    20 in stock

Book Synopsis"Step out of the circle of timeAnd into the circle of love."- RumiThe circle of divine love is always present within the heart. The journey of the mystic is to retrace this circle and so experience the oneness that is hidden within us.In THE CIRCLE OF LOVE Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, continuing his work of providing a contemporary understanding of Sufism, draws us into this mystery of the soul. He describes the way of mystical prayer and of listening with the heart. He offers valuable insight into power and the spiritual life: how to use one''s power to break free of restrictions and live the joy of one''s divine nature. He explores the primordial question of why we so easily forget our origin in God. Finally, THE CIRCLE OF LOVE takes us deep into the mystical secret of being lost in God, to the centre of the circle where the lover merges into the Beloved and the heart''s deepest truth is revealed. The Persian saying in the front-cover image is from a poem by Hafîz:"We have not come to this doorlooking for greatness and glory."

  • People of the Prophet's House

Azimuth Editions People of the Prophet's House

Book SynopsisDespite their distinct theological differences, Shi'a and Sunni Muslims, followers of the two main branches of Islam, share a number of core beliefs including an allegiance to and love for the Prophet Muhammad and members of his family. For Shi'a Muslims, reverence for the Prophet and allegiance to his household (Ahl al-bayt, 'People of the House'), comprising his immediate family and their descendants, constitutes an essential principle of belief that has directly impacted how Shi'i artists, rulers, patrons and ritual participants have conveyed their love and loyalty through material culture and religious ritual. The 22 essays in this volume, richly illustrated with over 200 coloured images, present a diversity of beliefs and practices expressed through the arts, architecture, material culture and ritual that spans Shi'i history from the tenth century to the present day. With contributions from experts in the fields of anthropology, religious studies, art and architectural history, numismatics, film studies and contemporary art, the book also calls attention to the global diversity of the artistic and devotional expressions ofShi'a Muslims from across Trinidad, Senegal, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, India and China. Additionally, some essays draw upon important female Shi'i figures and female ritual practices and many chapters underscore the theme oflove for the Ahl al-bayt beyond Sunni and Shi'i demarcations. This work contributes to a growing body of scholarship dedicated to the religious arts and rituals ofShi'a Muslims around the world.

Book Synopsis We are pleased to announce the launch of the Journal of the International Qur'anic Studies Association (JIQSA). In support of the association’s mission of fostering scholarship on the Qur'an, the journal will publish twice annually. Articles will be rigorously peer-reviewed through a double-blind review process, with reviewers appointed by the Co-Editors and the international Editorial Board. The journal is being launched at a time of particular vitality and growth in Qur'anic Studies, and its primary goal is to encourage the further development of the discipline in innovative ways. Methodologies of particular interest to the journal include historical-critical, contextual-comparative, and literary approaches to the Qur'an. We welcome articles that explore the Qur'an’s origins in the religious, cultural, social, and political contexts of Late Antiquity; its connections to various literary precursors, especially the scriptural and parascriptural traditions of older religious communities; the historical reception of the Qur'an in the west; the hermeneutics and methodology of Qur'anic exegesis and translation (both traditional and modern); the transmission and evolution of the textus receptus and the manuscript tradition; and the application of various literary and philological modes of investigation into Qur'anic style and compositional structure. • Spiritual Meanings of the Hajj Rituals: A

Fons Vitae,US Spiritual Meanings of the Hajj Rituals: A

Book SynopsisCountless juristic works have been composed on the Hajj and the Umrah—the major and minor Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca—with meticulous attention to the proper manner of performing their rites in keeping with the relevant legal rulings derived from the Qur’an and the Prophetic Sunnah. Far fewer works, however, have been devoted to the inner meanings of these rituals and the spiritual benefit and significance they hold for the pilgrim. Approaching the topic through an etymological and historical analysis of the words used to describe the pilgrimage rites, and tracing the semantic links among relevant terms as they appear in the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic scriptures, this insightful and fascinating study seeks to unlock some of the mysteries hidden within the Hajj rituals. In so doing, it shows that, far from being mere re-enactments of stories from antiquity and their exoteric meanings, these rites function as symbols of inner realities, both earthly and heavenly, and as stages in the pilgrim’s spiritual journey from death to resurrection and hence, to spiritual enlightenment.

