Springer Verlag, Singapore Islam and Politics in Bangladesh: The Followers of Ummah
Book SynopsisThis book conceptualizes the politics of Bangladesh through an Islamic concept called ummah or the global brotherhood of Muslims. It demonstrates that, against the backdrop of geopolitics, capitalism and free flow of ideas, localization of this global religious concept at individual level, institutional level, major party platforms and state has cemented the current political condition in Bangladesh in which religiosity, religious intolerance, Islamization and extremism take place. By exploring the effects of ummah in Bangladeshi politics, this book shows how major political parties have mainstreamed political Islam in the country. The book rejects the long standing scholarly claim of religious-secular distinction in Bangladeshi politics and argues that with most Muslim-dominated states, there are no major secular parties in Bangladesh. There are only Islamic parties, which are more or less Islamic. The purely ‘rational’ domain of politics in Bangladesh is long lost, and political Islam sets the framework for politics in the country. The reason behind this logic of Bangladeshi politics is formed, contained and expanded by ummah. Table of Contents1. Introduction2. Beyond Clash of Civilizations and Post Islamism: Ummah(s) and the Muslim World3. Geopolitics of Ummah(s) in Bangladesh- A Historic Narrative4. Awami League, Ummah, and Political Islam5. Institute of Southeast Asian Studies Voices of Islam in Southeast Asia: A Contemporary Sourcebook
Book SynopsisIn an era, when Islam ostensibly lies at the heart of a volatile nexus of a global campaign of/war on terrorism, simplistic notions and dangerous misunderstandings about the cultures and nature of Southeast Asian Islam, in all its variants, are used to inform and justify policies. This collection of contemporary primary source material is designed to promote a deeper understanding of Muslim attitudes to major political, legal, religious and social issues in Southeast Asia through quotations from documents on Islamic law; state and governance; jihad; society, women and the family; personal expressions of faith; and sources of external influence. The sourcebook looks not only at the ideological and doctrinal content, but also at the motivations and psychology underlying different interpretations and viewpoints. The book will enable government officials, academics, security analysts, journalists and general readers to understand the ideologies, motivations, language and objectives of the main Muslim groups in Southeast Asia.Table of ContentsPART I: INTRODUCTION; 1. NUS Press Mosques and Imams: Everyday Islam in Eastern
Book SynopsisIslam is at home in many of the areas of the eastern Indonesia, with the early 15th century Masjid Tua Wapauwe in Northern Maluku arguably the oldest mosque in Indonesia. The studies collected in this volume present a rich introduction to the myriad ways of being Muslim across this diverse archipelago, from Sulawest to Maluku and Nusa Tenggara Timor, as seen through the role of imams and the institution of the local mosque. The volume is not only unique in its geographic coverage, but also in the way it takes as an organizing principle the individuals and institutions that embody Islam in local communities. The book complements and contributes to broader discussions of contemporary issues in Islam and other contemporary religions, including migration, proselytization, networks, and changing models of religious authority. The new ethnographic work presented in each essay here, framed in relation to intersecting themes of religious authority and institutions, will certainly make a substantial contribution to the anthropology of Islam and Muslim societies with considerable resonance beyond the geographic region of its primary focus. It presents an important contribution to the fields of Southeast Asian Studies, Islamic Studies, and the Anthropology of Religion.Trade Review“[This book] raises important questions about religious authority, centre-periphery relations and religious change in Muslim communities…. This empirically rich volume is an important contribution to Indonesian studies specifically and to Islamic studies more broadly.” - SOJOURN: Journal of Social Issues in Southeast AsiaTable of Contents Acknowledgements A Note on Non-English Words Introduction 1. ISEAS The Crescent Arises over the Banyan Tree: A Study of the Muhammadiyah Movement in a Central Javanese Town, c.1910s-2010
Book SynopsisPart One of this book is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted by the author during 1970-72 on a local branch of the Muhammadiyah in the town of Kotagede, a suburb of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. This work, first published in 1983, observed that the Muhammadiyah social and educational movement had reformed traditional Javanese Islam into a vital living faith and adapted Muslim life to modernity. The author was one of the first scholars who had noted that there was continuing Islamisation in Indonesia and predicted its progress in the future. Part Two is based on the author's three decades of follow-up visits to the Kotagede from the 1970s to 2010. During this period, the Muhammadiyah movement made enormous advancements, enough to make the town known as a ""Muhammadiyah town"". On the national level, the Muhammadiyah has grown to be the second largest Islamic civil society organisation (after the traditionalist Nahdlatul Ulama) in Indonesia, with millions of members and supporters. Yet, the wider environment for it has been altered greatly by urbanisation, diversification and globalisation. It is also facing unprecedented challenges arising from calls for democratisation in the post-Soeharto era. The longitudinal study in this volume depicts the most recent dynamics of the Muhammadiyah movement in a local as well as transhistoric context.

