Then get to work'' The Guardian''It ought to be required reading for every civil servant, regulator and politician in the UK and elsewhere'' Literary ReviewFinancial malpractice, we''re told, is an aberration: the actions of a few bad apples deviating from the norms of a market-governed process and gaming the system. In Sabotage, political scientists Anastasia Nesvetailova and Ronen Palan blow this fiction apart, showing that sabotage is not an anomaly, but part of the business model of finance - and always has been.Abusive lending practices, misleading investors, manipulating prices, deliberately falsifying figures, cheating, obstruction and taking advantage of ''the dumbest person in the room'' - they''re actually the main source of profitability in finance, and the surest Trade ReviewSabotage is a great book. Sabotage deserves high praise for fulfilling the most valuable injunction of all when it comes to catastrophic crises with terrible human costs: never forget. -- Felix Martin * New Statesman *Nesvetailova and Palan trace how financiers have corrupted the purpose of the corporation, undermined our tax authorities, foxed the regulators, evaded the forces of law and order, and generally rigged markets in their favour. Oxford University Press The KnowledgeCreating Company How Japanese Companies Create the Dynamics of Innovation
Book SynopsisHow has Japan become a major economic power, a world leader in the automotive and electronics industries? What is the secret of their success? The consensus has been that, though the Japanese are not particularly innovative, they are exceptionally skilful at imitation, at improving products that already exist. But now two leading Japanese business experts, Ikujiro Nonaka and Hiro Takeuchi, turn this conventional wisdom on its head: Japanese firms are successful, they contend, precisely because they are innovative, because they create new knowledge and use it to produce successful products and technologies.Examining case studies drawn from such firms as Honda, Canon, Matsushita, NEC, 3M, GE, and the U.S. Marines, this book reveals how Japanese companies translate tacit to explicit knowledge and use it to produce new processes, products, and services.Trade ReviewWhen the authors detail specific examples of knowledge creation, the reader's interest awakens. * The Wall Street Journal *Nonaka and Tekuchi demonstrate for the reader how it is possible to transfer tacit knowledge into explicit, which in turn is used to create new knowledge. * Knowledge Management, June 2000 *Nonaka is indispensable. * Financial Times *Nonaka and Takeuchi have written an academic study that summarises their theories and presents case studies illustrative to a western audience ... a guide to practitioners, based on materials for workshops and consultancy by the authors. * Financial Times *Provides a perceptive and very relevant analysis of how Japanese companies go about creating new knowledge organizationally ... Oxford University Press Inc Justice and International Order East and West
Book SynopsisTrade ReviewReaders leave this text with a better grasp on the causes of current international differences between China and the West and with some practical means toward future cooperative flourishing. * D. P. Prianti, CHOICE *This is a big book. Ned Lebow and Feng Zhang collaborate in a kind of cultural hermeneutics to recover from both the classical Western and Chinese canons the root meaning of their respective conceptions of justice, and then explore how these different meanings play out in the international relations of the modern state system. While importantly different, what is shared between them is that justice for both seems to be a variable calculus of fairness and equality. * Roger T. Ames, Peking University *Every political order claims some notion of justice. Comparing Chinese and Western conceptions of justice, ancient and modern, Lebow and Zhang contends that East-West's overlapping conceptions of justice may just provide a foundation for forestalling a possible conflict and building a more inclusive global order. A tour de force and an enlightening read for anyone who cares about our future. * Shiping Tang, Fudan distinguished professor, Fudan University, Shanghai, author of The Social Evolution of International Politics and The Institutional Foundation of Economic Development *Lebow and Zhang make a compelling argument for the importance of smaller states and their inhabitants' perceptions of justice in international orders. Testing the effects of those perceptions on states' and individuals' behaviours would be a tremendous addition to their fascinating work. The book is an eclectic work of political theory, IR and foreign policy analysis, relevant to anyone interested in the processes and bases of international order. * International Affairs *Table of ContentsIntroduction Part I 2 Principles of Justice in the West 3 Justice in Confucianism 4 Justice in Mohism, Legalism, Daoism 5 Comparing East and West Part 2 6 International "Order" 7 Justice and Order Between America and China 8 Reimagining World Order Conclusion 9 Smart Power and Great Learning Index

Oxford University Press Inc Deploying Feminism
