Hatje Cantz gmp × Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner

Book SynopsisThe first volume of the series chronicling the work of architects gmp · Von Gerkan, Marg and Partner was published in 1978, while 2008 saw the publication of the eleventh and most recent volume in the series. More than a decade later, the series is at last picking up where it left off: volume twelve of the monograph documents the projects built between 2007 and 2011, including numerous sports facilities around the world, from the three stadiums erected for the soccer world championships in 2010 in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, and Durban, South Africa; to the buildings for the World University Games in 2011 in Shenzhen, China; to the Olympic stadium in Kiev. Those, however, are just a few of the sixty-five projects found in this richly illustrated volume: transportation facilities such as the Hamburg Airport and the West Train Station in Tianjin, China, as well as iconic cultural buildings such as the Chinese National Museum, the Hanoi Museum, the China Maritime Museum in Lingang, and the grand theatres in Chongqing and Qingdao are also detailed. • FGP Atelier: Progression

    Hatje Cantz FGP Atelier: Progression

Book SynopsisFGP Atelier is a global practice led by Mexican architect Francisco Gonzalez Pulido whose mission is to contribute to social and economic advancement through the alignment of the core principles of Design, Science and Technology. The work of The Atelier is guided by Transparency, Openness and Freedom. These values are reflected in the approach to process and collaborations, as well as in the buildings and spaces that result. Logic, Intuition, Multidisciplinary Collaboration, Scientific Research and Work Experience drive the design of Spaces that are Active as well as Infrastructure and Urban Networks that respond to Atmosphere, Ecology, Comfort, Economy, Culture and the Technological Context. In working towards the dissolution of archetypical interventions, the Experience of these spaces and buildings is valued over Typology in order to ground the ultimate value in human existence. Progression presents a series of projects and related essays that illustrate the principles that guide the work of FGP Atelier. Through examining these principles, the themes, ideas, and goals that are common to the projects emerge and provide a means of understanding how a diverse set of buildings relate as well as what might come next. The book is divided into three sections: Values, Network, and Ambition. “Values” is comprised of three chapters that discuss sustainability, the practice, and ethics. “Network” is comprised of four chapters that discuss how technical design is influenced by context, the alternative futures that planning can offer, the role that infrastructure plays in creating equitable cities, and challenges facing housing in the future. The final section, “Ambition” suggests ways that the discipline of architecture can evolve. Ultimately, the goal of this book is to be provocative on multiple levels. It should inspire the reader through the completed buildings executed in often challenging conditions. At the same time, it should be a catalyst for discourse and debate regarding what should be built and how a philosophy guides a practice, the design of future buildings, and the conservation of existing buildings.

  • MODU: Field Guide to Indoor Urbanism

Hatje Cantz MODU: Field Guide to Indoor Urbanism

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPublished by the interdisciplinary design studio MODU, this reader explores the space between the interior and the exterior. How does the design of interior spaces align with an urban world and vice versa? Where can the boundaries between the interior and the urban be drawn? What role does the environment play in this? For their research and design projects, Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem look at three major cities on different continents: New York, Rome, and Tokyo. MODU leaves behind the binary idea of inside and outside and rather understands architecture as an extension of the environment. Thus, it imagines a hybrid of urban space, architecture, and interior space. The book explores the different geographic locations and presents their own design projects.

Hatje Cantz Promontorio: Architecture and the Reflective

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisArchitecture as Reflective Practice This publication features projects that the partnership PROMONTORIO developed over the past 30 years. Together they constitute an impressive body of work for various places across Europe, Africa, the Middle East and the USA, ranging from city planning, to culture and education, heritage and conservation, commercial and mixed-use, in addition to hospitality and leisure. The idea of a reflective practice, set forth by PROMONTORIO, summons the ability to critically and ethically reflect on its own actions, while engaging in a process of continuous adaptation and learning. Perceived as a kind of "practicing school" for various generations in Portugal, the practice evolved, in both theory and practice, through the idea that deliberate reflection on experience is essential to cultivate a developmental insight on architecture.

  • Winfried Baumann: Cathedrals for Garbage:

Hirmer Verlag Winfried Baumann: Cathedrals for Garbage:

Book SynopsisWith his artistic works, the sculptor Winfried Baumann (* 1956) evokes questions of social responsibility and the perception of contemporary social forms. His subjects are highly topical both as regards content with respect to social and urban-planning visions, and also formally as they cross the borders between fine art and applied design. For over thirty years the sculptor Winfried Baumann has focused his attention in the ecological problems which are increasingly advancing to become a question of survival for civilised society. Refuse, slag from the burning of refuse, waste oil and other waste products from our consumer society are materials which he has been using since the mid-1980s for his three-dimensional works and large-scale installations. In his very extensive group of works “Cathedrals” Winfried Baumann examines, for example, waste-disposal plants for large urban spaces, with the protection and marking of nuclear contaminated sites, waste-disposal facilities for large urban spaces and intermediate urban spaces and with the subject of urban mining.

