teNeues Publishing UK Ltd Elliott Erwitt’s New York
Book SynopsisThere are many coffee table books dedicated to New York, but certainly none like this one. With New York, the photography legend Elliott Erwitt pays a monochromatic tribute to his hometown metropolis, creating a photo book that can unquestionably be classified as a work with historical significance. The native Parisian immigrated to the USA in 1939 and settled in the Big Apple in 1948. Since then, the camera has been his constant companion as he wandered through the streets of the global city. In this revised edition, Erwitt presents compelling black and white photographs spanning his entire career. On 16 new pages, readers are given a first-time glimpse into previously unreleased images from the 1950s and 60s, allowing them to immerse themselves in a New York of days long past. A touch of nostalgia is guaranteed. The photo book perfectly reflects New York and its soul. Celebrities stand alongside everyday New Yorkers, everyday moments shape contemporary history in a cheerful and sometimes slightly quirky manner, characteristic of Erwitt's work. It's no wonder he is considered one of the best street photographers in the world. His images are not only vivid and authentic, but are also characterised by a special irony derived from the everyday situations they originate from. Circa Press Boudoir
Book SynopsisIfa Brand never felt satisfied as a model. The dissatisfaction stemmed from not being able to represent her true identity: 'I fell “between styles”: alternative but not alternative enough; fetish but not in a typical sense. I also disliked photographers telling me how I should look, pose, behave; telling me no to red lips, no to precious lingerie and all the things I loved.’ In 2017, she decided to go her own way. She saw photography as an opportunity to be her own creative director, to follow her own storylines, and to explore her own vision of sensuality, eroticism and fetish. Hers is a quest for personal empowerment through the art of self-portraiture: ‘I find it very important to present a strong, independent woman. There needs to be an element of being untouchable. The message to the viewer is: yes you can look but solely on my terms.’

Elemental Music Records Jazz Images By William Claxton
Book Synopsis"The photographs of William Claxton define the essence of cool." - Jason Ankeny (AllMusic) "Claxton's innovative choices and airy style, which he called 'jazz for your eyes', worked sublimely to document and promote the rise of trumpeter and singer Chet Baker, especially." - Howard Mandel Born in Pasadena, California, photographer William Claxton (1927-2008) is best known for his dozens of splendid portraits of jazz stars (especially those of Chet Baker, of whom he made the first professional photos) and Hollywood stars (such as his friend Steve McQueen). In 1952, while shooting Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker at the Haig Club, he met Richard Bock, founder of Pacific Jazz, who quickly hired him as art director and house photographer. During his time at the label, Claxton snapped and designed album covers at a rate of roughly one per week, in the process establishing the visual identity of the West Coast jazz movement. Where previous jazz photographers captured their subjects in the dark, smoky environs of nightclubs, Claxton capitalised on the sun and surf of southern California, posing artists in unorthodox outdoor settings to represent a new era in the music's continued evolution. Claxton's images graced the covers of numerous music albums, and his work regularly appeared in such magazines as Life, Paris Match and Vogue. Claxton wrote 13 books, held dozens of exhibitions of his photographs around the world, and won numerous photography awards. This book presents a selection of more than 150 superb images by the great photographer. Among the multiple artists portrayed are Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, Art Blakey, Clifford Brown, Dave Brubeck, Ray Charles, Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Wes Montgomery, Lee Morgan, Art Pepper, Sonny Rollins, Dinah Washington, and Muddy Waters. Text in English, with an introduction in English, French and Spanish.

Blurring Books Lifeguard Towers: Miami
Book SynopsisNYC-based photographer Tommy Kwak brings Miami Beach to lifeAfter the destruction of Hurricane Andrew on Miami Beach in 1992, the lifeguard towers were commissioned to be redesigned in vibrant fashion to uplift the spirits of the town. In the tradition of the Becher's water tower series, this book of Tommy Kwak's photographs methodically examines the 30+ iconic towers that have become symbols of South Florida's revitalization. This award-winning series of photographs utilizes similar framing and long exposures to produce minimal sky and sea backdrops in order to highlight the traits of each tower, inviting the reader to appreciate and compare the electric color palettes and eccentric forms. This body of work shows Tommy's distinct approach recognizable by the composition of the pictures, sophisticated usage of the angles, and manipulation of light, shadow, and colors. Tommy's style of photography celebrates a kind of ephemeral beauty, and at the same time transforms these entities into more graphic forms, bringing a fresh perspective on the lifeguard towers of Miami Beach.

