Book SynopsisHerbert Katzman's lyrical representations of contemporary New York are a stunning tribute to the artist's fascination with the skyline of his adopted city. 'Glorious Sky: Herbert Katzman's New York' highlights a selection of his paintings and drawings produced over half a century, during which he worked largely outside the abstract art movement that dominated the mid-20th century. Included in the 1952 'Fifteen Americans' exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, Katzman went on to become an influential teacher at New York's School of Visual Arts and continued to work and exhibit until his death in 2004. This vibrant new volume traces his career from his arrival in New York in 1950 through the more abstract "New York School" paintings of the early sixties, to his later work which, with its emphasis on mood and muted colour, shows the influence of Turner, Whistler and the Hudson River School.Table of ContentsContents: Foreword by Susan Henshaw Jones, Ronay Menschel Director of the Museum of the City of New York Acknowledgements by Julia Blaut Remembering Herbert Katzman by Alison Lurie Herbert Katzman and MOMA's Fifteen Americans: Abstraction and Figuration in the Post-War Art World of New York by Julia Blaut Katzman and the Tradition of the Cityscape in American Art by Katherine Manthorne Paintings Drawings Sources Illustrated Chronology of the Artist's Life by Jillian Russo Exhibition History and Bibliography

Book Synopsis'Alexis Rockman: A Fable for Tomorrow' traces the artist's career from 'Pond's Edge' (1986) to 'The Reef' (2009), with its timely reminder of the perils of off-shore oil drilling. Superficially easy viewing, Rockman's paintings subvert the optimism of the American dream with their mix of scientific precision and environmental degradation. This vividly illustrated volume highlights the attention to detail and striking use of colour which give Rockman's work an almost cinematic impact that is seldom seen in contemporary art. His compelling mix of intensely coloured realism, scientific detail and strong polemic, result in art that is both a demand for action and an elegy over what has been lost. Author Joanna Marsh worked closely with Rockman on the painting selection and convincingly links the various themes of the artist's work over three decades with the history of America's environmental movement. Highlights include 'Evolution' (1992), his first mural-sized painting, and 'Manifest Destiny' (2003-04), an ambitious large-scale work commissioned by the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Rockman's ability to cross the boundary between fact and fiction appeals to both scientists and art critics.Table of ContentsForeword by Elizabeth Broun, director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum Acknowledgments Alexis Rockman: A Fable for Tomorrow by Joanna Marsh Plates Panoramas of the Post-Apocalypse: Rockman's Triptych, American Landscape, and Landscape Theater by Kevin J. • Artistic Journey of Yasuo Kuniyoshi

D Giles Ltd Artistic Journey of Yasuo Kuniyoshi

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisJapanese-born artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi's career and art evolved from innocence and early success to complexity and disillusionment. Born in Japan in 1889, Kuniyoshi arrived in the United States as a teenager and studied art in New York. He came into prominence during the 1920s through his distinctive modern figural style, original subjects, and humour. His work became more sensuous and worldly after two long stays in Paris, as he painted moody, reflective women and still lifes with unusual objects. Kuniyoshi was thoroughly integrated into American life and the art world-in 1948 the Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his work, the first retrospective that museum ever devoted to a living artist-but immigration law prevented him from becoming an American citizen. Classified an "enemy alien" after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he remained steadfastly on the side of his adopted country during the painful war years, working with the Office of War Information to create artworks indicting Japanese atrocities. After the war, Kuniyoshi developed a compelling late style, with bitter subjects and paradoxically bright colours. The Artistic Journey of Yasuo Kuniyoshi is a welcome introduction to this complex artist's entire career, featuring seventy of his best works from public and private collections in America and Japan. More than half a century after his death in 1953, this is a chance for a new generation to assess and enjoy Kuniyoshi's life and art. AUTHOR: Tom Wolf is Professor of Art History, Bard College, NY. An artist, he has had paintings exhibited at Artists Space, New York; Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art; Koslow Gallery, Los Angeles and Art Gallery of Western Australia. He is a recipient of Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship, and Winterthur Museum and Library Fellowships. 155 colour illustrations