Hirmer Verlag Egon Eiermann: Deutsche Olivetti

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe ensemble with its prominent twin towers that Egon Eiermann (1904–1970) built in Frankfurt am Main for the Italian office machinery company Olivetti, was the Karlsruhe architect’s last major project. His priorities lay in the slender form, derived from the task, the construction and the material to create a characteristic silhouette. Adriano Olivetti, the son of the company’s founder, valued not only the firm’s products, which became cult objects of Italianità in the field of design and which established the ‘Stile Olivetti’. He also made the same demands regarding quality in architecture. The grandson, Roberto Olivetti, commissioned Eiermann, a famous representative of German postwar Modernism, to design the German branch offices. For the architect the project formed the culmination of his career, while for the Karlsruhe student Klaus Kinold it marked the beginning of a career as a photo g-rapher of architecture. He maintained that he had learned more for his future profession from his teacher Egon Eiermann than from anyone else.

  • Prestel Atlas: Tadao Ando

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis highly original and personal exploration of Tadao Ando's work, one of Japan's leading architects, traverses both the physical and spiritual world. In 2012, Philippe Se clier visited Tadao Ando's iconic Church of the Light, and was immediately compelled to journey around the world to further study the architect's buildings. This unique presentation of Ando's work is the result of what turned into a nine-year project to photograph 130 buildings. Walking around each structure, trying to find the proper framing, helped Se clier understand Ando's genius for siting and composition. Loosely organized by chronology, each building is represented in numerous black and white images, arranged like a mosaic on the page. These fragmented views correspond to Ando's own philosophy of the logic of structure and geometry. This "atlas" embraces not only the geographic but also thematic range of Ando's oeuvre-from transit stations in Tokyo and Kobe to art museums in Fort Worth, Texas and Provence, France; from an artists' retreat on the Mexican coast to the now-demolished Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester, England; from a theater in Milan, Italy, to an upscale restaurant in New York City. Se clier's photographs of Ando's numerous religious structures brilliantly illustrate his use of light and shadow to evoke spiritual depth and timelessness while his short texts offer concise observations of each building. A helpful appendix pinpoints the geographic diversity and range of Ando's oeuvre.

Book SynopsisWe live on the ground and with the ground. It feeds us and it cools the earth’s atmosphere. We need it for housing, we use it for leisure and for work: without free access to land our economic model would not work. But this has changed significantly since the global financial market crisis. Since conservative investments lost their economical appeal, our land has become an international asset in high demand. Rising rents are one of the main symptoms. But essentially, this affects far more: Our social market economy, our community, and a successful approach to climate change are at stake. The main part of the book is a manual covering 36 different aspects of the land issue, featuring clear graphics and categorized into the three sub-areas of climate, economy, and the common good. Five essays and one interview by well-known authors provide references and possible solutions for one of the most pressing questions of our time.

Book SynopsisThe future of cities and their spaces lies in the redevelopment of existing housing stock and its associated transformation tasks. The discipline of urban planning needs to reposition itself, and—at the intersection of climate change and the mobility revolution—seek to champion the cause of increased participation and greater resilience. How can challenges be overcome in the face of more stringent planning requirements, faster implementation times, and limited resources? Renowned experts from the fields of urban policy, city management, and both practical and academic urban planning discussed the future of cities and urban planning at three symposia hosted by the Professor Albert Speer Foundation. Their arguments encourage us to leave behind established patterns of thinking and approach the tasks of the future with visionary ideas.

Book SynopsisBilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) The ICC Berlin is a Gesamtkunstwerk, a giant time capsule that has been waiting for a new usage concept for almost a decade. Planned in the 1960s and opened in 1979, the exhibition building—designed by Ursulina Schüler-Witte and Ralf Schüler, and encompassing Frank Oehring’s incomparable wayfinding system—remains an attentiongrabbing structure. While the building’s brutalist exterior overwhelms the viewer, its interior conveys an air of calm, offering a view of the suddenly quieted traffic through its panoramic windows. This volume of photographs by Zara Pfeifer is dedicated to documenting the interior of the building. Taking an unsentimental approach, Pfeifer records the largely unchanged inner appearance of the building that has been variously dubbed the Giant of Witzleben, the Battleship Charlottenburg, or the Hall of Megalomania. Her images develop a sense for the building’s noteworthy elements and capture the liminal condition in which it has been suspended for years.

