Damiani ONYX
Book Synopsis'[a] glimmering monograph, which celebrates the performance and artistry of its dancers.' - Vanity Fair 'This book will serve as a starting point for conversations around the Black female body with Raquel at the forefront of provocative image-making' - Aesthetica 'By focusing on the performers themselves, the series elevates the images from straight reportage to curated and highly intentional... Raquel’s captivating imagery portrays the empowerment and inclusivity in strip clubs that society has tended to ignore.'- Creative Review In ONYX, photographer Adrienne Raquel explores the intensity and escapism of the nightclub experience, documenting the power of the performers at Houston’s famed Club Onyx. Raquel’s photography is usually editorial, with high-power celebrities as her subjects. Her work has broken glass ceilings for Black female photographers. Now, for this passion project commissioned by Fotografiska New York, she has turned her lens towards a community of underrepresented artists in her hometown. At Club Onyx, strippers step on stage displaying their bodies, strength, and seduction, but there’s a virtue to this particular space. “They don’t get naked” is a common idiom to describe the club’s ambiance. Performers there take the word “stripper,” and negotiate what that means to them, on their own terms. Raquel captures elements of southern strip culture and the power of these performers with her signature glossy photographic style. From powerful images of the dancers mid-movement to detailed shots and intimate portraits, Raquel’s striking images put the divine beauty and compelling energy that enlivens Houston’s nightlife on full display. She also takes viewers behind the scenes, giving us a window into the community the dancers have built in the privacy of the locker room. There they prepare for the evening together before moving to the stage, each dancer in her moment. Uniting their star power to conquer one customer at a time, dancers continue into the early morning, performing and collecting bills. ONYX displays the empowerment and inclusivity in strip clubs that society has ignored. As captured by Raquel, the night club experience is revealed with layered meaning — granting the chance for these performers to be seen as elevated as the culture they influence.

Damiani GSM: All Photographs shot on iPhone
Book SynopsisGSM - All photography shot on iPhone is the ultimate photo book entirely shot on an iPhone by French fashion photographer and director Axel Morin. Through his eye as an artist, Axel has developed a poetic storytelling of all the micro-narratives of the city, capturing the very essence of it. Since the beginning of this series initiated in 2014, several generations of iPhone have been used by Morin, who captured these city snapshots. The tones, the lines, the lights follow one another and answer each other in a cinematographic montage, presenting a modern and delicate world-city. This book is an archive of our time, made with the tool we always carry with us, which have become an extension of ourselves. The images are not anticipated or constructed, they are the ones that emerge from the urban monotony and are collected by the phone. The very graphic composition of the photographs draw from the background of Morin as a painter, and the association of lines and colors plunge us into a reenchanted everyday life.

Damiani Danny Lyon Junk
Book SynopsisLyon's Junk: America in Ruins is a book of pictures of 86 American cars, mostly from the 1950s and 1960s, made in the junkyards of the western United States. When he was 21, Lyon's father passed on to him a 1953 Oldsmobile. He discovered the ecstasy of speeding along Georgia highways during the civil rights movement, with red dirt fields of peanuts and cotton flying by. In the excitement of driving, he realized his own mortality. Lyon's Junk: America in Ruins is a book of pictures of 86 American cars, mostly from the 1950s and 1960s, made in the junkyards of the western United States. The pictures were taken in Nebraska, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Oklahoma. This is a work of pure visual photography. The premise behind the work is that many thingssculptures, monuments, buildingstake on a new and added beauty as they deteriorate and become ruins: a certain pathos is added to their original beauty. This is true of the automobiles in this series: once the beloved machines of people and families who owned and drove them, they now evoke a terrible beauty and sadness.

Damiani Anderson Zaca Fire Island Invasion
Book SynopsisThe 'Invasion', rooted in the rebellious spirit of the '70s gay liberation movement, represents a unique fusion of rebellion, glamour, and defiance of societal norms. Invasion of the Pines is an annual event that takes place on July 4th in Fire Island, New York. The inaugural invasion took place in 1976 when a drag queen was denied entry into a restaurant in The Pines and a group of her friends, also dressed in drag, stormed the island in protest. Since then, The Invasion has been repeated every year, with hundreds of drag queens descending on The Pines to commemorate and celebrate this original act of protest. Fire Island Invasion: Day of Independence by Anderson Zaca marks the 50th anniversary of this historic and cultural phenomenon. New Yorkbased photographer Anderson Zaca (born 1976) began documenting The Invasion in 2007. Embraced by the community, he has experienced the evolution of this event year after year and honors the magic of this powerful spectacle. Shot using black-and-white film and a medium format camera, Zaca's work combines traditional and contemporary elements, showcasing the intricate details of each scene and capturing the beautifully contradictory nature of the individuals involved. With over three thousand images spanning almost two decades, Zaca's photographs serve as both an archive and a tribute to the transformative power of the art of drag during this iconic annual celebration.

