Prestel Camille Pissarro: The Studio of Modernism

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAs one of the founding figures of Impressionism, Camille Pissarro exerted considerable influence over the movement’s other members, such as Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, and Mary Cassatt. This publication focuses on Pissarro’s collaborations with these and other artists. It also celebrates the avant-garde quality of his painting, particularly in his contributions to Neo-Impressionism. Focusing on his role in the revolutionary Impressionist movement of the 1870s, the book traces Pissarro’s work in dialog with his fellow artists, particularly Cezanne and Gauguin, and also reveals his influence on works by Alfred Sisley, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac and others. In addition to pages of exquisite reproductions of works by Pissarro and his contemporaries, this volume features illuminating essays on fascinating aspects of the life and work of this prolific artist. Readers will come away with a new understanding of how Pissarro’s unique talent for collaboration and unity was vital to the development of French painting in the late 19th century.

  • Francis Bacon Graphic Novel

    Prestel Francis Bacon Graphic Novel

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTold for the first time in graphic novel form, the story of Francis Bacon’s life is as complex, colorful, and highly charged as his paintings. Drawn in shades of mauve, red, yellow, and blue that distinguished his palette, these illustrations weave together a troubling but compassionate narrative, one that draws on the tragic events of Bacon’s childhood and youth, as well as reflecting the profoundly passionate yearnings of the artist he became. Separated into thematic and chronological sections the novel highlights the prevailing influences of Bacon’s life and times: his early autodidacticism and estrangement from his family; his struggles to make his way as a surrealist painter and his destruction of his early work. It traces his gradual success in postwar Europe, his powerful and often violent romantic relationships, his foray into portraiture, and his never-ending search for subject matter and meaning in his work. Alternating between full-page illustrations and smaller, captioned works, Portolano imagines not only the known details of Bacon’s biography, but also his inner life—the dreams, fears, and obsessions that were equally formidable underpinnings of his oeuvre. Woven together with historical facts and figures, this graphic novel reconstructs a life as only a cartoonist could—image led, thoughtfully composed, and deeply evocative of its subject matter.

Book SynopsisTADA's Revolution is a playful, visual journey into the fantastical and imaginative miniature worlds of Los Angeles-based artist, Susan Chi. Chronicling the various adventures and stories of toys and miniature animal characters, the book is a wondrous showcase of carefully and meticulously-crafted and detailed sets and dioramas, using all miniature items, objects, and furniture handmade by Chi or from the artist's own collection of vintage toys curated specially from auctions, toy stores, and flea markets around the world. Each of the photo stories gleefully portrays the often absurd moments and artificiality of human nature and modern life, while relaying such universal themes as mischief, honesty, curiosity, compassion, fear, and wonder. Laced with a subtle dark humour yet exuding an overall joyful and childlike spirit that lives within us all, it is easy to see why Chi's imagery has captivated the hearts and imaginations of children and adults alike, and has amassed an international and loyal following on Flickr and social media. teNeues is pleased to present the first printed anthology of Susan Chi's work, TADA's Revolution: Mischief in Miniature.

Book SynopsisIn the latter half of the 19th century, in the verdant countryside near Aix-en-Provence, Paul Cézanne (1839–1906), busily plied his brush to landscapes and still lifes that would become anchors of modern art. With compact, intense dabs of paint and bold new approaches to light and space, he mediated the way from Impressionism to the defining movements of the early 20th century and became, in the words of both Matisse and Picasso, “father of us all.” This fresh artist introduction selects key works from Cézanne’s oeuvre to understand his development, innovation, and crucial influence on modern art. From compositions of fruits and pears to scenes of outdoor bathers, we trace his experimentation with color, perspective, and texture to evoke “a harmony parallel to Nature,” as well as the very process of seeing and recording. Along the way, we discover Cézanne’s celebrated Card Players, his layering of warm and cool hues to build up form and surface, and the geometric rigor of his landscapes from the vicinity of Aix-en-Provence, as bright with the light of southern France as they are bold with a radical new rendering of dimensions and depth.

