  • Taylor & Francis Rural Planning Futures

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisRural Planning Futures charts the critical societal challenges that are reshaping rural places across the UK and Ireland. The book evaluates current planning processes and explores the prospects for an enhanced, cross-sectoral and holistic future practice that mediates rural change towards more resilient and sustainable outcomes. Rural places and planning have, for too long, been viewed as marginal to both the theory and practice of planning. However, rural places are central to addressing critical global challenges â from climate action, through nature recovery, energy transitions, and food security, to water quality â while also facing more localised conflicts around housing, the siting of infrastructure, and the challenge of sustaining local services. The policy response to these complex challenges has too often been fragmented, siloed, and fixated on the short-term. By illustrating how key 'rural capitals' are linked and integrated, this book argues for a reset of the rur

  • Taylor & Francis Ltd Religious Platonism

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn Plato's Laws is the earliest surviving fully developed cosmological argument. His influence on the philosophy of religion is wide ranging and this book examines both that and the influence of religion on Plato.Central to Plato's thought is the theory of forms, which holds that there exists a realm of forms, perfect ideals of which things in this world are but imperfect copies. In this book, originally published in 1959, Feibleman finds two diverse strands in Plato's philosophy: an idealism centered upon the Forms denying full ontological status to the realm of becoming, and a moderate realism granting actuality equal reality with Forms. For each strand Plato developed a conception of religion: a supernatural one derived from Orphism, and a naturalistic religion revering the traditional Olympian deities. Table of ContentsIntroduction: Parrhesia Part 1: Plato's Religious Philosophy 1. Plato's Method 2. Plato's Two Philosophies 3. The Greek Religious Inheritance 4. The Influence of Orphism 5. Plato's Two Religions Part 2: The Religious Influence of Plato 6. Aristotle's Religion 7. Philo's Philosophy of Religion 8. Plotinus' Philosophy of Religion 9. Book SynopsisPlato, Aristophanes and the creators of the 'Orphic' gold tablets employ the traditional tale of a journey to the realm of the dead to redefine the boundaries of their societies. The narratives in this 2004 book reveal their meanings through close analysis of the specific ways in which each makes use of the tradition.Trade ReviewReview of the hardback: 'Edmonds is a lively and intelligent guide to the many forks and detours on the journey. … anyone with an interest in Greek eschatology will find it a stimulating book.' JACTReview of the hardback: '… provides solid, interesting, and helpful insights'. Bryn Mawr Classical ReviewReview of the hardback: 'This is an enterprising, enjoyable, and scholarly book … Edmonds' extensive treatment of the gold funerary lamellae should help to make those puzzling but fascinating texts better known, and his discussions of both the Frogs and the Phaedo deserve close attention from anyone seriously interested in those very different yet mythologically related works. Edmonds' arguments are always informative and thought-provoking, even where they prompt disagreement.' Notre Dame Philosophical ReviewsReview of the hardback: '… stimulating … Edmond's approach leads to some intriguing discussion, and he does show how careful attention to the way the elements of a traditional tale are reworked in each telling can uncover hidden complexities.' Journal of Hellenic StudiesReview of the hardback: '… convincingly analyses how extensively Plato in the Phaedo redefines the ritual purity of the mysteries and funeral rites and traditional elements in mortuary journeys … The fascination for the reader in this analysis, as in Edmond's earlier ones, will be found in the details.' Raymond J. Clark, University of OttowaTable of Contents1. Introduction: the start of the journey; 2. Roadmaps of déviance: the 'Orphic' gold tablets; 3. Descent into the depths of comedy: The Frogs of Aristophanes; 4. The upward path of philosophy: the myth in Plato's Phaedo; 5. Conclusions: the end of the road.

  • Cambridge University Press Finding your Social Science Project

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe most important step in social science research is the first step finding a topic. Unfortunately, little guidance on this crucial and difficult challenge is available. Methodological studies and courses tend to focus on theory testing rather than theory generation. This book aims to redress that imbalance. The first part of the book offers an overview of the book''s central concerns. How do social scientists arrive at ideas for their work? What are the different ways in which a study can contribute to knowledge in a field? The second part of the book offers suggestions about how to think creatively, including general strategies for finding a topic and heuristics for discovery. The third part of the book shows how data exploration may assist in generating theories and hypotheses. The fourth part of the book offers suggestions about how to fashion disparate ideas into a theory.Trade Review'Exploration and inspiration are necessary to locate a good social science topic; and this book tells you why and shows you how. Playful and insightful; highly recommended.' Richard Swedberg, Cornell University, New York'This innovative book endorses diverse approaches to focusing research projects: induction from data, deduction from theory, concentration on data that lends itself to strong causal inference (for example, natural experiments), and concern with explaining major events in the world. The book is engagingly written and will be an excellent text in the classroom. Bravo for Gerring and Seawright!' David Collier, UC BerkeleyTable of Contents1.
