Book SynopsisThis Companion provides an introduction to the craft of prose. It considers the technical aspects of style that contribute to the art of prose, examining the constituent parts of prose through a widening lens, from the smallest details of punctuation and wording to style more broadly conceived. The book is concerned not only with prose fiction but with creative non-fiction, a growing area of interest for readers and aspiring writers. Written by internationally-renowned critics, novelists and biographers, the essays provide readers and writers with ways of understanding the workings of prose. They are exemplary of good critical practice, pleasurable reading for their own sake, and both informative and inspirational for practising writers. WW Norton & Co The Art of Voice

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisAn award-winning poet, teacher, and “champion of poetry” (New York Times) demystifies the elusive element of voice.Trade Review"Tony Hoagland offers us in his poetry one of the most distinctive voices of our time. Now, in this last work of criticism he completed, he gives us a book focused directly on how a poetic voice is created, how the poet establishes a vivid personality who seems to be standing behind every line, and how in the course of the poem the poet manages to close the distance between speaker and reader to create an intimate bond. Everyone who cares about poetry will profit from this practical and luminous book." -- Carl Dennis"Tony Hoagland was one of our greatest masters of the nuances, complexities, and vagaries of poetic voice. His seductive, deeply moving poems are, as he liked to say, ‘connective,’ beginning in conversation and aspiring to intimacy between a poem’s speaker and its reader. In The Art of Voice, Hoagland meditates on the possibilities available to those who would also aspire to poetic voice…This is a brilliant book by one of this country’s foremost poets." -- Kevin Prufer"Tony Hoagland’s rich scholarly savvy is tethered to the passion of a poet who lived as a poetry teacher. His breezy explications double as intimate, straightforward musings. His insights about audience and tone double as insights about how we speak to one another. The Art of Voice offers poetry as a life force, a means of humanizing a complex world. We are lucky to be left with this work of scrutinizing care and instruction." -- Terrance Hayes"In one of the last critical endeavors of his life, Tony Hoagland lends his extensive Apollonian critical dexterity to answering questions about what makes the who of a poem audible and apt. Anybody who loves poetry—and wants to ponder again that old-fashioned question about the character of our speakers in any genre—has got to read this book." -- Adrian Blevins

I have never encountered such a comprehensive, readable, and heartfelt guide to writing and publishing a transformational book.”— Tami Simon, CEO and founder of Sounds True“Every author or author-to-be has a deep need: that best friend, that cheerleader, that space holder, that wordsmith, that editor, who jumps inside our vision and helps us set our most longed-for book on its feet. Kelly Notaras has written the most approachable, demystifying, and downright accessible book about writing that has ever been written, and, yes, your book will finally get written after you read hers. Case in point: she paved the way for me to write a New York Times bestseller!”— Regena Thomashauer, New York Times best-selling author of Pussy: A Reclamation“In these pages, publishing veteran Kelly Notaras leads you through every step of the creation process, from building a rock-solid narrative structure and crafting a strong hook to pushing through writer’s block and eventually partnering with a literary agent. The Book You Were Born to Write is the consummate guidebook to getting yourself unstuck and, at last, sharing your masterpiece with the world.”— Michelle Burford, #1 New York Times best-selling collaborative writer“Funny, wise, and spilling over with practical advice for bringing your book baby from conception through college, The Book You Were Born to Write is by far the best book I have encountered on the craft of writing and the mystery of publishing. It is also seeded with profound truths about the life of the soul.”— Mirabai Starr, author of God of Love and Caravan of No Despair“I wouldn’t dream of writing a book without Kelly Notaras—and now, quite fortunately, you don’t have to either! The Book You Were Born to Write is a comprehensive and easy-to-follow guide for all things book-writing, publishing, and platform building so you can confidently and skillfully share your message with the world. If you’ve got a book brewing within you, let Kelly demystify the process with a proven plan of action for creation and success.”— Nancy Levin, author of The New Relationship Blueprint“The two best ways to change the world are to have a child and write a book. I can’t help you with the former, but if you want to do the latter, you should start by reading master editor Kelly Notaras’s amazing work, The Book You Were Born to Write. It’s the ultimate resource for everyone who wants to share their wisdom with the world in a profound and lasting way.”— Scott Hoffman, founding partner, Folio Literary Management, LLC, and agent for multiple #1 New York Times best-selling authors“Every writer walks into a labyrinth between the first and the last sentence, and most of us get dead lost. The Book You Were Born to Write was my red thread. I had a sweaty grip on each of these chapters as I made my way through the maze of what I had to say in the book that I was born to write. The gratitude I have is ineffable. This is the book that Kelly Notaras was born to write. And every writer will cling to it like a sacred scripture.”— Meggan Watterson, author of Reveal“As an acquiring book editor, there’s nothing I want more than to fall in love with a great manuscript or proposal. But not all aspiring authors have the information they need to set themselves up for that kind of success. The Book You Were Born to Write walks would be writers through each stage of the book-creation process with expert advice and step-by-step instruction. Read this book and editors everywhere will rejoice!”— Jennifer Hershey, SVP Editor-in-chief, Ballantine Bantam Dell

Book SynopsisThe ultimate guide to reading and writing fiction, with useful creative exercises and fascinating analyses of great plots—from Plato and Tolstoy to The Matrix and Toy Story. The bestselling author of The End of Mr. Y shows you how to unlock any narrative and create your own.   Filled with creative exercises, structures, and charts, this creative writing manual breaks down the fiction writing process and demonstrates that everyone has material to write about—whether they believe it or not. Have you ever had your heart broken, or broken someone else’s heart? Have you ever won an argument but later realized you were wrong? Have you ever tripped in public or spilled wine on someone else’s carpet? Monkeys with Typewriters is an ode to the secret power of stories, and a guide to cracking those powers open. As a bestselling author, Thomas may appear as a naturally gifted writer. However, for Thomas, fiction unlocked itself only once she recognized the importance of an author’s individual experience and one’s willingness to ask questions, not simply provide solutions. She deems the communication of one’s humanity as the key to making a piece relatable, and Thomas does nothing less in her own work.   With startling and original insights into how we construct stories, Monkeys with Typewriters is a creative writing book like no other. It will show you how to not only write, but also to a finer degree, how to read.
