Book SynopsisThis is the first Western monograph since a century about a genre, cherished by Arab literati: the pre-Islamic dirge (martiya) by women. It dwells on the problem of the authenticity of these texts. Metre and rhyme of this genre are discussed in relationship to the genres predecessor - niyâha - and the dominating qasîda. Unlike the latter, the martiya does not have a clear thematical order, although the poem is often introduced by a dialogue, followed by a laudatory part, which serves to legitimize the break of self control, and finally some general remarks on Fate and Death. Marâtî were sometimes composed to comment on historical events. A poetess like al-Kansâ' used her marâtî in early Islam to emphasize pre-Islamic values.

  • Peeters Publishers Aegeans in the Theban Tombs

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe wall paintings of several Theban tombs represent foreigners who present gifts that are sometimes typically Cretan or Aegean. Other foreigners, although labeled "Princes of Keftiu" (Crete), are represented as Asiatics. The aim of the present volume is to analyze these wall paintings in order to distinguish the Aegeans and their gifts. The author manages to establish their characteristics in nine Theban tombs, divides chronologically in two groups, and shows that the related figures reflect actual Aegeo-Egyptian relations in the time of the XVIIIth dynasty, down to c. 1470/1450 BC. This result is obtained by a careful comparison of represented gifts with undoubtedly Minoan objects and documents from the Aegean, especially Crete.

Book Synopsis"These Things Have Been Written" calls to mind the fashion in which the Fourth Gospel was written, with particular emphasis upon Johannine characterization. In various ways it elucidates many facets of the evangelist's notion of faith. The final chapters focus on the incarnation of the Word and the new commandment of love. Raymond F. Collins is professor of New Testament Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium, and former rector of The American College affiliated with the university. A specialist in the New Testament's Johannine and Pauline literature, he has published a number of significant books on the New Testament including an "Introduction to the New Testament" (1983), "Studies on the First Letter to the Thessalonians" (1984), and the "Letters That Paul Did not Write" (1988).

The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Book SynopsisThe attempt at inculturation of the Catholic Church in India has given birth to Catholic ashrams. The essence and raison d'etre of a traditional ashram is the figure of the guru. "The Guru in Indian Catholicism" is a reflection on the implications, problems and possibilities of introducing the Hindu notion of the guru into the Catholic tradition. Catherine Cornille, a frequent visitor of the East, where she has studied and lectured, presently teaches courses in the Comparative Study of Religions at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. Her current research focusses mainly on the new religious phenomena emerging from the encounter of religions and cultures.

Throughout a long teaching career in the United States and Belgium, his two main concerns have been the inculturation of Christianity in the Various continents and particular contexts, and the theological reflection on religious pluralism. The contributions to this collection are therefore centered around these two topics. Valeer Neckebrouck and Catherine Cornille are Frank De Graeve's successors in the fields of Missiology and the Comparative Study of Religions, respectively. Valeer Neckebrouck is the author of "La Tierce Eglise devant le probleme de la culture" among numerous other works, and Catherine Cornille's "The Guru in Indian Catholicism" has already appeared in this series.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe archive of the Theban choachytes contains over 80 texts, Greek and demotic. They are largely private documents that together constitute the papers of a family of choachytes (undertakers). It is known since the beginnings of modern Egyptology and Papyrology as the "Hermias Archive" after the antagonist of the choachytes in a now famous Greek law suit kept in Turin. Although its bilingual information contributed in no uncertain measure to the decipherment of demotic, a large part of this fundamentally demotic archive is still not or not properly published. This Survey reviews for each text, Greek or Demotic, all relevant data in great detail and determines its exact place within the whole of the archive. The second half of the book presents the study of a number of special subjects that emerge from the contentts of the archive, such as the topography of Thebes (city and necropolis), prosopography, mummies and liturgies, but also more general subjects as onomastics, prices and transfer tax (enkyklion), and the diplomatics of the documents.

1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe homily "On the Succession of the Kings and the End of Times" attributed to bishop Methodius of Patara (died ca. 311) is one of the most influential non-biblical apocalyptic texts both in Eastern and in Western Christianity. Written about 692 in Iraq by a Syriac-speaking Christian, it was soon translated into Greek and Latin, and subsequently into many other languages in East and West. The present edition offers the first critical text based on all extant Syriac textual witnesses, including references to the forthcoming new edition of the oldest Greek and Latin recensions by W.J. Aerts and G.A.A. Kortekaas in the Subsidia of CSCO. The present volume also includes the facsimile edition of the text (difficult of access) in the Oriental manuscripts Mardin Orth. 368 and Mardin Orth. 891. The German translation is provided with a comprehensive apparatus of explanatory notes and preceded by and introductory essay discussing the historical, religious and literary aspects of this important text, which may be considered as one of the earliest Christian responses to the rise of Islam.

