Cambridge University Press Trajectories of Neoliberal Transformation European Industrial Relations Since the 1970s
Book SynopsisThis book has both empirical and theoretical goals. The primary empirical goal is to examine the evolution of industrial relations in Western Europe from the end of the 1970s up to the present. Its purpose is to evaluate the extent to which liberalization has taken hold of European industrial relations and institutions through five detailed, chapter-length studies, each focusing on a different country and including quantitative analysis. The book offers a comprehensive description and analysis of what has happened to the institutions that regulate the labor market, as well as the relations between employers, unions, and states in Western Europe since the collapse of the long postwar boom. The primary theoretical goal of this book is to provide a critical examination of some of the central claims of comparative political economy, particularly those involving the role and resilience of national institutions in regulating and managing capitalist political economies.Trade Review'This is an important book for all scholars and practitioners of industrial relations. It includes very detailed and insightful analyses of developments in industrial relations in a number of European countries (Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Sweden), but its ambition goes well beyond that.' Roberto Pedersini, TransferTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. Arguing for neoliberal convergence; 2. Quantitative analysis of industrial relations change; 3. Constructing a liberal market economy: the collapse of collective regulation in Britain; 4. State-led liberalization and the transformation of worker representation in France; 5. The University of Chicago Press Streets Railroads and the Great Strike of 1877
Book SynopsisFor one week in late July of 1877, America shook with anger and fear as a variety of urban residents, mostly working class, attacked railroad property in dozens of towns and cities. The Great Strike of 1877 was one of the largest and most violent urban uprisings in American history. Whereas most historians treat the event solely as a massive labor strike that targeted the railroads, David O. Stowell examines America's predicament more broadly to uncover the roots of this rebellion. He studies the urban origins of the Strike in three upstate New York cities--Buffalo, Albany, and Syracuse. He finds that locomotives rumbled through crowded urban spaces, sending panicked horses and their wagons careening through streets. Hundreds of people were killed and injured with appalling regularity. The trains also disrupted street traffic and obstructed certain forms of commerce. For these reasons, Stowell argues, The Great Strike was not simply an uprising fueled by disgruntled workers. Rather, i

A rich subtle and extremely readable account of a crucial moment in German history."--European Journal of American Studies."A rare jewel. . . . An extremely valuable source for comparative labour historians and for historians of the Weimar Republic and of National Socialism."--Revue Francaise D'etudes Americaines"Once I started reading this work, I could not put it down. Plotkin's diary is a remarkable analysis 'from the bottom up' of German society, working-class institution, and politics in the period of transition from the Weimar Republic to the rise of Hitler. A very important book."--Fraser Ottanelli, University of South Florida"Plotkin's writing is lively and conveys a vivid portrayal of German political and economic life on the eve of the Nazi takeover. It also provides an excellent sense of the impact of the Great Depression on German society. A valuable contribution to German history, labor history, and Jewish history."--Vicki Caron, author of Uneasy Asylum: France and the Jewish Refugee Crisis, 1933-1942"We have almost no eyewitness accounts of this period from nonjournalist observers and certainly none from the perspective of an American working-class observer. This work adds significantly to our knowledge on the history of internationalist trade unionism in the U.S. during the 1920s and 1930s, which is under-researched for this period. MO - University of Illinois Press The Labor Question in America Economic Democracy
