  • NIAS Press Modern Muslim Identities: Negotiating Religion

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores a central tension in identity politics: how the state, civil society and people in general may want to create and maintain cultural, religious and social cohesion while paradoxically their practices in everyday life often run counter to this. Malaysia is no exception. Here, a political elite maintains control and cultural dominance but must juggle political pressure from Islamic and Malay supremacists with that from moderate civil society groups. This gives rise to a complex interplay of do mination, accommodation and negotiation between the state and its citizens. At the heart of this study is the conjuncture between Malay ethnicity and Islamic faith, hence its examination of the state discourse on 'civilizational Islam'. However, other areas are also explored, including the arts as a contested space. The result is a thought-provoking study combining philosophical and social theory with anthropological insights.Trade Review'This important study sheds new light on changing Muslim identities in contemporary Malaysia, questioning existing distinctions between state and civil society, religion and secularism and ethnicity and religion and calling for new ways of understanding processes of Islamisation in the modern world.' - Joel S. Kahn, La Trobe University 'It is simply a first-class piece of work, one of real intellectual distinction and substantive originality. It offers an important commentary on the current Malaysian situation, and how it has been sedulously fashioned over recent history, and so makes a significant contribution to Malaysian studies.' - Clive Kessler, University of New South Wales 'This marks an original and very timely contribution to Malaysian studies. Hoffstaedter has demonstrated the profound effects of state religious policies and ideologies upon the everyday identities of practicing Muslims. He does this with great ethnographic nuance and original theoretical insights.' - Andrew Willford, Cornell University 'Gerhard Hoffstaedter presents a thought provoking case study on the many social and political forces that have interacted to push Malay identity along an exclusive trajectory. - This is a dangerous pattern, unfortunately discernable also in other parts of the Muslim world.' - Shahram Akbarzadeh, University of MelbourneTable of ContentsPreface and Acknowledgments; 1. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book generally discusses three main topics connected to the situation of Muslims in Dutch society. First of all, attention is given to the subject of faith and rituals such as the existing mystical orders, mosque sermons and the institutionalization of ritual slaughter. The second subject deals with Islam and the second-generation Muslims in the Netherlands. In this context, the situation of the so-called runaway girls and education in general are discussed. Special attention is given to the development and functioning of Islamic schools and to the education in one's own language and culture. The last topic deals with Muslim organizations, their development and role in the emancipation of these religious groups in Dutch society. Furthermore, obstacles hindering the establishment of a Muslim council on a national level are thoroughly discussed. This book can be of interest to various categories of people, such as scholars (theologians, social scientists, lawyers), policy makers, and those who, through their profession, are in regular contact with members of the Muslim community in the Netherlands.

  • Peeters Publishers Muslim-Christian Perceptions of Dialogue Today:

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe regional and international contexts of the relations between Muslims and Christians have changed during the last fifty years, with important consequences for initiatives by both Christians and Muslims to strengthen cooperation and dialogue. The present book is a stocktaking of experiences and expectations of mutual dialogue by intellectuals on both sides. The main part of the book discusses dialogue efforts made in Indonesia and Egypt, initiatives taken in Morocco and Tunesia, integration of Muslim immigrants in British and Dutch societies. The opening and concluding chapters treat broader questions : should one not speak of dialogue about religions rather than between religions? How do distorted perceptions impede dialogue? What does the Vatican say about dialogue? Has dialogue in fact begun yet? The introduction includes an English summary of the four contributions in French. There is a good bibliography of the subject in Western languages. This is a major intellectual contribution to the normalization of Muslim-Christian relations and, more generally, relations between the Muslim world and the West.

  • Peeters Publishers Dionysius Bar Salibi: A Response to the Arabs

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDionysius bar Salibi's apologetic treatise, "A Response to the Arabs", is the longest and most comprehensive dispute text with Muslims that exists in Syriac. Its main purpose is to acquaint the reader with the essential facts pertaining to Islam and to provide apologetic arguments intended to refute the challenges of Islam to the Christian faith. What sets Bar Salibi's treatise apart from other Syriac dispute texts is the information it contains concerning the history and doctrinal development of Islam. The first two discourses deal with the prophet Muhammad, the emergence of Islam, the "Qurian", and the origins and characteristics of the main Islamic schools of thought. The central beliefs of the Christian faith are explained and defended. The third discourse (chapters 25-30) is made up of the most extensive collection of quotations from the "Qurian" translated into Syriac that exists in any known Syriac dispute text. A parallel column contains Bar Salibi's observations and refutations.