  • A History of the Encyclopaedia of Islam

Lockwood Press A History of the Encyclopaedia of Islam

Book SynopsisA History of The Encyclopaedia of Islam is the back story of the decisions that shaped the pre-eminent reference work in the field of Islamic Studies and of the labour that went into it, a story that has not yet been told. It is a record of a monumental, century-long project, undertaken by the greatest scholars of its time; of friendships and rivalries; and of the extraordinary circumstances in which it took shape. As a product of and a contribution to a century's evolving view of Islamic history, civilization, and religion, this history sheds light onto the world of academia, of the individual scholars who contributed to the encyclopedia's success, and of a time-Europe before and after two world wars-and an age of publishing that dramatically changed in its lifetime.Trade Review"The author had access to archives of personal papers and letters, and to documentation in the publisher's records. This has enabled the writing of a work that brings a unique perspective to the history of an invaluable resource, and shines a fascinating light on its creation and backstory, a story that should be of interest to all who use the Encyclopaedia of Islam, for reference, research, or teaching." • Rutgers University Press Far from Mecca: Globalizing the Muslim Caribbean

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisHonorable Mention, 2022 MLA Prize for a First BookFar from Mecca: Globalizing the Muslim Caribbean is the first academic work on Muslims in the English-speaking Caribbean. Khan focuses on the fiction, poetry, and music of Islam in Guyana, Trinidad, and Jamaica. Combining archival research, ethnography, and literary analysis, Khan argues for a historical continuity of Afro- and Indo-Muslim presence and cultural production in the Caribbean. Case studies explored range from Arabic-language autobiographical and religious texts written by enslaved Sufi West Africans in nineteenth-century Jamaica, to early twentieth-century fictions of post-indenture South Asian Muslim indigeneity and El Dorado, to the attempted government coup in 1990 by the Jamaat al-Muslimeen in Trinidad, as well as the island’s calypso music, to contemporary judicial cases concerning Caribbean Muslims and global terrorism. Khan argues that the Caribbean Muslim subject, the “fullaman,” a performative identity that relies on gendering and racializing Islam, troubles discourses of creolization that are fundamental to postcolonial nationalisms in the Caribbean. Trade Review"In Far From Mecca, Aliyah Khan argues that Muslim identity is neither fixed nor uniform, but is instead performative, expressed according to shifting and contingent boundaries that are responses to historical and cultural, and local and global currents. Well-written and clearly argued, this book is a welcome addition to the growing literature on the diversity of Muslims’ histories and representation both in the Caribbean and across the globe." -- Aisha Khan * author of Islam and the Americas *"Aliyah Khan presents a brilliant illumination of alternative texts that relieves Caribbean Islamic adherents from facile postcolonial racial categorizations and grants them fluid identities of the twenty-first-century global subject." -- Patricia Mohammed * author of Imaging the Caribbean: Culture and Visual Translation *"New Books Network - New Books in Caribbean Studies" interview with Aliyah Khan https://newbooksnetwork.com/aliyah-khan%E2%80%AFfar-from-mecca-globalizing-the-muslim-caribbean%E2%80%AFrutgers-up-2020/ * New Books Network - New Books in Caribbean Studies *BAR Book Forum: Aliyah Khan’s “Far from Mecca” by Roberto Sirvent https://www.blackagendareport.com/bar-book-forum-aliyah-khans-far-mecca * Black Agenda Report *"With its focus on Muslim Caribbean life and literature, this book expands and challenges typical takes on and typical data for American religion, Islam in the Americas and around the world, and religion and literature. The book would be well worth a look for someone interested in those fields." * American Religion *"Khan’s book demonstrates how scholars can both appreciate the particularities of the global Muslim experience and the nuanced history of religion in the Caribbean and the Americas....Far From Mecca is a gladly received correction to tired narratives about both global Islam and the Caribbean. My only hope is that it will provoke more conversations and research in this regard. Given Khan’s erudite treatment of the subject, I have no reason to doubt that it will." * International Journal of Latin American Religions *"There lies...intellectual rigour and the scholarly beauty [in] Far from Mecca: this book is intimately personal. Khan takes as her project to bear faithful witness to her own community, past, archival silencings, and liberatory possibilities." * Caribbean Quarterly *"Specialists in Caribbean studies and Islamic World studies will find particularly unique and timely Khan’s insights." * New West Indian Guide *"Khan expands our imagination of what a global Muslim imaginary is, and why that matters. We can no longer understand Muslim communities outside of the Middle East and North Africa as peripheral to what Islam may mean, but rather as constitutive of a global ummah that plays a role in the formation of the many Muslim subjectivities everywhere." * Journal of Indentureship and Its Legacies *Table of ContentsContents Introduction Muslims in/of the Caribbean 1 Black Literary Islam: Enslaved Learned Men in Jamaica, and the Hidden Sufi Aesthetic 2 Silence and Suicide: Indo-Caribbean Fullawomen in Post-Plantation Modernity 3 The Marvelous Muslim: Limbo, Logophagy, and Islamic Indigeneity in Guyana’s El Dorado 4 “Muslim Time”: The Muslimeen Coup and Calypso in the Trinidad Imaginary 5 Mimic Man and Ethnorientalist: Global Caribbean Islam and the Specter of Terror Conclusion: “Gods, I Suppose” Acknowledgments Bibliography About the Author
