  • The Lilliput Press Ltd Paddy Mo: A Biography of Dr.Patrick Moriarty

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThis biography charts the life of Paddy Moriarty, the Kerryborn Chief Executive of ESB, a man who revolutionized corporate life during his leadership of the largest semi-state company in Ireland in the 1980s and 1990s. Born in Dingle in 1926, he became one of Ireland's leading business people of the twentieth century as he transformed ESB into a world-class electricity provider and a highly efficient, commercially driven company. Having built the power infrastructure of the new State, ESB played a critical role in the revitalization of the Irish economy and, on Moriarty's watch, proceeded to assist in developing the foundations of the Celtic Tiger economy. His vision was to make ESB 'the best electricity utility in the whole world', developing the highest standards of infrastructure at home while developing an international business in the economies of North and Central America, Africa, the Middle East and the Far East. Moriarty joined ESB as a clerical officer in June 1945 at the age of nineteen and quickly gained a reputation as a young man with a determined view on how business should be run. He rose rapidly through the company ranks. He was head of Research and Audit in 1961, Assistant Chief Financial Officer in 1967 and Director Personnel in 1970, before becoming Chief Executive in 1981 and Chairman ESB in 1991. The man they called Paddy Mo conducted comprehensive and difficult industrial relations negotiations with the trade unions, ensuring harmony in the workplace during the 1980s – a decade of fast-moving change, massive technological reform and associated redundancies. His interpersonal skills, as well as his business instincts, became legendary. With Taoiseach Charles Haughey he helped pioneer the North-South Erne Waterways project in a bid to revitalize border communities. He was also a significant patron of the arts, encouraging sponsorship of painters, sculptors and musicians. His wide-ranging interests included sports and horse racing, with one of the Leopardstown classics being named in his honour. A sense of family, which included his younger brother Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh the renowned GAA broadcaster and commentator, was central to his world view.

  • The Corporate Governance Debate, 1873-1914

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Corporate Governance Debate, 1873-1914

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe downfall of Enron, Global Crossing, WorldCom and other large American firms, and the resulting shockwaves in the world economy, have brought the subject of corporate governance to the forefront of business thinking. As well as new theorising on the subject, many researchers in academia, business and the public sector are turning to the events of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, which in many ways parallel those of today. The rise of big trusts and corporations in the USA in the late 19th century was accompanied by serious legal and ethical abuses of power by these corporations and their managers. The result was a bitter battle between the business establishment on the one hand and reforming journalists, lawyers and economists on the other, a battle which focused around a single idea: what is the purpose of the business corporation? What is its place in society? What are its duties to that society, and what are the responsibilities of its managers and owners? This set includes works by a number of major early writers on corporate governance. The books presented here capture that debate in all its variety, and the views of their authors continue to resonate today.Table of ContentsVolume 1 [462pp] D.C. Neben der fachlichen Expertise soll der Chefarzt (w/m) über soziale und kommunikative Kompetenz, Führungsstärke und Organisationsgeschick verfügen, um sein Team als Vorbild der Abteilung sicher und konsequent zu führen. • The Service Innovation Handbook: Action-oriented

BIS Publishers B.V. The Service Innovation Handbook: Action-oriented

Book SynopsisThis is an action-oriented book for managers and entrepreneurs searching ways to tackle issues they face in terms of developing and delivering services. The book focuses on service organizations, but has a broad interpretation of what services are. Directed to the business world and combines inspirational text that is full of examples, with the features of a useful handbook of practical methods with associated templates. The central argument is that managers and entrepreneurs designing service offerings will benefit from using approaches and methods from design and the arts, especially at the early stages of projects. Sometimes called “design thinking” or “design innovation”, such approaches help organizations explore and create new configurations of people and things that support users, customers, staff and partners in creating value together. In short, this book argues that design and arts-based approaches are valuable to managers and entrepreneurs designing services, when uncertainty and ambiguity are high. It shows when and how to use these approaches, introduces specific methods, reviews their strengths and limitations, and finally helps managers think through what it takes to start using them in projects and within teams and develop the culture and behaviours that access the creativity they support.

Book SynopsisFew events in the history of humanity rival the Industrial Revolution. This title offers an account of how dramatic changes in institutions - the formal and informal rules that govern a society - resulted from the unprecedented economic development that took place during the Industrial Revolution.Trade Review"Douglas W. Allen has written a brilliant and challenging book that puts the measurement problem in the foreground to convincingly explain the logic of pre-modern institutions-institutions that the typical modern person, until reading Allen, views as the embodiment of chaos, inefficiency, corruption, and ineptitude. The University of Chicago Press Tournament of Lawyers The Transformation of the

Book SynopsisTournament of Lawyers traces in detail the rise of one hundred of the nation's top firms in order to diagnose the health of the business of American law. Galanter and Palay demonstrate that much of the large firm's organizational success stems from its ability to blend the talents of experienced partners with those of energetic junior lawyers driven by a powerful incentivethe race to win the promotion-to-partner tournament. This calmly reasoned study reveals, however, that the very causes of the spiraling growth of the large law firm may lead to its undoing. Galanter and Palay pose questions and offer some answers which are certain to change the way big firm practice is regarded. To describe their work as challenging is something of an understatement: they at times delight, stimulate, frustrate and even depress the reader, but they never disappoint. Tournament of Lawyers is essential to the understanding of the business of the big law firms.Jean and Colin Fergus, New York Law Journal

Book SynopsisIt is the contemporary elixir from which all manner of being emerges, the metamorphic sublime, an alchemist's dream. So begins Palma Africana, the latest attempt by anthropologist Michael Taussig to make sense of the contemporary moment. But to what elixir does he refer? Palm oil. Saturating everything from potato chips to nail polish, palm oil has made its way into half of the packaged goods in our supermarkets. By 2020, world production will be double what it was in 2000. In Colombia, palm oil plantations are covering over one-time cornucopias of animal, bird, and plant life. Over time, they threaten indigenous livelihoods and give rise to abusive labor conditions and major human rights violations. The list of entwined horrorsclimatic, biological, socialis long. But Taussig takes no comfort in our usual labels: habitat loss, human rights abuses, climate change. The shock of these words has passed; nowadays it is all a blur. Book SynopsisMeasuring innovation is a challenging task, both for researchers and for national statisticians, and it is increasingly important in light of the ongoing digital revolution. National accounts and many other economic statistics were designed before the emergence of the digital economy and the growth in importance of intangible capital. They do not yet fully capture the wide range of innovative activity that is observed in modern economies. This volume examines how to measure innovation, track its effects on economic activity and on prices, and understand how it has changed the structure of production processes, labor markets, and organizational form and operation in business. The contributors explore new approaches to and data sources for measurement, such as collecting data for a particular innovation as opposed to a firm and using trademarks for tracking innovation. They also consider the connections between university-based R&D and business start-ups and the potential impacts of innoTrade Review"For those of us interested in the need to measure better—which means understanding better—the increasingly intangible economy, this is a really interesting book. Chandler, emeritus, Harvard Business School, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Bancroft Prize for history Business history has largely ignored the ancient world, while in fact there is considerable evidence that business played an important in it. This book provides an accessible, well written validation of this argument. -- Karl Moore, Desautels Faculty of Management, McGill University An excellent book. Booklist Roberts's well-documented, readable book provides valuable insight into the past and lessons for the present...highly recommended. ChoiceTable of ContentsForeword, by William H.
