Verlag Peter Lang The EU's Experience in Integration: A Model for

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe thirteen ASEAN+3 countries are inching forward toward closer economic cooperation. Can the European Union serve as a model for this Asian interregional integration process? Although there are common cultural threads running through all ASEAN+3 countries, these countries have not so far envisaged themselves forming a political and supra-national legal community similar to the EU. Nevertheless, the EU as innovator and forerunner offers Asia an unparalleled road map to further regional integration. Where are the boundaries of the European Model? What form will Asian economic cooperation take? Asian and European scholars discussed these and other pressing questions on the invitation of the EU-China European Studies Centres Programme (ESCP) at a conference entitled The EU's Experience in Integration A Model for ASEAN+3? held in Shanghai in January 2006. Their findings are presented in this collection of fifteen papers on politics, economics and history of the two regions.

  • Financialization of the economy and income

De Gruyter Financialization of the economy and income

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIncome inequality is a serious problem confronting not only the developed world but also developing countries. Recently, financialization has been one of the culprits identified in literature as one of the cause of income inequality. This book offers the only detailed presentation of the how financialization aided the spread of income inequality in Organization of Islamic Cooperation, OIC countries. Finance has taking a center stage in the affairs of most developing economies, surpassing the real sector of the economy. The result is the creation of an indebted society in which people are comfortable with financing their financial needs through credit. This creates a debt laden society that is trapped in the cycle of debt. This book represents a comprehensive and indispensable source for students, practitioners and the general public at large. It presents data which shows the buildup of debt and the rising income inequality in Muslim countries. It includes discussion of the rise in rentier income, financialization of everyday life, decline in physical capital accumulation and deregulation of the financial sector. The book therefore, proffers solutions on how Muslim countries can come out of the present economic problem facing them. The promotion and adoption of Islamic principles, which promotes risk sharing based contracts as against debt based transaction is the way to go. When financial contracts are based on the principles of risk sharing, any gains from economic activities get to be shared equitably. Hence, not only capital owners get to enjoy the benefit from the income derived from investments, but rather, all parties that partake in the contract. Distinguished by its clarity and readability as it is written in a very easy to understand language, it is an important reference work for any concerned individual interested on the recent causes of income inequality in Muslim World.

  • The Institutional Foundations of the Digital

De Gruyter The Institutional Foundations of the Digital

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis The development of the Digital Economy has been a landmark breakthrough for economic systems in the 21st century, as it opens up opportunities for the full-scale implementation of new digital technologies and the optimization of economic activities. While the conceptual essence and specific features of the digital economy are described in detail in the existing literature, the practical foundations of its formation are poorly studied. In this book, the digital economy is studied from the perspective of neo-institutional economic theory. This allows for the tracking of the process of formation (institutionalization) of the digital economy, determining the basic institutions that are necessary for its formation and that exist in modern economic practice, and analyzing scenarios for the future development of the digital economy in the 21st century.

Book SynopsisAs environmental social governance (ESG) increasingly shapes the academic discourse in the European Union, Solveig Gasche provides a conceptual analysis of responsible trading in raw materials. Because the governance concept of responsible trading considers human rights and environmental standards, she defines the decisive determinants of trade in raw materials by considering the main historic, economic and regulative approaches. Illustrating and analysing the international and the German approach to implementing good guidance, strategies and governance, she further deals with the issues of conflict minerals and compliance, supply chain due diligence, corporate social responsibility, and business ethics. Corporate liability is given particular emphasis, taking into account options of contract design, transparency, and reporting as well as aspects of due diligence.

  • ECOWAS Law

Springer International Publishing AG ECOWAS Law

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book analyses the emerging jurisprudence of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and seamlessly knits together all the disparate texts, policies and judicial decisions into a single, coherent resource. The work is deliberately crafted to address the lack of a comprehensive resource on the subject, and guide lawyers, policy-makers, Community citizens, researchers, students and civil society organisations through the labyrinth of the Community's laws and policies. From a socio-legal perspective, it unearths political, socio-economic and legal structures that impinge on the integration cause on the one hand, and dilute the efficacy of the Community legal regime on the other hand. Also, it exposes contemporary terrorism and conflict in West Africa and the legal interventions that the Community has adopted to respond to these challenges. In sequence, it traces and expounds the legal development of the Community norms with respect to sources of law, human rights, supra-nationalism and laws of the member states, reference procedure, action for damages, freedom of movement, discrimination and competition policy. The book particularly evaluates the extent of the human rights jurisdiction of the Community Court of Justice, as well as jurisdictional limitations to the protection of Community rights either at national or Community level. Also, it sheds light on the jurisdictional chasm existing between Community law and member states' national laws, and offers proven constitutional, legislative and judicial solutions to plug the gap. It explains vividly the common market, free movement of goods and the impact of Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) on the entire ECOWAS free trade policy. In all these analyses, evaluation and examination of norms and policies, the work draws on the European Union's rich case law on similar points to explain recondite issues of law which may arise or have arisen from the application of any of the ECOWAS texts.Table of ContentsEstablishment of ECOWAS.- Sources of ECOWAS law.- Institutions of the Community.- Terrorism, conflicts and legal interventions.- Human rights and other principles.- ECOWAS law and national laws.- Reference for interpretation.- Actions for damages and on legality.- Selected Forum and Community staff actions.- Free movement of persons and right of residence.- Right of establishment (services) and free movement of capital.- Free movement of goods.- Discrimination.- Competition policy.

