Quart Publishers Gus Wustemann
Book SynopsisA penchant for experimentation, transparency and sculptural presence are the salient features of the buildings of Gus Wüstemann, who has offices in Zurich and Barcelona. One striking building is the residential house on Langrütstrasse in Zurich. Elongated living spaces across the building are formed topographically, as it were, on their longitudinal walls, and the interiors radiate a raw sensuality.Text in English and German.

Quart Publishers Mikou Studio – Paris: De aedibus international 29
Book SynopsisThe twin sisters Selma Mikou and Salwa Mikou founded their own Paris office in 2006 – after working for many years for Jean Nouvel and Renzo Piano. Each project primarily aims to liberate itself from preconceived forms in order to create original solutions that focus on the dimension of an emotional spatial experience. The architects have produced numerous prominent buildings in this way, including the Balsanéo Aquatics Center in Châteauroux (2021), which was developed as a dynamic figure that spans the boulevard like a bridge to overlook the unique landscape of the Indre region. Text in English and German.

Quart Publishers Architekt Krischanitz
Book SynopsisAdolf Krischanitz is undoubtedly considered one of the most important representatives of the vibrant and widely regarded Viennese architectural scene in the 1980s and 1990s. A key work in the oeuvre of Krischanitz is the project Quai Zurich Campus, the headquarters of the Zurich Insurance Group (Zurich) on Mythenquai, which opened in 2021. It is also the final project implemented by Krischanitz's Zurich branch. This book presents the hitherto unpublished project in detail, using plans and extensive series of images to shed light on Krischanitz's architectural stance, which is based on creating something new from existing structures, as well as an inherent, deep-rooted cultural responsibility. The design approach is demonstrated with examples from distinct thematic fields and illustrated with construction details and quotes. An essay by Hubertus Adam and interviews with Adolf Krischanitz, as well as other colleagues, highlight the successful path that Krischanitz has taken in Switzer

Quart Publishers Brandenberger Kloter
Book SynopsisA series of residential buildings and four school buildings have been created by Basel architects Oliver Brandenberger and Adrian Kloter since 2011. They are all characterised by a virtuoso interplay of raw and finely crafted materials. The renovations are also characterised by a subtle merging of old and new. The most recent examples are the kindergarten and the school in Birrwil: here, concrete and wood were combined seemingly without hesitation, resulting in a harmonious, poetic expression. Text in English and German.

Quart Publishers Sollberger Bogli
Book SynopsisFor each building presented in the volume, Biel architects Ivo Sollberger and Lukas Bögli describe a central idea that aptly symbolises the project, referring to the buildings themselves, which carry a narrative force within them. The rows of seats at the new Stade de la Tuilière in Lausanne, for example, are housed in a mighty gestural shell. And the structure of the Raiffeisenbank in Sonceboz-Sombeval appears as an impressive, dynamically-structured crystalline sculpture. Text in English and German.

Quart Publishers Stefan Wülser +
Book SynopsisFor Zurich architect Stefan Wülser, architecture is not reduced to the craft of designing and implementing the design, but also involves thinking about its socio-cultural significance in contemporary society. With the house in Bassersdorf, for example, he developed a programmatic building that rises above an existing supporting structure in a direct, bricollage-like construction that is gestural and expressive. With an article by Tibor Joanelly. Text in English and German.

Quart Publishers Masswerk Architekten: De aedibus 102
Book SynopsisBenedikt Rigling, René Bosshard and Matthias Baumann are the founders of Masswerk Architekten, which has been based in Lucerne since 2003 and in Zurich since 2008. In addition to residential buildings, a number of public buildings have been created over the years – in particular school buildings, retirement centres and municipal facilities – which are characterised by a broad architectural repertoire and meticulous design work. Two residential buildings in the middle of a city park in Lucerne appear sculptural in their reduced structures, with floor plans fitted intelligently and naturally into the building volumes. The Baufeld G complex on Europaallee in Zurich, a significant urban development, inscribes itself unobtrusively in the cityscape with its rhythmic façades. To be completed in 2021, the Burghalde secondary school centre in Baden will accommodate 1,000 pupils in a historic park setting with protected buildings. With an article by Karl R. Kegler. Text in English and German.

