Springer International Publishing AG Noninvasive Ventilation Outside Intensive Care
Book SynopsisThis book aims to highlight the importance of the development of health conditions and demand for the application of noninvasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) outside the intensive care units (ICUs); the diversification of possible scenarios outside the ICUs; the need to establish references that consolidate this phenomenon and the healthcare organizations models. In the last decades the extension of the use of NIMV outside of the ICUs has led to the generation of protocols and to the creation of new in-hospital care models. In this field, the main determining factors are a better knowledge of technique, technological advancement, better monitoring capacity, the creation of multidisciplinary teams adequately trained in their application, and social and health events that have overloaded ICUs. All these elements have promoted the creation of these NIMV units outside ICUs. This new reality entails the need for clarification of concepts, recommendations, and analysis of how to plan NIMV.Although the literature that clearly determine the indications and aids on the use of NIMV is considerable, this volume, pointing out the diversity of different healthcare models to define how to organize NIMV outside the ICUs, shed a light and bring a clear benefit to the scientific community involved. The book is structured in eleven main sections analyzing the epidemiology and trends for NIMV healthcare models and determining factors for these models outside ICUs.The originality of the work, its clear clinical-practical impact and the multidisciplinary approach given by all healthcare professionals involved (intensivists, pneumologists, internal medicine and emergency medicine specialists, geriatricians, chest respiratory therapists, etc.) is very relevant for the thoroughness of the book. Springer International Publishing AG Hemodynamic Monitoring in the ICU
Book SynopsisThis book describes the pathophysiological significance of the hemodynamic monitoring parameters available to the clinician and their role in providing reliable and reproducible information on the cardiocirculatory status of a patient in shock. It is explained how measurements of these parameters enable the intensivist to understand the patient’s condition and to make more informed treatment decisions in order to optimize the hemodynamic status and improve the prognosis. Full guidance is provided on measurement of intravascular blood pressures, cardiac output, and derived variables. Methods of cardiac output determination based on the classical pulmonary thermodilution, transpulmonary thermodilution, echocardiography, and Doppler techniques are reviewed. Techniques based on calibrated and non-calibrated pulse contour analysis are discussed, with attention to their limitations. Furthermore, the dynamic indices of fluid responsiveness, their clinical applications, and issues related to their use are addressed. Care is also taken to explain the physiological concepts underlying various devices used by anesthesiologists and intensivists.Trade Review“This is a brief monograph that provides an excellent overview of the multitude of available cardiovascular and metabolic monitors. … Trainees in critical care and staff at all levels are an appropriate audience for this book. … Chapters are clearly written with excellent line drawings highlighting physiological principles. … This book is recommended for its concise presentation of essential physiology and broad review of current and historic monitoring techniques.” (David J. Dries, Doody's Book Reviews, September, 2016)Table of ContentsBlood pressure.- Monitoring of cardiac output and its derivatives.- Hemodynamic monitoring techniques.- Monitoring the adequacy of oxygen supply and demand.- Echocardiography.- Preload dependency dynamic indices.- Perspectives.

Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. KG Head, Thoracic, Abdominal, and Vascular Injuries:
Book SynopsisThere currently is a clear tendency to an increasing number of accidental injuries in elderly people, in sport injuries and car crashes also in countries which recently joined the European Union and candidates to join the European Union. Patients expect very good functional results even after serious injuries. But in contrast to this development, Trauma Surgery as an independent field, is not yet established in all European countries. Therefore, it seems mandatory to compile a book that covers the state-of-the-art in Trauma Surgery. The book also serves to harmonise the practice of Trauma Surgery within the European Union, and to prepare for the exam of the U.E.M.S.Trade ReviewFrom the reviews:“This is the first of three volumes in the European Manual of Medicine series intended to provide up-to-date information on trauma for both clinicians in training and senior practitioners. … General and trauma surgeons needing an outline of the general approach to surgical trauma care or preparing for standardized examinations are an appropriate audience for this work drawn from North American and European specialists. … This book is a good reflection of contemporary care which may be used by practicing surgeons.” (David J.
