Book SynopsisThe "Synagoge" (Gk: collection of useful word explanations) is one of the most important lexicographical sources from early Byzantine times. The anonymous author quotes extracts from the works of ancient authors which have not been preserved elsewhere and gives details of customs and myths from the epoch. At the same time, he presents his own age and provides a rich source of information on education and scholarship. The present edition combines all the available manuscripts of the oldest version of the "Synagoge", and thus provides the first complete and critical survey of the context of the genesis and developmental stages of this work. In addition, the second part presents a new edition of the letter alpha from manuscript B, which contains particul-arly valuable data and thus required a new edition, the only previous version dating back to 1828. Comprehensive indexes provide access to the edition.

  • Pragmatics and Corpus Linguistics: A Mutualistic Entente

De Gruyter Pragmatics and Corpus Linguistics: A Mutualistic Entente

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe recent history of linguistics has witnessed the development of some disciplines that were conceived apart but benefited from common intuitions. One example of this phenomenon is the relationship established throughout time between pragmatics and corpus linguistics. Although their arrival heralded the application of two paradigms based on distant theoretical principles, they always showed an interest in their mutual advances and their practical reconciliation gave birth to an intellectual synergy that proved very fruitful. The present volume is an homage to the symbiosis of pragmatics and corpus linguistics and gathers the works of some of the scholars that have striven to create the liaison between them for a better understanding of language.

  • Signifying and Understanding: Reading the Works of Victoria Welby and the Signific Movement

De Gruyter Signifying and Understanding: Reading the Works of Victoria Welby and the Signific Movement

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe theory of signifying (significs), formulated and introduced by Victoria Welby for the first time in 1890s, is at the basis of much of twentieth-century linguistics, as well as in other language and communication sciences such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, translation theory and semiotics. Indirectly, the origins of approaches, methods and categories elaborated by analytical philosophy, Wittgenstein himself, Anglo-American speech act theory, and pragmatics are largely found with Victoria Lady Welby. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to say, in addition, that Welby is the "founding mother" of semiotics. Some of Peirce's most innovative writings - for example, those on existential graphs - are effectively letters to Lady Welby. She was an esteemed correspondent of scholars such as Bertrand Russell, Charles K. Ogden, Herbert G. Wells, Ferdinand S. C. Schiller, Michel Bréal, André Lalande, the brothers Henry and William James, and Peirce, as well as Frederik van Eeden, Mary Everst Boole, Ferdinand Tönnies, and Giovanni Vailati. Her writings directly inspired the Signific Movement in the Netherlands, important for psycholinguistics, linguistics and semantics and inaugurated by van Eeden and developed by such authors as Gerrit Mannoury. This volume, containing introductions and commentaries, presents a selection from Welby's published and unpublished writings delineating the whole course of her research through to developments with the Significs Movement in the Netherlands and still other ramifications, contemporary and subsequent to her. A selection of essays by first-generation significians contributing to the Signific Movement in the Netherlands completes the collection, testifying to the progress of significs after Welby and even independently from her. This volume contributes to the reconstruction on both the historical and theoretical levels of an important period in the history of ideas. The aim of the volume is to convey a sense of the theoretical topicality of significs and its developments, especially in semiotics, and in particular its thematization of the question of values and the connection with signs, meaning, and understanding, therefore with human verbal and nonverbal behavior, language and communication.

De Gruyter A Dictionary of Atong: A Tibeto-Burman Language of Northeast India and Bangladesh

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisAtong is a Tibeto-Burman language spoken in Northeast India and Bangladesh. In this dictionary, Seino van Breugel provides a rigorous, well-illustrated and well-referenced lexical description of the language, making this book of great interest and value to general linguists, typologists, as well as area specialists and cultural anthropologists. Comprising not only of an Atong-English, but also an English-Atong dictionary, as well as semantic lexica, this volume is one of the most thorough lexical descriptions of a Bodo-Garo language to date. The grammatical lexica allow the reader quick access to lists of members of the various Atong word classes, collocations and idiomatic expressions. The grammatical compendium makes this book self-contained, while its many references link it to the rest of the author’s corpus on the Atong language. The appendix of photos not only provides visual illustrations to many of the Atong dictionary entries, but also offers the reader a glance at the physical environment in which the language is spoken.

  • Brill Dictionary of Arabic and allied loanwords: Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, Galician and kindred dialects

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOne of the main cultural consequences of the contacts between Islam and the West has been the borrowing of hundreds of words, mostly of Arabic but also of other important languages of the Islamic world, such as Persian, Turkish, Berber, etc. by Western languages. Such loanwords are particularly abundant and relevant in the case of the Iberian Peninsula because of the presence of Islamic states in it for many centuries; their study is very revealing when it comes to assess the impact of those states in the emergence and shaping of Western civilization. Some famous Arabic scholars, above all R. Dozy, have tackled this task in the past, followed by other attempts at increasing and improving his pioneering work; however, the progresses achieved during the last quarter of the 20th c., in such fields as Andalusi and Andalusi Romance dialectology and lexicology made it necessary to update all the available information on this topic and to offer it in English.

