Springer Verlag, Singapore Conferencing and Presentation English for Young
Book SynopsisThis book discusses and demonstrates the types of English discourse used at academic conferences and offers guidance to prospective conference participants from multiple perspectives. It is a combination of research taken from numerous academic conferences attended and observations made by the author, based on well-established research methods in applied linguistics, as well as a guidebook aimed at students, ESP teachers, and young academics and professionals wishing to upgrade their skills to participate fruitfully in, and contribute to, academic conferences. It offers academic novices and non-native speakers of English in particular much that is new and practical, far beyond the realm of simple ‘presentation tips’. It addresses various topics, such as chairing discussions, poster management, discussion sessions, the TED phenomenon, workshops, and the emerging field of English as a lingua franca. The style alternates between the accessible and practical, and the analysis of the linguistic categories underpinning the discourse: genre analysis, the nature of the specialist discourse community, features of academic spoken discourse, and the presentation as multimodal narrative are all explored. The book includes authentic samples of model speech discourse throughout, along with questions and exercises for deliberation or practice in each chapter.Table of Contents1 Introduction.- Part 1 The external framework of academic conferences.- 2 An 'Age of conferencing'.- 3 The TED factor.- 4 Affective factors influencing conference presentation performance.- 5 'Native' vs non-native English speakers (NES/NNES) and English as a lingua franca (ELF) at Academic Conferences.- 6 Implications of ELF for ESP/EAP teachers, learners, and international academic conference discourse.- Part 2 The conference and the structure of its core speech events.- 7 The academic functions of conference discourse.- 8 Genre and mode in the discourse community.- 9 Engagement and narrative.- Part 3 Academic conference discourse: The research background.- 10 Investigation process and research focus.- 11 Social and environmental factors.- Part 4 Practical ideas and suggestions for effective conference performance.- 12 Academic tenor and formulaic academic phrases.- 13 Conference presentation introductions and openings.- 14 The management of conference presentation outline slides.- 15 Effective conference presentation summaries, conclusions, and closings.- 16 Transition phrases in the conference presentation.- 17 Managing discussion sessions (Q&A).- 18 Intonation, visuals, text, and narrative.- 19 Managing conference presentation and discussion session breakdown (Repair).- Part 5 Academic conference agnates and extra-textual considerations.- 20 Poster sessions.- 21 Symposia, colloquia, and workshops.- 22 The attendee as a conference participant.- 23 Chairing discourse.- 24 The academic conference social dimension.- Part 6 Practical preparations for the conference presentation.- 25 Final-stage tips.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Arts: A Science Matter
Book SynopsisThis book treats arts as part of science, from the unified perspective of Science Matters. It contains 17 chapters, with 18 contributors who are prominent humanists, professional artists, or scientists. It consists of three parts: Part I: Philosophy and History of Arts; Part II: Arts in Action; Part III: Understanding Arts. The book is aimed at both research scholars and laypeople, and is unique in two important aspects. It is probably the first and only book that academic professionals and practicing artists contribute to the same book, as equals, on the common theme of creating and understanding arts. (Artists here include Cristina Leiria whose huge Kun Iam (Goddess of Mercy) sculpture is an important landmark in Macau, and the famous movie director, Hark Tsui, who is publishing his first ever article on movie-making). Perhaps more importantly, a new understanding of the origin and nature of arts is offered for the first time, which is more convincing than all the other hypotheses put forth in the last two thousand years.Table of ContentsArts: A Science Matter (L Lam); Philosophy and History of Arts: The Latin ArtesA" and the Origin of Modern ArtsA" (B Hoppe); Science and Art: A Philosophical Perspective (G-S Wu); Neuroarthistory: Reuniting Ancient Traditions in a New Scientific Approach to the Understanding of Art (J Onians); Science and Art in China (B Liu); The Development of Science Theater (I Schneider); Arts in Action: The Silence of Art (C Leiria); Linsen's Art (L Ngai); From Curiosity to Creation: The Art Work of Holly Lane (H Lane); ChemArt and BioArt (M Burguete); Making Movies and Making Physics (H Tsui & L Lam); A Journey along the Borderland: A Critical Approach to Artificial Intelligence-Based Literary Practice (J-C Zhu & D F Harrell); Understanding Arts: On the Origin of Literary Narrative and Its Relation to Adaptation (P Hogan); Emotion, Cognition and Aesthetic Form in Vishal Bhardwaj's Omkara and Shakespeare's Othello (L Hogan); Danmei Novels and Rotten Women (T-T Wang); Objects in Art and Science (N Sanitt); Su Dong-Po's Bamboo and Paul Cezanne's Apple (L Lam & L-M Qiu).

NUS Press Sundanese Print Culture and Modernity in 19th
Book SynopsisSundanese Print Culture and Modernity in 19th Century West Java traces the development of modern printed books written in Sundanese, the dominant language in West Java, Indonesia, and the mother tongue of about 30 million people. Starting with the 'discovery' of Sundanese by Europeans in the early 19th century, Mikihiro Moriyama follows the developments in the ensuing century when a small group of Dutch scholars and colonial officials reshaped the language and its literature over the next one hundred years. Schools taught Sundanese, and printed materials based on western concepts began to influence indigenous writing and oral tradition. The imposition of European standards of literary aesthetics shaped a modernity that rejected traditional knowledge in favour of rational and empirical paradigms. Interest in traditional poetry and its mythologies declined, and new forms of prose, including novels, captured the attention of the reading public. These materials promoted useful knowledge and morality, and encouraged deference and loyalty towards colonial authority. Early in the 20th century, the establishment of the Commissie voor de Inlandsche School- en Volkslectuur (Committee for Indigenous Schoolbooks and Popular Reading Books), a government-subsidised institution, provided the growing number of literate people in the Indies with 'good' and 'appropriate' reading materials. Its development marked the end of an era when Sundanese writing competed with Western-style schools and publications, and signalled the triumph of the new colonial modernity.

NUS Press Isan Writers, Thai Literature: Writing and
Book SynopsisRegional characteristics and regional language feature prominently in discussions of Thai identity, but there is little mention of regional literatures. In northeastern Thailand’s Isan region, authors write primarily in Thai, but it is possible nonetheless to identify an Isan literature, which played a significant and at times pivotal role in the development of Thai literature in the second half of the twentieth century, as authors grappled with how their origins and experiences related to the Thai centre. Martin Platt’s account of Isan literature is an important first step toward a broader study of regional literatures in Thailand, and shapes a model that has relevance for examining literary works in other Asian countries. Martin B. PLATT is Associate Professor in the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen.
