So wurde er zum Symbol der aufgehenden Sonne und der Regeneration par excellence. Um das Wesen des Gottes, seine Rolle innerhalb des agyptischen Pantheons und seine Bedeutung fur die diesseitige wie jenseitige Welt von Konigen und Privatleuten zu ergrunden, wurden schriftliche und ikonographische Zeugnisse aller Gattungen aus allen Verbreitungsgebieten und Epochen der agyptischen Kultur zusammengestellt und untersucht. Das Material reicht von Pyramidentexten des Alten Reiches bis zu Tempelinschriften der griechisch-romischen Zeit, von Skulpturen, Reliefs und Malereien aus Tempeln und Grabern bis hin zu romischen Mumienmasken. Book SynopsisThis first fascicule of the Final Report on the excavations at Tepe Nush-i Jan, located some 60 km south of Hamadan, provides a detailed account of the five seasons of excavation conducted between 1967 and 1977 as well as a comprehensive description of the temples and associated buildings belonging to the site's main Median occupation. The importance of the site lies principally in the architectural remains constructed in the eighth and seventh centuries BC when the Medes were the dominant population in central western Iran. In the order in which they were built, the monumental buildings of this hill-top sanctuary include an originally isolated tower-like temple which housed a stepped altar on which fire was burnt, a second temple, a strongly fortified storage facility, and a columned hall with three rows of four columns - a forerunner of the famed columned halls of the Persians at Pasargadae and Persepolis. In a remarkable development most of these distinctive structures came to be at least partly filled and encased with stones and mud-brick. As a result, the buildings proved to be in an exceptional state of preservation with intact doorways and, on occasion, intact ceilings as well. Subsequently, probably in the sixth century BC, squatters occupied those structures to which they could still obtain access. Before Tepe Nush-i Jan was investigated there was little or no evidence for the archaeology of the Medes from their own homeland. Today other sites, such as Godin Tepe and Ozbaki Tepe (not to mention fortified 'frontier posts' such as Tell Gubba), can be recognized as belonging to the same culture. Above all else, Nush-i Jan offers a striking picture of the achievements of the Medes, particularly in the field of architecture.

The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

Or, si celle-ci permet de preciser les termes de l'evolution de ces moyens d'expression, elle nous fait egalement discerner deux versions d'une speculation sur la nature du roi divin en relation avec l'Inondation. Osiris, Ramses, Thot et le Nil: ainsi pourrait-on resumer le programme iconographique de ces chapelles.

Book SynopsisAmong the different kinds of "ladders", there was the classified vocabulary, of which several anonymous examples have survived in the manuscripts. These "ladders" group together Bohairic words relating to, for example, geographical features, meteorological phenomena, birds, beasts, creeping things, palm trees, fruits, vegetables and so on. Within each section the words were listed without special order. These "ladders", too, follow examples set by Arabic lexicographers. The "ladder" edited here is an example of this category. It alone is ascribed in the manuscripts to a named author, Shams al-Ri'asah Abu al-Barakat Ibn Kabar (died 10 May, 1324 A.D.). He is presumably identical with the priest of the church called al-Mu'allaqah in Old Cairo, al-Shams Ibn Kabar, who also bore the name Barsauma, who is mentioned in the colophon of Berlin Arabic 10173. He served as secretary to the Mamluk official Baybars al-Mansuri. Besides this "ladder", he composed an ecclesiastical encyclopedia, "The Lamp (that Illuminates) the Darkness and the Elucidation of the Liturgy", and a collection of sermons for feasts and special occasions. His "ladder" is commonly called the Great Ladder, presumably because it is the most complete example of the classified vocabulary. In addition, it attempts to organize the different classifications in a more logical order than is usual for the anonymous classified vocabularies. It is divided into ten books.

Book SynopsisThe cemetery of el-Gerzeh (dated to c. 3600-3350 BC) excavated in 1910-11, seemingly provided the first evidence of Predynastic 'Naqada culture' outside its previously documented social field in Upper Egypt. Moreover, the distinctive character of the assemblage later led Petrie to use the cemetery as the type-site for his 'Gerzean' culture. Despite the apparent significance of the cemetery, the excavation report was brief. Fortunately, the tomb cards from the excavation still exist and almost 300 artefacts from the site have been accessioned into several museums. This book brings together this material for the first time and by utilizing recent archaeological and anthropological theories reassesses its significance. Through the central theme of social identities, together with subsidiary issues concerning scale and the role of funerary practices in ancient communities, the material from Gerzeh is presented and interpreted more fully.

Book SynopsisUn manoscritto unico, copiato intorno al 1900 nella regione di Urmia (attuale Iran), ci ha restituito una collezione di discorsi di Isacco di Ninive fino ad ora sconosciuta. Le fonti antiche informano circa l'esistenza di piA' collezioni di suoi discorsi, ma sino a qualche decennio fa solo la Prima collezione era nota. Negli anni ottanta del secolo scorso e stata ritrovata la Seconda collezione, in seguito parzialmente edita, ed ora con quest'opera di fornisce la Terza collezione. Il manoscritto di Teheran, che resta unico per l'insieme dei discorsi, ha consentito l'individuazione di altri testimoni parziali, in siriaco e in arabo, che sono stati cosi collazionati con il manoscritto principale. Qui si fornisce dunque l'edizione critica dell'insieme, che tiene conto di tutti i testimoni siriaci e, per alcuni passi, anche della versione araba. Il secondo volume contiene invece la traduzione dei testi, corredata di un apparato di note volto in primo luogo a mettere in luce i paralleli lessicali e concettuali con le altre due collezioni isacchiane.

