Book SynopsisChina is in the midst of transitioning from a manufacturing-based economy to one driven by innovation and knowledge. This up-to-date analysis evaluates China''s state-led approach to science and technology, and its successes and failures. In recent decades, China has seen huge investments in high-tech science parks, a surge in home-grown top-ranked global companies, and a significant increase in scientific publications and patents. Helped by state policies and a flexible business culture, the country has been able to leapfrog its way to a more globally competitive position. However, the authors argue that this approach might not yield the same level of progress going forward if China does not address serious institutional, organizational, and cultural obstacles. While not impossible, this task may well prove to be more difficult for the Chinese Communist Party than the challenges that China has faced in the past.Trade Review"This highly important work gives us insightful analysis founded on a tremendous depth of scholarship and interviews. It is the most comprehensive account of China's innovation system through a western lens."—Margaret McCuaig-Johnston, University of Alberta "Innovation in China offers a masterful account of China's innovation system, its working, and its impacts (for better and worse). A must read for those who care about innovation, China, or both." —Dan Breznitz, University of Toronto "The various aspects related to the effectiveness of China's industrial and innovation policy have long been debated and analysed, but have never been fully understood. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisBangladeshi villagers with mobile phones helped build what is now a thriving $200m company. What is the lesson for the rest of the world? In You Can Hear Me Now, Nick Sullivan answers this question through the compelling story of Iqbal Quadir, a local entrepreneur.Trade ReviewUntil recently, the outlook for many of the poorest people in Bangladesh was dismal. Despite previous long-term aid from the international community to improve the country's infrastructure and economy, sustainable development was hampered by corruption and governmental inefficiency. This book tells the story of Western-trained entrepreneur Iqbal Quadir, the driving force behind the creation of GrameenPhone, the largest Bangladeshi GSM (Global System for Mobile) cell-phone operation. Quadir had the innovative idea of using local Western-trained entrepreneurs to help villagers attain micro-loans funded by foreign investors (and generated by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yanus) and then showing villagers how to operate cell-phone leasing businesses. Sullivan refers to this successful business model as the "external combustion engine" because of its impressive multiplier effects on economic growth. Applications of this model in other poverty-stricken areas worldwide have repeatedly yielded similar results. This book offers valuable insights about the use of cell phones and technology-based investments to generate wealth and demonstrates that entrepreneurship may be more fruitful than aid. This valuable work can be effectively integrated into public administration, global business, and human resource academic courses. —Caroline Geck, Kean Univ. Book SynopsisWhatever it reveals, the results arising from the Large Hadron Collider will profoundly alter our understanding of the cosmos and the atom and stimulate amateur and professional scientists for years to come.Trade Review[A] practical attitude is typical of The Quantum Frontier... a useful experimental companion to the many theory-oriented books on particle physics. Physics World 2010 What Lincoln does brilliantly is dispel the popular myth that the LHC was built solely to discover the Higgs boson, or 'God particle'. This is a project with a far wider reach... His fresh analogies and insights make this book very readable. -- Valerie Jamieson New Scientist 2009 I deeply enjoyed Lincoln's very accessible discussions of antimatter and Cerenkov radiation. And the in-depth explanations of what the different calorimeters and solenoids do inside the LHC's vast underground accelerator are fascinating. -- Sally Adee IEEE Spectrum Magazine 2009 The Quantum Frontier: The Large Hadron Collider should be in every physics library: it offers an exciting assessment of the Large Haldron Collider, which runs between France and Switzerland, and surveys just why its opening is so significant. You needn't be a physicist to appreciate its importance, and the clear explorations in layman's terms imparts excitement. Perfect for any general lending library strong in science. Midwest Book Review 2009 A Fermilab scientist conveys the excitement surrounding the LHC. Science News 2009 The Quantum Frontier... prepares readers with what they can anticipate when the LHC becomes operational. -- John S. Rigden and Roger H. Stuewer Physics in Perspective 2009 Don Lincoln's playful, energetic style took me from the fundamentals of contemporary physics through to the extremely complex and sophisticated guts of the LHC experiments, touching on everything from the Earth's 'inevitable' destruction by black holes to speculated future physics experiements in a post-LHC era. Cracking it open for the first time, I was worried that a book taking under 200 pages to cover such an ambitious topic would be riddled with sterile facts listed on after the other. But the contrary is what I found. -- Jordan Juras CERN Courier 2009 The book is written in a very readable and entertaining style, and I can warmly recommend it to anyone with more than a passing interest in science. -- John L. • Bubbles and Crashes

