Book SynopsisLooks at the internet, not as harbinger of the future or the next big thing, but as an expression of the times. This book demonstrates that our ideas about what connected computers are for have been in constant flux since their invention.Trade ReviewThe Net Effect makes a great contribution to our knowledge on the question of labor in Internet technology. * International Journal of Communciation *The Net Effect is an excellent resource for anyone reseraching the influence of society on technology. * CHOICE *& We are romantics even, and perhaps especially, in the face of high technologies, writes Thomas Streeter. In his profound and illuminating analysis of the interactions between technology and desire, Streeter shows how conflicting visions of the internet have not so much reflected the pre-given triumph of a new technology as shaped the possibilities and limitations of who we are and who we might become. -- Peter Stallybrass,University of PennsylvaniaOne part palm reader and one part politico, Streeter makes total sense of the Internet: its 60s roots, its 90s ethos, and why it works and feels the way it does today. Whether or not you remember firsthand what a long strange trip its been, The Net Effect will persuade you with its lucid rendering of the shared experiences, strange bedfellows, and stealth mythologies that have shaped what it means to be online. -- Lisa Gitelman,NYU, and author of Always, Already New: Media, History, and the Data of CultureTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction 1 "Self-Motivating Exhilaration": On the Cultural Sources of Computer Communication2 Romanticism and the Machine: The Formation of the Computer Counterculture3 Missing the Net: The 1980s, Microcomputers, and the Rise of Neoliberalism4 Networks and the Social Imagination5 The Moment of Wired 6 Open Source, the Expressive Programmer, and the Problem of PropertyConclusion: Capitalism, Passions, Democracy Notes IndexAbout the Author

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this radical and visionary new book, McKenzie Wark argues that the all-pervasive presence of data in our networked society has given rise to a new mode of production, one not ruled over by capitalists and their factories but by those who own and control the flow of information. Yet, if this is not capitalism anymore, could it be something worse? What if the world we're living in is more dystopian than the techno utopias of the Silicon Valley imagination? And, if this is the case, how do we find a way out? Capital Is Dead offers not only the theoretical tools to analyse this new world of information, but the ones to change it, too.Drawing on the writings of the Situationists and a range of contemporary theorists, Wark offers a vast panorama of the contemporary condition and the classes that control it.Trade ReviewOne book from which I drew much courage that I was not wrong to believe that something more fundamental was in play, and that capitalism itself was in question, is McKenzie Wark's 2019 exquisite Capital is Dead: Is This Something Worse? I cannot recommend it too strongly. Many of my ideas resonated loudly with hers. -- Yanis VaroufakisA provocative and compelling exploration of our digital world as it crashes towards ecological disaster. Counter-intuitive, insightful, and imaginative, Capital is Dead is a timely reminder that there are things worse than capitalism - and we may just be living through them. -- Nick SrnicekMcKenzie Wark's call for an experimental, vulgar form of revolutionary approach to digital commodification is a challenging read, full of provocative observation. -- Andy Hedgecock * Morning Star *Wark has long been a brilliant scholar of Marxism, Situationism and Poststructuralism, rewriting the canon of critical theory. -- Dave Beech * Art Monthly *Wark takes a flamethrower to these ideas through a reading of Marx that burns away the metaphors of phantasmagorical fetishes, such as the commodity form, the spectacle, and false consciousness, that have occupied much critical theory to date. -- Vince Carducci * Popmatters *Thoughtful and compelling. -- Garrett Pierman * Marx & Philosophy *

  • What the F*ck is The Cloud?

Hodder & Stoughton What the F*ck is The Cloud?

Book SynopsisWhat the f*ck is the Cloud, and how does it even work?Ah, The Cloud. It's such a useful bit of tech jargon isn't it? The kind that's casually thrown around in work meetings by bosses who (kind of) understand and maybe even at the nerdier type of dinner or drinks parties. People joke about the cloud while others take it for granted and some worry about this mysterious entity where all of our data is stored, accessible at the touch of a screen from anywhere on Earth. But what even is the cloud, and for that matter, where is the cloud?Join us on a journey from the very first iterations of the internet that we know and (sometimes) love, all the way through thorny issues of data collection and storage (weren't we all fooled by the 'ten years on' social media trend, even as we rely on cloud-stored photos of cats to cheer us up?) and discover the mysterious place where The Cloud ominously hovers.

Hodder & Stoughton What the F*ck is 5G?

