Book SynopsisTechnological developments related to the Internet benefit consumers who want convenient ways to view and hear information and entertainment content on a variety of electronic devices. The global nature of the Internet offers expanded commercial opportunities for intellectual property (IP) rights holders but also increases the potential for copyright and trademark infringement. Piracy of the content created by movie, music, and software companies and sales of counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs and consumer products negatively impact the American economy and can pose risks to the health and safety of U.S. citizens. This book discusses legislative approaches to online piracy and copyright infringement.

  • Federal Control of Guns & Firearms: Developments

Nova Science Publishers Inc Federal Control of Guns & Firearms: Developments

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisCongress has debated the efficacy and constitutionality of federal regulation of firearms and ammunition, with strong advocates arguing for and against greater gun control. Since March 2011, much of the gun control debate in the 112th Congress has swirled around allegations that the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) mishandled a Phoenix, AZ-based gun trafficking investigation known as "Operation Fast and Furious." The tragic shootings in Tucson, AZ, on 8 January 2011, in which six people were killed and 13 wounded, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, have also generated attention. This book examines the developments and considerations in the federal control of guns and firearms, with a focus on gun control legislation; an overview of District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. City of Chicago; DC gun laws and proposed amendments; and firearms commerce in the US.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Charitable Giving & Taxes: Benefits, Changes &

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPrior to the financial crisis and subsequent recession, the value of tax benefits for charitable contributions and organizations was estimated to be around $100 billion per year. About half of this cost arose from the deductions for charitable contributions with the other half from exemptions of earnings of non-profits. In 2010, the deduction for charitable contributions results in an estimated $40 billion in federal revenue losses. On average, endowment investments in 2009 experienced losses, meaning that the federal government did not lose revenues from exempting asset returns from taxation. This book provides an overview of recent changes affecting tax-exempt and charitable organizations, while also discussing issues that may be of legislative interest in the future.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines a survey of federal laws containing preferences based on race, gender, or ethnicity. In recent years, federal courts have reviewed minority admissions programs to state universities; scrutinized the constitutional status of racial diversity policies in public elementary and secondary schools; ruled on minority preferences in public and private employment as a remedy for violation of civil and constitutional rights; and considered federal, state, and local efforts to increase minority participation as contractors and subcontractors on publicly financed construction projects. Also discussed is affirmative action in the workplace; diversity in public education; race discrimination and the Supreme Court; and pay discrimination claims of the Civil Rights Act.

  • Constitution, Arbitration & Courts

Nova Science Publishers Inc Constitution, Arbitration & Courts

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn "Constitution, Arbitration and Courts", arbitration is examined as it began, as an extra-judicial mechanism for resolving disputes. Private arbitration predates the public court system. The ancient Sumerians, Persians, Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans all had a tradition of arbitration. Communities introduced arbitration systems intended to resolve their communal conflicts in accordance with custom, equity and internal law. Arbitration threatened a momentous basis of judicial business, as well as judicial jobs linked to the courts'' caseloads. Courts perceived the growing status of arbitration as a favoured means for resolving business disputes and as a threat to their power. Courts have managed to get in the way of the arbitration process and to gain a role in arbitration. Thus, courts have taken the role of the guardian of public policy in a state, and so arbitration is considered not to be a safe, independent and fully alternative dispute mechanism.