ISEAS Indonesian Pluralities: Islam, Citizenship and
Book SynopsisThe crisis of multiculturalism in the West and the failure of the Arab uprisings in the Middle East have pushed the question of how to live peacefully within a diverse society to the forefront. Against this backdrop, Indonesia—as the largest Muslim-majority country in the world and the third-largest democracy—has taken on particular importance. Some analysts say Indonesia offers proof of the compatibility of Islam and democracy, but sceptics argue that the growing religious intolerance that has marred the country's political transition discredits this. Based on a twenty-month project carried out in several regions of Indonesia, Indonesian Pluralities shows that when assessing democracy and citizenship in Indonesia today, we must examine not only elections and official politics but also the less formal yet more pervasive processes of social recognition at work. The contributors demonstrate that in fact citizen ethics are not static discourses but living traditions that co-evolve in relation to broader patterns of politics, gender, religious resurgence and ethnicity in society. ISEAS Muslim Sectarianism Versus the De-Escalation of
Book SynopsisIn 1992, a group of academics at the National University of Malaysia (UKM) organized a seminar titled "Seminar Ahli Sunnah dan Syiah Imamiyyah" ("Seminar on Ahl al-Sunnah and Imami Shi'ism") in Kuala Lumpur. It aimed to demonize Shi'a Muslims and ban Shi'ism, effectively escalating sectarianism in Muslim society.A Deobandi presenter at the seminar by the name of Muhammad Asri Yusoff put forth arguments about Shi'ism, which later became the "intellectual base" for the discrimination and repression of Shi'a Muslims by Islamic authorities in Malaysia. This repression continues till the present day, and other religious leaders—particularly those with a Salafi orientation—take part in this. While much attention has been given to those who have escalated sectarianism, there have also been efforts to de-escalate sectarianism. These efforts come from groups such as Persatuan Ulama Malaysia, and individuals such as Abdul Hadi Awang of PAS, former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, the leader of International Movement for a Just World, Chandra Muzaffar, as well as Malaysian academic, Syed Farid Alatas.Nevertheless, the roots of sectarianism have been deeply laid since the seminar in 1992. Unsurprisingly, the sectarian campaign against Shi'as is aligned with the agenda of extremist and terrorist organizations such as ISIS. The sectarian campaign thus arguably emboldens such groups and puts Malaysia and the entire Southeast Asia at risk.

Springer Verlag, Singapore Islamic Religious Authority in a Modern Age: Australian and Global Perspectives
Book SynopsisThis book situates Australian Muslim experiences of religious authority within the global context of Islam in the modern world. While drawing on examples of Muslim-majority states, new empirical findings indicate the growing diversity of Muslim religious actors in Australia, as well as the contextual realities shaping the way religious authority is legitimised and contested in democratic and authoritarian environments. In particular, the study challenges homogenous articulations of Islamic religious authority in unearthing new voices, epistemologies and socio-political factors shaping Muslim attitudes and experiences of religious authority. The book fills important gaps in the field, such as intra-Muslim relations, female religious authority, digital Islam and the relationship between traditional ulama, reformists and Muslim intellectuals in the West.Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction.- Chapter 2: The Ulama: History, Institutions and Modernity.- Chapter 3: Defining Legitimate Authority.- Chapter 4: Islamic Religious Authority in Australia.- Chapter 5: Collective Religious Authorities.- Chapter 6: Exercising Religious Authority.- Chapter 7: The Role and Authority of Fatwas in Australia.- Chapter 8: Localising Islam: Recruitment, Training and Funding of Imams and ScholarsChapter.- 9: Conclusion.