Book SynopsisWhat the f*ck is 5G, and how does it even work? The world loves 4G phones, tablets and other gizmos and we take the tech for granted...but when that 4 grew up into the next-gen 5, it seems everyone perked up and started caring about phone networking tech. Journalists journaled, politicians, er, politicked, and tin-foil hat wearers reached for the extra-thick reinforced foil. Why all this fuss? Believe it or not, 5G could change the way you live. Because though it seems like smartphones are only good for tiktok and texting, 5G has the power to revolutionise how we interact with public spaces - from concerts and gigs to coffee shops, paving the way for foundational tech like virtual and augmented reality. This book will explain this missing radio link that will propel us into the future of self-driving cars and VR. Oh, and along the way we'll explore why 5G and coronavirus are very definitely and completely, utterly, not the same thing

Book SynopsisA foundational analysis of the co-evolution of the internet and international relations, examining resultant challenges for individuals, organizations, firms, and states. In our increasingly digital world, data flows define the international landscape as much as the flow of materials and people. How is cyberspace shaping international relations, and how are international relations shaping cyberspace? In this book, Nazli Choucri and David D. Clark offer a foundational analysis of the co-evolution of cyberspace (with the internet as its core) and international relations, examining resultant challenges for individuals, organizations, and states. The authors examine the pervasiveness of power and politics in the digital realm, finding that the internet is evolving much faster than the tools for regulating it. This creates a “co-evolution dilemma”—a new reality in which digital interactions have enabled weaker actors to influence or threaten stronger actors,

The stability of the economy, democracy, and the public sphere are wholly dependent on the stability and security of the internet. Revelations about election hacking, facial recognition technology, and government surveillance have gotten the public's attention and made clear the need for scholarly research that examines internet governance both empirically and conceptually. In this volume, scholars from a range of disciplines consider research methods, theories, and conceptual approaches in the study of internet governance.

Michael Glassman begins with an overview of the history that traces the evolution of the Internet and its significance for education. He outlines the current state of research, clearly defining terms that students will need to discuss larger concepts, such as hypertext and cyberspace. The second part of the book explores the practical applications of this research, which range from the individual-oriented to the generalized, including massive open online courses (MOOCs), open educational resources, and augmented reality. Key issues that affect teachers and students today, such as Net Neutrality and Creative Commons and Open Source licenses, are explained in straightforward terms, and often-overlooked differences - for example, between course management systems and learning management systems, and beTrade Review'Educational Psychology and the Internet is a text that would be most appropriate for educational psychologists and instructors interested in how to better structure their online learning environments to achieve student success.' • Broadband: Deployment, Access and the Digital

Nova Science Publishers Inc Broadband: Deployment, Access and the Digital

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBroadband -- whether delivered via fiber, cable modem, mobile or fixed wireless, copper wire, or satellite -- is increasingly the technology underlying telecommunications services such as voice, video, and data. Chapter 1 focuses on the gaps specifically related to broadband availability and adoption. How broadband is defined and characterized in statute and in regulation can have a significant impact on federal broadband policies and how federal resources are allocated to promote broadband deployment in unserved and underserved areas as discussed in chapter 2. The move to place restrictions on the owners of the networks that comprise and provide access to the internet, to ensure equal access and nondiscriminatory treatment, is referred to as "net neutrality." While there is no single accepted definition of net neutrality most agree that any such definition should include the general principles that owners of the networks that comprise and provide access to the internet should not control how consumers lawfully use that network; and should not be able to discriminate against content provider access to that network as reported in chapters 3 and 4. The "digital divide" is a term that has been used to characterize a gap between "information haves and have-nots," or in other words, between those Americans who use or have access to telecommunications and information technologies and those who do not. Chapter 5 focuses on the one important subset of the digital divide debate which concerns high-speed internet access and advanced telecommunications services, also known as broadband. While there are many examples of rural communities with state-of-the-art telecommunications facilities, recent surveys and studies have indicated that, in general, rural areas tend to lag behind urban and suburban areas in broadband deployment. The Rural Utilities Service (RUS) at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) houses three ongoing assistance programs exclusively created and dedicated to financing broadband deployment: the Rural Broadband Access Loan and Loan Guarantee Program, the Community Connect Grant Program, and the ReConnect Program. Chapter 6 discusses each of these programs. Tribal lands are generally in remote and rugged areas and broadband access can help residents develop online businesses, access telemedicine services, and use online educational tools. However, residents of tribal lands have lower levels of broadband access than residents of non-tribal lands. Chapters 7 through 11 report on the status of broadband on tribal lands.Table of ContentsPrefaceBroadband Deployment: Status and Federal ProgramsDefining Broadband: Minimum Threshold Speeds and Broadband PolicyAccess to Broadband Networks: Net NeutralityThe Net Neutrality Debate: Access to Broadband NetworksBroadband Internet Access and the Digital Divide: Federal Assistance ProgramsBroadband Loan and Grant Programs in the USDAs Rural Utilities ServiceBroadband Internet: FCCs Data Overstate Access on Tribal LandsTribal Broadband: Few Partnerships Exist and the Rural Utilities Service Needs to Identify and Address Any Funding Barriers Tribes FaceTribal Broadband: FCCs Data Overstate Access, and Tribes Face Barriers Accessing FundingTribal Broadband: FCC Should Undertake Efforts to Better Promote Tribal Access to SpectrumTribal Broadband: Status of Deployment and Federal Funding ProgramsIndex.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Governance of Domain Names on the Internet

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisCurrently, an important aspect of the Internet is governed by a private sector, international organisation called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICAN), which manages and oversees some of the critical technical underpinnings of the Internet such as the domain name system and Internet Protocol (IP) addressing. ICANN makes its policy decisions using a multistakeholder model of governance, whereby a "bottom-up" collaborative process is open to all constituencies of Internet stakeholders. This book examines the issues of internet governance and domain name system protocol, with a focus on how other aspects of the Internet may be governed in the future, especially in such areas as intellectual property, privacy, law enforcement, Internet free speech, and cybersecurity. Looking forward, the institutional nature of Internet governance could have far reaching implications on important policy decisions that will likely shape the future evolution of the Internet.

