  • Cambridge University Press The Distributive Politics of Environmental Protection in Latin America and the Caribbean

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe study of environmental politics in Latin America and the Caribbean expands as conflicts stemming from the deterioration of the natural world increase. Yet this scholarship has not generated a broad research agenda similar to the ones that emerged around other key political phenomena. This Element seeks to address the lack of a comprehensive research agenda in Latin American and Caribbean environmental politics and helps integrate the existing, disparate literatures. Drawing from distributive politics, this Element asks who benefits from the appropriation and pollution of the environment, who pays the costs of climate change and environmental degradation, and who gains from the allocation of state protections.Table of Contents1. Introduction; 2. The social mobilization perspective in Latin America and the Caribbean; 3. The state perspective in Latin America and the Caribbean; 4. A new distributive research agenda for Latin American and Caribbean environmental politics; Bibliography.

  • Cambridge University Press The MicroSociology of Peace and Conflict

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDemonstrates how micro-interaction between people shapes larger patterns of peace and conflict. This book features chapters on the methods of micro-sociology (including Video Data Analysis) as well as analytical chapters on violence, nonviolence, conflict transformation, peace talks and international meetings. This title is Open Access.Trade Review'Isabel Bramsen has more first-hand knowledge than almost anyone of uprisings, civil wars, and the practical business of peace-making. She also provides the most advanced version of interaction ritual theory, synthesized with a general theory of micro-sociology, and puts it to work explaining the flow of events along the spectrum of war and peace. Above all, she explains when and how people acquire social agency, the power to shape the turning points of history.' Randall Collins, Author of Explosive Conflict: Time-Dynamics of Violence'This is a wonderful comparative exploration of the power of micro-dynamics in conflict-affected contexts. It helps us better understand the stickiness of conflict, but also how individuals, communities and elites can navigate their way through it. Bramsen convincingly makes the case that empathy and human social interactions matter. This is a career-defining book and is highly recommended.' Roger Mac Ginty, Professor, School of Government and International Affairs, Durham University'In this remarkable book, Bramsen theorizes and empirically documents the political effects of microsociality in peace processes and world politics writ large. Her useful methodological innovations (especially video data analysis) and rich theoretical insights about the rhythm and script of everyday interaction open promising research avenues in international practice theory, peace and conflict studies, and beyond. Perhaps counterintuitively for some, the book shows that not only friendly but also conflictual interaction can be part of peace!' Vincent Pouliot, James McGill Professor, Department of Political Science, McGill University'Isabel Bramsen eloquently weaves together traditional Peace and Conflict Research theories with recent thinking on corporeality, rhythm of interaction and emotional exchange. Her groundbreaking work not only develops a highly innovative analytical framework for studying conflict transformation but also offers a fascinating empirical analysis of how corporeal interactions work and develop in peace and conflict.' Tarja Väyrynen, Professor, Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI) and Vice-chair, Research Council for Culture and SocietyTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. The theory of micro-sociology; 2. The methods and methodology of micro-sociology; 3. The micro-sociology of violence; 4. The micro-sociology of nonviolent resistance; 5. The micro-sociology conflict transformation; 6. The micro-sociology of peace talks; 7. The micro-sociology of international meetings; Conclusion.

  • Cambridge University Press International Law

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA landmark publication in the teaching of international law from one of the world's leading international lawyers. This refreshingly clear, concise textbook conveys the dynamics of international law through four questions: Where does it come from? To whom does it apply? How does it resolve conflict? What does it say?Trade Review'No-one is better at explaining the nuance of international law while keeping an eye squarely on the details than Jan Klabbers. This new edition of his groundbreaking textbook is a terrific update to an essential book. The book charts the theories and assumptions that make up the international legal system while telling engaging stories about the histories and cases that constitute its practice. The combination is readable, informative, and unmatched among international law textbooks.' Ian Hurd, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Weinberg College Center for International and Area Studies, Northwestern University'The new edition of this textbook offers well-organised and updated reading material, always with the author's signature combination of systemic rigour and political sensibility, liveliness and academic thoroughness. The textbook is highly recommended for an intelligent and contextualised introduction to international law.' Catherine Brölmann, Associate Professor of international law, Department of International Law, University of Amsterdam'Refreshing and argumentative, but also clear and concise - this textbook is a must for those wanting to combine the acquisition of knowledge with a deeper appreciation of the disagreements and controversies that abound in International Law.' • Cambridge University Press Formal Models of Crisis Bargaining