  • Managing Country Risk in an Age of Globalization:

Springer International Publishing AG Managing Country Risk in an Age of Globalization:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides an up-to-date guide to managing Country Risk. It tackles its various and interlinked dimensions including sovereign risk, socio-political risk, and macroeconomic risk for foreign investors, creditors, and domestic residents. It shows how they are accentuated in the global economy together with new risks such as terrorism, systemic risk, environmental risk, and the rising trend of global volatility and contagion. The book also assesses the limited usefulness of traditional yardsticks of Country Risk, such as ratings and rankings, which at best reflect the market consensus without predictive value and at worst amplify risk aversion and generate crisis contamination. This book goes further than comparing a wide range of risk management methods in that it provides operational and forward-looking warning signs of Country Risk. The combination of the authors’ academic and market-based backgrounds makes the book a useful tool for scholars, analysts, and practitioners. Trade Review“This book succeeds better than any other I know in being a comprehensive and practical guide to the economics of country risk analysis. Springer International Publishing AG Introduction to the Eurasian Economic Union

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which includes Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, and Armenia, is a new but substantial regional organization. Significant achievements include a common external customs tariff, a customs union and a common labour market: a well-developed institutional environment has emerged to support and advance these processes, ranging from the Eurasian Economic Commission and the EAEU Court to the Eurasian Development Bank and the Eurasian Fund for Stabilization and Development. This major integration achievement also has several drawbacks and ‘stumbling stones’—some due to Russia’s dominant position, some due to the authoritarian nature of political regimes, and some due to dependence on oil and gas exports. This book presents a detailed qualitative and quantitative assessment of the Eurasian Economic Union, including the history of Eurasian integration, the macroeconomy of EAEU member states, an assessment of trade and investment links, a descriptive analysis of the EAEU Treaty, an analysis of Eurasian institutions, the sociology of integration, the EAEU’s emerging foreign economic policy, relations with the EU and China, the EAEU’s position on One Belt One Road policies, and its mid-term policy agenda. This primer text will be of interest and value for students, academics and practitioners working in economic policy and business communities and interested in the history and development of the Eurasian Economic Union.Table of ContentsIntroductionChapter 1. • Trade and Receivables Finance: A Practical Guide

Springer International Publishing AG Trade and Receivables Finance: A Practical Guide

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTrade and Receivable Finance provides the definitive practical guide to the evaluation and mitigation of risk and the financing of international trade. This authoritative manual is built upon more than 42 years of experience in the trade and receivables finance market and carries the endorsement of The London Institute of Banking and Finance. The contents are comprehensive incorporating clause examples, specimen documents, financier checklists and diagrams. The traditional method of commercial lending assessment places primary importance on the ability of the borrower to repay the financier. However, this form of evaluation often results in insufficient credit appetite to release the required level of financial support for a company involved in cross border trade. When a trade-related proposition is properly evaluated so that the transactional risks are fully understood and mitigated to an acceptable level, and the source of repayment is identifiable and considered reliable, a well-structured trade and receivables finance facility reduces the risk of default when compared to conventional lending products and can generate additional credit appetite. This book will become a constant ‘go-to’ companion for transaction banking teams, bank relationship managers, specialist client-facing trade and invoice finance specialists, middle and back office trade advisory personnel, credit analysts, alternative market financiers, export development agencies and credit insurers. The techniques described in this book are applied to an extensive range of international trade scenarios inThe Trade and Receivables Finance Companion: A Collection of Case Studies and Solutions (Palgrave, 2020).Table of Contents1 IntroductionPart I Trade2 Trade Credit3 The Trade Cycle4 Commercial Terms5 Transport and ControlPart II Credit Risk6 Credit Risk7 Evaluating the Client8 Trade Loans9 SecurityPart III Trade Products10 Collections11 Bank Aval12 Letters of Credit13 Special Types of Letters of Credit14 Standby Letters of Credit15 Demand Bank GuaranteesPart IV The GoodsPart IV The Goods 33116 Nature of Goods17 Payables Finance18 Warehouse FinancePart V The Receivable19 Sales Invoice and Debt Instruments20 Evaluating the End-Buyer21 Credit Insurance22 Performance Risk23 Receivables Finance24 Invoice FinancePart VI The Proposition25 The Credit Facility Application

Springer International Publishing AG Amsterdam's Sephardic Merchants and the Atlantic