Book SynopsisThe foundational research work Der Eckhausgrundriss by the Deutsches Institut für Stadtbaukunst categorizes examples of corner building layouts from the past 200 years. With the help of these varied floor plans, it explains the principles to bear in mind when designing urban corner buildings. As such, it serves as an architectural aid in the design of corner buildings—an essential element of urban blocks—as well as clarifying the relationship between these buildings and the morphology of the city. The editors demonstrate that thoughtfully planned corner buildings, whether free-standing or attached, are required for the design of clearly defined urban spaces, as they have decisive impact on the spatial quality of the adjoining streets and squares. The third edition of this volume expands the collection of corner building floor plans with examples realized by twenty-nine architects in recent years, as well as a number of classic corner building layouts. In doing so, it further showcases the renewed importance of this type of building in contemporary architectural practice.

  • Gesamtkunstwerke: Architecture by Arne Jacobsen

Arnoldsche Gesamtkunstwerke: Architecture by Arne Jacobsen

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe architecture by Arne Jacobsen and Otto Weitling is of outstanding importance for post-war modernism in Germany. The calibre of their projects, however, has been forgotten. Gesamtkunstkwerke closes this gap in the appreciation of their work with a comprehensive presentation of seven out of eight German projects by the Danish master architects. Jacobsen and Weitling’s Scandinavian functionalism is a reflection of the visions of the former FRG – designs and commissions grounded in democracy, prestige and efficiency. The publication also takes stock of how the legacy of late modernism is being handled. The journey through the architects’ locales leads us to the sea, to model towns and to the intricacies of modernism, prompting a debate in accordance with Otto Weitling: ‘Pros and cons would be a positive sign because a building that isn’t talked about is usually not worth talking about.’ Text in English and German.

Book SynopsisMaria Lassnig’s biography documents her boundary-breaking journey as an artist, from her humble beginnings in Austria to her exposure to international art in the 1940s, and on to New York, where, together with Louise Bourgeois, she plunged into the exploding women’s movement there. Later in life she returned to Austria, she became the first woman professor of painting in the German-speaking countries Lassnig caused a sensation with numerous solo exhibitions, from the Venice Biennale to the Documenta to the MoMA in NY.Lassnig’s story is both exemplary and extraordinary for a woman of her generation—exemplary in terms of the hurdles and pitfalls that women in general, and female artists in particular, had to face in those years. She struggled her whole life against the usual stereotypes about women: in her youth, against her mother’s desire that she “marry up”; in relationships with men, against the requirement of putting her own needs aside to nurture and care for her partner’s ego; in the art business, against having to play the role of the sweet and pretty girl; as a university teacher, against having to play the “mother figure”; and as an old woman, against the image of “odd old lady” and the “grande dame.”    Even though she herself wanted to be an artist, not a female artist, her life story is extraordinary because she was finally, despite it all, able to assert herself as an artist and a woman due to her outstanding talent, her persistence, and her single-mindedness.

Vitra Design Museum Kazuo Shinohara: The Umbrella House Project

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Umbrella House is the smallest residential home by Japanese architect and mathematician Kazuo Shinohara (1925–2006). This book tells the story of his unique masterpiece, which was first built in Tokyo in 1961. More than sixty years later, a stroke of good fortune made it possible to save the Umbrella House from demolition and move it to a new location, where it now stands on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany). The wooden house’s post-and-beam construction references traditional Japanese domestic and temple architecture. Experts from Japan and Europe supervised the dismantling of the house in Tokyo and its reassembly in Weil am Rhein. The book traces the long journey of the Umbrella House in lavish illustrations including impressions from 1960s Japan, architectural designs and plans, and photographs that document its dismantling and reassembly or show the house in its new location. Texts by Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA), Shin-ichi Okuyama, and David B. Stewart discuss the Umbrella House against the background of Japanese architectural discourse between 1960 and the present. "The strength of my conviction that A House is a Work of Art was born of the struggle with this small house. I wished to express the force of space contained in the doma [earthen-floor room] of an old Japanese farmhouse, this time by means of the geometric structural design of a karakasa [oiled-paper Japanese umbrella]." Kazuo Shinohara in a text on the Umbrella House published in October 1962 in the Japanese architecture journal Shinkenchiku (vol. 37, no. 10; first published in English in February 1963 in The Japan Architect, vol. 38, no. 2).
