Columbia University Press Humanist Reason A History. An Argument. A Plan
Book SynopsisEric Hayot argues that it is time to make a positive case for what the humanities are and what they can become. Humanist Reason lays out a new vision that moves beyond traditional disciplines to demonstrate what the humanities can tell us about our world.Trade ReviewEric Hayot writes so beautifully, and with such breathless command of a central epistemological dilemma, that the book’s excitement reaches well beyond the confines of German philosophy. Witty, thrilling, and even moving in the depth of its commitment, this short book is about nothing less than rethinking the university. -- William Germano, coauthor of Syllabus: The Remarkable, Unremarkable Document That Changes EverythingIn Humanist Reason, Eric Hayot brings a distinctive mix of chutzpah and erudition to bear on what have seemed to be intractable debates about the role of the humanities in public life, the organization of academic disciplines, and the future of higher education. With clarity of purpose, bravery, and admirable pragmatism, he calls not only for new thinking—but also for new action. -- Rebecca L. Walkowitz, author of Born Translated: The Contemporary Novel in an Age of World LiteratureThe history of the humanities is a catalogue of grand moral claims and ethical exhortations. The humanities shape souls, form democratic citizens, reveal a common humanity. They are said to do whatever they are needed to do for any given group at any given time. With pithy prose, careful argument, and obvious excitement, Hayot casts these mythological accounts aside in order to draw our attention on the practice of humanist reason. By focusing on what humanist scholars do and not what they or their self-appointed spokespeople say they do, he reminds us that whatever consolations and succor the humanities might afford, humanities scholarship is a distinct form of reason that helps us know, understand, and care for this world and the people and objects that constitute it. This book is not another anxious apology or resentful jeremiad about the decline of the humanities. This is a confident and liberating gift that shows us how and why to practice humanist reason now. -- Chad Wellmon, coauthor of Permanent Crisis: The Humanities in a Disenchanted AgeHumanist Reason proves that it is possible to launch a full-blown defense of the humanities that is centered not around discrete humanistic results or skills, but around what they contribute to the way in which we view and construct knowledge altogether. * 3 Quarks Daily *Students presently earning degrees in humanities and interdisciplinary studies will benefit from the situational awareness this text brings to the seemingly endless debates regarding the role of the humanities. But the book will be most useful to chairs, deans, and university leadership defending the liberal arts in the trenches. For them, Hayot’s innovative reorganization of undergraduate courses of study and his 'nine articles of humanist reason' will be excellent grist for the mill. * Choice Reviews *Hayot writes with the lucidity that matches his commitment to rational debate. He bravely threads the needle where others might stay vague. * Public Books *Challenges us to think anew about what it might mean to engage in a practice overtly identified as humanist reason. * German Quarterly *Table of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction1. Book SynopsisThis is the second selection of articles on economic history by Robert-Henri Bautier to be published by Variorum; the first, Sur l'histoire économique de la France médiévale, focused on the infrastructure of economic life within the kingdom of France - the network of land and river routes, and the fairs. The following articles concentrate on the 'Lombards', Italian bankers and merchants, notably from Sienna and Piacenza. Taylor & Francis Ltd Arabiyyat alNaas fii MaSr Part One An
Book SynopsisâArabiyyat al-Naas fii MaSr (Part One) offers a ground-breaking introduction to Arabic as it is written and spoken by native speakers. It combines a progressive and rigorous grounding in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), the register employed for reading, writing and formal speaking, with an innovative integration of the dominant Egyptian variety. Introducing the two simultaneously and seamlessly building on their shared features, âArabiyyat al-Naas fii MaSr (Part One) uses each in its proper context: Egyptian dialect for conversations and MSA for reading and writing activities. In this way, the course efficiently prepares students for the practical realities of learning and living Arabic today.Features include: Expanded grammar explanations and activation drills, including discussions about colloquial and formal similarities and differences A series of authentic video-clips recorded in Egypt to help learners revise the vocabulary and structures then learn unit by unit Extensive classroom activities and homework exercises that provide constant review to reinforce learning Arabic-English and English-Arabic glossaries, reference charts, and a grammar index Songs with simple lyrics tied to the themes of the course to help advance vocabulary acquisition and understanding of basic grammatical structures A companion website (www.routledge.com/cw/weatherspoon) that features fully integrated interactive, self-correcting exercises, audio and video materials, and