  • Peeters Publishers Progress in Unity? Fifty Years of Theology within

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAs an expert and lively tour-guide, Brinkman takes the reader through the breathtaking landscape of a half-century of ecumenical dialogue. The author makes an invaluable contribution by his deft selection of documents, his thought-provoking commentary on key issues, and his keen discernment of the missionary challenge that faces the church of Christ as it travels on the road to greater visible unity. the work is equally suitable for personal reading and for the college or seminary classroom. A veritiable feast for ecumenical and evangelical readers. This work is a refreshing stimulus to reflection, prayer, and action for the unity and mission of the church in a troubled world. George Vandervelde President of the North American Academy of Ecumenists, Professor of Systematic Theology, Institute for Christian Studies, Toronto, Canada One thing becomes clear from Martien Brinkman's book : those who claim that the ecumenical movement went into a deadlock have not studies its results. Most people suffer from a lack of memory when it comes to the history of ecumenical theology during the past 70 years. This book provides medicine for ecumenical amnesia. It deals especially with the Faith and Order Movement and Commission, within the World Council of Churches. There flows, from Brinkman's book a whole new stream of an ecumenical theological tradition which is scarcely known, even to academic theologians. This tradition treats of such matters as Scripture and Tradition, Faith and Sacraments, Church, World and Kingdom of God. This book provides an excellent overview and in-depth evaluation of the major currents in this developing ecumenical tradition. It will certainly promote its reception in the churches and its study in the academy. At the same time, however, it keeps an eye open for the difficulties and tensions of the dialogue between ecumenical amd evangelical Christians, and between the theological methods of the North and the South. It will be difficult to find any more reliable study-guide to the results of the multilateral ecumenical dialogues of the twentieth century. Anton Houtepen Professor of Ecumenism, University of Utrecht, The Netherlands This book, conceived as a study-guide to the Faith and Order Movement, does precisely what it sets out to do and does it well. It brings the reader into close contact with the documents and studies published by this influential section of the World Council of Churches. Such an inventory comes at the right time, just as the Commission on Faith and Order takes stock after the World Conference of Santiago, and under the guidance of a new director. It is no secret that Faith and Order has been invited to reflect upon its future orientation. The well-documented and orderly survey which Prof. brinkman offers us here will certainly be of help in such a process.

  • Peeters Publishers Studies in Ancient Hebrew Semantics

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis publication is a collection of studies devoted to various aspects of the semantics and lexicography of Ancient Hebrew. All contributions except the last two were originally delivered as papers to a symposium held in July 1994 at Leiden University. The symposium rounded off a three-year-long international network funded by the European Science Foundation under the leadership of Prof. Dr. J. Hoftijzer, from whose contribution to the present volume one may gain an insight into the conception and philosophy of the research project and its history so far. This volume will, in addition to some earlier publications which have appeared in the Zeitschrift fur Althebraistik, give the reader some idea of the general thinking which has assisted the authors in the formulation of their approach to the task lying before them. It ought to be emphasised, however, that all the studies appearing in this volume ought to be of interest to any Hebraist and Old Testament scholar, for they are hardly "in-house" publications, but address some important aspects of the Ancient Hebrew semantics and lexicography.

  • Peeters Publishers A Healthy Rivalry. Human Rights in the Church

Book SynopsisHuman rights in the Church...The combination, human rights and the Church, is not always an easy one, although church authorities increasingly promote human rights and their meticulous application in civil society. This book aims to describe human rights in the Church as they already exist today (in the 1983 Code of Cann Law, in everyday practice) and as they can be developed in the future. Human rights in the Church could be promoted by the development of a health legal culture and by simulating independent responsibility among the Christian faithful. By using existing canon law as creatively as possible and by promoting reasonable changes with an eye to the future, the quality of internal church life can be improved without endangering theological foundations. Indeed, good legal structures are a matter of justice. Finally, this book is a plea for constructive dialogue in the Church. The faithful and the hierarchy are not enemies. They share a common source of inspiraton which is not vitiated by their choice of rival philosophical or pastoral options. Indeed, a healthy rivalry between committed Christians can be a real gain for the life of the Church. Rik Torfs, Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law K.U.Leuven, Lic. Iur., Not., J.C.L., J.C.D. (Leuven). Before joining the faculty of Canon Law, he taught at the University of Utrecht (K.T.U.). He also teaches at Antwerp University (U.I.A.). He is a member of the Executive Committee of the European Consortium for Church and State Research (Milan) and editor of the "European Journal for Church and State". His research and publications are in the field of general norms of Canon Law, Catholic hospitals and schools, marriage law and the realtions between Church and State.