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFormal Models of Crisis Bargaining offers a groundbreaking guide to modern crisis bargaining theory and is essential reading both for advanced undergraduates (providing comprehensive coverage of the field for the first time) and graduates and researchers (as a vital learning tool for those wishing to conduct original research).Trade Review'Textbook, yes, but at the same time a creative, well organized, and clearly written synthesis and presentation of around 30 years of thinking about paths into armed conflict in terms of bargaining models. Spaniel's book pulls this part of the field together in a highly useful way, adding valuable clarifications and insights throughout. Excellent both as an efficient introduction and a jumping off point for next steps.' James Fearon, Stanford University, California'In the face of the obvious cost, in terms of both economic loss and human suffering, the fact that war occurs at all is puzzling. For the last 20 years, scholars of international relations have developed a useful and rigorous framework for understanding the factors that prevent countries from reaching peaceful settlements to their disputes. In Formal Models of Crisis Bargaining: Applications in the Politics of Conflict, Spaniel skillfully elucidates the contemporary scholarly understanding of war's origins in a remarkably accessible manner. He adeptly introduces the reader to modern strategic analysis of conflict, employing clear prose and presenting numerous real-world applications. Everyone from undergraduate political science majors to research scholars will find value in this ambitious and necessary book.' Kristopher W. Ramsay, Princeton University, New Jersey'Spaniel's textbook is truly impressive, covering a wide range of technical material with both accessibility and depth and giving structure to a rapidly growing modeling enterprise at the center of the modern theory of war. It'll be a staple of my graduate teaching from here on.' Scott Wolford, University of Texas, Austin'For almost three decades, scholars have been studying conflict and violence using the verbal and mathematical language of bargaining without a guide. With deep knowledge of this work, Spaniel standardizes diverse models and presents a compelling and accessible story as to how to understand war and peace. This will be an essential reference for all students of conflict.' Emily Ritter, Vanderbilt University, Tennessee'The book is an outstanding treatment of the formal literature on international conflict that has developed in the last three decades. The chapters are clear and concise, and cover a broad range of important topics, including commitment problems, the role of uncertainty, costly signalling and cheap talk, and mechanism design. Readers will gain valuable insight into the role of formal models in understanding crisis bargaining and war.' Mark Fey, University of Rochester, New YorkTable of Contents1. Introduction: why war? Part I. Complete Information Models: 2. War's inefficiency puzzle; 3. Power and commitment problems; 4. Preventive war and bargaining over power; 5. Hidden commitment problems; Part II. Incomplete Information Models: 6. Uncertainty over costs; 7. Uncertainty over power; 8. Cheap talk and incentives to misrepresent; 9. Military mobilizations and costly signals; 10. Manipulating the peace premium; 11. Mechanism design; 12. Fighting and learning; Part III. Appendices: 13. Discounting; 14. Derivatives of implicit functions; 15. Mechanism design primer.