Book SynopsisA detailed account, based on fieldwork and interviews, of how Women, Peace and Security norms are militarized and put at the service of operational effectiveness.International organizations and governments want to increase women''s participation in military operations and peacebuilding. Gender equality is increasingly seen as the antidote to conflict, a key factor in achieving stability. While feminist activism inspired the emergence of these norms on gender and conflict, they were institutionalized through the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda, with the military at the forefront of those changes. In Deploying Feminism, Stéfanie von Hlatky tells the story of how the military has been delegated authority to advance gender equality as part of their activities, while simultaneously tackling increasingly complex threats. Drawing upon fieldwork and interviews, she illustrates how NATO, the world''s foremost alliance, has even embedded these ideas in the planning and execution of its miTrade ReviewA timely and important contribution that bridges long standing gaps between feminist theory, strategic studies, and civil-military analysis. Von Hlatky's expert and careful analysis, particularly her brilliant development of the concept of 'norm distortion,' helps address a question that has plagued feminists for the past decade: Why and how has institutional adoption of feminist concepts failed to translate into radical and transformative agendas? Through her international case studies, and clear expertise of NATO operations, the WPS agenda, feminist theory, and foreign policy, von Hlatky draws out unique conclusions about the process through which feminist ideals can be filtered, diluted, and militarized in military organizations, while at the same time, militaries 'deploying' this rhetoric remain largely unchanged. * Megan MacKenzie, Simon Fraser University *In Deploying Feminism, Dr. Von Hlatky looks at what happens when the Women, Peace and Security agenda is converted into NATO military operations, asking how gender norms have changed NATO operations, but also what gets lost in translation when those norms meet military culture. She delivers an engaging first-person account through interviews with NATO commanders, soldiers and officials in Kosovo, the Baltics, Iraq and Brussels. The book is an important contribution for practitioners and scholars alike: it draws important lessons on how militaries and international peace missions can do a better job on gender and offers a thoughtful take on how the international Women, Peace and Security agenda has been transformed. * Kerry Buck, Former Canadian Ambassador to NATO *Table of ContentsPreface Acronyms Tables and Figures Chapter 1: Introduction Chapter 2: Gender Wars and Gender in War Chapter 3: Deploying Feminism in NATO Operations Chapter 4: Securing the Environment in Kosovo Chapter 5: Deterring in the Baltics Chapter 6: Advising and Assisting in Iraq Chapter 7: Conclusion Appendix Bibliography Index

Oxford University Press Global Production Networks
Book SynopsisAccelerating processes of economic globalization have fundamentally reshaped the organization of the global economy towards much greater integration and functional interdependence through cross-border economic activity. In this interconnected world system, a new form of economic organization has emerged: Global Production Networks (GPNs). This brings together a wide array of economic actors, most notably capitalist firms, state institutions, labour unions, consumers and non-government organizations, in the transnational production of economic value. National and sub-national economic development in this highly interdependent global economy can no longer be conceived of, and understood within, the distinct territorial boundaries of individual countries and regions. Instead, global production networks are organizational platforms through which actors in these different national or regional economies compete and cooperate for a larger share of the creation, transformation, and capture of Trade ReviewCoe and Yeungs Global Production Networks is a significant addition to the diverse and rapidly growing literature on international economic development . . . The book contains numerous insights and hypotheses that can guide future empirical research, and it is likely to both sharpen theoretical debates and offer grounds for constructive dialogue among the many scholars who look at economic development through the lens of inter-firm production networks. * Gary Gereffi, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center on Globalization, Governance & Competitiveness, Duke University *This book provides an important contribution to analysis of the growing complexity of global production networks. It is published at a key juncture given rapid expansion of consumer end-markets within the global South. Its exploration of the implications for uneven economic development is essential for assessing varied strategic options facing diverse actors in the contemporary global economy. * Stephanie Barrientos, Professor of Global Development, University of Manchester *This book is a major and original contribution to the study of the global economy, and unique in the ways in which it provide a rigorous conceptual map of the dynamic and geographical complexities of the current global economy. It is, by far, the fullest and most significant book on global production networks to date. It is a major achievement and will be an important work in economic geography and economic sociology. * John Pickles, Earl N. Phillips Distinguished Professor of International Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 20/04/15 *Given the absence of a book-length treatment of GPN's by the extant literature, the value-add offered by Coe and Yeung in terms of delineating unified casual explainations for the rise and persistence of GPN's is timely and noteworthy. Across its six chapters, the book is cognizant of complementary aproaches, and seeks to inform subsequent empirical exploration by attempting conceptual development of the GPN framework. Coe and Young proceed to profile the actors involved in GPN's as well as the characteristics of these networks in Chapter 2. This is a key strength of the book, where the role of actors ex-firms such as the state, international organisations, and intermediaries are acknowledged and scrutinised for their impact on overall firm activity. Coe and Yeung have done an excellent job in illuminating a fundamental puzzle involving the evolution of production in the world economy, even as they develop a coherent theory of GPN's.Table of Contents1. Oxford University Press Creating Knowledge over Distance