Book SynopsisThis book surveys the role of Amsterdam’s Sephardic merchants in the westward expansion of sugar production and trade in the seventeenth-century Atlantic. It offers an historical-geographic perspective, linking Amsterdam as an emerging staple market to a network of merchants of the “Portuguese Nation,” conducting trade from the Iberian Peninsula and Brazil. Examining the “Myth of the Dutch,” the “Sephardic Moment,” and the impact of the British Navigation Acts, Yda Schreuder focuses attention on Barbados and Jamaica and demonstrates how Amsterdam remained Europe’s primary sugar refining center through most of the seventeenth century and how Sephardic merchants played a significant role in sustaining the sugar trade.Trade Review“This book is clearly a work of love. … It is a well-written, well-documented overview of trade, trade networks, and the intersection of geopolitics during a dynamic century during which the foundations of empire were being laid. … this volume is a very good overview of the different strands at play during this formative time in European colonialism.” (Jessica Vance Roitman, Studia Rosenthaliana, Vol. 47 (1), 2021)Table of Contents1.

  • Thinking Strategically About Anti-Corruption

Peter Lang AG Thinking Strategically About Anti-Corruption

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn recent years controlling corruption has taken on an increasingly important role in social consciousness, policy debate and reform initiatives. Domestic measures in many countries are reshaping the legal and institutional environment in which government operate, as are recent multilateral initiatives by governments, private organizations and nonprofits alike. There are many possible reform measures that may be undertaken, which are discussed and developed here. Some reform measures are purely managerial, others are administrative, legal, social or political in nature. Corrupt exchanges must be understood within the broader perspective of reciprocal rewards and sanctions, often firmly entrenched with regular (legal), social and economic transactions. Curbing corruption is, therefore, an arduous task, requiring a multi-pronged approach and an understanding of the nature and mechanisms of exchange. There is no simple road map to successfully overcoming corruption and it is often difficult to distinguish between poor results induced by either nonfeasance (shirking), corruption, maladministration or plain erroneous decisions. To wit, as a general principal however, what is useful to improve governmental performance is useful to mitigate corruption.

Book SynopsisTraditional exchange rate modeling is in crisis. Fundamentals cannot explain exchange rates. Models using solely macro variables are bound to fail empirically, since they do not capture what is happening on foreign exchange markets. The question about the inner life of these markets arises. Since the middle of the 1990s, there is now an empirically motivated approach to exchange rates, based on the analysis of order flows. Foreign exchange market microstructure addresses the trading process and corresponding aspects of foreign exchange dealing. Analyses of order flows have become a promising field of research as cumulated flows are closely related to exchange rate movements. This investigation is made up of four related studies in the spirit of this new microstructure approach. It contributes to the existing literature by extending our knowledge of microstructure effects in the decision-making of foreign exchange dealers.

Peter Lang AG Joining the WTO: The Impact of Trade, Competition

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIt took 15 years of negotiations to integrate China into the World Trade Organization. This book argues that redistributive conflicts between China and old WTO members delayed the accession negotiations and fostered protectionist resentments against China as a new member. An explorative case study illustrates the emergence of third-market competition as a motive for members not to enlarge the organization since it contests the profits of their exporting industries. The econometric analysis of industry-specific antidumping measures on imports from China reveals that members' import-competing industries also seek protection. As a result, one reason why China was not warmly welcomed to the WTO by a heterogeneous group of countries is, ironically, its trading power.

Book SynopsisRegional disparities and spatial clustering are ubiquitous in today’s world. This study contributes with empirical findings on the distribution of European research and patenting activity since the 1980s at the regional level. Besides a general theoretical part, it offers a quantitative clustering analysis, which makes use of EPO patent applications and a harmonized regional and technological classification. Moreover, the pan-European study incorporates a structural analysis of inter-regional co-patenting networks at the regional and technological level that covers the 1990s and 2000s. Finally, European regional income and growth disparities are addressed by placing emphasis on the spatial distribution of research activity and the regional settlement structure.Table of ContentsContents: Research clustering analysis – Inventorship clustering analysis – Analysis of spatial concentration of technology fields in Europe – Calculation of regional research cluster indices – Analysis of European R&D networks – Calculation of EPO co-patenting linkages – Analysis of European regional growth disparities – Analysis of regional divergence.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe introduction of Integrated Reporting (IR) is supposed to tackle shortcomings of corporate reporting that have been criticized for decades. The new reporting format intends to improve the understandability of corporate reports and broaden their often merely financial and backward-looking perspective. This study investigates the usefulness of IR for investors. A conceptual analysis provides an in-depth examination of the IIRC’s International Framework, the basis to prepare integrated reports. An empirical analysis examines the presence of IR in existing reports from South Africa and the USA, before testing potential consequences for the capital market. The findings have implications not only for investors, but also for the reporting firms, regulators and academics.Table of ContentsThe Integrated Reporting Approach – Corporate reporting in South Africa and the USA – Integrated Reporting in practice – Capital market consequences of Integrated Reporting