  • Cambridge University Press Global Policymaking

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBy unpacking the practices and the values that have prevailed in three recent UN initiatives, this book demonstrates how global policymaking forms a patchwork pervaded by improvisation and social conflict. The book will appeal to students and scholars of global governance, international organizations and global policy studies.Trade Review'In this superb book, the dynamic and fluid character of global policymaking is captured by treating global governance as an 'unscripted process' – one that is defined by seemingly undirected and impromptu practices of bricolage. Pouliot and Thérien take the UN as one important site of global policy processes to provide a rich and conceptually sophisticated illustration of their 'practice approach' to the analysis of global governance. This approach brings to the fore the inclusionary as well as exclusionary 'politics' and value debates behind the 'patchwork' of global policymaking.' Diane Stone, Chair of Global Policy, School of Transnational Governance, EUI'This ambitious and innovative book aims to refocus the study of global governance on the process of global policymaking. Far from technical problem-solving, this is a messy, deeply political process, characterized by improvisation, recombination, and ambiguous compromise, and shaped by inescapable value cleavages and governance practices that include or exclude particular actors and interests. The book also offers a valuable 'how-to' guide to analyzing governance practices and value conflicts.' Kenneth W. Abbott, Jack E. Brown Chair in Law Emeritus, Arizona State University'Vincent Pouliot and Jean-Philippe Thérien show convincingly that global policymaking can be understood not as functional responses to global problems but as the outcome of struggles about transboundary practices and universal values. Seeing global governance as a bricolage of global policymaking allows a better understanding of the intricate relationship of common goods justifications and power relations. Global Policymaking is one of the most important books on global governance.' Michael Zürn, Director at the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB), and Professor, Freie Universität BerlinTable of ContentsIntroduction: the politics of global governance; 1. Global policymaking: from public goods to bricolage; 2. The making of global policies: analytical framework and methodology; 3. The sustainable development goals: planning without a blueprint; 4. The Human Rights Council: institution-building by doing; 5. The protection of civilians: policymaking by fits and starts; 6. Key Trends in the Making of Global Policies: A Comparative Synthesis; Conclusion: grasping the patchwork of global governance.

Book SynopsisSince the end of World War II, the United States has maintained a unique system of partnerships and alliances, known as the US world order. Within this order, it has sought both compliance from, and consensus with, its partners. Sometimes it has achieved both, sometimes one but not the other, and sometimes neither. What accounts for this variation in hegemonic leadership? Giacomo Chiozza suggests that the answer depends on the domestic political institutions that structure US relations with the incumbent leaders in the partner nations. Domestic political institutions that foster political successors and allow for regular and flexible channels of leadership turnover make it easier for the US to sustain friendly relations. However, unexpectedly, institutions that allow for regular and flexible channels of leadership turnover also create domestic political incentives that foster the attainment of better governance and more respect of human rights.

  • Cambridge University Press East Asian International Relations

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThrough the outline of a coherent theoretical foundation for understanding East Asian international relations, this textbook offers a fresh, analytical approach, including applications of evolutionary theory that differ from and contextualize the prevailing theories currently offered for studies of East Asia. It provides an extensive coverage of ancient world order and European imperialism preceding contemporary themes of security, economic development, money and finance, regionalism, the US-China rivalry, and democracy versus autocracy. Demonstrating systemically how facts and theories are constructed, and how these are bound by evolutionary constraints, students gain a realistic view of knowledge production and the mindset and tools to participate actively in determining which facts and theories are more acceptable than alternatives. Feature boxes, discussion questions, exercises, and recommended readings are incorporated into each chapter to encourage active learning. A vital new resource for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in political science, international relations, and Asian studies.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe EU prides itself on having created a legal system that puts the individual at its centre. Individuals benefit from a broad range of fundamental rights that protect them against EU power. However, to vindicate their rights against the EU, they have to make use of a remedies system as old as the EU itself. Unsurprisingly, with EU power growing and evolving, it also is increasingly difficult to challenge. This book critically examines the EU''s remedies system from a fundamental rights perspective, focusing on the EU''s activities outside the realm of lawmaking. It maps the existing mechanisms private parties can avail themselves of to enforce their fundamental rights against the EU and discovers their unused potential. In doing so, it offers an important synthesis of the state of play and directions for reform in areas where the EU falls short of its promise to provide a ''complete system of remedies''. This title is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core.