  • Brill Majd al-Dīn al-Fīrūzābādī (1329-1415): A Polymath on the Eve of the Early Modern Period

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn Majd al-Dīn al-Fīrūzābādī (1329-1415): A Polymath on the Eve of the Early Modern Period, Vivian Strotmann provides a detailed reconstruction of the famous lexicographer’s and travelling scholar’s life and works. The ‘author of the Qāmūs al-muḥīṭ’ is widely known for his Arabic lexicon, which overshadows the astounding breadth of his writing. This polymathic aspect is elucidated through detailed reconstruction of al-Fīrūzābādī’s corpus, including examination of works that were considered lost and misapprehensions concerning ascriptions of authorship. Through minute analysis of biographical sources, the book shows al-Fīrūzābādī’s development as a scholar, his central role in the defence of Ibn al-ʿArabī’s teachings and thereby his importance as a powerful intellectual in Timurid times and for developments during the Early Modern Period.Trade Review"Strotmann provides a detailed exposition and discussion of al-Firuzabadi, evaluates the biographical information concerning his life, critically examines and highlights his work – unquestionably illuminating and helpful not only for Arabists, but generally for linguists and researchers in the area of biography. Strotmann’s is a work that attempts to reach beyond al-Firuzabadi as the author of the Qamus; she actually promises that this is a book leaving the reader with more questions than answers." - Stavros Nikolaidis, in: Journal of Oriental and African Studies 28 (2019) "... Strotmann's work represents the first monographic study on al-Fīrūzābādī and the most successful and comprehensive effort ever undertaken to create the complete portrait of this great Islamic scholar, encompassing his biography and oeuvre, his intellectual network of masters and students, his relationship with political power, and his religious thought, thus establishing itself as the essential reference for any future investigation on the man, his ideas, and his written work." - Giovanni Maria Martini, University of Bonn, in: Al-Abhath 62-63 (2014-2015)Table of ContentsPreliminaries Acknowledgements Table of Transliteration Abbreviations List of Tables, Graphs, Photos, Maps and Texts 1. • Brill Lateinische Musterprosa und Sprachpflege der Neuzeit (17. – Anfang des 19. Jhs.): Ein Wörterbuch

    Out of stock

Jh. n. Chr. nicht bezeugt sind. While Renaissance Latin prose has been opened up by René Hoven in his ‘Lexique de la prose latine de la Renaissance’, there has been no dictionary for the later authors. Especially a stylistic documentation was missing. An exact documentation is of epoch-historical interest and not only fills a gap in existing Latin lexicography, but also offers new material for comparison with how vernacular languages were used. In this dictionary, new words are registered, but the focus is on the new meanings of Classic Latin words. As a starting point, culturally and philologically significant texts of Latin prose , were selected, i.e. texts by authors who were regarded as exemplary. Since these authors tried to use as many as possible ancient (and then mostly classical) words, this dictionary contains only those words and word meanings, which are not attested until the 7th century AD.Table of ContentsAbbildungsverzeichnis Sonderzeichenverzeichnis Anmerkung des Verlags De Helgi Nikitinski laudibus Vorwort Wörterbuch Deutsch-lateinischer Index

  • Brill A Comparative Lexical Study of Qur'ānic Arabic

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis work does not aim to be an etymological dictionary of Qur'ānic Arabic, nor does it attempt to suggest some new genetic classification of the Semitic languages. Rather, it offers insights into the internal lexical relationships attested in a number of Semitic varieties. The work is based on a quantitative analysis of a substantial corpus of the Arabic lexicon with a view to investigating lexical relationships within a number of Semitic languages. Qur'ānic Arabic is the source of a lexical mass comparison exercise involving Akkadian, Ugaritic, Aramaic, Syriac, Hebrew, Phoenician, Epigraphic South Arabian and Ge‘ez. Moreover, the lexical links identified in this study are in themselves linguistic indicators of the various degrees of cultural proximity characterising the various Semitic languages.