Book SynopsisThis book contains selected papers delivered during the 22nd Congress of L'Union Europeenne des Arabisants et Islamisants, held in Poland, from 29th September to 4th October 2004. The proceedings have been arranged into four thematic sections: (1) Theology and Philosophy, (2) Literature, (3) History of State and Society, and (4) Philology and Linguistics, though quite a number of the papers were of an interdisciplinary character. The authors of the 37 publications presented in this volume represent the international academic community and present in their articles the results of the latest research and studies into the areas touching on history, culture, literature, religion and art to mention a few. They constitute various attempts to answer the following questions: What is the meaning of Authority? and What is the place of the individual in Society? The book is essential source reading for specialists and students. This book is also recommended to all those who wish to become better acquainted with the problems and issues of the Arab-Muslim world.

  • Peeters Publishers Scribal Practices and the Social Construction of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisScribal practices across disciplines are often explored through divisions between words, stiches and verses, sections, scribal hands and marks, correction and copying procedures. This volume offers a different perspective: writing as shown here is, at its heart, a deeply social practice connecting narrative to the different categories of knowledge (linguistic, political, administrative, legal, historical and geographic) and literacy. The twelve essays investigate how scribal practices are related to the construction of knowledge and challenge the conventional boundaries. They address various types of knowledge whose potential is triggered by certain needs and values in the context of Antiquity, Late Antiquity and Medieval Islam from al-Andalus through Egypt, Syria to Iraq, Anatolia and Bactria as far afield as Ethiopia. The vast majority of the papers are related thematically and the overall connection between the articles is the salient feature of this volume. The papers also demonstrate how the local context has shaped scribal practices allowing for cross-cultural comparison.

  • Peeters Publishers Theological Rationalism in Medieval Islam: New

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisThe present volume comprises substantially revised and enlarged versions of papers read at a conference convened in June 2010 by the ERC-Project at the German Orient-Institut in Istanbul. Under the title “Theological Rationalism in Medieval Islam: New Texts and Perspectives”, a group of leading international scholars was invited to introduce important new kalam-texts that have not been the subject of previous studies or to explore new trajectories in studying known key-texts. While most contributions combine both aspects, they are divided into two groups according to the predominating aspect. The first four contributions introduce hitherto unknown or unexplored texts and assess how these can modify and expand our understanding of kalam. The second group of contributions applies novel methodologies in order to identify and interpret historical and conceptual transformations that occurred within kalam or resulted from its interaction with other disciplines. The question whether God can delay the elucidation of vague or unclear statements raises a number of thorny theological questions. It is hoped that the results of these presentations will have an impact beyond their subject matter in that their novel approaches will find their place in the methodological toolbox of kalam scholarship, thus stimulating work that will further expand our knowledge of Muslim kalam.

  • Peeters Publishers Le Festin: Une lecture de la sourate al-Mâ'ida

    2 in stock

  • Song of Teshuvah: Book Four: A Commentary on Rav

Urim Publications Song of Teshuvah: Book Four: A Commentary on Rav

Book SynopsisThis is the only English translation of the esteemed Rav Kook’s book on repentance and self-improvement Rabbi Abraham Isaac HaKohen Kook’s seminal work on repentance, Oros HaTeshuvah, is recognized as a classic of Jewish thought but has, because of its difficult language and its theological depth, remained inaccessible to many. This book presents readers with the original Hebrew text of Oros HaTeshuvah with a new translation into English, as well as expert commentary in English from Rabbi Moshe Weinberger. Weinberger draws on his extensive knowledge of Jewish philosophical and inspirational literature to provide profound, moving, and fresh insights into the text, richly explicating the ideas in Oros HaTeshuvah in an accessible and clear but not superficial manner. Readers will come away with a firm grasp on the profound truth at the heart of Kook’s classic work: that teshuvah—repentance—is not a somber process of self-deprivation but a joyful journey back to God and to the core of each individual. This volume covers chapters 14 through 17 of Oros HaTeshuvah and is the final volume in this series.Trade Review" Song of Teshuvah is unreservedly recommended for synagogue, college, and university library Judaic Studies collections in general, and Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook supplemental studies reading lists in particular." http://www.midwestbookreview.com/wbw/oct_18 JudaicStudies

Book SynopsisWilliam R. Roff has spent more than forty years studying and writing about the modern history of Islam and Muslims, with special reference to Southeast Asia. With interests primarily in social and intellectual history he has contributed essays during this period to a wide range of learned journals and other publications. The present collection reprints a selection of the most notable of these, from historiographical and methodological studies to the development of Islamic educational and other institutions, the nature of the Arab presence in Southeast Asia, and the social significance of the hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca. The author has been a formative influence on two generations of students and other scholars, and this reissue in accessible form of seminal but scattered essays will be widely welcomed.
