Open University Press The Media in Russia
Book Synopsis"Journalism is often said to be the first rough draft of history. The most interesting aspect of this book is that Anna Arutunyan, an American-trained journalist working in Moscow, provides an insiderâs view of Russian journalism from a valuable perspective. As a result, the book gives a level of detail and anecdote about media personalities and outlets that is both informative and interesting."Sarah Oates, Slavonic and East European Review April 2011.This book introduces readers to the Russian media, its current landscape, and its history by outlining the chief challenges faced by Russian journalists on their quest for media freedom. Focusing on how the Government has traditionally controlled the media through censorship, financial involvement, and relations between media moguls and the State, the book analyses to what extent the Russian media has become 'free' since the fall of Communism. The author questions whether freedom is possible at all in a society wheTable of ContentsIntroduction The current media playing field Media and power: ownership in the age of free marketFreedom in the Russian press The Russian newspaper, then and now Television and film The role of radio: a common ear The internet, blogging and the media of the futureConclusion

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Advanced Industrial Economics
Book SynopsisThis updated and substantially revised 2nd edition, like its predecessor, integrates a discussion of the latest theoretical developments with a comprehensive review of empirical work. With a more cohesive writing style, reduced size, additional invaluable information, and new problems to solve, Advanced Industrial Economics, Second Edition is a key text in industrial economics.Trade Review"This is an outstanding textbook. It covers practically anything one would ever want to include in a lecture course in Advanced IO, and it does so with the perfect blending of rigorous theory and advanced empirical analysis." Gianni De Fraja, University of York, and CEPR "Stephen Martin's book is a marvellous effort. No other text provides such a comprehensive and updated overview of the literature of modern industrial economics. I wholeheartedly recommend it for graduate courses in the subject or as a reference for any professional economist.... The feature that most distinguishes Advanced Industrial Economics from competitors is the extended treatment of the literature on empirical tests of market structure and performance. This was long overdue, and Martin has to be commended for introducing new generations of students to empirical work int his field. As a teaching tool, there is much to admire in the book as well: many of the issues are given a histroical perspective so that students can better appreciate the direction in which both the theory and the empirical work has progressed. Martin also provides a wealth of material on the book's website, including an extended discussion of the theory of contestable markets as well as a solutions manual." Oxford University Press The Industrial Revolution 17601830
Book SynopsisThe Industrial Revolution has sometimes been regarded as a catastrophe which desecrated the English landscape and brought social opporession and appalling physical hardship to the workers. In this book, however, it is presented as an important and beneficial mark of progress. In spite of destructive wars and a rapid growth of population, the material living standards of most of the British people improved, and the technical innovations not only brought economic rewards but also provoked greater intellectual ingenuity. Innovation is therefore seen by Ashton not just as an economic course but as a social and cultural process influenced by factors such as war and peace and the framework of law and institutions. Lucidly argued and authoritative, this bookplaces the phenomenon of the Industrial Revolution in a stimulating perpsective. A new Preface by Professor Pat Hudson outlines the results of recent research precipitated by Ashton''s themes: the true causes of population growth in the eiTable of ContentsPreface ; Introduction ; 1. Oxford University Press The KnowledgeCreating Company How Japanese Companies Create the Dynamics of Innovation
Book SynopsisHow has Japan become a major economic power, a world leader in the automotive and electronics industries? What is the secret of their success? The consensus has been that, though the Japanese are not particularly innovative, they are exceptionally skilful at imitation, at improving products that already exist. But now two leading Japanese business experts, Ikujiro Nonaka and Hiro Takeuchi, turn this conventional wisdom on its head: Japanese firms are successful, they contend, precisely because they are innovative, because they create new knowledge and use it to produce successful products and technologies.Examining case studies drawn from such firms as Honda, Canon, Matsushita, NEC, 3M, GE, and the U.S. Marines, this book reveals how Japanese companies translate tacit to explicit knowledge and use it to produce new processes, products, and services.Trade ReviewWhen the authors detail specific examples of knowledge creation, the reader's interest awakens. * The Wall Street Journal *Nonaka and Tekuchi demonstrate for the reader how it is possible to transfer tacit knowledge into explicit, which in turn is used to create new knowledge. * Knowledge Management, June 2000 *Nonaka is indispensable. * Financial Times *Nonaka and Takeuchi have written an academic study that summarises their theories and presents case studies illustrative to a western audience ... a guide to practitioners, based on materials for workshops and consultancy by the authors. * Financial Times *Provides a perceptive and very relevant analysis of how Japanese companies go about creating new knowledge organizationally ... Oxford University Press The Future of the Professions