additional online course management and grading options for teachers A user-friendly and vibrant text design with full colour, richly illustrated throughout with over two hundred illustrations and photos A teachers manual with an Arabic introduction for the teacher, which lays out the structure of the student course book, its methodology and directions and suggestions for its use. Written by experienced teachers of Arabic and experts in Arabic teaching pedagogy, âArabiyyat al-Naas fii MaSr (Part One) is an essential resource for students beginning to learn Arabic. Trade Review"Arabiyyat al-Naas fii MaSr is an added value to the field of teaching Arabic as a foreign language. It provides language learners with a functional language in its cultural context. Compared to other textbooks, the listening, reading, grammar and the drills, in this textbook, are well designed and will bring students to the intermediate low level as it intends. This book stands beyond many Arabic textbooks which are used internationally." Abdellah Chekayri, Assosciate Professor in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Al Akhawayn University, Morocco"It is very important to me to be able to integrate both fusha and colloquial into the classroom. At the same time, I often feel that a large part of my role in teaching first year Arabic lies in helping to humanize Arabic speakers for my non-Arab, non-Muslim students, and this book does an excellent job of presenting a sympathetic approach to the Arab world. In addition, teaching in colloquial – because of the natural warmth and spontaneity of the language – may just help to make learning Arabic a bit less intimidating for our first year students. Because so many of our language teachers are most comfortable with the Egyptian dialect, I think that an Egyptian version of Arabiyyat al-Naas will be a fabulous addition to our teaching toolkit." John Wiley and Sons Ltd From Ashes to Text: Andean Literature of Sexual
Book SynopsisAccording to some chronicles of the Spanish Conquest, the violent arrival of the Conquerors to the Andes in the sixteenth century led to sex-dissident people who lived outside the dominant European cisheteropatriarchal model being burned at the stake. This act burned more than the flesh; it also charred practices, ways of life, and textualities, leaving an emptiness and a trauma that would mark the future literatures of the Andean region. This book cannot repair those pre-sodomite texts and bodies. It seeks instead to reconsider the value of the ash, a metaphor that allows for a critical and contradictory reading of sexual dissidences in the Andean region in the twentieth century, beyond both multiculturalism and the wake of a globalized LGBTI movement. Through a comparative analysis, and drawing on theoretical perspectives such as anticoloniality, feminisms, and cuir (rather than queer) theories, the book aims to understand the value of a series of complex texts in which dissident subjectivities, practices, and desires help to broaden the understanding of the Andean. Winner of the prestigious Casa de las Américas prize, the book was praised by the jury for the paradoxical and provocative way that it struggles against the abyss of past destruction and reflects on the contribution of the Global South to the often uniformist thinking around the body and its intersections.Trade Review"Working through the remnants of colonial sodomitic tropes, Falconí Trávez offers a new localized queer theory and practice that reimagines what a sexually dissident decolonial culture can be, and brilliantly queers in the process both Euro-American queer theory and the Andean literary canon."Arnaldo Cruz-Malavé, Fordham UniversityTable of ContentsAcknowledgementsForeword – Joseph PierceInstructions for Reading this Book: By Way of an Introduction1. Princeton University Press Landscape as Urbanism
Book SynopsisTrade Review"Shortlisted for the 2017 Urban Design Book Award, Urban Design Group""Before our cities were grids of asphalt, brick, and steel, they were islands, wetlands, and deserts. For centuries, urbanism relied on the engineer to reconstruct the natural environment around the built environment. But in our era of populist environmentalism, urbanism looks more than ever to the landscape architect. This book reflects on the transformation in which the landscape architect, by adapting human infrastructure to nature, is really the ultimate urbanist." * Metropolis *"In Landscape as Urbanism, one of the field's pioneers presents a powerful case for rethinking the city through landscape. Generously illustrated, [the book] examines works from around the world by designers ranging from Ludwig Hilberseimer, Andrea Branzi, and Frank Lloyd Wright to James Corner, Adriaan Geuze, and Michael Van Valkenburgh." * ArcSpace *"Rich in bold ideas."---Jared Green, The Dirt"For decades, New Urbanism was the only acceptable form of urban planning in the United States. In the past 15 years, however, several challengers have appeared on the scene, none bolder than the landscape urbanism movement. Spearheaded by Charles Waldheim, who chaired the Department of Landscape Architecture at Harvard's Graduate School of Design (GSD) from 2009 to 2015, the movement and its protagonists argue that landscape, more than buildings, has fundamentally changed the way cities urbanize in the 21st century. Waldheim's new book, Landscape as Urbanism . . . reflects on the origins of landscape urbanism and theorizes about its continued cultural relevance."