World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Underwater Labriform-swimming Robot
Book SynopsisThis book provides a simplified description of how to design an underwater swimming robot, inspired by the mechanism of the Labriform mode of fish. This style of swimming depends on the pectoral fins only as a main locomotor for movement. A unique model with fins having a concave shape allows the highest thrust force to be achieved during the power period and the lowest drag force during the recovery period, especially if the velocity values between the powering and recovery periods are manipulated.Besides the ability to swim quickly, the proposed model was also inspired by a method of maneuvering based on the principle of differential drive for two-wheel mobile robot, achieving the minimum turning radius by controlling the speed of the rowing fins. Also, by applying the technique of the diving model used by gliders, the robot achieves underwater gliding by changing the center of the body's mass. Thus, the robot obtains the ability to dive and float in a manner similar to the Sawtooth wave. All the mentioned tasks were conducted via laboratory experiments and proven to be both effective and efficient.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Are There Laws Of Innovation?
Book SynopsisBeyond real GDP, innovative capacity is an important indicator of the economic strength of a nation. By studying innovative capacity and other indicators of success in innovation across the Group-of-Seven (G7) Countries, the East Asian Newly Industrialised Economies (EANIEs) and Mainland China, this book will systematically establish a positive relationship between innovation outputs and inputs of different economies. In doing so, it seeks to answer the question — are there laws of innovation? It seeks to identify the determinants of innovation at the economy-wide level, ascertain whether these determinants are similar across different economies, and find suitable metrics for comparing relative success in innovation across different economies. It concludes that innovation, rather than being a stroke of good fortune, comes from research and development activities conducted over a long period of time, and sheds light on future trends and areas for further research.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Norbert Wiener: A Mathematician Among Engineers
Book SynopsisNorbert Wiener (1894-1964) is well known by the general public as the founder of Cybernetics, by mathematicians as one of the first north-American mathematicians who win international prestige — as the person who formalized Brownian motion, solved the Zaremba problem and was the author of two seminal papers devoted to Generalized Harmonic Analysis and Tauberian Theorems — and by engineers as the person who proposed much of the Fourier analysis used by them and contributed to the foundation of the statistical theory of communication — which includes the use of wave filter theory, information theory and prediction theory in control and communications as well as the automation of all types of electronic devices.Wiener's research, which was frequently motivated by physics, engineering, or biology, was a clever mixture of Fourier analysis and probability theory. His contributions to electronics through his work on filtering (that is, the separation of noise from a message), and the theory of prediction made him very valuable to electronics engineering. In addition, Wiener addressed many other topics, including the formalization of the Brownian motion, ergodic theory, wave filter theory, and information theory. Taking all these ingredients together, he ventured to create a new scientific paradigm: cybernetics. This book contains a detailed explanation of Wiener's life, his many colleagues, and the historical context in which he lived, as well as Wiener's work. It also contains a large appendix about 'Wiener, Shannon, and the rise of a Digital World'. The main focus of the book is on Wiener's work related to electrical and electronic engineering and the way he used his mathematics to create the main concepts and techniques of the statistical theory of communication. In particular, the author presents Wiener surrounded by the engineers that worked at MIT with whom he maintained strong contact. It was in this atmosphere that information theory arose, and Wiener was a main influence on the people who developed that theory.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Idea Chase, The: Seven Principles For
Book Synopsis'Breakthrough' innovation is often difficult to achieve. Great ideas hide in places that are not obvious. They often first appear as bits and pieces of fragmented ideas rather than something fully revealed. In addition, the story behind chasing ideas is as elusive as the ideas themselves. Some say that breakthrough innovation is magical, unlearnable, or inborn. It is a wonderful fairy tale of inspiration. However, evidence does not fully support the 'inspiration' hypothesis. A successful Idea Chase is a combination of inspiration and disciplined hard work. These important ingredients cannot be separated, they work together to reveal something that is unseen by others. Artists, authors, musicians, as well as leaders of some of the most innovative organizations have mastered this approach. It is a skill that can be described, developed, and managed. As described in this book, the story of innovation is built on seven key principles and a toolbox of supporting methods: Be Ambitious, Create Chemistry, Define Roles and Responsibilities, Build Trust, Lean on Data, Show Perseverance, and Embrace Sacrifice. This story is told through the experiences and examples of innovative organizations and extraordinary people that have combined the magic of inspiration with the muscle of discipline to achieve the impossible.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Elegant Automation: Robotic Analysis Of Chaotic
Book SynopsisThis book was mostly written by a machine that was programmed to search a system of equations for chaotic solutions, simplify the equations to the extent possible, analyze the behavior, produce figures, and write the accompanying text. The equations are coupled autonomous ordinary differential equations with three variables and at least one nonlinearity. Fifty simple systems are included. Some are old and familiar; others are relatively new and unknown. They are chosen to illustrate by simple example most of dynamical behaviors that can occur in low-dimensional chaotic systems. There is no substitute for the thrill and insight of seeing the solution of a simple equation unfold as the trajectory wanders in real time across your computer screen using a program of your own making. A goal of this book is to inspire and delight as well as to teach. It provides a wealth of examples ripe for further study and extension, and it offers a glimpse of a future when artificial intelligence supplants many of the mundane tasks that accompany dynamical systems research and becomes a true and tireless collaborator.