Book SynopsisThis book predicts the decline of today''s professions and introduces the people and systems that will replace them. In an internet-enhanced society, according to Richard Susskind and Daniel Susskind, we will neither need nor want doctors, teachers, accountants, architects, the clergy, consultants, lawyers, and many others, to work as they did in the 20th century. The Future of the Professions explains how increasingly capable technologies - from telepresence to artificial intelligence - will place the ''practical expertise'' of the finest specialists at the fingertips of everyone, often at no or low cost and without face-to-face interaction. The authors challenge the ''grand bargain'' - the arrangement that grants various monopolies to today''s professionals. They argue that our current professions are antiquated, opaque and no longer affordable, and that the expertise of their best is enjoyed only by a few. In their place, they propose five new models for producing and distributing expertise in society. The book raises profound policy issues, not least about employment (they envisage a new generation of ''open-collared workers'') and about control over online expertise (they warn of new ''gatekeepers'') - in an era when machines become more capable than human beings at most tasks. With a new preface exploring recent critical developments, this updated edition builds on the authors'' groundbreaking research into more than a dozen professions. Illustrated with numerous examples from each, this is the first book to assess and question the relevance of the professions in the 21st century.Trade ReviewReview from previous edition Perhaps the forthcoming tidal wave of technology set to engulf us all will throw up new opportunities for the legal profession — which is probably why just about every lawyer in London, so we are told, has bought a copy of this challenging, provocative, timely and important book. If you care about the future of your profession and wish to add further comment to the raging controversies surrounding it, better get yourself a copy now. * Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richard Green Chambers *In The Future of the Professions, father-and-son authors Richard and Daniel Susskind do a remorselessly effective job of demolishing the self-deception most people engage in when comparing themselves to machines. * Richard Waters, Financial Times *The authors are undoubtedly right that the professions will change more in the next quarter-century than they have in the previous three. * The Economist *Remarkable work. * Tom Watson, The Guardian *This is a bold book ... The Future of the Professions helps us to recognise the professions' current methods as convoluted, self-serving rituals designed to wrap simple tasks in mystique. * Giles Wilkes, Prospect *The Future of the Professions is a paradox that only a human mind could appreciate: the inevitable death of the professions is presented in an expert, original and witty work by two professionals whose skills (in thinking, writing and consultancy) are unlikely any time soon to be replicated by a machine. * David Pannick, The Times *The Future of the Professions: How Technology Will Transform the Work of Human Experts, is a must read for anyone who wants to gain insights into where the legal profession is going ... Nothing else I have read more clearly and convincingly elucidates the future of legal services and how technology will transform the traditional practice of law. * Dan Pinnington, Slaw *An act of delicious iconoclasm. * Prospect Magazine *Both a good read and a good starter for strategic planning in professional firms * Chris Yapp, Future Tech Blog *I suggest that everyone who considers themselves 'professional' reads this book, especially those who are aged, say, 20-45, who need to secure their role in the new world of work. The authors predict that "our professions will be dismantled incrementally". If they are right, todays lawyers need to prepare for it, and the sooner the better. * Dan Bindman, Legal Futures *A fascinating and challenging book. * Medium *The study is exceptionally well informed and important contribution to thinking about the future of professional work * Network Review *As the saying is, the future is now and we ignore it at our peril. Please read this book. * Law Skills *The book is written in a relaxed, flowing and easily-consumable style ... a read of The Future of the Professions is time very well-spent. * Jeremy Hopkins, Future of Law *Everyone interested in the future well-being of society must read this thoroughly researched and compelling book - to understand how technology can and will be used to enable the public to do far more for themselves. In reshaping our system of justice so that it can more cost-effectively underpin our democratic society and its prosperity, I have had the benefit of the Susskinds core thesis how to use