  • Brill The Dynamic Lexicon of English: A Socio-Cognitive Approach towards Loan Processes and Their Linguistic Effects

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe open access publication of this book has been published with the support of the Swiss National Science Foundation. This study investigates the interrelation between use, meaning and the mind as a central issue of contact-induced linguistic variation and change, using the influence of French, Spanish, German and Yiddish on English as case studies. It relies on innovative methodological approaches, including the use of an integrative, socio-cognitive model of the dynamic lexicon, to describe borrowing processes and their linguistic outcomes. The multitude of socio-cultural contexts relevant to the introduction of the various borrowings since the nineteenth century has been reconstructed. This implies the identification of borrowings reflecting connections of linguistic features and culturally embedded attitudes. Taking the effects of cognitive and social factors on conventionalization and entrenchment processes into account, this study makes an original contribution to existing research.Table of ContentsList of Figures Symbols and Abbreviations Introduction 1 State Of The Art: The Influence of French, German, Spanish and Yiddish on the English Lexicon Since 1801  1 Lexical Borrowing from French Since 1801  2 Lexical Borrowing from German Since 1801  3 Lexical Borrowing from Spanish Since 1801  4 Lexical Borrowing from Yiddish Since 1801 2 Methodology, Data and Terminology  1 Methodology  2 Data  3 Terminology 3 Semantic Fields of French, German, Spanish and Yiddish Borrowings: Their Distribution, Development and Rich Cultural Context  1 Semantic Fields Influenced by French Since 1801  2 Semantic Fields Influenced by German Since 1801  3 Semantic Fields Influenced by Spanish Since 1801  4 Semantic Fields Influenced by Yiddish Since 1801 4 The Morphological Development of Fairly Common Borrowings  1 Compounding  2 Affixation  3 Conversion  4 Back-Formation  5 Clipping  6 Blending  7 Summary 5 The Semantic Development of Fairly Common Borrowings  1 New Concepts (the Need for a New Designation)  2 Abstract Concepts, Distant and Usually Invisible Referents  3 Sociocultural Change  4 Close Conceptual or Factual Relation  5 Complexity and Irregularity in the Lexicon  6 Emotionally Marked Concepts  7 Summary 6 The Contextual Use of Borrowings with a Specific Focus on Informal Language Including Social Media  1 Pursuit of Prestige and Social Estimation  2 ‘Messages’ Conveyed by Foreign-Derived Brand Names  3 Socio-cultural Attitudes and Values  4 Socio-cultural Reservations, Prejudice and Stereotypes  5 Sensationalism  6 Indication of Ethnic Identity and Group Affiliation  7 Vividness and Variation of Expression in Informal Usage or Slang  8 Crudity of Expression in Informal Usage or Slang  9 Summary 7 Summary and Conclusion  1 The Chronological Distribution of Fairly Common French, German, Spanish and Yiddish Borrowings Since 1801  2 Schmid’s Entrenchment- and Conventionalization Model in the Light of Loan Processes Appendix A Appendix B Bibliography Index

  • Brill The Power of Words: Essays in Lexicography, Lexicology and Semantics. In Honour of Christian J. Kay

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis volume comprises essays in lexicography, lexicology and semantics by leading international experts in these fields. The contributions cover Old, Middle and Present-Day English and Scots, and specific subjects include medical vocabulary, colour lexemes, and semantic and pragmatic meaning in terms for politeness, money and humour. In the area of Old English studies there are articles on kinship terminology and colour lexemes, and in Middle English a semantic and syntactic study of the overlapping of the verbs dreden and douten. Many of the essays make use of the Historical Thesaurus of English project at the University of Glasgow, and pay tribute to its Director, Professor Christian Kay; e.g., one article demonstrates how the HTE, a project which is at the interface between historical semantics and lexicography, may present a rich resource for information about the lexicalization of concepts within our culture, such as changing social attitudes in the area of will, consent and coercion. Other resources, such as The Linguistic Atlas of Early Middle English, and the Oxford English Dictionary provide a rich source for information on historical lexicography, semantics and editing. A number of essays concern the Scots language, such as an analysis of evaluative terms in modern Scots speech and writing, the rich potential of rhyme in Scots, and the role of lexicon in th- fronting in Glaswegian.Table of ContentsIntroduction C. Book SynopsisThe study of anglicisms and of the complex network of related categories has deeply evolved in the first two decades of the twenty-first century and it is quite likely that it will keep evolving in decades to come. Much more attention is being paid to the way in which the large collection of English morphological and lexical items is modified and reinvented within the receptor languages. Throughout the nine chapters of this book, the latest developments in anglicisms in languages like French, Danish, German, Czech, Italian, Finnish and Spanish are explored. To do so, a corpus methodology has been used in each chapter, which will contribute to a better understanding of this challenging phenomenon on European languages from an innovative perspective. • Statistical Methods in Language and Linguistic Research

Equinox Publishing Ltd Statistical Methods in Language and Linguistic Research

Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is try to illustrate with numerous examples how quantitative methods can most fruitfully contribute to linguistic analysis and research. In addition, it does not intend to offer an exhaustive presentation of all statistical techniques available to linguistics, but to demonstrate the contribution that statistics can and should make to linguistic studies. This book shows how quantitative methods and statistical techniques can supplement qualitative analyses of language.