Book SynopsisA nuanced assessment of citizenship and labor in the Progressive EraTrade Review"This is an important work, one of the most important recent books, not only in labor history, but in social theory. Filled with insights and surprising twists, it repays a careful reading and rereading. It is a model study; I have added it to my graduate reading lists and urge everyone to do the same."--Labor History"Recommended."--Choice "Currarino's book will enable readers to understand the transformations that took place during the Gilded Age, not only in the minds of workers but in American society as a whole. Altogether, the book is an impressive accomplishment."--Business History Review "This splendidly researched cultural and intellectual history of the 'labor question' during the Gilded Age offers a masterful explanation of the move from a producerist to a consumerist understanding of citizenship and labor. The Labor Question in America will be widely read by students and scholars of the labor movement, the development of twentieth-century liberalism, and the history of the Gilded Age."--Lawrence M. Lipin, author of Workers and the Wild: Conservation, Consumerism, and Labor in Oregon, 1910-30"Rosanne Currarino has provided a nuanced, deeply informed reading of the complex intellectual and cultural currents that shaped the labor question in the late nineteenth century. This is quite simply a marvelously informative book."--The Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era"More a cultural history of the debates over the role of labor in American life than a history of labor activities themselves. This book packs a surprisingly large volume of historical content and sophisticated argument into a slim volume."--History Teacher "This book is a valuable contribution to the history of the Gilded Age, as it provides scholars of the period with a concise intellectual history to better position studies of workers themselves."--Labor: Studies in Working-Class History of the Americas"A compelling case that economic democracy requires the full participation of the American working class in the economic life of the nation as both workers and consumers."--H-Net Reviews "Currarino has identified a vital shift in the debate over the meaning of democracy in a nation where such a large portion of its citizens were dependent upon others for their livelihoods."--American Historical Review

Book SynopsisThis on-the-ground labor history chronicles the bitterly contested labor conflict in the mid 1990s at the A. E. Staley corn processing plant in Decatur, Illinois, where workers waged one of the most hard-fought struggles in recent labor history. When the company launched a full-scale assault on its workers, Allied Industrial Workers Local 837 responded by educating and mobilizing its members, organizing strong support from the religious and African American communities, building a nationwide solidarity movement, and engaging in nonviolent civil disobedience at the plant gates. Through scores of interviews and videotapes of every union meeting, the authors bring the workers'' voices to the fore and reveal their innovative tactics that inform and strengthen today''s labor movement.Trade ReviewAwarded the Certificate of Superior Achievement by the Illinois State Historical Society, 2010. Anyone who continues to question the salience of class analysis for understanding nineteenth-century social history, and, of course, those who are already convinced of this approach, will want to read this study."--James R. Book SynopsisWinner of the William G. Bowen Prize Named a Triumph of 2018 by New York Times Book CriticsShortlisted for the 800-CEO-READ Business Book AwardThe untold history of the surprising origins of the gig economy--how deliberate decisions made by consultants and CEOs in the 50s and 60s upended the stability of the workplace and the lives of millions of working men and women in postwar America.Over the last fifty years, job security has cratered as the institutions that insulated us from volatility have been swept aside by a fervent belief in the market. Now every working person in America today asks the same question: how secure is my job? In Temp, Louis Hyman explains how we got to this precarious position and traces the real origins of the gig economy: it was created not by accident, but by choice through a series of deliberate decisions by consultants and CEOs--long before the digital revolution.Uber is not t

University of Minnesota Press Cesar Chavez
Book Synopsis[An] exceptionally interesting and intimate oral history . . . Against a background of motels and all-night cafés and strikes, the high relief in which the characters stand out is truly fascinating. Jacques Levy's biography of Chavez has unforgettable descriptive passages and fine photographs. The NationMexican-American civil rights and labor activist Cesar Chavez (19271993), comes to life in this vivid portrait of the charismatic and influential fighter who boycotted supermarkets and took on corporations, the government, and the powerful Teamsters Union. Jacques E. Levy gained unprecedented access to Chavez and the United Farm Workers Union in writing this account of one of the most successful labor movements in history which can also serve as a guidebook for social and political change. [The] definitive work. The book's major contribution lies in its portrait of the man himselfdeeply religious in an almost mystical fashion; a dedicated battler, but not a dedicated hater; a leader who

University of Minnesota Press Leverage of the Weak
