Nova Science Publishers Inc Intellectual Property: Trade Considerations &
Book SynopsisThis book provides background on intellectual property rights (IPR) and discusses the role of U.S. international trade policy in enhancing IPR protection and enforcement abroad. IPR are legal rights granted by governments to encourage innovation and creative output by ensuring that creators reap the benefits of their inventions or works, and they may take the form of patents, trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks or geographical indications. U.S. industries that rely on IPR contribute significantly to U.S. economic growth, employment, and trade with other countries. Counterfeiting and piracy in other countries may result in the loss of billions of dollars of revenue for U.S. firms as well as the loss of U.S. jobs.

Nova Science Publishers Inc U.S. Patent System Reform, Abuse & Disputes
Book SynopsisCongressional interest in patent reform has increased as the patent system becomes more significant to U.S. industry. Patent ownership is perceived as an incentive to the technological advancement that leads to economic growth. Yet, this augmented attention to patents has been accompanied by persistent concerns about the fairness and effectiveness of the current system. Several studies, including those by the National Academy of Sciences and the Federal Trade Commission, recommended reform of the patent system to address perceived deficiencies in the operation of the patent regime. This book provides an overview of current patent reform issues including a summary of the structure of the current patent system and the role of patents in innovation policy. Also discussed are patent quality, the high costs of patent litigation, international harmonisation, and speculation in patents, which have motivated the reform proposals.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Fourth Amendment: Select Issues & Cases
Book SynopsisThe Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution requires government-conducted searches and seizures to be supported by probable cause and a warrant. Federal courts have long recognised that there are many exceptions to these requirements, one of which is the border search exception. The border search exception permits government officials to conduct "routine" searches based on no suspicion of wrongdoing whatsoever. On the other hand, when warrantless border searches are particularly invasive, and thus "non-routine", they are permissible only when customs officials have, at a minimum, a "reasonable suspicion" of wrongdoing. This book examines the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution as it relates today to border security, government access to phone calling activity and related records, student strip searches, and governmental drug testing and compulsory DNA collection from people who have been convicted on criminal charges.

Nova Science Publishers Inc No One Home: Challenges & Costs of Vacant
Book SynopsisDuring the continuing foreclosure crisis and economic downturn, increased numbers of vacant residential properties are becoming vandalised or dilapidated, attracting crime, and contributing to neighbourhood decline in many communities across the country. Even though homeowners whose properties are being foreclosed upon may continue to occupy their properties until after a foreclosure sale occurs, many leave their homes during the foreclosure process. In addition, properties for which a new entity has assumed ownership through foreclosure may be vacant until the property is resold. This book explores the concern over the costs that foreclosed and unattended vacant homes are creating for local communities and the strategies state and local governments are using to address unattended vacant property problems and the challenges those governments face.