  • Caravaggio

    Taschen GmbH Caravaggio

Book SynopsisMichelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610) was always a name to be reckoned with. Notorious bad boy of the Italian Baroque, the artist was at once celebrated and controversial, violent in temper, precise in technique, a creative master, and a man on the run. Though famed for his dramatic use of color, light, and shadow, it was above all Caravaggio’s boundary-breaking naturalism which scorched his name into the annals of art history. From the dirtied soles of feet to the sexualized languor of bare flesh, the artist allowed even sacred and biblical scenes to unfold with a startling, often visceral humanity. This vivid pictorial world was accompanied by an equally intense personal biography, scored by gambling, debts, drunken brawls, and even a murder charge. This book brings together more than 50 of Caravaggio’s most famous and revolutionary works to explore how and why this artist is now considered the most important painter of the early Baroque period and one of the defining influences of art history, without whom Ribera, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Delacroix, Courbet, and Manet could never have painted the way they did.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1950s New York, before he became one of the most famous names of the 20th century, Andy Warhol was already a skilled and successful commercial artist. During this time, as part of his strategy to woo clients and forge friendships, he created seven handmade artist’s books, reserved to his most valued contacts. These featured personal, unique drawings and quirky texts revealing his fondness for—among other subjects—cats, food, myths, shoes, beautiful boys, and gorgeous girls.Decades later, with originals now changing hands for thousands of dollars at auction, TASCHEN presents an XL-sized volume containing meticulous reprints of these seven books. With titles such as Love Is a Pink Cake, 25 Cats Named Sam, and À la Recherche du Shoe Perdu, the series reveals the artist’s off-the-wall character as well as his accomplished draftsmanship, boundless creativity, and innuendo-laced humor. This book makes delightful play with styles and genres, including A Is for Alphabet, which devotes a page to each letter of the alphabet, with illustrations complemented by stumbling three-line verses that tell of strange encounters between man and animal. In the Bottom of My Garden is at once a Warhol twist on a children’s book and a covert celebration of gay love. Wild Raspberries, meanwhile, is a spoof cookbook with a cornucopia of adventurous recipes and illustrations. This volume also includes introductions for each of Warhol’s illustrations. Complete with rarely seen photographs of the artist, inspirational ephemera, and commercial assignments, they contextualize Warhol’s 1950s art, offering a glimpse into his early creative process as well as his endearing, playful character.Little-known, much-coveted jewels in the Warhol crown, these hand-drawn delights are as appealing and original today as they were back in the halcyon days of the 1950s and offer a unique glimpse at a budding genius on the cusp of global fame.© The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc.Trade Review“A rarely seen chapter of Warhol’s creativity.” * Wall Street Journal *

Book SynopsisWith unparalleled artistic originality Max Ernst (1891–1976) transformed everything he touched. By pushing the boundaries and breaking loose from the confined view of the culture of his time, he became one of the most important figures of Dadaism and Surrealism. Driven by the counter-reaction to the horrors of World War I, he became a pioneer of the Dada movement. The closing of the famed Dada exhibit in Cologne for ‘obscenity’ led Ernst to spend the rest of his life in Paris, where he came in contact with the Surrealists. Above all, Ernst stands out for his varied style and technique, having produced an oeuvre that reaches from paintings, drawings, and sculpture, across texts and stage settings to collage novels and the development of his own ‘frottage’ technique. During World War II, Ernst, like many of his colleagues, became an ‘undesirable foreigner’ and was forced to emigrate; however, he returned to France after the war. Continuing a career that spanned decades, in 1954 he received the Grand Prize for Painting at the Biennial in Venice. This book is a journey through magic, vividness, and fantasy. It is a gateway into the intricate mind and world of Max Ernst.

He is widely known for his modernist illustrations of everyday life as well as epic narratives of African American history and historical figures. Book SynopsisAnselm Reyle is one of the internationally most renowned German artists of his generation. Born in Tü bingen, he grew up in Heilbronn where he exhibited his work at Kunsthalle Vogelmann. The list of places where he has exhibited reads like a who? s who of the art world: from Kunsthalle Zurich to Palazzo Grassi in Venice, from Deichtorhallen Hamburg to museums in the United States. His collaborations, such as with Dior for an exclusive series of handbags, are legendary. Anselm Reyle mixes styles, colors, and materials in a rather intriguing way, working with car paint, PVC and mirror film, spray paint, LED lights, concrete, and clay. Found objects as source material tend to play a prominent role in his work; these may be elements from works by other artists, as well as everyday objects, architecture, or design objects. This approach to his own work as reflection, appropriation, rephrasing and reformulation is thus made visible and addressed time and again. The viewers get caught up in the surprising beat of opposing formal as well as material samplings, in which the entire pictorial repertoire of modern abstract image development finds itself.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThorvald Hellesen (1888-1937) was a Norwegian avant-garde artist who lived and worked in Paris in the 1910s and 1920s. He and his wife, the French artist Hélène Perdriat, were part of a circle of artists that included Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Constantin Brâncuși, Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, and many others. In his short yet intense life, Thorvald Hellesen created an impressive unique oeuvre, oriented on Modernism, consisting of oil paintings, watercolours, gouaches, drawings, design projects, and textiles. Nevertheless, even in Norway he is only known to a few. With this publication the authors Dag Blakkisrud, Matthew Drutt, and Hilde Mørch have created a written portrait of Hellesen. In addition to classifying him within the history of art, they try to find explanations as to why his artistic practice is only now being considered important and interesting for Norwegian and international art history. Book SynopsisAntoine Leperlier (b. 1953) is a trained visual artist and painter. He has been working as a freelance glass artist since the 1980s, developing his own glass technique based on casting and the lost-wax technique to create large-format translucent and painterly blocks. In this survey of work spanning more than 40 years, skulls float, snakes are frozen alive, and what looks like abstract watercolours are preserved forever. Time stands still, the universe speaks. His works explore transience and memory, past and future; he stops time, makes moments eternal. Enamel and ceramic inclusions, bubbles, colours, and engravings create colourful, expressive worlds reminiscent of organic forms floating in outer space. This endeavour to capture dynamic images in material form is an approach unique in contemporary glass art.Text in English and French.

