) to go beyond the existing approaches in a novel way. If successful, this seminal project is to fundamentally change the way that we think about morphology in relation to typologies and rules from the combined perspectives of the mind, nature, society, and culture, with enormous implications for the human future and what I originally called its "post-human" fate.

Book SynopsisDiscourse can be understood as the sum of linguistic usages and metalinguistic manners about a social practice. It examines language-in-use with the help of the tools that would enable us to get a deeper understanding of what is said or unsaid. Analysis of discourse would help us understand social, cultural, psychological and academic dynamics that are interwoven in the utterances of interlocutors as they use language. This book covers a range of theoretical and applied studies on the examination of discourse in various second and foreign languages learning and teaching contexts. Basically, it includes studies that specifically focus on different aspects of discourse in the teaching of all four skills; reading, writing, listening and speaking. Three theoretical chapters on conducting discourse analysis research, the use of corpus linguistics and historical review of discourse analysis perspectives enrich the scope and content of the book. Researchers from different teaching and learning settings, including Turkey, China, and the USA, contributed to this volume. The target audience of the book are undergraduate and graduate students in different foreign and second language departments, and teachers, researchers and academicians of foreign and second languages. "Discourse Perspectives on Second and/or Foreign Language Teaching and Learning" will facilitate the understanding of discourse by portraying empirical and theoretical studies on discourse. It covers quite different perspectives (eg: sociocultural theory of mind perspective, critical discourse analysis and psychological and/or mainstream perspectives) of various topics in discourse (eg: classroom interaction, written discourse, corpus linguistics, oral interviews, discourse of blogs, technology and discourse, etc). The first three chapters provide a review of discourse and how it is conceptualised to various target groups of people (e.g., graduate students, teachers, researchers and academicians) assuming no prior knowledge. The other chapters focus on different aspects of discourse both in and outside the classroom. This book provides teachers, learners and researchers of second and/or foreign languages with the tools to analyse and/or examine language inside and outside their classrooms.

Book SynopsisAre the rules and principles in phonology so general that, as Jacques Derrida once said, "as soon as there is language, generality has entered the scene"? (REL 2013) This general view on language (or phonology in the current context) can be contrasted with an opposing view by Alfred North Whitehead that "we think in generalities, but we live in detail." (BRAIN 2013) Contrary to these opposing views (and other ones as will be discussed in the book), phonology (in relation to generality and specificity) are neither possible (nor impossible) nor desirable (or undesirable) to the extent that the respective ideologues (on different sides) would like us to believe. Surely, this re-examination of different opposing views on phonology does not mean that the study of generality and specificity is futile, or that those fields (related to phonology) -- like descriptive linguistics, theoretical linguistics, psycholinguistics, phonetics, speech synthesis, speech perception, morphophonology, articulatory phonology, laboratory phonology, phonotactics, and so on -- are unimportant. (WK 2013) In fact, neither of these extreme views is reasonable. Rather, this book offers an alternative (better) way to understand the future of phonology in regard to the dialectic relationship between generality and specificity -- while learning from different approaches in the literature but without favouring any one of them (nor integrating them, since they are not necessarily compatible with each other). More specifically, this book offers a new theory (that is, the inclusionist theory of phonology) to go beyond the existing approaches in a novel way and is organised in four chapters.

  • Number Conception & Application

Nova Science Publishers Inc Number Conception & Application

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisHow number words came about? This book offers a trenchant answer to the question, explaining number conception and application slot by slot through a host of Eurasian languages. The cross-linguistic lack of width and depth in numeracy studies, which has existed for a long time, seemed impossible to overcome. This discouraging situation has now changed dramatically with Dr Penglin Wang''s entering the field. This book is designed to investigate the linguistic and semiotic sources of number words, especially the cardinal numbers, in Altaic, Indo-European, and Sino-Tibetan languages and will provide students of numeracy a more cognitive perspective on the problems they may face. The focus is on patterned explanations of each numerical formation as reflected in different languages. This book contains intellectual merits in four respects. First, it addresses the etymological origins of the numerals, many of which have not received ultimate etymological explanations and even have not yet been discussed. Second, it enriches the existing methodology by launching a strategic shift from the heavy focus on hypothetical reconstructions to the search for cognitive patterns for number conception. Third, the analyses are interdisciplinary involving linguistics, anthropology, epistemology, semiotics, and history. Fourth, numerical reinterpretation and application is taken fully into consideration in the linguistic formation of numerals across the major language families in Eurasia. In addition, a distinction is made between grammaticality and variability in counting. The author delves into the theories correlating variability in counting with primitiveness, which was developed during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and argues that variability in counting is not necessarily a primitive phenomenon. Instead, it could be triggered by the then increasing social complexity and progress.