Book SynopsisLeverage of the Weak enhances knowledge of movement emergence and offers the first systematic, multilayered comparisons across movements and nations in East Asia. Hwa-Jen Liu argues that examining material factors versus ideational factors is crucial to understanding the successes (or failures) of social movements.Trade Review"Theoretically sophisticated and methodologically meticulous, Hwa-Jen Liu’s book presents a fascinating comparative analysis of the labor and environmental movements in Taiwan and South Korea. Leverage of the Weak is one of the most interesting and significant books on East Asian development."—Hagen Koo, University of Hawai?i at Manoa"A sober yet hopeful account of the struggle to humanize capitalism, this comparative study is a valuable resource for those interested in social movements and labor, sociology, and economic development."—CHOICE"Because of its rich conceptual development, strong case study analysis and the generalisability of its findings, Leverage of the Weak is likely to appeal to a diverse academic audience."—Asian Studies Review"Essential reading for anyone interested in the historical development of Taiwan and South Korea."—American Journal of Sociology"Theoretically innovative, well-grounded in in-depth empirical research, and well written. Students who want to understand the rise social movements in East Asia, the relationship between labor and environmental activism, and the interactions between state actors and collective actors will learn a lot from this comparative study."—Mobilization"Liu’s rigorous, provocative, and ground-breaking analysis of the mutually constitutive relationship between movement power and capitalist transformation should be required reading for anyone interested in the political possibilities and challenges of social movements in today’s global political economy."—Labour/Le Travail"This is a detailed study on why and how social movements rise up during a nation’s development. Author Liu takes a comparative examination of two Northeast Asian countries, similar in many ways of political and economic development; modern industrialized Taiwan and South Korea."—Korean QuarterlyTable of ContentsContents AcknowledgmentsNote to ReadersAbbreviationsIntroduction: Strategic Comparison of Two Movements and Two Late Industrializers1. MP - University Of Minnesota Press Life Support Biocapital and the New History of
Book SynopsisTrade Review"Life Support is an ethnographic study of the biopolitics of vital energy from the perspective of Indian call centers and surrogacy hospitals. Kalindi Vora argues that affective and reproductive labors produce more than economic value by helping to form new life and socialities. This book enlivens feminist theories on the ethics of female empathy and exchange in the outsourcing of care."—Aihwa Ong, coeditor of Asian Biotech and Worlding Cities "The reader of this slim volume is likely to be astonished in that Vora’s book genuinely makes good on its title, delivering an original, dense, and entirely coherent theorization of biocapital."—Antipode"[A]n engaging read."—CHOICE"Vora’s analysis in terms of 'vital energy' is given particularly force because of her choice to set labor of a very literally embodied sort—the biological labor of pregnancy, 'commissioned' by intending parents from far away and compensated by a flat fee—alongside capital flows that are easier to mistake as simply financial and immaterial. Her comparison returns us sharply to the biological substance or embodied materiality of all labor."—Somatosphere"An engaging and provocative read that makes a significant contribution to current debates on globalization and labor."—Pacific AffairsTable of ContentsContentsIntroduction. MJ - Ohio University Press A History of the Excluded Making Family a Refuge from State in TwentiethCentury Tanzania Eastern African Studies
Book SynopsisThe twentieth-century history of Njombe, the Southern Highlands district of Tanzania, can aptly be summed up as exclusion within incorporation. Njombe was marginalized even as it was incorporated into the colonial economy.Trade Review“By charting the history of family dynamics among the Wabena from World War I through early independence, A History of the Excluded shines a particularly powerful light on how individuals experienced the demands of migrant labor and plantation conditions, the introduction of new farming technologies and business opportunities, and the policies of TANU national settlement and market controls—all within family, not state, parameters.” * African Studies Review *“A History of the Excluded is part of a recent trend in Africanist writing that does not celebrate the nation-state and nationalism, as an earlier optimistic historiography did, but rather sees them as a threatening presence that, connected to a global economy, brings poverty and insecurity.” * International Journal of African Historical Studies *