Quart Publishers Darlington Meier
Book SynopsisDarlington Meier Architekten operate confidently on a variety of scales from housing to urban-planning interventions. The Zurich office's sense of the effect of classic concepts characterises its designs, as do its harmonious use of materials and the goal of creating locations with a specific identity. The architects are clearly influenced by Peter Zumthor, in whose practice they both worked as Project Managers before founding their own office in 2004. Their design for the Mathilde Escher Home for disabled adults in Zurich is an example of confident urban-planning placement that is equally able to ensure an agreeable residential atmosphere.Text in English and German.

Quart Publishers Soppelsa
Book Synopsissoppelsa Architekten focuses on the relationship between spaces – their qualities, materialisation, proportions and light guidance – and the project programme. Already in the early years after founding their office in 2012, the brothers Mario and Nino Soppelsa managed to apply that approach in a number of competition successes. In 2015, the semi-detached house in Esslingen was their first constructed project. However, their work is not limited to housing and also includes successful projects on all scales: their Hagmannareal Winterthur-Seen residential estate has won several awards, while their newly constructed Oberrüti double sports hall was included in the list of Best Architects 2023. Text in English and German.

Quart Publishers Das Bewusstsein des Ortes
Book SynopsisIn his office Urbana, Bangladesh, Kashef Chowdhury designs architecture that is rooted in the history and nature of the location. Nature in this sense not only consists of vegetation, plants and forests, but also the spiritual and cultural context of a specific environment and landscape. The range of his works includes the transformation of ships, the development of housing and the construction of mosques, museums and corporate headquarters. All of his projects have the common feature that they are based on comprehensive research work, aimed at applying an awareness of a specific location and its nature to achieve a high degree of innovation and original expression. This combination of traditional building styles and contemporary architecture often has an inspirational effect. Das Bewusstsein des Ortes /The Consciousness Of Place is Chowdhury’s philosophical engagement with his own understanding of architecture, based on his research and lectures. It focuses on the significance of architecture, which is able to connect us to nature and liberate us from hectic urban life. Buildings and workplaces should be transformed into oases of peace and relaxation in order to benefit from nature’s regenerative and relaxing qualities. Chowdhury stresses the need to listen to nature and appreciate its beauty. Accordingly, he prefers natural materials in his projects, while also using the interplay of light and shadow as a key element to create spaces that inspire us to pause and think. This publication is a manifesto of a form of architecture that harmonises with the respective location, reflecting the identity of its culture and people. Chowdhury regards his task not so much as work and more as an activity stemming from his love of an art form that serves the people – which he believes is the nature of architecture. In recent years, Chowdhury’s constructed works have attracted international attention and have been awarded prizes such as the 2022 RIBA International Prize and the 2016 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. Park Books Lux Guyer—Obere Schiedhalde: Renovation of a
Book SynopsisLux Guyer (1894–1955) was the first female architect to establish her own studio in Switzerland in 1924. One of her key designs is the Obere Schiedhalde, a single-family home above Küsnacht near Zurich. Completed in 1929 and temporarily occupied by Guyer and her family themselves, it is a variation on her legendary SAFFA-Haus of 1928. Between 2012 and 2018, the building itself as well as the surrounding garden were extensively and carefully restored by Basel-based architecture firm Christ & Gantenbein together with Sven Richter, co-founder of Richter Tobler Architects in Basel. Working in close collaboration with the Canton of Zurich’s office for the preservation of historic monuments, they also called in experts for a historically conscious overhaul of the building’s interior design, colour scheme, furniture, and garden design. Together with the current owners, the architects made it their mission to not only preserve this significant architectural monument of Swiss Modernism, but also make it accessible to the public through this book. Conceived by graphic designers Ludovic Balland and Annina Schepping, it offers an in-depth documentation of the renovated Obere Schiedhalde. Some 200 photographs of the house, garden, interior details, and furniture, as well as historic and newly drawn plans are supplemented with texts in German and English that tell the story of the building and the entire undertaking of its restoration. Text in English and German.