technology not simply to enable the legal professions to do better what they now do, but to reshape justice for the benefit of the public. * Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd, the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales *If the Susskinds are right we are at the start of a social revolution. Technology has begun to transform social class, economic activity, political discourse, working life and the limits of human activity. In The Future of the Professions they relentlessly and unyieldingly but also entertainingly and elegantly set about proving their point. I started knowing that their argument was important, I finished convinced that it was right. This is a necessary book. It was necessary that it be written and necessary that you read it. * Daniel Finkelstein, The Times *Impressive new book. * Edward Fennell, The Times *I know of no better book for anyone interested in the future of skilled jobs and society. Drawing on an astounding range of sources and the latest research, The Future of the Professions offers vital insights into the unprecedented disruption facing all the professions. * Professor Ian Goldin, Professor of Globalisation and Development and Director of the Oxford Martin School, University of Oxford *In this magisterial survey Richard and Daniel Susskind demolish each profession's faith in its immutable uniqueness. Instead they trace inexorable and universal forces that will drive disintermediation, deconstruction and disruption. Written with scholarly thoroughness, this is an urgent manifesto and practical blueprint for the leaders of every professional firm. * Philip Evans, Senior Partner & BCG Fellow, The Boston Consulting Group *Table of ContentsPreface to the Updated Edition IntroductionI: Change 1: The Grand Bargain 2: From the Vanguard 3: Patterns Across the ProfessionsII: Theory 4: Information and Technology 5: Production and Distribution of KnowledgeIII: Implications 6: Objections and Anxieties 7: After the Professions Conclusion: What Future Should We Want?

Oxford University Press, USA Business Groups in East Asia Financial Crisis Restructuring and New Growth
Book SynopsisThe 1997 Asian Crisis principally affected Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Korea, as well as other East Asian countries heavily dependent on intra-regional trade. Banks and other financial institutions quickly become insolvent, and heavily indebted industrial firms went bankrupt. Many of these firms were affiliated with the business groups of this region, yet most groups did not immediately collapse, indeed they proved remarkably robust, some surviving and even prospering. This book examines these East Asian business groups and their subsequent restructuring following the Asian Crisis. East Asian nations embarked on very different trajectories to this common external shock. The Asian Crisis affected the inter-relationships among the socio-cultural environment, the state, and the market of each country quite differently and had distinct effects on the operations of these countries'' business groups. This slow yet divergent pattern of development provides evidence against theories of rapid global convergence.Yet East Asian business groups face an uncertain future. Foreign investors'' influence has increased substantially since the crisis, as East Asian governments had to accommodate their demands to keep attracting foreign capital. Governments supervise banks more closely and have loosened restrictions on mergers and hostile takeovers, further strengthening the discipline of the market. Various entry barriers that had inhibited foreign multinationals from competing in national markets were lifted, exposing business groups to intensified foreign competition. Under these new conditions, business groups in East Asia should reconfigure their business structures and adjust their corporate governance systems to regain momentum for further growth. Business groups will continue to be important vehicles for the sustained future growth of this region, and this book presents a substantial amount of new data on this, which will be of interest to academics, researchers, and advanced students of East Asian business, and business practitioners working within the region.Table of Contents1. Oxford University Press Industrial Organization in Context
Book SynopsisIndustrial Organization is a central branch of microeconomics that has historically provoked a great deal of debate among economists. Steve Martin draws on this debate and economic history in order to examine the economics of markets, industries and their participants and in doing so addresses the implications for public policy towards business behaviour. Industrial Organization in Context leads students through the essential concepts that are central to understanding the strategic behaviour of firms and the policy questions at the heart of Industrial Organization. It takes an international approach, examining both US Antitrust and EU Competition Policy and their development. Classic and contemporary examples serve to illustrate the theory and experimental tests of models help students to study economic questions. This book is accompanied by an Online Resource Centre which includes:For students: essay questions, links to useful websites, historical timelinesFor lecturers: Scientific WorTrade ReviewThe author has a delightful writing style, all the time making clear why he comes at