Skira Timothy Greenfield-Sanders: Face to Face:
Book SynopsisSimple, direct, and penetrating, the celebrated photographer Timothy Greenfield-Sanders portrays his subjects like a painter from another age. Thanks to his 11x14” Fulmer & Schwing, an old wooden box dated 1905, which he uses as if he were using a palette and brush, he produces portraits that are rich in detail without being overly psychological. The poignant poses and expressions he captures in his straightforward images convey a sense of the person. Like Rembrandt and Velázquez depicting the great figures of their time, Greenfield-Sanders focuses his lens on today’s icons: artists, architects, writers, scientists, actors, directors, musicians artists, architects. Undoubtedly one of Greenfield-Sanders’s greatest merits is his being able to limit the distance that separates the portrait from the observer. This beautifully produced volume brings together an impressive selection of portraits taken between 1977 and the present with over 100 never published before. The juxtaposition of the portraits adds a compelling dimension to the individual portraits. The intensity of Elaine and Willem de Kooning or Norman Mailer and Gore Vidal multiplies as they appear next to each other on the page. William Wegman and Richard Hamilton lean toward each other, toward some kind of cosmic center. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg seem to confirm the notion that a director is in total control. And porn star Briana Banks, look every bit like a porn star.

Cannibal/Hannibal Publishers Werner Mantz: The Perfect Eye
Book SynopsisWerner Mantz (1901-1983) was a prominent architectural and industrial photographer who began his career in the 1920s. His work occupies a unique historical position thanks to his visual language, technical prowess and use of natural light. As one of the most important photographers of the New Building movement, Mantz’s oeuvre bridges the gap between the often-anonymous nature of commissioned photography and the modernist, artistic avant-garde movements of the interwar years, such as the Bauhaus. In the 1970s, Mantz was even hailed as the ‘missing link’ in the history of international photography. To date, only thematic selections from Mantz’s wide-ranging oeuvre have been exhibited. This monograph sets the record straight by showcasing, for the very first time, his immense versatility. Werner Mantz – The Perfect Eye contains over 300 predominantly vintage images, ranging from architectural photography, advertising shots and portraits of adults and children, to views of industry and mines, religious subjects, shops, restaurants and interiors, as well as roads, public spaces, landscapes and travel photographs. That Mantz’s oeuvre belongs to the canon of international photography is indisputable. With text contributions by Frits Gierstberg, Stijn Huijts, Huub Smeets, Charlotte Mantz and Clément Mantz. Werner Mantz – The Perfect Eye is the publication accompanying the retrospective exhibition of Werner Mantz at the Bonnefanten in Maastricht from 25 September 2022 to 26 February 2023.

Cannibal/Hannibal Publishers The Endless Coloured Ways
Book SynopsisIntriguing self-portraits, desolate landscapes and vibrant colours: the Dutch-Croatian artist Sanja Marušić (b. 1991) creates new worlds with her images. She travels to the four corners of the globe, but just as easily she uses her own living room as a backdrop. Recurring themes are escapism, the relationship between man and nature, motherhood, and finding the balance in human relationships. Marušić’s artistic practice is guided by her love of experimenting with shapes, colours and layers. Photography is the starting point for each work, but she then uses a variety of analogue and digital techniques, sometimes changing the image in such a way that it seems as if we are looking at a painting. The performances (staged by the artist herself), the creation of a set using handmade props, and the manual post-processing are just as important as the photo itself. The stories she tells through her photography and films touch on her personal life; for example, the series Eutierria (2019) depicts her honeymoon, Before You (2020) documents her pregnancy, and Sasha and Sanja (ongoing) deals with her motherhood. With a text contribution by author Selin Kuşçu.