Springer Verlag, Singapore The Efficiency and Creativity of Product
Book SynopsisThis is the first book that comprehensively describes the history of the game software industry in Japan. A major objective here is to identify the key determinants of the emergence of the business, the maturing of the market, and the changes brought about by innovations, based on the history of the Japanese industry. To date, similar books have focused only on particular topics of the game software industry, such as the success of Nintendo and Sony and the uniqueness of the Japanese industry. There are no books that interpret the development process of this industry from the point of view of innovation. To fully understand the business and derive insightful lessons from it, however, requires a careful and thorough examination of its development process. Currently, many companies aim to improve efficiency by using information and communications technology (ICT), but it is difficult to maintain a balance between the pursuit of efficiency and the encouragement of creativity. In the case of Japan’s game software industry, firms have pursued higher efficiency in product development to build competitive advantage, resulting in a low rate of radical innovation and causing the slow growth of the industry. In certain situations, the development activities that target the creation of new products may, in themselves, hinder the creation of truly new products. This book conceptualizes this phenomenon as a “development productivity dilemma” and clarifies the mechanisms behind it. The dilemma, like the productivity dilemma in the manufacturing industry, evokes a certain innovation pattern and prevents potential growth. Understanding the lessons from the game software business presented in this book, managers, researchers, and policymakers can gain insight into the mechanisms leading to industrial maturity and clues to avoid the development productivity dilemma.Table of ContentsCh1. A fundamental dilemma: efficiency versus creativity.- Ch2. Analytical framework and the research design: Innovation pattern and evolution of industry.- Ch3. The origins of the game software business in Japan: the movement till 1970’s.- Ch4. Creating New Demand: the start-up of the new industry in early 1980s.- Ch5. World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Cooperative Innovation: Science And Technology
Book SynopsisResearch cooperation in a nation is a fundamental key to national competitiveness in technology that supports growth in a national economy. To fully understand why some nations are more successful in innovation than others, one must examine the structure and process of knowledge creation and use — the Science & Technology policy of a nation.National innovation requires progress both in Science & Technology, and also in economy. Research cooperation for innovation is necessary, since science, technology, and production are performed in different sectors of a nation. Universities conduct research science, and science discovers nature. Governments support most of the research in universities, and therefore are the principal sponsors of science. Industry develops most technology and commercializes technology into economically useful products/services. The structure and process of knowledge in a nation thus requires (1) creation of knowledge in science, (2) translation of science into technology, and (3) design of technology into commercialization of utility. At a national level, innovation is thus a complicated concept — proposing a need to identify the proper ways that government-university-industry can cooperate to advance knowledge and economically benefit from innovation. Special programs in Science & Technology policy that have proven beneficial in fostering research cooperation for national competitiveness will be covered in this book.Cooperative Innovation: Science & Technology Policy helps readers understand a practical science & technology policy for a nation. Its contents are particularly useful for government administrators of research, industrial research directors, university research directors, and students of science & technology policy.

Pan Stanford Publishing Pte Ltd Innovation Crisis: Successes, Pitfalls, and
Book SynopsisWhat has gone wrong in Japan that has led to innovation crisis? Prof. Eiichi Yamaguchi has been committed to answer this question, and his quest has spanned several years and academic disciplines. Initially it appeared as if it had no context, but when he put the pieces together, he realized that it was actually one story. This book is a summary of his research over the last 20 years, especially after he moved out of the field of physics, to which he had devoted 21 years. He felt that it was essential for him to do his bit to save this sinking ship, or it would be disrespectful to the future generation. The book integrates his research on innovation policy, innovation theory, and trans-science. It begins with a detailed story of the innovation of blue LEDs, for which three Japanese scientists received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014. It describes the current innovation and science crises in Japan and presents evidence that the strong international competitiveness of science-based industries in the United States is a result of the invention of the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) system. It discusses a new theory of innovation structures, showing the error in Clayton M. Christensen’s argument of “disruptive innovation.” It also proposes a new concept for “paradigm disruptive innovation,” emphasizing that abduction and transilience are essential factors for accomplishing it and that their decline has led to the innovation crisis in Japan. Finally, it analyzes the future vision of the innovation ecosystem, which promotes abduction and transilience, for scientists to develop new science-based industries.Trade Review"This book explores the path of Japanese innovation from the 1950s through the 1990s, a period when disruptive research took place within academia and other research institutions. These early triumphs included the work of Hiroshi Amano in gallium nitride crystals, the designing of the Intel 4004 and Intel 8080 microprocessors by Masatoshi Shima, and the development of infrared semiconductor laser by Takashi Matsuoka. The book discovers that innovations in Japan would ultimately stall as conservative valuation-based criteria for research projects generally displace research efforts that can often be disruptive. It explores the philosophy underpinning the slowdown in innovation and the failure to continue developing disruptive technologies in a manner similar to those in the United States. It justifies why innovation must be driven by interactions between researchers and lay users and the focus of institutional research should shift to innovative entrepreneurial research designed specifically to discontinue existing paradigms and promote new technologies." - Prof. S.