Merrell Publishers Ltd Hunting with Eagles: In the Realm of the
Book SynopsisKazakh nomads have been grazing their livestock near the Altai Mountains in western Mongolia for many hundreds of years. Here, in this desolate landscape, where temperatures plummet to minus 40 degrees Celsius in winter, live the last of the men who use eagles to hunt on horseback. Rugged, formidable, proud, the golden eagles share the same qualities as the men with whom they ride. Only the toughest survive here. Fascinated by the special bond that develops between hunter and eagle, award-winning photographer Palani Mohan has spent the last few years documenting the burkitshi, as the hunters are known in Kazakh. As Mohan explains in his introduction to a collection of breathtaking duotone images, this is a culture under threat. There are no more than 50 to 60 'true' hunters left, and each winter claims a few more. Having taken a pup from the nest, given it pride of place in their home and trained it, all hunters describe the eagle as part of their family. With its massive wingspan, sharp eyesight and powerful, flesh-tearing beak and talons, the golden eagle is the perfect predator. Its usual prey, fox, provides a welcome meal for the hunter's family, while the pelt can be made into warm clothing. Mohan's photographs of the stark landscape, the isolation of the hunt, and most of all the trusting relationship between man and bird, convey the huge importance that the eagle plays in the lives of the last remaining Kazakh hunters. This is an enthralling, timely record of these noble men and their majestic eagles in an unforgiving part of the planet. AUTHOR: Indian born, Australian raised Palani Mohan is an award-winning photographer whose work has been featured in many international publications, including National Geographic, Stern, Geo, the New York Times, Timeand Newsweek. He has previously published four books, including 'Hidden Faces of India' (2002) and 'Vanishing Giants: Elephants of Asia' (2008). He currently lives in Hong Kong. SELLING POINTS: . Getty Trust Publications Herb Ritts – L.A Style
Book SynopsisThis is a stunning collection of photographs - many never before published - celebrating the remarkable talent of Herb Ritts. "Herb Ritts" traces the life and career of the iconic photographer through a compelling selection of both renowned and previously unpublished, photographs and two insightful essays. Herb Ritts (1952-2002) was a Los Angeles-based photographer who established an international reputation for distinctive images of fashion models, nudes, and celebrity portraits. During the 1980s and 1990s, Ritts was sought out by leading fashion designers such as Armani, Gianfranco Ferre, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Valentino, and Versace, as well as magazine editors from "GQ", "Rolling Stone", and "Vanity Fair", among others, to lend glamour to their products and layouts. Largely self-taught, Ritts developed his own style, one that often made use of the California light and landscape and helped to separate his work from his New York-based peers. From the late 1970s until his untimely death from AIDS in 2002, Ritts' ability to create photographs that successfully bridged the gap between art and commerce was not only a testament to the power of his imagination and technical skill, but also marked the synergistic union between art, popular culture, and business that followed in the wake of the Pop Art movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

David Zwirner William Eggleston: The Outlands, Selected Works
Book SynopsisThe Outlands, a series of photographs taken by Eggleston between 1969 and 1974, establishes the groundbreaking visual themes and lexicon that the artist would continue to develop for decades to come. The work offers a journey through the mythic and evolving American South, seen through the artist’s lens: vibrant colors and a profound sense of nostalgia echo throughout Eggleston’s breathtaking oeuvre. His motifs of signage, cars, and roadside scenes create an iconography of American vistas that inspired a generation of photographers. With its in-depth selection of unforgettable images - a wood-paneled station wagon, doors flung open, parked in an expansive rural setting; the artist’s grandmother in the moody interior of their family’s Sumner, Mississippi home - The Outlands is emblematic of Eggleston’s dynamic, experimental practice. The breadth of work reenergizes his iconic landscapes and forms a new perspective of the American South in transition. Accompanying the ninety brilliant Kodachrome images and details, a literary, fictional text by the critically acclaimed author Rachel Kushner imagines a story of hitchhikers trekking through the Deep South. New scholarship by Robert Slifkin reframes the art-historical significance of Eggleston’s oeuvre, proposing affinities with work by Marcel Duchamp, Dan Graham, Jasper Johns, and Robert Smithson. A foreword by William Eggleston III offers important insights into the process of selecting and sequencing this series of images.