---Samuel Medina, Metropolis"Talking about landscape urbanism is more like telling a story than theorizing a practice, and Waldheim tells this story well, with an authority arising from his key role in developing landscape urbanism. . . . As a history teacher faced with endless questions from students who love the idea of it but can't really work out what it is, I am grateful to Waldheim for his new book: Now I can give some readings that have some clarity, accompanied by great writing."---Julian Raxworthy, Landscape Architecture Magazine"Charles Waldheim, Irving professor of landscape architecture, advances a theoretical underpinning for breaching the barriers that have separated urbanism and landscape; the aim is a more coherent view of what cities can be." * Harvard Magazine *"[A] thorough and highly researched book."---David Sisam, Canadian Architect"A timely and fascinating book."---National Urban Design Awards 2017"Suffice to say, as one of the leading voices and purveyors of landscape urbanism, there is no better guide to the subject than Charles Waldheim. As such, Landscape as Urbanism: A General Theory stands in a league of its own, not only as a summary of Waldheim's work on the subject to-date, but also as a convincing and powerful argument for the relevance of landscape as a lens through which the contemporary city must be engaged."---Erick Villagomez, Spacing

MIT Press On Linearization Toward a Restrictive Theory
Book SynopsisThe first attempt at a restrictive theory of the linear order of sentences and phrases of the world's languages, by one of the founders of cartographic syntax.Linearization, or the typical sequence of words in a sentence, varies tremendously from language to language. Why, for example, does the English phrase “a white table” need a different word order from the French phrase “une table blanche,” even though both refer to the same object? Guglielmo Cinque challenges the current understanding of word order variation, which assumes that word order can be dealt with simply by putting a head either before or after its complements and modifiers. The subtle variations in word order, he says, can provide a window into understanding the deeper structure of language and are in need of a sophisticated explanation. The bewildering variation in word order among the languages of the world, says Cinque, should not dissuade us from researching what, if any

Zondervan An Introduction to Biblical Greek Grammar
Book SynopsisAn Introduction to Biblical Greek Grammar focuses on the linguistic and syntactic elements of Koine Greek to equip learners for accurate interpretation. Drawing upon twenty years of Greek teaching experience and the latest developments in linguistics and syntax, Harris introduces students to basic linguistic concepts and categories necessary for grasping Greek in ways that are clear and intuitive. This solid foundation enables students first to internalize key concepts, then to apply and build upon them as more complex ideas are introduced.Several features are specifically designed to aid student''s learning: Key concepts are graphically coded to offer visual reinforcement of explanations and to facilitate learning forms and identifying their functions Key concepts are followed by numerous examples from the Greek New Testament Students learn how to mark Greek texts so that they can begin to see the syntax, identify the boundaries of syntactTrade Review'A great Greek textbook is up-to-date on Greek studies and linguistics, but functions as a simple and clear guide for (often intimidated) beginning students. It ought to be visually appealing with assignments that are challenging but not overwhelming. It should include plenty of examples and illustrations without a back-breaking page count. Impressively, Harris's introduction accomplishes all these things. Students can be relieved that this textbook will introduce Greek plainly; instructors can rest assured that the material is reliable and represents the state of biblical Greek scholarship.' * NIJAY K. GUPTA, professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary *'An excellent new introduction to biblical Greek from an experienced professor! Dana Harris helpfully positions Koine Greek within a historical context and introduces it from a linguistic and theological perspective. Based on current scholarship and using modern linguistic terminology, this well-structured grammar features clear presentations, ample student resources, and abundant examples from the New Testament. A stand-out first-year grammar.' * KAREN H. JOBES, Gerald F. Hawthorne Professor Emerita of New Testament Greek and Exegesis, Wheaton College and Graduate School *'Anyone who has taught first-year Greek or learned it knows one of the challenges is often a review of English as one is learning a new, quite foreign language. Dr. Harris's first-year grammar does an excellent job of bridging the languages, much like good translation must do. The direction on everything linguistic, syntactic, and semantic is carefully and fairly set forth, as well as teaching the forms required to engage the Greek. A first-year student will be well served by this text.' * DARRELL L. BOCK, executive director for cultural engagement, Howard G. Hendricks Center for Christian Leadership and Cultural Engagement and senior research professor of New Testament