Book SynopsisFood is fundamental to life. The way we produce it is the most pressing issue of our times. In recent years, several family-run farms in the downlands of West Dorset have decided to radically change their approach to working the land. When the artist Chris Drury and poet-novelist Kay Syrad began collaborating with this group of farmers in the villages of Godmanstone and Sydling St Nicholas, they began to discover why these changes were being made and what they might mean for the local communities - and all of us - who depend on the farmed landscape for food. Chris Drury's artwork and Kay Syrad's prose-poetry combine here to form a sensitive and authentic portrait of a group of men and women whose lives are shaped by the land. It is a rich exploration of work, soil and the sustainability of their farming practice. With its focus on a very particular landscape, the book reveals to us the creativity and resilience of organic farming, and shows just how much we all need to value the complexities of food production and our future relationship with the land.

Art / Books A K Dolven: Please Return

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisSince the 1990s, acclaimed Norwegian and London-based artist AK Dolven has produced a substantial body of work that explores the relationship between individuals and the perception of their environment, the connections that bind inner and outer realities. Using a diverse range of media, she combines seemingly simple, almost minimalistic elements to create complex responses to a particular locale – especially the frozen landscapes of the Arctic Circle – while maintaining a universal voice that resonates far beyond the specifics of the place. Frequently immersive in nature, her works investigate but also induce feelings of discomfort and disorientation in the eye, body and mind of the viewer, a sense of forever being at odds with one’s surroundings. Coinciding with a solo exhibition at the Ikon Gallery, this book presents the past decade of the artist’s practice. In five themed chapters, each artwork is shown in a series of large-scale installation shots and details that replicate the spatial and physical impact of the piece itself. Introductory texts to each chapter by five internationally renowned writers and thinkers illuminate various aspects of the artist’s work, addressing, among other things, its political significance, emotional intensity and philosophical depth. An introduction by volume editor Gaby Hartel considers the importance of AK Dolven’s sketchbooks to the genesis of her work, with a 24-page insert reproducing some of these sketchbooks in facsimile form. A second bound-in insert at the back of the book presents the artist’s own notes on the works, with supporting source material.

Two Rivers Press The Art of Peter Hay

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisPeter Hay (1951-2003) was a visionary artist. He was a very English painter whose work has a poetic and mystical quality. Eclectic, curious magpie, he found inspiration from everywhere and gathered it into his image-making. He was a fine draughtsman and watercolourist, a brilliantly inventive printmaker. At heart a figurative artist, the work moves into abstraction through striking black and white and a rich use of colour. After studying Fine Art at Reading University, and two years away in Cornwall, Peter Hay settled in Reading for the rest of his life. He had a strong sense of place; the junction of the rivers Thames and Kennet close to his home was a frequent symbolic theme in his work. He became a central figure in the local art community and was an inspirational teacher. In 1994 he founded Two Rivers Press which gave him the opportunity to pursue through illustration his passion for campaigning, his love of poetry and history. This book brings together the range of this prolific artist's work for the first time.

Book SynopsisRoelof Louw (19362017) created sculpture from wooden slats, cast-iron wedges, sand-blasted and painted scaffolding poles, rope and neon. He made installations using industrial rubber bands, rolled-up lead sheets, or using tape recorders and the movements of viewers around a space. His work addresses itself to our bodies and minds, implicating them in its realisation and its sites, which might be streets, parks, woods or galleries. In Soul City (Pyramid of Oranges) (1967), the work for which he is best known, the fit of an orange to a hand and the experience of eating the fruit are crucial aspects, as is the action of destroying the piece in the process. Prescient in anticipating the participatory and interactive art of the present, Louw's work remained resolutely defined as sculpture, at the artist's insistence. This was even so as sculpture became conceptual, dematerialised', or located in the expanded field', and while his art was itself a part of these shifts.Born in South Africa, Louw moved to London in 1961. Practicing in London, New York and Cape Town, Louw participated in some of the most important episodes in sculpture history of the twentieth century. As well as being the first authoritative overview of Louw's oeuvre, this book presents a new perspective on a familiar and much written about era in art.