Getty Trust Publications Imogen Cunningham - A Retrospective
Book SynopsisThoroughly researched and beautifully produced, this catalogue complements the first comprehensive retrospective in the United States of Imogen Cunningham's work in over thirty-five years. Celebrated American artist Imogen Cunningham (1883-1976) enjoyed a long career as a photographer, creating a large and diverse body of work that underscored her unique vision, versatility, and commitment to the medium. An early feminist and inspiration to future generations, Cunningham intensely engaged with Pictorialism and Modernism; genres of portraiture, landscape, the nude, still life, and street photography; and themes such as flora, dancers and music, hands, and the elderly. Organized chronologically, this volume explores the full range of the artist's life and career. It contains nearly two hundred color images of Cunningham's elegant, poignant, and groundbreaking photographs, both renowned and lesser known, including several that have not been published previously. Essays draw on primary sources at the Imogen Cunningham Trust, the Cunningham papers at the Archives of American Art, and contributing author Susan Ehrens's personal interviews with the artist's associates, incorporating a selection of letters, family albums, and other intimate materials to enrich readers' understanding of Cunningham's motivations and work. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center September 15, 2020, to January 10, 2021 and at the Seattle Art Museum, February 11 to May 23, 2021.Trade Review"A rare complete picture of Cunningham's oeuvre."-Alex Greenberger, ARTnews; ;"This retrospective . . . remind[s] us what a beloved, tough, industrious, and supremely independent photographer and person Cunningham was." Richard B. Woodward Collector Daily;;"The scholarly research that informs the text offers many surprises." Peggy Roalf DART: Design Arts Daily ;;"Few women chose to become photographers at the beginning of the 20th century, yet Cunningham's images-from female nudes to Hollywood portraits-smoothed the way for countless female artists that followed." The Guardian ;;"With "Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective" (Getty, 245 pages, $50), editor Paul Martineau means to fix Cunningham's place in the firmament of great 20th-century American photographers. For over 70 years, Cunningham (1883-1976) innovated and excelled in many photographic genres. Her portraits, a reviewer in 1913 said, are "a portrayal of the sitter's personality, spirituality-soul, if you will-which gives the beholder a sense of actual presence." While homebound taking care of her three young boys she photographed the plants in her garden, and what was said about her portraits also applies to her photographs of flora. She is one of the few to take successful nudes of both women and men. The book includes her intense "Martha Graham, Dancer" (1931), her celebrated "Magnolia Blossom" (1925) and the still startling nude "Triangles" (1928)." William Meyers Wall Street Journal ;;"This standout offering impresses on every page." Publishers Weekly ;;"These days, high modernism can sometimes look as distant as a faraway star, a place of heedless optimism and tranquil contemplation. For that very reason, though, the images can be tonic, lowering one's blood pressure as they induce concentration of sight. Imogen Cunningham took up a camera at the dawn of the 20th century, when few women were working in the field, and made pictures for nearly seven decades. She took every sort of photo; portraits, street scenes and landscapes all figure brilliantly in her body of work. What she did best, though, was to convey the sensual impact of harmonious forms, finding these especially in nudes, both male and female, and in the vegetable kingdom. Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective, by Paul Martineau, displays her ecstatic studies of flowers-lilies, tuberoses, magnolias-seen in extreme close-up as if they were worlds in themselves, and juxtaposes them with languorous sprawled bodies that become dunes and arroyos. She can turn her eye with similar entrancement to ceramics, textiles, the organically flowing wire sculptures of Ruth Asawa, and even industrial structures. She has never been granted anywhere near the attention accorded her counterpart and contemporary Edward Weston, but revision is clearly in order." Luc Sante The New York Times Book Review ;;"Imogen Cunningham's name may not come immediately to mind when you think about the great American photographers, but a new book, the catalog for a planned but temporarily postponed exhibition at LA's J. Paul Getty Museum, could make you think again. . . . Paul Martineau's Imogen Cunningham: A Retrospective (Getty) makes it very clear that she belongs in the photo pantheon alongside her Bay Area colleagues Edward Weston and Dorothea Lange." Silvana Herbert List
Book SynopsisWith this book we invite the reader to discover List's multi-faceted work, by exploring many masterpieces and some lesser known work side by side. The elusive oeuvre of the German photographer Herbert List is hard to categorise. He worked in almost every genre that photography has to offer: architecture, still life, street-photography, portraiture, documentation and cataloguing. Yet he also blurred the demarcation between those fields: architectural shots seem like composed still lifes or surreal compositions, documentation of the Greek sculpture or African artefacts borders on portraiture, and when capturing the classical beauty of the male physique, one does not quite know if we look at painstakingly composed arrangements or a private photo-diary, shot spontaneously. With this book we invite the reader to discover List's multifaceted work, by exploring many masterpieces and some lesser known work side by side. The result is a visual journey leading from enigmatic night shots, surreal and dark compositions, to the Mediterranean sunlight on the bodies of young men and the ruins of ancient Greece. Text in English, Italian and French.