Negli anni ottanta del secolo scorso e stata ritrovata la Seconda collezione, in seguito parzialmente edita, ed ora con quest'opera di fornisce la Terza collezione. Il manoscritto di Teheran, che resta unico per l'insieme dei discorsi, ha consentito l'individuazione di altri testimoni parziali, in siriaco e in arabo, che sono stati cosi collazionati con il manoscritto principale. Qui si fornisce dunque l'edizione critica dell'insieme, che tiene conto di tutti i testimoni siriaci e, per alcuni passi, anche della versione araba. Il secondo volume contiene invece la traduzione dei testi, corredata di un apparato di note volto in primo luogo a mettere in luce i paralleli lessicali e concettuali con le altre due collezioni isacchiane.

Book SynopsisForty-three Syriac and Garshuni manuscripts owned by the Iraqi Department of Antiquities and Heritage are here catalogued and described in great detail. The manuscripts cover major literary genres known to Syriac literature, each of which is discussed in a lengthy introduction with an up-to-date bibliography. To illustrate the contents and styles of the manuscripts, short texts extracted from most of them are given in Syriac and Garshuni with translations in English. Some manuscripts are liturgical and were once the property of Melkite, Syriac Orthodox, Syriac Catholic, and Assyrian churches. Other manuscripts are spiritual and theological compendiums, biblical lectionaries and psalms, Melkite pastoral letters dealing with Roman Catholic devotional practices, charms and popular medicine, and sogyata and durikyata poems. A unique manuscript consists of a Kurdish (Kurmanji) grammar in Syriac authored by a 19th century Chaldean monk living in the Monastery of Rabban Hormizd in northern Iraq. The codices are dated between the 16th and the 19th centuries, though there is one dated to the 14th century, and they were produced in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and central and eastern Anatolia.

The overall theme of the 'Origeniana Decima' is 'Origen as writer'. The first part consists of two essays that deal with two intellectual traditions that had a major influence on Origen, Neo-Platonism and the rabbinic exegetical tradition. Book SynopsisCe livre de la main de Walter van Dievoet, auteur de plusieurs ouvrages sur les orfèvres des Pays-Bas méridionaux, vise à faciliter l’identification de leurs argenteries. De nombreuses photos de poinçons ont été réunies dans la mesure du possible grâce aux ouvrages d’argent se trouvant dans des musées, des églises, des couvents, et dans des collections des antiquaires et des personnes privées, dont l’anonymat a été respecté. Après l’introduction (I) le livre comprend une table des poinçons du métier de Bruxelles permettant en général de dater la pièce d’orfèvrerie (II), et une liste des orfèvres, si possible avec leur poinçon personnel, les données biographiques les plus importantes, et quelques ouvrages connus (III). Certains orfèvres d’autres villes, appelés maîtres subalternes, ont soumis leurs ouvrages pour contrôle au métier de Bruxelles entre 1750 et 1770-72. Comme leurs pièces portent alors des poinçons de Bruxelles, une confusion avec les orfèvres de cette dernière ville est possible. c’est la raison pour laquelle ils sont cités (IV). Un index des noms des orfèvres et un index de leurs poinçons terminent le livre (V). Dit boek, geschreven door Walter van Dievoet, auteur van meerdere werken over de edelsmeden in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden, heeft tot doel de identificatie van hun zilverwerk te vergemakkelijken. Er werden zoveel mogelijk foto’s van de merken van zilveren voorwerpen verzameld uit musea, kerken kloosters, en verzamelingen van antiquairs en privépersonen, van wie de anonimiteit gerespecteerd werd. Na de inleiding (I) bevat het boek een tabel van de merken van het ambacht van Brussel, waaruit meestal het jaartal kan worden afgeleid (II), en een tabel van de edelsmeden met, zo mogelijk, hun persoonlijk merk, de belangrijkste biografische gegevens, en enkele bekende werken (III). Sommige edelsmeden uit andere steden subalterne meesters genoemd, hebben tussen 1750 en 1770-72 bij het Brusselse ambacht hun werken laten keuren. Omdat die werken in dat geval Brusselse keurmerken dragen, is verwarring met Brusselse meesters mogelijk. Daarom worden ze vermeld (IV). Het boek wordt afgesloten met een index van de namen van de edelsmeden en een index van hun merken (V).

Book SynopsisAmong the different kinds of "ladders", there was the classified vocabulary, of which several anonymous examples have survived in the manuscripts. These "ladders" group together Bohairic words relating to, for example, geographical features, meteorological phenomena, birds, beasts, creeping things, palm trees, fruits, vegetables and so on. Within each section the words were listed without special order. These "ladders", too, follow examples set by Arabic lexicographers. The "ladder" edited here is an example of this category. It alone is ascribed in the manuscripts to a named author, Shams al-Ri'asah Abu al-Barakat Ibn Kabar (died 10 May, 1324 A.D.). He is presumably identical with the priest of the church called al-Mu'allaqah in Old Cairo, al-Shams Ibn Kabar, who also bore the name Barsauma, who is mentioned in the colophon of Berlin Arabic 10173. He served as secretary to the Mamluk official Baybars al-Mansuri. Besides this "ladder", he composed an ecclesiastical encyclopedia, "The Lamp (that Illuminates) the Darkness and the Elucidation of the Liturgy", and a collection of sermons for feasts and special occasions. His "ladder" is commonly called the Great Ladder, presumably because it is the most complete example of the classified vocabulary. In addition, it attempts to organize the different classifications in a more logical order than is usual for the anonymous classified vocabularies. It is divided into ten books.