  • Thomas Hennell: The Land and the Mind

Pimpernel Press Ltd Thomas Hennell: The Land and the Mind

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThomas Hennell (1903–45) said his aim was to ‘surprise his subject’ – to capture the transient quality of the moment. In watercolour he found his perfect medium, producing work which was, as his fellow artist Edward Bawden said, ‘fully expressive and technically perfect’. During an idyllic childhood in rural Kent Hennell discovered his love of the English countryside. He explored its fields, farms and woods, and later, travelling on a rusty old bicycle, developed an appreciation of England’s traditions and crafts. Much of his work records the countryside in a state of change, imbuing his sense of loss with poetic intensity. In the early 1930s, Hennell suffered a severe breakdown and later described the three years he spent in mental hospitals in his memoir The Witnesses (1938), an astonishing document in a period when stigma still attached to mental illness. Hennell’s remarkable talent for friendship survived his years of mental turmoil. Jessica Kilburn’s new biography brings Hennell the man vividly to life through extracts from his letters to friends and personal accounts by people who knew him. As this richly illustrated book shows, the artist’s final years were exceptionally productive. In 1943 Hennell was appointed an official war artist, yielding commissions in Iceland and northern Europe. After the pastoral evocations of inter-war England, his portrayal of war’s brutality is shocking: devastated French towns, emaciated prisoners of war. At the war’s end, Hennell received a final posting to the Far East. Tragically, he was caught up in the struggle for independence in Java and in late October 1945 disappeared in circumstances which Jessica Kilburn recreates more fully than in any previous account. Thomas Hennell was born into a remarkable generation of English artists that included Eric Ravilious, John Piper, Graham Sutherland and Barbara Hepworth. His peers regarded him as one of their finest creative talents; Jessica Kilburn’s sensitive and deeply researched new biography restores this unjustly neglected artist to his rightful place in the history of twentieth-century English art.Trade Review"This well-written, intricately researched and hugely detailed account of his life and work . . .generously illustrated, and with informative picture captions, has a relaxed breadth which suits the subject . . . It is indisputable that Hennell was an artist and writer of distinctive achievement, whose work should be more widely known. This substantial and impressive book deserves to lead the way in a Hennell revival." -- Andrew Lambirth * The Spectator *"Truly a delight, beautifully written, with superb illustrations." -- Jenny Uglow"The first full biography of the artist in over 30 years...richly illustrated...a full account of his fascinating life and work." * The Chap *"Magnificent...this book glows with colour on almost every page....a sympathetic and nuanced biography which will do a great deal to broaden Hennell's appeal and ensure that his claims to the pinnacle of watercolour excellence can no longer be ignored." * The Burlington Magazine *"Superbly researched and illustrated...a thoughtful account of a remarkable life." * Times Literary Supplement *"A timely reminder of an artist well worth discovering." * Illustration magazine *"Hennell's superb watercolours and drawings capture English agricultural life in the 1930s and 40s, on the cusp of changing for ever, and Kilburn's very welcome and lavishly illustrated biography is appropriately elegiac." -- Peter Parker * Times Literary Supplement Books of the Year *

Book SynopsisExplores Rembrandt's unique approach to depicting the nature of divine encounter and the complexities of its representation. Rembrandt took an unusual and dramatic approach to biblical subjects, exploring the nature of divine encounter and the complexities of its representation, making use of the viewer's knowledge of the subject whilst finding ways to bring the familiar to life. Discussions about what we see as opposed to what we know were prevalent in the religious, artistic, scientific, and philosophical thinking of the period. It was left to artists to portray divine encounter in pictorial form. Book SynopsisMarking a crucial turning point in Caravaggio's life and artistic development, the Crucifixion of Saint Andrew exemplifies the artist's famous tenebristic style, developed during his rise to fame in Rome, and simultaneously signals a new, grittier realism in his work. Inspired both by a Spanish patron and by the urban topography of Naples, a city three times the size of Rome in Caravaggio's day, the Crucifixion of Saint Andrew became a mobile portent of Caravaggio's stylistic revolution when the viceroy brought it with him to Valladolid in 1610. Recounting the complex history of this masterwork and its understudied position in Caravaggio's oeuvre, this book reveals the ways in which the Crucifixion of Saint Andrew functioned first as a devotional aid and subsequently as a harbinger of Caravaggism abroad.Table of ContentsDirector's Foreword; Acknowledgments; Preface: Why Caravaggio?; Introduction; Part I. D Giles Ltd Artist in Exile: The Visual Diary of Baroness