Book SynopsisToday, the Internet is at a crossroads. Protecting security of consumers, businesses and the Internet infrastructure has never been more difficult. Cyber attacks on Internet commerce, vital business sectors and government agencies have grown exponentially. In the first quarter of this year, security experts were seeing almost 67,000 new malware threats on the Internet every day. This means more than 45 new viruses, worms, spy-ware and other threats were being created every minute. As these threats grow, security policy, technology and procedures need to evolve even faster to stay ahead of the threats. This book explores a new framework for addressing internet security issues for companies outside the orbit of critical infrastructure or key resources. While securing energy, financial, health and other resources remain vital, the future of innovation and the economy will depend on the success of Internet companies, and ensuring that these companies are trusted and secure is essential.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWe are living in the midst of a social, economic, and technological revolution. How we communicate, socialize, spend leisure time, and conduct business has moved onto the Internet. The Internet has in turn moved into our phones, into devices spreading around our homes and cities, and into the factories that power the industrial economy. The resulting explosion of data and discovery is changing our world. Most definitions of big data reflect the growing technological ability to capture, aggregate, and process an ever-greater volume, velocity, and variety of data. Big data will transform the way we live and work and alter the relationships between government, citizens, businesses, and consumers. This book focuses on how the public and private sectors can maximize the benefits of big data while minimizing its risks. It also identifies opportunities for big data to grow our economy, improve health and education, and make our nation safer and more energy efficient. The book continues by exploring the changing nature of privacy as computing technology has advanced and big data has come to the forefront; identifying the sources of these data, the utility of these data; the privacy challenges big data poses in a world where technologies for re-identification often outpace privacy-preserving de-identification capabilities; and where it is increasingly hard to identify privacy-sensitive information at the time of its collection.

Book Synopsis‘Witty, rigorous, and as urgent as a fire alarm’ Dorian Lynskey ‘Cooly prosecutorial’ Guardian Nobody meant for this to happen. Facebook didn’t mean to facilitate a genocide. Twitter didn’t want to be used to harass women. YouTube never planned to radicalise young men. But with billions of users, these platforms need only tweak their algorithms to generate more ‘engagement’. In so doing, they bring unrest to previously settled communities and erode our relationships. Social warming has happened gradually – as a by-product of our preposterously convenient digital existence. But the gradual deterioration of our attitudes and behaviour on- and offline – this vicious cycle of anger and outrage – is real. And it can be corrected. Here’s how.Trade Review‘Social media was meant to bring us closer together. Instead, it tore us apart. Charles Arthur has written the definitive account of how arrogance and greed got us into this mess, and how we might get out of it. Witty, rigorous, and as urgent as a fire alarm.’ -- Dorian Lynskey‘A guide to how the apps we use every day are hacking our politics, our society, and even who we are. It reads like science fiction, except he’s describing our world – right now.’ -- Ian Dunt‘Coolly prosecutorial’ * Guardian *‘A compelling account of how a handful of social media platforms came to dominate society and how to minimise the damage they cause, because “We can’t uninvent them”.’ * Mirror *‘The rapidity with which social media has come to dominate communications in this country – in less than two decades – has been breathtaking… Arthur helps bring the whole complex issue into greater focus here. 20 in stock

Book SynopsisTowards a Digital Renaissance traces the excitement and optimism of the early internet, the outsider cyberpunk ethic and open access. But it also monitors the more complex but ultimately more commercialised online world of today, a world dominated by corporate business in which many feel that surveillance has become overwhelming. Jeremy Silver's involvement in various start-ups, both as CEO and investor, led to his leadership of Digital Catapult. Towards a Digital Renaissance examines the interplay between state and private financing in the digital sector. It also argues for the internet's potential to transition from a 'medieval' world of the GAFA big four (Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple), closed and walled up like medieval city states, to a 'digital renaissance' based on the free exchange of ideas and an enabling metaverse made up of virtual reality and artificial intelligence that deepens our experience of reality rather than restricting or monitoring it.Trade ReviewFor the past decade, the hype surrounding VR and AR technology has waxed and waned, but Jeremy Silver has been constant, a force of nature in this space. Some people just talk about technology, but Jeremy is in the trenches, and deeply understands everything ranging from how to fund a start-up to how to troubleshoot hardware. This book brilliantly tells a story about the metaverse growing up, and how Jeremy helped along the way. * Jeremy Bailenson, founding director at Stanford University’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab *
