    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe objective of this study is to provide an account of the terminology the European Union has created and used with regard to its development cooperation policy since the Treaty of Rome was signed in 1957. For this purpose, a terminological analysis has been conducted, based on a corpus of texts produced by the EU in this domain. A corpus-based approach to terminology has been chosen as it opens up the possibility to gather both conceptual and linguistic as well as usage information about the terminological units. Moreover, it allows the study of terms in the context of communicative situations and enables the analysis of concordances that can be used to reveal possible ideological aspects of the terminology involved. The book not only provides a detailed and comprehensive report on the status quo of the EU’s terminology in this field. It also reflects the evolution of its terminology since the establishment of a common European development cooperation policy and thus against the background of an ever-changing socio-economic and political situation. The findings are meant to contribute to a better knowledge and understanding of European development cooperation policy as well as to help improve communication between professionals in European and national bodies.Table of ContentsContents: Terminology – Corpus-based terminography – Using electronic text corpora in terminology work – Advantages of corpus-based terminography – Building terminological corpora – The European Union’s development cooperation policy – The Treaty of Rome – The Yaoundé Conventions – The Lomé Conventions – The Cotonou Agreement.

It demonstrates the energy and intellectual commitment that these two researchers have devoted to Translation Studies in the last twenty years. Their book series ‘Translation and Meaning’ from which this anthology was mainly composed and the 5-yearly Maastricht-Łodź Duo Colloquia of the same name that they have been organising since 1990 have become internationally well-known for their breath of topics and up-to-date themes. Articles spanning two decades give a unique historical perspective to the volume, highlighting seminal moments of the development of what is now established as an interdisciplinary and international field. Renowned scholars such as Eugene Nida, Peter Newmark, Albrecht Neubert, Christiane Nord, Gideon Toury, Mona Baker, Anthony Pym, Mary Snell-Hornby and Ernst-August Gutt are writing alongside new scholarly voices in diverse investigations of meaning in translation-related areas. Peter Lang AG Translating Anthroponyms: Exemplified by Selected

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe subject of the present book are literary anthroponyms and their translation. The examples, taken from English children’s literature of the Victorian and Edwardian period, show that literary names are usually motivated and linked to their bearers, therefore it is necessary to investigate them in terms of their meaning, functions and role as narrative elements. The study focuses on how anthroponyms function in the context of the narrative, situation and culture, and shows similarities and differences between the name systems of the original and the translation. Also, it gives an overview of a larger number of anthroponyms, focusing on translation techniques used for various name categories. The author also discusses time-related tendencies in the translation of anthroponyms.Table of ContentsContents: Onomastics – Children’s literature – Translation.

Book SynopsisWhile there are plenty of studies on the impact English has exerted on the German language, the reverse contact situation has been relatively neglected. This monograph sets out to shed light on the German influence on the English lexicon in the twentieth century. It provides the first systematic appraisal of the semantic integration and contextual usage of the words adopted from German in the past few decades. The results presented in this study are based on the evaluation of a comprehensive lexicographical corpus of 1958 twentieth century German borrowings retrieved from the Oxford English Dictionary Online. The present-day usage of the borrowings is illustrated with linguistic documentary evidence collected from a wide range of English language corpora.Trade Review«This book of Julia Schultz fills a gap in English lexicology. This work provides the first comprehensive research on the semantic integration of German borrowings into English and demonstrates that the former had a huge impact on the lexicon of the latter especially in the first forty years of the 20th century, although today it is common to emphasize only the influx of Anglicisms into German.» (Caterina Saracco, Linguist List 2017) Vollständige Rezension hier lesenTable of ContentsContents: Subject fields influenced by German in the twentieth century – The chronological distribution of twentieth-century German borrowings – The semantic analysis, contextual usage and stylistic functions of German borrowings – The present status of German vis-à-vis English – Twentieth-century German borrowings in the OED and in EFL dictionaries.

Book SynopsisThis book describes law from the perspective of its language. It expands, reformulates and reshapes the author’s previous book «Legal Linguistics». The recomposed text corresponds to lectures held for students of legal linguistics and scholars interested in the fundamental legal-linguistic research. The author focuses on legal-linguistic operations such as legal argumentation and legal interpretation that steer the legal discourse. He also explains the processes in which the meaning of law emerges in discursive practices. Furthermore, he scrutinizes problems of textuality of law. This book is also an introduction into the law of linguistic communication and into legal futurology that comprises linguistic aspects of legal globalization.Trade Review«Despite being highly technical and, as the title itself suggests, taking the form of lecturing, this work is accessible and, due to its interdisciplinary nature, should be of benefit to people of various disciplines for diverse purposes, which may be demonstrated by considering its key findings and contributions. [...] On the whole, Lectures on Legal Linguistics has successfully demonstrated that the legal-linguistic approach to explaining how law operates could have significant consequences not only for teaching and researching law as an academic discipline but also and especially for understanding and bettering law as a practice of adjudication.» (Hanna H. Book SynopsisThe author critically discusses the concept of ‹general nouns›, which Halliday/Hasan introduced in their approach to lexical cohesion (1976), and she provides a comprehensive overview of these nouns from a micro- and a macro-linguistic perspective. For the empirical analysis, the author compiled a corpus, which allows statements about a medium- and genre-specific use of ‹general nouns›. For this purpose, she developed an analytical tool, which takes into account formal and semantic features. The major outcome of the corpus analysis is that ‹general nouns› are much more flexible in form and function than Halliday/Hasan assumed and, most importantly, that they fulfil genre-specific functions some of which have not systematically been associated with lexical cohesion.Table of ContentsCritical evaluation of Halliday/Hasan’s concept of ‹general nouns› – Holistic description of these items from a micro- and a macro-linguistic perspective – Development of analytical tool based on the parameters modification and linkage – Corpus of over 300,000 words – Written and spoken genres – Quantitative and qualitative corpus analysis

Peter Lang AG Echoes of English: Anglicisms in Minor Speech

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn today’s world, the English language exerts an unprecedented influence internationally, and its echoes are present in almost all languages. These echoes, also known as Anglicisms, are no longer limited to English-sounding loanwords. The English impact includes a wide range of linguistic phenomena, all of which are discussed in this book, presenting a taxonomy accommodating all types of linguistic outcome of contact with English. While the outlook remains international, the focus is on Danish and Afrikaans, two Germanic languages spoken in societies with very different histories involving English. A number of chapters present diachronic corpus studies showing that the English influence on Danish in the 21st century resembles the impact felt by Afrikaans speakers already in the 20th century. "The book is highly original and differs markedly from other works on Anglicisms. For instance, the author takes advantage of his knowledge of the field of translation studies to write a thought-provoking chapter on translation (including subtitling and dubbing) as a vector for English influence. The initial chapters give the state of the art in studies on Anglicisms on the world stage (not just for Danish), drawing on the work of many scholars, expressed in a multitude of languages. The argumentation of the book is based on hands-on research, much of which was carried out by the author himself. The style is an excellent compromise: a measured, authoritative language with a bright conversational lift. It will appeal to both students and a broader readership." Throughout the nine chapters of this book, the latest developments in anglicisms in languages like French, Danish, German, Czech, Italian, Finnish and Spanish are explored.

Book SynopsisThe fact that English has always borrowed heavily from other languages is well known. However, the systemic long-term effects of the processes involved in such contacts are under-researched. This collection of articles takes a more wide-spanning approach, looking at various periods and phenomena across the centuries. The volume focusses on language contact seen as cultural contact, especially with Scandinavia and France, as well as on specific text types from times ranging from Old English to the twentieth century. The volume aims at advancing insight on the ways in which contacts with other languages and cultures influenced the English language as a whole. The book provides new reflections on borrowing and lexical innovation as cultural choices bound to different textual traditions.Table of ContentsGabriella Mazzon -Introduction - Herbert Schendl , Philip Durkin & Gisle Anderson-Systemic effects of lexical contact- Valeria di Clemente , Letizia Vezzosi & Julia Landmann - Borrowing and ideology - Louise Sylvester, Megan Tiddeman , Richard Ingham , Stefan Dollinger , Alexandra Doherty , Giovanni Iamartino , Lucia Berti & Gabriella Mazzon - Language contact and cultural contact

Book Synopsis This book explores the construct of language in use, specifically as operationalised through different item types in the Austrian Matura (school-leaving exam). Empirical research on some of these item types is scarce. The author reports on a mixed-methods study. The theoretical frameworks employed are Purpura’s (2004) model of language ability and Weir’s (2005) socio-cognitive framework. The findings suggest that the tasks under investigation assess grammatical form and meaning at the sub-sentential and sentential level. Different item types were also found to target different elements of lexicogrammatical competence. The study contributes to understanding the nature of language in use and sheds light on the application of the socio-cognitive framework to the validation of language in use tasks. Book SynopsisThis monograph presents a contrastive-corpus analysis of the semantic category of gratification. It takes as a case study the verb reward and its various forms in Polish and in English, as prototypical of the semantics of gratification. The study, set predominantly in the framework of semantic syntax, and drawing from the theory of valence and frame semantics, adopts a corpus-driven and usage-based approach to language analysis. By exploring the syntactic realization and distribution of arguments opened by the predicates of gratification in the two languages, the book offers new insights into language representation in English and Polish, and addresses the combinatoricity of human thought and cognitive mechanisms reflected in the lexicalization patterns of the situation of rewarding.Table of Contents a contrastive-corpus analysis of the semantic category of gratification a case study the predicate5 reward and its various forms in Polish and in English set in the framework of semantic syntax, the theory of valence and frame semantics based on data derived from a wide variety of sources from modern corpora addresses the phenomenon of the combinatoricity of human thought

Book SynopsisThis monograph presents Old English renderings of Christian words found in interlinear glosses, especially the Gospels and the Psalter glosses. Nouns, adjectives, adverbs and verbs in biblical contexts are included through dialectal (Northumbrian, Mercian, and West Saxon) diachronic (early and late West Saxon) and idiolectal (i.e. scribal) comparison. By using interlinear glosses, the correspondence between the original Latin word and the Old English rendering can be recognised more clearly than in ordinary prose, and at the same time, a flexible choice of renderings can be seen in some contexts. The author tries to show which Old English words were chosen as renderings, while some Latin words were accepted without translation.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction, 1.

The focus of the 50th volume is diverse, covering a spectrum from the analysis of a number of literary texts from a variety of theoretical perspectives, to the evaluation of language use in different socio-political contexts and examinations of DaF-teaching and theory both in South Africa and elsewhere. Literary works by Uwe Timm, Joseph Roth, Dirk Fleck, Daniel Kehlmann, Sharon Dodua Otoo, Grete von Urbanitzky, Natascha Wodin and Mithu Sanyal are examined from different perspectives. The respective contributions consider, among other things, how cultural and autobiographical memory is expressed. Postcolonial perspectives and ecocriticism represent further approaches, as does the work of Bruno Latour. Finally, genre typologies and the challenges of translation are analysed. Language use in media reporting and politics, as well as a comparative study of linguistic worldviews represent the contributions to language studies.Table of ContentsZwischen Enge und Weite.

Book SynopsisIn 2012, The Library of Congress (Washington, D.C., U.S.A.) had the initiative of organizing an annual meeting which would disseminate the vision of library leaders on the importance of the book. The meeting would gather all the categories involved in the book industry: writers, publishers, editors, professors, librarians. The goal was to create a platform for discussions on how to promote the book as a crucial element for culture and education enhancement. The power of information and its dissemination was discussed within the first edition, while keeping the book as a central element in all debates. After this first edition, the Summit of the book was organized yearly in different locations throughout the world: Singapore (2013), France (2014), Egypt (2015) and Ireland (2016). The event had a powerful international impact and in 2017 the 6th summit was hosted in Brasov (Romania) at the "Transilvania" University. This volume is the collection of the most valuable contributions to the 6th Summit of the Book where experts presented their best practices and expertise in the history and technology of the book, knowledge support, and book dissemination.Table of Contents Introduction, by Angela Repanovici, Manolis Koukourakis, Tereza Khechoyan PART I.