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisA major new illustrated volume on the visual diary of extraordinary artist and traveller Henriette, Baroness Hyde de Neuville, who lived and worked in America during the early nineteenth century. Artist in Exile is the first in-depth, illustrated exploration of the life and work of Anne Marguerite Josephine Henriette Rouillé de Marigny, Baroness Hyde de Neuville (1771–1849), who arrived in America in 1807 as a refugee from Napoleonic France and embarked on an extraordinary journey of discovery. Her unparalleled, beguiling, watercolours and drawings - over 200, made while travelling through seven countries and on the high seas, published here together with previously unpublished documents and letters - provide an invaluable historical visual record of the early years of the American Republic and its racially diverse population. From this exciting material Henriette emerges as a cosmopolitan artist who exerted her influence in political and social circles on both sides of the Atlantic, courageously traversing the European continent, unescorted, to beg Napoleon to spare her husband's life. Neuville's status as a woman, and an outsider, made her a particularly keen and sympathetic observer of individuals from a range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. She drew the earliest ethnographically correct images of indigenous Americans, together with vistas predating the works of other traveler-artists, and long-vanished buildings. Although she arrived in America as an outcast, by the end of her second residency, as the celebrated wife of the French Minister Plenipotentiary, she was interacting with political leaders and making her mark on society in Washington, DC and New York City. Artist in Exile tells her compelling story. AUTHOR: Roberta J.M. Olson, who received her Ph.D. in Art History from Princeton University, is Professor Emerita of Art History at Wheaton College in Massachusetts, and Curator of Drawings at the New-York Historical Society, where she has worked since 2000. 276 colour illustrations

Book SynopsisTrevor Paglen is an American artist, geographer, and author. What I want from art," says Paglen, "is to help see the historical moment we live in." His photographs make visible things we're not meant to see; he regards this invisibility as emblematic of that moment. Looking toward the earth, sea, or sky as earlier artists have, Paglen captures the same horizon seen by Turner in the nineteenth century or by Ansel Adams in the twentieth. Only in Paglen's images, a drone or classified communications satellite is also visible. "For me," Paglen observes, "seeing the drone in the twenty-first century is a bit like Turner seeing the train in the nineteenth century." Turner was less interested in the technology than its effects on perception, by its ability to accelerate human motion. Paglen is interested in our evolving perception in space. Standing in the Western landscape where Adams worked, Paglen photographs the drone as it photographs him. His images suggest that our conceptions of space and visuality are undergoing radical change; the physical limits of vision are no longer a reliable measure of what is visible to (often mechanical) others.Trevor Paglen: Sites Unseen is the first major career survey for the artist in the United States. it presents Paglen's key photographic series: Limit Telephotography; Tapped Underwater Cables and Cable Landing Sites; and The Other Night Sky and Untitled (Drones). Other works included are Code Names, NSA Triptych, 89 Landscapes, Trinity Cube, Autonomy Cube, and The Fence. The volume includes an essay by curator John Jacob; an essay by Luke Skrebowski of the University of Manchester; and a conversation between the artist and Wendy Hui Kyong Chun and Katherine Crawford.