Stanford University Press Bubbles and Crashes

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFinancial market bubbles are recurring, often painful, reminders of the costs and benefits of capitalism. While many books have studied financial manias and crises, most fail to compare times of turmoil with times of stability. In Bubbles and Crashes, Brent Goldfarb and David A. Kirsch give us new insights into the causes of speculative booms and busts. They identify a class of assetsmajor technological innovationsthat can, but does not necessarily, produce bubbles. This methodological twist is essential: Only by comparing similar events that sometimes lead to booms and busts can we ascertain the root causes of bubbles. Using a sample of eighty-eight technologies spanning 150 years, Goldfarb and Kirsch find that four factors play a key role in these episodes: the degree of uncertainty surrounding a particular innovation, the attentive presence of novice investors, the opportunity to directly invest in companies that specialize in the technology, and whether or not a technology is a gooTrade Review"Goldfarb and Kirsch possess a keen understanding of the history of technological innovation and the evolution and implementation of new technologies and their respective impact on society. Their work sheds light on causal factors that were not previously well understood with respect to technological innovation and the underlying dynamics which lead innovation to spawn speculative bubbles. Bubbles and Crashes provides important insights for both investors and policy makers to recognize bubbles and implement policies to minimize their impact."—Jonathan Rosenberg, Senior Vice President, Alphabet"A fascinating account of how and when new technologies lead to exuberant asset prices. Anyone who thinks about innovation and financial markets will enjoy this book."—Jonathan Levin, Stanford Graduate School of Business"Strongly grounding their work in historical evidence, Goldfarb and Kirsch advance our understanding of how technological innovations sometimes do, and sometimes don't, lead to financial bubbles. They move the discussion of bubbles and crashes away from journalism and toward science. Investors and finance professionals along with financial regulators and policy makers need to absorb the lessons of this provocative analysis."—Richard Sylla, New York University"What an engaging book! Why do booms and busts happen during the deployment of some technologies and not others? The work looks deeply at many memorable episodes of new technologies – electric lighting, vulcanized rubber, insulin, telephony, radio and television, electronic commerce, and much more. The authors bring accessible and penetrating insight to the economics, and illustrate with rich examples. It is a joy to read the stories and analysis. Highly recommended!"—Shane Greenstein, Martin Marshall Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School"When is a technology boom actually a bubble? In Bubbles and Crashes authors Goldfarb and Kirsch deliver a nuanced guide to answering this question. Based on the careful examination of 88 important innovations—ranging from the electric light to the World Wide Web—they demonstrate the importance of pure-play investment opportunities, naive investors, and powerful narratives in allowing runaway speculation that overwhelms the moderating forces of imitation, entry, and competition. This is must reading for anyone interested in how new technologies develop, how they are perceived when they first occur, and how some generate clear bubbles."—Richard Rumelt, Professor Emeritus, UCLA Anderson"Goldfarb and Kirsch provide an interesting take on some factors that facilitate the development and bursting of bubbles in technology industries...Readers may particularly appreciate the discussion on competition and policy...Practitioners, graduate students, and researchers may benefit by reading this book. Highly recommended."––S. R. Sisodiya, CHOICETable of ContentsIntroduction 1. Bubbles and Non-Bubbles Across Time 2. Uncertainty and Narratives 3. Novices, Naïfs, and Biases 4. Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Handbook on the Economic Complexity of