Book SynopsisCreating Knowledge over Distance shows that economic knowledge creation fundamentally depends on, benefits from, and is structured by temporary geographical proximity - that is, by economic actors meeting in person or interacting in a co-present context to discuss business opportunities, problems and solutions are face to face. During the Covid-19 pandemic, personal meetings often had to be reduced or were replaced by virtual meetings, leading many observers to assume a fundamental reconfiguration of economic life in the future as face-to-face interaction may be substituted by virtual interaction through the use of new information and communication technologies. While communication patterns certainly changed during this period, this book demonstrates that the face-to-face meetings the authors investigate across a sequence of 11 chapters with different knowledge-creation contexts are unlikely to be fully substituted by distant interactions - and may even become more important over time. The book develops the argument by systematically analyzing three configurations of knowledge transfers over distance: (1) international community gatherings, such as trade fairs, delegation travel, conventions and conferences, (2) mobile business practices, including intra-firm business coordination, inter-firm projects, producer-user meetings, and corporate expansions/inter-firm negotiations, as well as (3) transnational networks, related to transnational corporations and transnational migrant firms (including new transnational firms/new Argonauts and transnational family networks).

Book SynopsisFrederick Guy''s The Global Environment of Business offers a multi-dimensional analysis of the environment in which international business operates. International: How do multi-national corporations, nation states, regional trade blocs, markets, and global institutions interact to shape the international economic system? Who wins and who loses when the economy internationalizes? Is internationalization leading to a global world, or a regional one? How will efforts to curtail and adapt to climate change affect international business?Technological and historical: How has the business environment been shaped by production systems, new methods of business organization, information and communication technology, transport, and the process of technological change itself?Comparative: How do institutional differences affect national specialization and economic performance? How do the business systems of Europe differ from that of the United States, or those of East Asia from those of Latin America? Why do location and face-to-face contact matter in an age of high-speed communication and cheap long-distance transportation? Why have some countries grown so fast while others remain poor? The Global Environment of Business draws on extensive research by economists, political scientists, sociologists, geographers, and business historians. There is more theory and academic debate here than in most books on the subject, but it is presented and explained clearly, and illustrated with lots of examples.Trade ReviewThe author has done the student and the general reader a great favor by weaving together many contributions into a single highly readable book...I am hopeful that many lecturers will chose to stretch into disciplines outside their specialties to make the best use of this uniquely integrative approach. Book SynopsisAn essential collection at the intersection of globalization, production supply chains, corporate finance regulation, and economic measurement. The substantial increase in the complexity of global supply chains and other production arrangements over the past three decades has challenged some traditional measures of national income account aggregates and raised the potential for distortions in conventional calculations of GDP and productivity. This volume examines a variety of multinational business activities and assesses their impact on economic measurement. Several chapters consider how global supply chains complicate the interpretation of traditional trade statistics and how new measurement techniques can provide information about global production arrangements. Other chapters examine the role of intangible capital in global production, including the output of factoryless goods producers and the problems of measuring R&D in a globalized world. Palgrave MacMillan Us CocaGlobalization Following Soft Drinks from New York to New Guinea
