Damiani Caleb Cain Marcus: A Brief Movement After Death
Book SynopsisA brief movement after death by Caleb Cain Marcus explores the release of energy from the body into the universe when we die. The images were taken along the coasts of New York and California and contain sky and ocean—immense bodies of space that we can lose ourselves in; becoming part of their vastness. The inspiration for the book came to the photographer from a personal experience. With the birth of his daughter, his death suddenly felt very near. His childhood questions about what happens when we die resurfaced and Marcus began to think about how to visually represent what occurs after death. The work represents the starting point of his new practice that juxtaposes digital and hand-applied mediums to create a hybrid surface, color and edge that challenges the medium of a photograph and the way in which it is seen, understood and felt. With the motion of a pendulum the grease pencil is swung by a string to make tightly grouped marks that reference the finite quantity of time in a lifespan and that move across the paper as if in a formation of light leaving the earth.

Book SynopsisGreece. Fifty years ago James Klosty travelled among its islands, across its mainland, and through its northern mountains. He had no idea where he was and didn’t particularly care. Fifty years later Klosty rather regrets not taking notes but feels strongly that he, personally, has nothing to say about Greece that has not already been said many times. Thus there are no texts. Damiani Jacopo Benassi: Bologna Portraits
Book SynopsisBologna Portraits is the portrait of one of the most charming and least well-known Italian cities portrayed through the faces of the people who live there today. It started during the artist’s many stays in the town. Discovering Bologna little by little, Jacopo Benassi took pictures, like a sort of notebook, of the faces of the most interesting people he met during his time there. After a few months he already had a large portfolio of people which, like in a mosaic, built a bigger portrait of the whole city today. Bologna is probably the best-kept secret of the Italian cities with a great past. Large-scale tourism has never affected it, but in recent years it has been discovered by a growing group of sophisticated travellers passionate about art, culture, cinema and food. The portraits are a mix of young artists, writers, minor and great musicians, leading businessmen, famous bar tenders, tailors, professors at the local university (the oldest in the Western world), personalities and international artists such as Nino Migliori and Luigi Ontani. All of them born or living in Bologna. The whole book is a study of real faces that are able to be meaningful and to tell a story, and recall a tradition like the study of faces by Pier Paolo Pasolini in some of his films, or Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests. But at the same time, they recall a masterpiece like Un Paese, the book produced by Paul Strand and Cesare Zavattini. The book includes a text by art critic Antonio Grulli.

Book SynopsisSweet Noise. Love in Wartime is a book of photographs and words about the Holocaust, a subject difficult to grasp and almost impossible to document. It is also a story of love in a time of war, told in a clear voice using compelling black-and-white photographs and simple, evocative language to build a framework around this pivotal moment in history. Hirshfeld's parents, Polish Jews who survived Auschwitz, raised him in a small city in Alabama, where life in the South of the 1950s and 1960s was quiet and, on the surface, mostly idyllic. But lurking under the surface was a remarkable yet tension-filled history that fully revealed itself only after he matured and had a family of his own. He knew the outer perimeters of his parent’s story: the challenges of being Jewish in a place that increasingly alienated them, their individual trajectories as they moved through adulthood and their chance meeting in a Nazi-created ghetto where they fell in love. But it took a trip to Poland with his mother in 1993 (and the discovery in 2005 of hundreds of post-war letters between his parents) to more fully acquaint me with the depths of their tragedies and the exceptional love story that began in 1943, sustaining them through the war. Though Sweet Noise features events that began seventy-five years ago, the material is eerily timely. As Eastern Europe grapples with this horrific legacy, and many countries are reassessing their responses to mass immigration, those in a position to bear witness need a supportive environment wherein art and language serve to remind the world what can occur when hatred and the concept of ethnic cleansing are given free rein.

Book SynopsisUntitled 19” x 15” captures unlikely characters comprised of found objects derived from the streets of New York. The artist’s publication sheds light on the infinite possibilities one can achieve when allowing your perspective to change, and in turn allowing the material to separate from its materiality. Although the final pieces are represented in photographs, each image evokes the understanding and intimacy of sculpture. The level of detail forces the viewer to get closer to the image itself, to discover the beauty that lives in between the lines. The infrathin moment revealing itself. For Salinas, altering the sense of objects is a way of forcing himself to see the object differently, to question the permanence of the objects original intent. Instead he views himself as curating his expansive collection of materials, altering and manipulating them into compositions that transform their meaning. The balance created in his images comes from arranging and rearranging these objects until the right chord is struck, creating harmony out of discord.

Book SynopsisDaydreams Walking is comprised of 196 photographs shot on the streets of New York City by Jeremiah Dine between 2010 and 2017. Dine’s exploration of the daily ebb and flow of humanity follows in the tradition of 20th Century street photography as practiced by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank and Garry Winogrand, among others. The city illuminated is the subject, with the people, objects and streets the supporting cast. Dine has photographed on the streets of New York since he was a teenager, first in black and white with 35mm cameras, then starting in the 2000s in color with digital cameras. Damiani Martin Parr: From the Pope to a Flat White
Book SynopsisThis special edition limited to 70 copies includes the book and one gelatin silver print signed and numbered by Parr. The picture is titled Glenbeigh Races, County Kerry, 1983. The print measures 20.0 x 29.0cm Martin Parr has been taking photographs in Ireland for 40 years. His work covers many of the most significant moments in Ireland’s recent history, encompassing the Pope’s visit in 1979, when a third of the country’s population attended Mass in Knock and Phoenix Park in Dublin, as well as gay weddings and start-up companies in 2019. It is difficult to think of country that has changed so dramatically in this relatively short space of time. Parr lived in the West of Ireland between 1980-82. He photographed traditional aspects of rural life such as horse fairs and dances, but also looked at the first hint of Ireland’s new wealth in the shape of the bungalows that were springing up everywhere, replacing more traditional dwellings. During subsequent trips to Ireland he explored the new estates around Dublin and the introduction of the first drive-through McDonald’s. Parr also looked at the North and documented how, after the Good Friday agreement, the Troubles became the focus of a new tourist boom. The final chapter of this book portrays a contemporary Dublin where start-up companies are thriving, the docks area is being gentrified and where icons of wealth and modernity – such as the flat white – can be everywhere. Ireland has also now voted to allow both abortion and gay weddings, developments that would have been unthinkable 40 years ago. The book includes an introduction by the acclaimed journalist Fintan O’Toole.

Damiani Joel Meyerowitz: Redheads
Book SynopsisPhotographer Joel Meyerowitz (born 1938) began photographing redheads in 1978 against the contrasting blue backdrop of Cape Cod. The portraits from this period are collected in this new edition of Meyerowitz's 1991 photobook Redheads, featuring 16 additional images. After running an ad in the Provincetown Advocate, Meyerowitz began collecting the experiences of people who grew up with red hair, in addition to photographing them. Making up only two or three percent of the world’s population, their stories of schoolyard bullying and self-acceptance illustrate a broader narrative of growth and beauty. Despite cultural and racial distinctions between redheads, the phenotypic association between the subjects brings a sense of familiality to the collection of portraits. Meyerowitz describes how red hair and its reaction to light evokes a sense of the color film process.