The Ice Plant Gerry Johansson Maine
Book SynopsisFrom Augusta to Bristol, Brunswick and beyond, Johansson's chronicle of Maine combines humor and emotion with a sense of place In 2023, Swedish photographer Gerry Johansson (born 1945) roamed the state of Maine with a Rolleiflex, curious to make new pictures in a region of America he first encountered in the work of Paul Strand five decades agohe found Strand's views of New England boring at the timeand also wondering, Why is American photography so focused on the west? Johansson's Maine echoes the formal restraint of his earlier books, notably American Winter, Spanish Summer, Meloni Meloni and Pontiac, sequencing nearly 200 black-and-white duotones alphabetically by their oddly poetic Northeastern town names (Bath, Friendship, Purgatory, etc). Somehow, none of the Maine pictures draws more attention than any other, and the flawless and playful compositions never seem to repeat. As in all of Johansson's work, endlessly inventive arrangements of architecture and landscape orient the viewer in a specific geographic and cultural place while generously sharing his way of seeing, walking and thinking with a camera.

Steidl Publishers Santu Mofokeng: The Black Photo Album / Look at
Book SynopsisThis book is a reproduction of an artwork, bearing the same title, by Santu Mofokeng. The work, which is as much a research project as it is a work of art, is comprised of private photographs collected, scanned, and retouched over a number of years by the artist. Each of the original images were commissioned by urban black working and middle-class families in South Africa between 1890 and 1950, a time when the government was entrenching its infamous policies towards those designated as “natives.” Painterly in style, the images evoke the artifices of Victorian photography and reveal something about how the people captured within the frame imagined themselves, asking meditative questions on the meaning of African imagery: “Who were these people?,” “What were their aspirations?,” “Are these images evidence of mental colonization or did they serve to challenge prevailing images of ‘The African’ in the western world?” In this work Mofokeng thus analyses the sensibilities, aspirations and self-image of the urban black population in South Africa and its desire for representation and social recognition in times of colonial rule and suppression. This book contains the complete sequence of slides with reproduced photographs and Mofokeng’s own texts. The Black Photo Album / Look at Me: 1890-1950 also features selections from Mofokeng’s field notes and the original, unretouched photographs, published for the first time.

Aperture Tim Davis: I'm Looking Through You
Book SynopsisI’m Looking Through You is an expansive, visual poem celebrating the glamorous surface of Los Angeles and its reach. Animating Davis's wry observations and mesmerizing, color-pop geometry of the images is his decades-long gimlet-eyed meditation on making pictures. As photographer and writer Tim Davis states, “The camera is a machine that sees only surfaces. The world casts its spell, and the camera gobbles up its glamour, uncritically, with pure certainty, assuming there is nothing underneath.” Davis’s keenly observational images, interspersed with a selection of his writings on the medium—the joys and pitfalls of camera seeing—solidify I’m Looking Through You as an unabashed celebration of photography.Trade Review“Davis’s book is a timely reminder of the breathtaking pleasure one can experience in approaching the world with sincere curiosity, eyes wide open, a camera in hand.” —British Journal of Photography “A kaleidoscopic visual record of everyday street encounters tinged with a sense of otherworldly strangeness.” —Financial Times

Aperture Justine Kurland: Girl Pictures
Book SynopsisThe North American frontier is an enduring symbol of romance, rebellion, escape, and freedom. At the same time, it’s a profoundly masculine myth—cowboys, outlaws, Beat poets. Photographer Justine Kurland reclaimed this space in her now-iconic series of images of teenage girls, taken between 1997 and 2002 on the road in the American wilderness. “I staged the girls as a standing army of teenaged runaways in resistance to patriarchal ideals,” says Kurland. She portrays the girls as fearless and free, tender and fierce. They hunt and explore, braid each other’s hair, and swim in sun-dappled watering holes—paying no mind to the camera (or the viewer). Their world is at once lawless and utopian, a frontier Eden in the wild spaces just outside of suburban infrastructure and ideas. Twenty years on, the series still resonates, published here in its entirety and including newly discovered, unpublished images.
