  • Classical Latin

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc Classical Latin

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOffers a grounding in Latin that combines the traditional grammatical method with the reading approach. This title contains chapters which include various exercises that reinforce the grammar and morphology.Trade ReviewTo all my Latin colleagues: switch to this book! I have taught from half a dozen different Latin texts over the years, and have always wished there was something else I could be using. Finally that something else has arrived! I was pleasantly surprised at its accessibility, liveliness, and clarity. I have used it for two years now at the University of Delaware with great results. It fits extremely well into a two-semester elementary program. Each chapter features clear explanations of a manageable amount of material, with a variety of exercises ranging from simple to difficult, so the instructor can select what to give the students. The most capable students can do more difficult exercises, the average student is challenged but not overwhelmed, and the students with weaker language abilities are able to make it through the language requirement successfully. I have told all my friends in the field to try this book! --Lynn Sawlivich, University of DelawareThese days there are two types of Latin course. One of them is the traditional course and it is into this category that McKeown's book falls. The other is the inductive course, best known from the Cambridge and (less uncompromisingly) the Oxford Latin courses. McKeown's book is an admirable embodiment of the traditional methodology. . . . As could be anticipated from the author of the lively Cabinet of Roman Curiosities (2010), he eases the diet of rote learning and sentences with strong and varied injections of information about the Latin language and Roman life that entertain as much as they stimulate. I cannot think of any other course that comes close to McKeown's in this respect: we have a wonderful melange of poetry, etymology, maxims, facts bizarre and sober, in addition to much else. The book is splendidly produced. Grammar is helpfully laid out; constructions are explained with notable clarity: it is obvious that the material has been constantly redrafted in the course of repeated testing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where McKeown teaches, and it is no doubt a college market for which it will prove best adapted. It could be completed in a (pretty intensive) year. You will not do better than McKeown's book if you want the traditional approach. --James Morwood, [Wadham College], Oxford University, in The Classical ReviewThe publication of McKeown's Classical Latin is very exciting. It is going to be fun to teach from! It is thorough yet not pedantic; it covers all the important material in a logical fashion, and it does not have the silliness that is found in some elementary Latin texts. I am planning to adopt it for Elementary Latin (a year course, in which I think McKeown will fit very nicely) the next time I teach the class. It will be a great improvement over the text I have used for years and years. --Jane Crawford, Professor of Classics, University of Virginia