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis comprehensive and innovative Handbook applies the tools of the economics of complexity to analyse the causes and effects of technological and structural change. It grafts the intuitions of the economics of complexity into the tradition of analysis based upon the Schumpeterian and Marshallian legacies.Trade Review’The editor of this Handbook, Cristiano Antonelli, is to commended for the high quality of the group of authors he has assembled for this project. They provide excellent coverage of the various areas within the field, covering complexity of innovation, complexity of knowledge, complexity of structural change and development, and lessons and implications for economic policy. This is an important and evolving topic, and this book captures the cutting edge of research on it, particularly in connection with the broader idea of economic complexity.’ -- J. Barkley Rosser, Jr., James Madison University, US’My overall impression of the handbook is very favourable. It gives a broad overview of the different topics addressed by complexity economics, especially with regard to innovation and knowledge management. Knowledge and innovation are treated as the emergent properties of a system in which heterogeneous actors interact in different ways at different levels: the firm (meso), the individual (micro), and society (macro). Both Antonelli s and Bonaccorsi's chapters are treasure troves of concepts and ideas, although not necessarily for the complexity novice. Lane's chapter, however, provides an excellent introduction. . . For researchers in the field of economics and those that are interested in 'complexity in the real world', this handbook provides ample discussion and research roads ahead.’ -- Andreas Ligtvoet, Science and Public Policy’Antonelli's handbook is an impressive compendium of theoretical approaches to complexity in economics that has emerged during the last two decades. . . this handbook is an amazing excursus on the state of the art of complexity thinking in the economics of technological change. Not only did the compendium reinforce the achievements of other theory textbooks in this field; it also paves the way for a “normalisation” of complexity in economics. It strongly defends the advantage of operationalization and applied research in economics and touches upon important policy implications. Therefore, it is a must-read both for the scientist and for the policy researcher in the field of innovation and technological change.’ -- Manfred Paier, Journal of Artificial Societies and Social SimulationTable of ContentsContents: PART I: INTRODUCTION 1. Book SynopsisThis unique and informative book highlights the relationship between crisis, innovation, and sustainable development, and discusses the necessary conditions required to seize the ecological opportunity.Trade ReviewThis book talks about a genuine greening of the economy: from the most theoretical aspects, e.g. the genealogy of ecological economics, to the most practical. The two most prominent conclusions are, for me: this greening cannot be achieved by companies alone, but can only be the result of different kinds of innovation: technological, organizational, institutional and lifestyle changes. The changes must be implemented at all levels, from the firm to international governance. - Dominique Bourg, University of Lausanne, Switzerland Crisis, Innovation and Sustainable Development is a fascinating exploration at the frontiers of economics and ecology. It combines topical surveys of current work with deep reflection on the repressed role of nature in the history of economics. Book SynopsisSince the beginning of the 1990s, the supremacy of `Old World’ countries (France and Italy) in the international wine market has been challenged by new players, such as Australia, Argentina, Chile and South Africa, which are recording stunning performances in terms both of export volume and value.Trade Review'This book takes a fresh look at the innovations that have changed the global wine sector, presenting established thinking in a new light. Building on the world's knowledge base in wine production, the book encourages novel thinking for both Old World and New World producers. The content is topical, current and well written. This is a must-read for anyone with an interest in wine innovation. --Sakkie Pretorius, The Australian Wine Research Institute'This excellent book emerges out of the project ''Innovation and Globalization in the Wine Sector: An International Comparison between Argentina, Chile, Italy and South Africa''. The authors provide a fresh perspective on innovation and technological capabilities in the wine industry, as well as an insightful account of the new growth trajectories of this industry in different contexts. . . this theoretically informed and empirically rich collection has clearly succeeded in highlighting some of the key features of innovation and technological catching-up in the wine industry in different countries. . . Book SynopsisIt grounds its analysis in innovation theory and a examination of patent law and prosecution, incorporating the uncertainty of patent law’s impact on welfare at a detailed level, dynamic changes, the skewed nature of patent value and the difficulty of textually capturing patent concepts.Trade Review’In this book, Alex Stack raises and explores critically important questions with respect to this body of experience: When is international patent law cooperation and harmonization