Studies, Dallas Theological Seminary *'Dana Harris has written a textbook that equips readers to appreciate the way Koine Greek works. Consequently, reading the Greek New Testament becomes more about understanding rather than merely recognizing the language. With clear discussion and examples, Harris guides readers in a way that prepares them for deeper exegetical study. Harris's conversational and practical presentations will greatly assist teachers as well as students.' * DENNIS R. EDWARDS, associate professor of New Testament, North Park Theological Seminary *'Greek grammars in most cases all do the same thing: nouns and verbs and participles and vocabulary and exercises and parsing. In the last two decades, evangelical scholars have offered significant proposals for understanding our Greek New Testament, but the results have only occasionally trickled into a beginning grammar. With Dana Harris's new complete analysis of Greek grammar, students can become officially current. What makes this up-to-date and comprehensive grammar most beneficial is that students, once they have worked their way through this with a teacher and class, will want to return to this grammar to deepen their learning. Most grammars, once used, are put on the shelf rarely to be used again. Not this one. A real godsend for students.' * SCOT MCKNIGHT, professor of New Testament, Northern Seminary *'Most first-year biblical Greek grammars present the outcome--what the student needs to know. This one focuses on the process--the building blocks of understanding that enable informed interpretation. In that sense it is not so much a teacher's grammar (though teachers will love it) as a teaching grammar. The focus is not merely on 'what' must be learned but on the why and how that lead to textual comprehension. Enriched by the author's quarter century of Greek study and instruction in the traditional classroom as well as online, this grammar will become a standard textbook for both traditional and distance-learning settings. Written out of love for both learning and God's word, it supports student acquisition of a working knowledge of New Testament Greek in fresh, nuanced, and pedagogically effective ways.' * ROBERT W. YARBROUGH, professor of New Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary *'Written by a trained linguist and an experienced language teacher, this volume does not merely provide a first-rate textbook for beginning Greek courses. It also allows students to begin their journey in interacting with the Greek New Testament within a framework informed by the latest developments in linguistics and Greek grammar. To identify any one textbook in this crowded field as the most pedagogically effective may seem like an overstatement, but many of our Greek instructors who have used early drafts of this work can find no better way to describe it. If you are serious about learning Greek, there is no need to look elsewhere.' * DAVID W. PAO, professor of New Testament and chair of the New Testament department, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School *

Elliott & Thompson Limited Why Is This a Question?: Everything About the
Book Synopsis'As entertaining as it is engrossing' John Banville 'Enlightening, delightful' Arthur der Weduwen, author of The Library Why don’t eleven and twelve end in –teen? The rest of our counting system sits in neatly arithmetical sets of ten, so why do these two rulebreakers seem so at odds with the numbers that follow them? Admittedly, that’s probably a question that might never have occurred to you. But if you’re even remotely interested in the origins and oddities of language, it’s likely also a question you’re now intrigued to know the answer to. Nor is it the only question: take a moment to think about how our language operates and even more spring mind. Why do these letters look the way they do? Why are some uppercase and others lowercase? Why are these words in this order? How are you understanding what these seemingly arbitrary shapes and symbols mean, while doubtless hearing them read to you in a voice inside your head? And what is this question mark really doing at this end of this sentence? Books explaining the origins of our most intriguing words and phrases have long proved popular, but they often overlook the true nuts and bolts of language: the origins of our alphabet and writing system; grammatical rules and conventions; the sound structure of language; and even how our brains and bodies interpret and communicate language itself. Why Is This a Question? is a fascinating and enlightening exploration of linguistic questions you’ve likely never thought to ask. ‘Every page will make you stop, think and wonder.’ James Hawes, author of The Shortest History of England ‘Enthralling, with a riveting “who knew?” moment on nearly every page.’ Caroline Taggart, author of Humble Pie and Cold Turkey Trade Review’As entertaining as it is engrossing’ John Banville ’Enlightening, delightful’ Arthur der Weduwen, author of The Library ‘Every page will make you stop, think and wonder.’ James Hawes, author of The Shortest History of England ‘Enthralling, with a riveting “who knew?” moment on nearly every page.’ Caroline Taggart, author of Humble Pie and Cold Turkey ‘Deft, informative, and packed with fascinating morsels’ Lev Parikian, author of Light Rains Sometimes Fall ‘[Paul Anthony Jones is] a first-rate collector of linguistic curios’ Times Literary Supplement
