John Wiley and Sons Ltd Why Do People Sing?: On Voice
Book SynopsisIn Why Do People Sing? Paddy Scannell explores some of the mysteries at the heart of vocal communication. What explains the communicative musicality of the voices between parent and child as a baby learns to talk? Can readers of fiction hear the voices of authors and characters within soundless written texts? How has radio affected voice, talk, music, and singing, and how has it made them public in new ways? And by putting the voice into recordings, to what extent have broadcasting technologies provided a radically new resource for historians? These questions and more are explored in the first three chapters. In the final chapter, Scannell boldly puts into words the inexpressible experience of listening to singing, wherein the glory of the human voice finds its purest expression. This highly original book makes a distinctive intervention by stressing the inherently positive qualities of talk (rather than language) as the basis for communication. Concise and beautifully written, it is suitable for students and scholars of media, communication, and other disciplines across the humanities, as well as general readers with an interest in this fascinating topic.Trade Review“Scannell’s book is a gem – distinctive and original. His commitment to a broad phenomenology of communication and the media offers an approach unlike anything else in the field, and his historical insights about the development of talk in broadcasting are unrivaled.”Martin Montgomery, University of Macau “In this probing set of personal meditations, Paddy Scannell plumbs our existential depths as interactive animals who find our ultimate meaning and freedom in the play of music and voice.”John Durham Peters, Yale UniversityTable of Contents Preface 1 The Voice of the Friend 2 Talk, Radio and Television 3 Technologies of Record 4 Why Do People Sing? John Wiley and Sons Ltd Creativity: Seven Keys to Unlock your Creative
Book SynopsisThis is a lively and thought-provoking book about how to do creativity, unlock your potential, and make a difference. The artists, musicians, and writers we think of as ’very creative’ are just like us, except that they have spent time developing and realising ideas, and have found the confidence to share them with the world. None of this comes naturally. This wide-ranging book offers research, advice, and philosophy to fuel your understanding and passion for creativity. David Gauntlett draws on his own experiences of making music and experimenting with digital media alongside 25 years of researching creativity. Including insights from a diverse array of creators, this book highlights the vitality of the individual creative voice in a world where social media offers a weird mix of inspiration and suffocation, and our struggles for social justice are equally hopeful and upsetting. Creativity shows how vulnerability, experimentation, and courage can enable us to become bold and engaging creators.Trade Review"Growing up is how we become alienated from ourselves and the creative superpowers we had as children. Gauntlett shows us the way back to play, learning, and the joy of realizing our true creative genius. A must-read."Cecilia Weckstrom, The LEGO Group"This wonderful book makes the impossibly complex process of creativity accessible, emotional, and playful."Clare Twomey, ceramic artist"We’re often told that creativity is a vital gift of the rarefied few, but Gauntlett shows that its magic can be unlocked for all of us. An inspiring, enthusiastic and, for this reader, life-shifting book!"Ben Barry, Dean of Fashion, Parsons School of DesignTable of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction 1. Identity 2. Experimenting 3.
The volume investigates in depth the phenomenon of the foreigner, who controlled by the schemata of social interaction can achieve both attractive and repulsive effects. These are often minimal situational shifts or context changes that determine the option for one side or the other and regulate the issue of social inclusion/exclusion without being stable over time. Attributions, labelling, stereotyping, stigmatization and discrimination that (can) be based on religious, ethnic, gender, ideological, economic, medical etc. categories ensure that inequalities are (re)produced in an interactive way via symbolic demarcations and the fields of one's own and the stranger's are being sealed. It is shown in this context, using examples of literary, cultural and linguistic analyses, that the problem of the foreigner does not only take on importance in light of the massive wave of migration and refugees, but also comes into its own in its social variant and entails (no less) critical encounters and/or painful arguments.