welfare-enhancing? What is the role of international institutions - WIPO and the WTO - in furthering such harmonization? Stack explores these questions from a global welfarist, rationalist perspective. Using tools from new institutional economics, he explores design implications for international institutions, focusing on WIPO and the WTO, analyzing grounds for international cooperation as collective action problems and applying historical, political and transaction cost analysis. . . This book provides a subtle, insightful, and original analysis of the evolution of institutional arrangements for the international harmonization of patent laws that will be of immense value to scholars and practitioners involved in international harmonization efforts in intellectual property and cognate areas of commercial law. It will surely quickly become accepted as the seminal reference work in these fields.’ -- - From the foreword by Michael Trebilcock, University of Toronto, CanadaFor the newcomer to intellectual property, this book is a wonderful introduction to global innovation policy debates and the difficulties in identifying optimal patent strategies. For those in the field, the volume provides an engaging examination of the complex interactions among heterogeneous national priorities, demands for an efficient environment for global trade in knowledge-intensive assets, and the capabilities of various international institutions - particularly WIPO and the WTO - to foster the development of, and administer, sound international patent policy.’ -- Rochelle Dreyfuss, New York University, School of LawTable of ContentsContents: Foreword Introduction Part I: Welfare-Enhancing Harmonization 1. Book SynopsisThe government documents included in this book are comprised of reports and testimonies from June 2018 to September 2018 on research and development in the United States. The first report examines research and development projects started from 2010 through 2017 on advanced fossil energy. For over 100 years, three fossil fuel sources -- coal, oil and natural gas -- have made up at least 80% of total US energy consumption. While fossil fuels are associated with some negative environmental impacts - such as carbon dioxide emissions, the predominance of coal, oil and natural gas is likely to continue into the future. The second report focuses on considerations for maintaining US competitiveness in Quantum Computing, Synthetic Biology and other potentially transformational research advances. Federal support in such areas can accelerate innovation and drive technological advances and promote US competitiveness in the global economy. The third and final report focuses on additional actions needed to improve licensing of patented laboratory inventions. The GAO was asked to review agency practices for managing inventions developed at federal labs, with a particular focus on patent licensing. This report examines the challenges in licensing patents and steps take to address and report them.Table of ContentsFor more information, please visit our website at:https://novapublishers.com/shop/advanced-fossil-energy-licensing-of-patented-laboratory-inventions-and-considerations-for-maintaining-us-competitiveness-in-potentially-transformational-research-areas/

Book SynopsisIn the late winter and early spring of 1692, residents of Salem Village, Massachusetts, began to suffer from strange physical and mental maladies. The randomness of the victims, and unusual symptoms that were seldom duplicated, led residents to suspect an otherworldly menace. Their suspicions and fears eventually prompted the infamous Salem Witch Trials. While most historians have concentrated their efforts on the accused, Laurie Winn Carlson, A Fever in Salem focuses on the afflicted. What were the characteristics of a typical victim? Why did the symptoms occur when and where they did? What natural explanation could be given for symptoms that included hallucinations, convulsions, and psychosis, often resulting in death? Ms. Carlson offers an innovative, well-grounded explanation of witchcraft’s link to organic illness. Systematically comparing the symptoms recorded in colonial diaries and court records to those of the encephalitis epidemic in the early twentieth century, she argues convincingly that the victims suffered from the same disease, and she offers persuasive evidence for organic explanations of other witchcraft victims throughout New England as well as in Europe. A Fever in Salem is a provocative reinterpretation of one of America’s strangest moments, and a refreshing departure from widely accepted Freudian explanations of witchcraft persecution.Trade ReviewCarlson turns to tackle a phenomenon that has engrossed and frightened generations. -- Barbara Lloyd McMichael * The Seattle Times *A fascinating, refreshing reassessment of one of the most bizarre episodes in American history. * The A-List *What an intriguing hypothesis! -- Laurie Garrett, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer; author of I Heard the Sirens ScreamThis book will send historians and epidemiologists scurrying back to the drawing board. -- Katrina L.