Book SynopsisElija, east-Syrian (nestorian) bishop of al-Anbar west of Baghdad flourished in the first half of the Xth century. His voluminous Ktaba d-Durrasa (Book of Instruction) is composed of metrical stanzas and consists of thirty centuries (therefore known as Ktaba d-Ma'wata), arranged in ten Memre. It is a work of didactic poetry, deeply influenced by Dionysius the Areopagite and his theory of symbolism. We meet a manual of theoria based on Scripture, nature and tradition addressed to monks (and clergy?) and reflecting their hierarchical order of illumination. Of special interest are the large portions with mainly typological explanations of the AT and the NT. From 19 manuscripts of western and eastern libraries a solid text (the common archetype of ca. the 12th/13th century) is established. The second part (Memre IV-VI) is in preparation.

Book SynopsisThe edition is a diplomatic edition based on the text of the Arabic version of IV Ezra as found in the unique tenth-century manuscript Ms Mt Sinai Arabic Codex 589 which contains the full text of this version. It is a translation of a Syriac text closely related to the sole survivor in Ms Milan, Ambrosian Library, B. 21 Inf. It is not identical with any of the other known Arabic versions of IV Ezra, which appear to have been translated from the Greek. The introduction to the edition contains a description of the manuscript, a discussion of its orthography and its scribal mistakes and of the adopted method of text edition. The translation is an annotated translation. The introduction deals among others with the relation between the Syriac version of IV Ezra and its Arabic translation, the fragment in Ms Berol. Sprenger 30 (Ahlwardt 9434), the relation between the Arabic version of IV Ezra and the Arabic version of the Apocalypse of Baruch in the same manuscript and the occurence of Middle Arabic elements in the text.

  • Peeters Publishers Deuteronomy and Deuteronomic Literature:

Book SynopsisThe volume is presented to Professor C.H.W. Brekelmans in celebration of his 75th birthday. The editors were of the opinion that there could be no better way to honour Chris Brekelmans than with a collection of articles treating the "Deuteronomic" traditions found in the Book of Deuteronomy as well as in the so-called Tertrateuch, and Deuteronomistic History. In the past years, a renewed impetus has been given to the development of Deuteronomic Studies. The present Festschrift aims at contributing to the current debate which has a special interest in methodological questions regarding the identification and characterization of "Deuteronomistic" texts in the aforementioned complexes of Old Testament writings. The volume is divided into four sections. The first section offers a collection of articles which focus on the Book of Deuteronomy itself. The second section contains contributions dealing with Deuteronomic History. The third section is devoted to the relationship between the Deuteronomic - in the largest sense of the word - traditions and the Tetrateuch. The fourth and final section presents a collection of articles on a number of important issues, each of which offers its own direct or indirect contribution to the study of the Deuteronomi(sti)c literature and its relationship to the remaining texts of the Old Testament.

  • Peeters Publishers Symbols of Transcendence: Religious Expression in

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe dynamic of religious expression employs symbolic language, actions, and art. These symbols are symbols of transcendence because it is transcendence which is the unique referent that sets apart symbols which give rise to religious understanding from symbols which do not. The main objective of this book is to demonstrate that in Louis Dupre's work all religious expression, insofar as it has a transcendent reference, is intrinsically symbolic. Religious language is never purely objective nor purely subjective, but a dialectical relation with a transcendent dimension. True to the teachings of Dupre, this book uncovers that without a transcendent referent, religious symbols lose their religious significance. This is the plight of the (late-post)modern condition which resulted from the fracturing of nature into its cosmic, human and transcendent components. To regain a sense of transcendence the believer is forced to make an inward turn akin to the mystical practice of past ages. This does not recover a sense of transcendence for culture but can do so for the believer's personal spiritual life.