Park Books Alexander Brenner – Villas and Houses 2015–2021:
Book SynopsisOnly few architecture firms in Europe have addressed the villa as a building type as consistently and with such formal rigor as Stuttgart-based Alexander Brenner Architects. The firm is widely known for designs characterised by plastic-geometric facades often resembling constructivist tableaux. What all of Alexander Brenner’s designs have in common is a truly holistic approach to the task. A house’s interior, kitchen, cupboards and other built-in furniture, is attended to with the same care for detail as its exterior. Corresponding gardens with curved sensual forms surround, and contrast, Brenner’s bright white cubic architectural sculptures. This new monograph follows-up on two successful previous volumes published in 2011 and 2015, and features five buildings realised between 2015 and 2021, including the architect’s own home in Stuttgart, the Brenner Research House. They are all documented in rich detail through striking photography, standardised plans and visualisations, as well as concise texts. An essay by Alexander Brenner rounds out this volume that serves again as a source of inspiration for anyone with an interest in residential architecture. Text in English and German.

Park Books Roger Boltshauser - Response
Book SynopsisZurich-based Boltshauser Architekten, which also runs a branch office in Munich, is one of most successful and idiosyncratic Swiss design firms. Precise examination of materials and their constructive potential is combined in their buildings with a profound understanding of ecological issues. Many of their realised designs of varied scale and typology have won international awards. Founder Roger Boltshauser has set himself the goal of finding new forms and solutions for the architectural challenges of our time. The elegant book Roger Boltshauser - Response reviews 12 of Boltshauser Architekten’s key and recent buildings in a three-step presentation of plan, photograph, and sketch. Italian Swiss architecture photographer Luca Ferrario’s atmospheric images, Roger Boltshauser’s own artistic hand drawings, and the sections, axonometries, and floor plans produce a multilayered picture of the practice’s oeuvre. Text in English, German, and French.

De Gruyter wohnen 60 70 80: Junge Denkmäler in Deutschland

Hatje Cantz Urban-Think Tank: The Architect and the City:
Book SynopsisUrban pilot projects from the informal city! Urban-Think Tank (UTT), an interdisciplinary design practice emerging from the turbulent political environment of Chávez-era Caracas, has pursued projects in Latin America, Europe, and Africa for almost twenty years. Their diverse work positioned the firm at the forefront of a social turn in architecture in the late 1990's, with concrete urban interventions encouraging social cohesion in the megacities of the Global South and Europe’s evolving metropoles. U-TT has also produced numerous media projects that harness film, theatre, exhibitions, and print to create new discursive spaces and question how our cities are shaped, and for whom. Most notable is its work on the squatted skyscraper for which the firm shared the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2012. This book looks forward as well as back, imagining new spaces for a hyper-urbanized world and gaining insight from informal settlements, spatial play, and artistic interventions in public space.

Hatje Cantz Manifesta 13 Marseille: Le Grand Puzzle
Book SynopsisThe European Nomadic Biennial Manifesta takes place every two years in a different European city. The biennial rethinks the relations between culture and society, investigating and catalyzing positive social change in Europe through contemporary culture in a continuous dialogue with its host city. Manifesta’s founding director, Hedwig Fijen invited the architectural bureau MVRDV led by Winy Maas to develop an urban research of the city of Marseille. This new methodology, is a manner to decipher the complex settings of the cities that invite the biennial. In the study, multilayered structures of religion, ethnicity, geography, culture and politics are explored. Breaking away from its particular focus on art and culture, Manifesta has become an interdisciplinary and participatory program that aims to embrace holistic approaches that are uniting political, cultural and ecological questions within the host city.