Book SynopsisAmong the cognitive processes involved in the construction of any kind of meaning, attention is fundamental in determining why, how and what we mean. Attention plays a primary role in the process of learning the meanings of words and more generally of acquiring knowledge; signification, discourse and persuasion; perceiving, representing and (re)framing reality; shaping the attitudes of the audience; conveying values and ideologies. Conversely, the meanings of words and more generally, of signs, convey the condensed instructions for the attentional operations one has to perform in order to consciously experience what is expressed through and by them. Language, by addressing and guiding attention in specific ways, helps to select, amplify and support certain semantic components and concepts, and construct and communicate knowledge and values. This book is the first to present a comprehensive overview of the extant research on the relationships between attention and meaning. The contributions collected here offer an overview of the most prominent theories and models developed so far that aim to explain how attention determines meaning construction. This book will be of interest to students, researchers and teachers in the realm of linguistics, semantics, discourse studies, semiotics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, linguistic development, cognitive architectures of language, neuropsychology of linguistic function and social psychology.

Book SynopsisLanguage ability is not only universal, but of vast potential, and related to numerous other cognitive and social functions. This book explores individual language process development and how it proceeds in a very predictable manner, parallel to specific areas of brain development. The authors'' acquaint the reader with the current debate on the prevalence of oral and written linguistic difficulties as a precursor of Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD). The difficulties in verb/action processing found in patients with Parkinson''s disease are discussed as well. The inferential abilities of children with Specific Language Impairments (SLI) are also reviewed. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and its effects on communication are explored in Chapter 6. The authors'' findings suggest that communication difficulty persist for years after injury, independent from other cognitive abilities. In later chapters, the authors examine atypical language development and psychopathological risk. The remaining chapters review nonverbal behavior and its importance in objectifying and verifying the diagnosis of mental disorders, if any; the communication challenges for the deaf (and applications that can help impaired people in some aspects of their life); and finally, the importance of segmental duration -- a very important component of a text-to-speech (TTS) system in order to produce high quality synthetic speech which sounds natural.

Book SynopsisWith English becoming the world''s foremost lingua franca, the pressure to improve English language education (ELE) has been steadily increasing. Consequently, the nature of ELE has changed drastically in the last decade. This has not only brought about a number of changes in the way English is taught and learnt, but it has also led to various innovative practices around the world. As a result, this edited book aims to shed light on the new theoretical and methodological developments in the field of ELE as well as the major issues and difficulties faced by practitioners in different parts of the globe. One very important variable that the book takes into account is the role that English already plays in a particular society since this may affect the views that teachers and students hold of the language. This in turn can significantly influence the way English is taught and learnt in given political, economic and socio-cultural settings. The purpose of this book is therefore to provide a comprehensive overview of the pedagogical methods, policies and problems that underlie English language education in ten different regions across the world, including: the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, Japan, China and Hong Kong. In doing so, the different chapters in the book emphasise the importance of responding to linguistic and other forms of diversity in order to develop English language education in a globalised world. This book will be useful for teachers and students of English language, for English language curriculum and materials developers, and for those involved in educational policy-making and language acquisition research. Written by experts in the field, the range of content covered in the book''s chapters will also help policy-makers, researchers and practitioners develop effective English language education practices and policies, and propose solutions to emerging issues in English language teaching and learning in different environments around the world. The newly-developed arguments and concerns pertaining to English language education will serve as future reference for professionals interested in this area of expertise.