Book SynopsisThis book explores globalization through a historical and anthropological study of how familiar soft drinks such as Coke and Pepsi became valued as more than mere commodities.Trade Review"Skillfully navigating the pitfalls of reading soft drinks as either a pat story of unmitigated coca-colonization on the one hand or autonomous local resistance on the other, Foster presents a persuasive case for both the openness and the constraints of the processes he traces." - Comparative Studies in Society and History "This is a great book. It is definitely worth incorporating in your teaching if you are a professor, and in your thinking if you are a human being who cares about people and our environment. Foster pulls together many strands of cultural anthropology to create a compelling story about how soft drink corporations are attempting to take over the world not just in terms of sales but also in terms of government and citizenship." - anthropologyworks.com "Neither a politically-correct polemic against corporations nor a paean to the glories of free trade, Coca-Globalization is a thoughtful look at how products can take on extraordinary meaning for human beings and how shareholders and soft drink consumers can have an impact on business decisions. - Mark Pendergrast, author of For God, Country & Coca-Cola and Uncommon Grounds "A profound, scholarly study that doggedly tracks down and records in detail the way Coca-Cola inhabits our world today. Foster s riveting presentation and analysis of Coca-Cola in Papua New Guinea is matched by his sensitivity to global issues of value, shareholder activism, and the environment. A firm foundation for a genuinely informed politics of consumption." - Daniel Miller, Professor of Material Culture, Department of Anthropology, University College London "The book is simply one of the most eloquently argued and clearly written texts on globalization that I have ever read." - Paige West, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Barnard College, Columbia University "Foster's retelling of the story of Coke asks that we not be lured into alarmist opposition to globalization simply because of the power and reach of an immense profit-driven global agent. Nor does his account prompt us to see the global relations of Coke as benign or ethically attuned to the fragility and creativity of local culture. Rather, it suggests that the sources of Coca-Cola's expansive power to affect politics, culture and material conditions can also be instruments for progressive consumer action - for the reformist political action of peoples as consumers." - Socialism and Democracy "The book brilliantly pursues [its] objectives . . . [Foster s] discussion is of such historical depth and analytic breadth that I cannot summarize it here" - American Anthropologist "Well beyond area specialism, the interest of Foster s book lies in the impressive details of his tracking of Coke along global commodity networks. Its originality lies in the sustained application of an approach to value formation that is derived from Callon et al. s (2002) notion that a product is the contingent outcome of a constant process of qualification." - Journal of Consumer CultureTable of ContentsIntroduction: Cola Connections and Worldly Things PART 1: SOFT DRINKS AND THE ECONOMY OF QUALITIES The Social Life of Worldly Things: Commodity Consumption and Globalization Globalizing Coca-Cola: The Multilocal Multinational Corporation Qualifying Products: Trademarks, Brands and Value-Creation A Network of Perspectives: The Meanings of Soft Drinks in Papua New Guinea PART 2: GLOBALIZATION, CITIZENSHIP AND THE POLITICS OF CONSUMPTION Corporations, Consumers and New Strategies of Citizenship Shareholder Activism: Consumer Citizenship Inside the Corporation Pouring Rights: Politics, Products, Agency and Change Conclusion: Product Networks and the Politics of Knowledge References

University Press plc You Gotta Have Wa
Book SynopsisA hilarious, informative, and riveting account of Japanese baseball and the cultural clashes that ensued when Americans began playing there professionally. In Japan, baseball is a way of life. It is a philosophy. It is besuboru. Its most important element is wa—group harmony—embodied in the proverb 'The nail that sticks up shall be hammered down.' In this witty and incisive book, Robert Whiting gives us a close-up look at besuboru's teams, obsessive ritualism, and history, as seen through the eyes of American players who found the Japanese approach—rigorous pregame practices, the tolerance for tie games, injured pitchers encouraged to “pitch through the pain”—completely baffling. With vivid accounts of East meeting West, involving Babe Ruth, Ichiro Suzuki, Bobby Valentine, Japanese home run king Sadaharu Oh, and many others, this lively and completely unique book is an utter gem and baseball classic.

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Routledge Companion to International
Book SynopsisThe hospitality sector is facing increasing competition and complexity over recent decades in its development towards a global industry. The strategic response to this is still that hospitality companies try to grow outside their traditional territories and domestic markets, while the expansion patterns and M&A activities of international hotel and restaurant chains reflect this phenomenon. Yet, interestingly, the strategies, concepts, and methods of internationalization as well as the managerial and organizational challenges and impacts of globalizing the hospitality business are under-researched in this industry. While the mainstream research on international management offers an abundance of information and knowledge on topics, players, trends, concepts, frameworks, or methodologies, its ability to produce viable insights for the hospitality industry is limited, as the mainstream research is taking place outside of the service sector. Specific research directions and relateTrade Review"In the cusp of a new industrial revolution, how is international hospitality shaped by the various emerging forces and pressures and how are businesses responding to the new challenges?