the problems from a historical perspective. * Barry Keating, University of Notre Dame *The extensive coverage of both regulation and 10 topics in one book is rare. Book SynopsisFew events in the history of humanity rival the Industrial Revolution. This title offers an account of how dramatic changes in institutions - the formal and informal rules that govern a society - resulted from the unprecedented economic development that took place during the Industrial Revolution.Trade Review"Douglas W. Book SynopsisTournament of Lawyers traces in detail the rise of one hundred of the nation's top firms in order to diagnose the health of the business of American law. Galanter and Palay demonstrate that much of the large firm's organizational success stems from its ability to blend the talents of experienced partners with those of energetic junior lawyers driven by a powerful incentivethe race to win the promotion-to-partner tournament. This calmly reasoned study reveals, however, that the very causes of the spiraling growth of the large law firm may lead to its undoing. Galanter and Palay pose questions and offer some answers which are certain to change the way big firm practice is regarded. To describe their work as challenging is something of an understatement: they at times delight, stimulate, frustrate and even depress the reader, but they never disappoint. Tournament of Lawyers is essential to the understanding of the business of the big law firms.Jean and Colin Fergus, New York Law Journal

The University of Chicago Press Palma Africana
Book SynopsisIt is the contemporary elixir from which all manner of being emerges, the metamorphic sublime, an alchemist's dream. So begins Palma Africana, the latest attempt by anthropologist Michael Taussig to make sense of the contemporary moment. But to what elixir does he refer? Palm oil. Saturating everything from potato chips to nail polish, palm oil has made its way into half of the packaged goods in our supermarkets. By 2020, world production will be double what it was in 2000. In Colombia, palm oil plantations are covering over one-time cornucopias of animal, bird, and plant life. Over time, they threaten indigenous livelihoods and give rise to abusive labor conditions and major human rights violations. The list of entwined horrorsclimatic, biological, socialis long. But Taussig takes no comfort in our usual labels: habitat loss, human rights abuses, climate change. The shock of these words has passed; nowadays it is all a blur. The University of Chicago Press The Economics of Artificial Intelligence
Book SynopsisAdvances in artificial intelligence (AI) highlight the potential of this technology to affect productivity, growth, inequality, market power, innovation, and employment. This volume seeks to set the agenda for economic research on the impact of AI. It covers four broad themes: AI as a general purpose technology; the relationships between AI, growth, jobs, and inequality; regulatory responses to changes brought on by AI; and the effects of AI on the way economic research is conducted. It explores the economic influence of machine learning, the branch of computational statistics that has driven much of the recent excitement around AI, as well as the economic impact of robotics and automation and the potential economic consequences of a still-hypothetical artificial general intelligence. The volume provides frameworks for understanding the economic impact of AI and identifies a number of open research questions. The University of Chicago Press Medical Monopoly
Book SynopsisDuring most of the nineteenth century, physicians and pharmacists alike considered medical patenting and the use of trademarks by drug manufacturers unethical forms of monopoly; physicians who prescribed patented drugs could be, and were, ostracized from the medical community. In the decades following the Civil War, however, complex changes in patent and trademark law intersected with the changing sensibilities of both physicians and pharmacists to make intellectual property rights in drug manufacturing scientifically and ethically legitimate. By World War I, patented and trademarked drugs had become essential to the practice of good medicine, aiding in the rise of the American pharmaceutical industry and forever altering the course of medicine. Drawing on a wealth of previously unused archival material, Medical Monopoly combines legal, medical, and business history to offer a sweeping new interpretation of the origins of the complex and often troubling relationship between the phaTrade Review"Immensely informative." * New York Review of Books *"Gabriel’s brilliant account of patent and trademark law and use is the first comprehensive attempt to integrate the history of pharmaceuticals . . . in the wider setting of economic history and intellectual property law history and represents a milestone in that respect." * Isis *"In his thought-provoking and well-researched book, Gabriel explores the evolution of patenting, and to a lesser extent, trademark registration, in the American pharmaceutical industry. It is a fascinating and timely contribution." * EH.net *"To legal historians interested in the regulatory state and corporate capitalism, Gabriel's well researched book offers new insight into monopoly as an analytic category and antimonopoly sentiment as a driver for law and policy. Gabriel also provides a unique perspective on the development of modem