Book SynopsisPrepares students to read Greek by presenting basic traditional grammar and by introducing Greek written by ancient Greeks, from the first day of study.Trade ReviewLuschnig's excellent An Introduction to Ancient Greek offers a thorough and clear account of grammar and syntax, copious exercises for practice, and a wonderful array of brief passages from ancient authors for translation and discussion. My students and I have used the text happily for years, and this new edition is even better than its predecessor. --Deborah H. Roberts, William R. Kennan, Jr. Professor of Comparative Literature and Classics, Haverford CollegeI have used C.A.E. Luschnig's text for my beginning Greek sequence for over twenty years. I find that her approach brings students to competency quickly and efficiently. The new version improves what was already a good text, keeping the many exercise sentences, providing a realistic selection of 'real Greek' readings with translation aids conveniently below. The proof is in the pudding: after doing beginning Greek with Luschnig's text, my Greek students have been able to move easily to the second year reading classes in either Euripides or Plato. --Karelisa Hartigan, Professor of Classics, University of Florida. . . Book SynopsisAl-Kitaab: Part One develops skills in standard Arabic while providing additional material in both colloquial and classical Arabic. With new video material and revised and updated text and exercises, the bound-in and revised DVD supersedes both the former CD audio set and video DVD previously available only as separate items-making this singular volume a comprehensive whole for those immersed in the early and intermediate stages of learning Arabic. Providing approximately 150 contact hours of college-level instruction, parts of this revised edition are updated with contemporary selections for reading comprehension. The organization of the chapters has been adapted to reflect the most current pedagogical developments. Audio tracks for vocabulary sections now allow students to hear a new word followed by a sentence using it in context with previously acquired vocabulary and grammatical structures, enabling students to build new vocabulary skills while reviewing old material. The basic texts have been refilmed with a new cast of actors. The DVD also contains substantially more material that exposes the learner to Egyptian Arabic: students have the options of seeing and hearing the video of each lesson in both Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian colloquial Arabic. In addition, a short dialogue in Egyptian colloquial Arabic appears at the end of each lesson. New video materials also feature interviews with Egyptians (subtitled in English) about various aspects of Arab culture, such as gender issues, fasting in the Muslim and Christian traditions, social clubs and their significance, and more. FEATURES OF PART ONE, Second Edition: develops all language-related skills including reading, listening, speaking, writing, and cultural knowledge; immediately incorporates extensive use of authentic materials for reading, listening, and grammatical practice, thus relating abstract grammatical concepts to practical skills; presents narrative-based content through audio and video media rather than written text to develop meaning-focused language processing skills, utilizing two main characters and their extended families; develops reading skills through the use of composed texts derived from the main narrative and authentic texts from newspapers and journals; and, introduces grammar using spiraling and inference, challenging students to discover the grammar of the language by means of analogy, problem solving, and educated guessing. It also reinforces grammar and vocabulary through extensive classroom and homework exercises that provide constant review and expand to challenge students as their skills develop; introduces students to Egyptian colloquial through scenes based on the main narrative to promote the use of shared vocabulary and structure of the two registers to increase listening comprehension skills; and, contains Arabic-English and English-Arabic glossaries and reference charts as well as a new grammar index.Trade ReviewThe student hears, sees and reads Arabic, and learning is kept close to an authentic linguistic and cultural experience. ADFL Bulletin This is an extremely impressive volume, clearly demonstrating the practical and academic value of an outstanding textbook and the enormous amount of effort required in creating such a tool. Forum for Modern Language Studies More drills and activities have been worked into the text, giving students more practice in the skills being presented. Georgetown University Press Formal Spoken Arabic FAST Course with MP3 Files

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis Arabic language-learning classic is now enhanced with a bound-in CD of MP3 files. Designed to provide beginners in Arabic with maximum linguistic and cultural exposure in a short period (about 100 hours of contact time), this book consists of sixteen lessons with dialogs and exercises dealing with day-to-day scenarios: greeting people, getting a taxi, making phone calls, asking directions, discussing the weather, and effectively communicating with police and duty officers. The lessons help the reader to navigate situations at gas stations, marketplaces, restaurants, and in their own households. Formal Spoken Arabic (FSA) is a kind of lingua franca that is more natural than speaking Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), the literary form of the language. FSA uses the shared features of the various urban colloquial dialects, defaulting to Levantive (terms common to Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan) where the spoken dialects diverge. Each lesson includes cultural notes on American-Arab interactions, notes on learner strategies for managing Arabic conversations with a limited amount of language, and grammar explanations in clear, non-technical language. Although the main dialogue for each lesson is presented in Arabic script, transcriptions are used to accelerate spoken performance. "The FAST Course" includes grammatical explanations, English-Arabic and Arabic-English glossaries, appendices listing common idioms, courtesy expressions and other useful terms, instructor's notes, and drills aided and accompanied by the CD. Originally created for diplomats, this is an expanded and enhanced edition of a work originally developed by the U.S. State Department as a six-week intensive, or "FAST" (Familiarization and Short-Term) course, and is easily adaptable for students in Middle East area studies. Travelers heading for posts in the Arab world who quickly need to gain a basic ability to converse in day-to-day situations will find Formal Spoken Arabic FAST Course an invaluable companion.Table of ContentsPreface Notes for the Instructor Notes & Introduction for Students The Arabic Alphabet Lesson One: Who are You?