Book SynopsisThe subject of writing and receiving letters, which recurs frequently in the work of Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), is given dramatic tension in this masterful painting of two women in a mysterious moment of crisis. The artist seldom, if ever, surpassed the subtly varied effects of light seen here as it gleams from the pearl jewellery, sparkles from the glass and silver objects on the table, and falls softly over the figures in their shadowy setting. The Frick Diptych series sparks a dialogue between creative spirits and art historians, promising new insights into some of the Frick's most famous masterpieces. The third volume, to be published in 2019, will have a contribution by author Edmund de Waal on a pair of porcelain and bronze candlesticks by the 18th-century French metalworker Pierre Gouthiere.Table of ContentsDirector's Foreword; Acknowledgments; Two Letters on a Day in the Early 1660s by James Ivory; Vermeer's Mistress and Maid by Margaret Iacono; Bibliography; Index

D Giles Ltd The Art of Winold Reiss: An Immigrant Modernist

Book SynopsisThe Art of Winold Reiss brings to light the creative and forward-thinking work of this German-born artist. Winold Reiss (1886-1953) arrived in New York in 1913, the year of the ground-breaking Armory Show. The exhibition shook the American art scene to its core and ushered in a radically new artistic sensibility, whilst Reiss's exuberant, dynamic designs anticipated the American passion for the new European avant-garde art. Steeped in a German aesthetic, Reiss brought his unique brand of modernism to the United States, and established a reputation and material presence in New York's cultural and commercial landscape. This vibrantly illustrated volume showcases over 140 examples of Reiss's work, ranging from his early graphic creations for advertisements, menus, packaging, calendars, and books, to his architectural and interior designs. • D Giles Ltd Rembrandt's Polish Rider (Frick Diptych)

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe romantic and enigmatic character of this picture has inspired many theories about its subject, meaning, history, and even its attribution to Rembrandt. Several portrait identifications have been proposed, including an ancestor of the Polish Oginski family, which owned the painting in the eighteenth century, and the Polish Socinian theologian Jonasz Szlichtyng. The rider's costume, his weapons, and the breed of his horse have also been claimed as Polish. But if The Polish Rider is a portrait, it certainly breaks with tradition. Equestrian portraits are not common in seventeenth-century Dutch art, and furthermore, in the traditional equestrian portrait the rider is fashionably dressed and his mount is spirited and well-bred. The painting may instead portray a character from history or literature, and many possibilities have been proposed. Candidates range from the Prodigal Son to Gysbrech van Amstel, a hero of Dutch medieval history, and from the Old Testament David to the Mongolian warrior Tamerlane. It is possible that Rembrandt intended simply to represent a foreign soldier, a theme popular in his time in European art, especially in prints. Nevertheless, Rembrandt's intentions in The Polish Rider seem clearly to transcend a simple expression of delight in the exotic. The painting has also been described as a latter-day Miles Christianus (Soldier of Christ), an apotheosis of the mounted soldiers who were still defending Eastern Europe against the Turks in the seventeenth century. Many have felt that the youthful rider faces unknown dangers in the strange and somber landscape, with its mountainous rocks crowned by a mysterious building, its dark water, and the distant flare of a fire.

  • Jennifer Bartlett & Pierre Bonnard: In and Out of

D Giles Ltd Jennifer Bartlett & Pierre Bonnard: In and Out of

Book SynopsisThis is an exploration of two artists' creative dialogue with gardens and nature: the French post-impressionist painter Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) and the contemporary American artist Jennifer Bartlett (b. 1941). Both were avid gardeners, and gardens, especially the ones they created for themselves, had a lifelong influence on both artists' works. Garden views from both inside the house and the outside became become a defining subject. This volume brings together over 45 paintings, drawings, and prints by Bonnard and Bartlett. Gardens are a recurrent theme throughout Bonnard's oeuvre, from the early days of Le Clos, the Bonnard summer home in the Dauphine, and his first garden at Vernonnet, west of Paris, to his final home, Le Bosquet near Cagnes, which became his favorite place to paint and from which he seldom traveled. Jennifer Bartlett emerged in the mid-1970s to become one of the leading American artists of her time, and one of the first female painters of her generation to be both commercially successful and critically acclaimed. Since the 1990s, Bartlett has been spending her summers in a small cottage near the beach in Amagansett, on Long Island's East End. Like Bonnard's paintings of gardens, Bartlett's In the Garden series continues to reveal its true urgency through of the artist's relationship to nature and dialogue with the many languages in painterly history.