intellectual property, a story not previously told from the viewpoint of pharmacists and travelling drug salesmen." * Law & History Review *"This fascinating book serves as a pointed reminder that the sources of therapeutic rationale are just as much tied to the production and regulation of therapies as the collective decision-making on ethical practice." * New Books in Medicine *"Medical Monopoly: Intellectual Property Rights and the Origins of the Modern Pharmaceutical Industry, by historian of medicine and the biomedical sciences Joseph M.Gabriel, is a significant and beautifully written book. By linking the study of patenting and other monopolistic practices in the pharmaceutical industry, such as trademarks, to the history of therapeutic reform, it makes an original and valuable contribution to the historiography in a variety of fields, from intellectual property to therapeutic reform, medical ethics, and the pharmaceutical industry. Medical Monopoly is therefore of relevance to a broad range of scholars, but also to clinicians, bioethicists, and the wider public concerned by the power of companies and the potential for conflicts of interest within modern medicine." * Bulletin of the History of Medicine *"Gabriel’s study of the early pharmaceutical industry in the U.S. is an outstanding addition to new literature. To illustrate this complex argument, Gabriel does a superb job of weaving together broad trends in patent, trademark, and antitrust law with the evolution of drug manufacturing and medical practice. The book is packed with fascinating case studies of products and their makers. Like a skilled ethnographer, Gabriel is more intent on reconstructing how past actors conceived of their actions than passing judgment on them. Paying careful and fruitful attention to “the relationship between names and things,” he avoids oversimplifying the motives of makers, prescribers, and users of drugs. Gabriel rewrites not only the history of the pharmaceutical industry but that of American medicine as well. Specialists in the history of medicine, science, and technology will appreciate his work for the fresh perspective he provides on familiar subjects. Specialists in health care policy and public health will find useful insights into contemporary debates over bioequivalence and its global implications. Finally, historians of intellectual property rights will find much to interest them in this book." * The American Historical Review *“In this important new book, Gabriel traces the surprisingly dynamic relationship between intellectual property and the economics and politics of the pharmaceutical industry. Medical Monopoly narrates the formation and reorganization of the ‘ethical pharmaceutical industry’ in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries around questions of patents, trademarks, and a series of mutually defining alliances made between the medical profession and the modern pharmaceutical enterprise. Gabriel’s research in preparation for this volume has been meticulous, and his narrative pacing will help audiences from many different fields engage with the provocative story he has to tell. The resultant work is an elegant demonstration of the power of historical analysis in understanding the present-day connections between patents, trademarks, medical science, and the marketplace, with substantial implications for contemporary policy and practice.” -- Jeremy A. Greene, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine“In this lively account, Gabriel takes us back to the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to explore the early histories of the manufacturing, marketing, patenting, and regulation of drugs and their roles in transforming the practice of American medicine. Marrying a keen eye for detail with attention to the larger picture, Gabriel explores the tensions between beneficence and business in the emergent pharmaceutical industry. This meticulously researched book establishes Gabriel as one of the nation’s experts on the pharmaco-medical enterprise in America from the early Republic to the Progressive Era.” -- Elizabeth Watkins, University of California, San Francisco“Medical Monopoly is a fascinating book about the history of intellectual property (IP) rights in pharmaceuticals. Gabriel traces the role that patents and trademarks played in the development of the pharmaceutical industry, explores the question of whether IP rights promoted research and development, and identifies the changing attitudes of physicians and scientists to the propriety of patenting drugs. The book reaches a number of conclusions that are surprising to the contemporary student of both IP and pharmaceuticals, and Gabriel does a nice job of marshaling the massive amount of evidence he uncovered into a chronological narrative. This important work will be of interest to historians of patents and trademarks; to historians of medicine, science, and technology; and to scholars of contemporary IP and science policy.” -- Catherine Fisk, University of California, IrvineTable of ContentsA Note about Terms Introduction 1 Medical Science and Property Rights in the Early Republic 2 Monopoly and Ethics in the Antebellum Years 3 In the Shadow of War 4 Therapeutic Reform and the Reinterpretation of Monopoly 5 The Ambiguities of Abundance 6 The Embrace of Intellectual Property Conclusion: The Promise of ReformAcknowledgments Archival Collections ConsultedNotes Index