Book SynopsisA clothbound appraisal of the Swiss artist's enigmatic architecture-sculptures, driven by his longstanding impulse to construct sheltersThis stylishly produced book documents the architecture-sculptures of Swiss artist Not Vital's (b. 1948) vast oeuvre. Throughout the world, Vital has worked on a series of grand works that skirt the boundary between sculpture and architecture. Driven by an impulse to build shelters that he traces back to childhood, Vital has traveled to Niger, Chile, Belgium, Brazil, Indonesia and the Philippines to construct responsive habitats that integrate themselves into the communities in which they are built. For example, his House to Watch the Sunset, a tower-like structure that is at once ancient and futuristic, is built out of local materials sourced in Brazil, Niger and Switzerland. In addition to these projects, Not Vital: Scarch contains sketches for structures, srudio shots, concepts for future works and sculptures related to the projects.

Book SynopsisZofia Kulik’s rich artistic career has a dual nature. Between 1970 and 1987, she worked alongside Przemysław Kwiek as a member of the duo KwieKulik, after which she began to develop a successful individual career. While KwieKulik’s work has been well established as central to the East European neo-avant-garde art lexicon of the 1970’s and ’80s, Kulik’s solo work has yet to be examined in depth. The first publication devoted solely to her work, this monograph analyzes the themes of her rich and complex oeuvre, addressing the (post)communist condition, artistic labor, intermediality, and the conditions of working as a female artist. The book forms a portrait of Kulik as an artist whose work is both deeply focused and rich in variations that reflect the socio-political shifts in her native Poland. With contributions from leading art historians, including Edit András, Angela Dimitrakaki, Ewa Lajer-Burcharth, Suzana Milevska, and Tomasz Załuski.

Book SynopsisSorolla was the perfect chronicler of trends and styles in clothing in the late 19th and early 20th centuriesSpanish painter Joaquín Sorolla was a keen observer of the life and styles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Sorolla was fascinated by fashion, and the way women presented themselves at the seaside, in their homes, in cafes and on city streets; his letters home to his wife from his sojourns in Paris report on new trends and the dresses he was going to bring home for her and his daughters.Sorolla''s interest in fashion is obvious in his work, even when it is not ostensibly his subject; the women who appear in his canvasesbathed in flickering light and registered in loose, dynamic brushstrokespresent an evocative catalog of the day''s trends in dress, jewelry and accessories. Gossamer sashes blowing in sea air, dizzyingly delicate lace embroidery, and pleated bodicesSorolla captured a sumptuous parade of styles in his paintings.Lavishly produced and richly illustrated, Sorolla and Fashion brings together paintings by the artist and a selection of related clothing from the period. Including works drawn from public and private collections in Spain and abroad, this volume focuses on the female portraits that the artist executed between 1890 and 1920from intimate pictures of his family to more formal portrait commissions.Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (18631923) has been called the painter of light for the shimmering, luminous quality of his large-scale Impressionist paintings of contemporary social life. Traveling between Spain, Paris and the United States throughout his career, Sorolla combined an academic training, attention to the quality of daily life in his native Valencia and an awareness of international art trends in his work.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe first monograph dedicated to the artistic journey of Sicilian-born Antonino Bove (b.1945), one of Italy’s most multifaceted contemporary artists, and his research into the sphere of dreaming and death. In the early 1960s, Antonino Bove began using a photographic camera to produce prints, and assembled images and texts, integrating materials like wax, tar, gauze, and different pigments into his paintings in addition to small objects and glass. His work is charged with an ethereal, psychological, and metaphysical sense of poetry. During the following decade, this orientation was intensified with deeper research into ethno-anthropology, characterised by social, political and historical elements. But the artist’s principal source of fascination was his utopian artistic project aimed at saving mankind from physical death, and at the same time, saving the universe itself.
