Book SynopsisThe mere mention of the title Star Wars can evoke all kinds of feelings and memories in a person. The trilogy that thrilled everyone in the late 70s and early 80s, the highly criticised prequels from the early 2000s, and the newer sequels are just added fuel to make the work of George Lucas shine dazzlingly in our lives. This book is an illustrated tribute to the fictional universe created by George Lucas, in which readers will find forty portraits of its most outstanding characters, such as Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Yoda, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, Rey, Stormtrooper, and Wilhuff Tarkin - along with sixty unpublished alternative posters! Twenty-seven artists from around the world show us their most personal vision through one or more illustrations, additionally expressing in a sentence what Star Wars means to them. In this way, many artists achieve their desire to share their life and work, and return the favor to what has inspired them, in turn becoming part of the legend, for a long, long time.

Hoaki Design, Create, Thrill: The Power of Graphic

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this book, the author presents the perspectives of several authors and designers on how to achieve an emotional graphic design. Even though they are not absolute truths and there is no guarantee that if a designer follows those principles people will be emotional attached to the work, they will certainly bring them closer to that. Emotional design is a design that reflects on the crucial role emotions have in the human ability to understand the world, promising to enhance the quality of life of its audience. A successful emotion-driven design improves the relationship between the audience and the ‘product’, creating deep emotional bounds between the two. There are already many theories talking about emotional design in product design, industrial design, and even web design. But what about graphic design? This book aims to bring the graphic designer closer to delivering an emotion-driven design.

Book SynopsisAfter the introduction into geometry, perspective and the representation of materials in vol 1, this volume constitutes a thorough and complete study on the fundamental aspects of graphically depicting a wide variety of jewellery. Having learned about geometry, perspective and representation of materials in the first volume, this second book in this two-part series delves deeper into the process of designing jewellery, from the first sketch to the final representation, with special emphasis on how to work on ideas, plan a collection, and design and depict a wide variety of pieces. The fundamentals of drawing different pieces, such as necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets, are carefully explained and illustrated in the book, which includes all the technical details to be taken into consideration when planning a jewellery piece, from the executive point of view. While the first volume focused on the tools needed to be able to accurately convey ideas, draw different materials, facets and effects, and master the use of colour, this publication tackles the process from the initial idea, based in natural or geometrical forms, to the final drawing of the completed piece, including illustration techniques and sources of inspiration, all aspects that will stir up the reader's creativity. It is the ultimate tool and resource for jewellery students and professionals, and even illustrators in search of professional guidelines in freehand drawing and painting techniques when representing jewellery. It''s an act of confrontation with the alien outside world and with one's own speechless dreams and emotions. Out of stock

Book SynopsisAlain Godon has been given carte blanche at the Musée Départemental Matisse to focus on the journey made by Matisse in 1930 from New York to Tahiti, drawing the reader into his colourful and joyful universe. A contemporary artist of international renown, Alain Godon (Bourges, 1964) has been given carte blanche at the Musée Départemental Matisse to focus on the journey made by Matisse in 1930 from New York to Tahiti. This re-appropriation of Matisse's journey, including his discovery of New York and its architecture, as well as Polynesia, is paralleled by a questioning of the notion of the term 'journey' itself and its different meanings. With paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and installations made especially for the exhibition, Alain Godon offers us works which, although they can be immediately understood, are in fact far more complex, unveiling a unique universe that for those who take the time to look deeper is home to tales of everyday life. Using the same singular imagination he shares with Matisse, Godon reveals his desire to bring joy and happiness into his work. Text in English and French.

Amsterdam University Press Woodcuts as Reading Guides: How Images Shaped

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn the first half of the sixteenth century, the Low Countries saw the rise of a lively market for practical and instructive books that targeted non-specialist readers. This study shows how woodcuts in vernacular books on medicine and astrology fulfilled important rhetorical functions in knowledge communication. These images guided readers’ perceptions of the organisation, visualisation, and reliability of knowledge. Andrea van Leerdam uncovers the assumptions and intentions of book producers to which images testify, and shows how actual readers engaged with these illustrated books. Drawing on insights from the field of information design studies, she scrutinises the books’ material characteristics, including their lay-outs and traces of use, to shed light on the habits and interests of early modern readers. She situates these works in a culture where medicine and astrology were closely interwoven in daily life and where both book producers and readers were exploring the potential of images.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Note to the reader Abbreviations Codes used for examined editions and copies Introduction Chapter 1. Book SynopsisVermeersch's drawings and paintings are reminiscent of a long tradition of Northern European painting inspired by masters like Breughel and Bosch. Drawing sensitively on dreams, rituals and impressions of life the artist creates meticulously crafted compositions. I like seeing my work as fragments and hints of lost epic times and vernacular societies, as parts or details ripped out of a larger context, the artist says, referring to himself as a archeologist of sorts who is in search for the story between the few scattered remains I have collected and inventoried. The viewer is invited to be part of this search and to put together the pieces of their own story for which Tinus Vermeersch provides his finds and fragments. Tinus Vermeersch studied Painting at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten, Gent, 1994-96 and Sculpture at the Hoger Instituut voor Beeldende Kunsten, Sint-Lucas, Gent 1996-99. Vermeersch's work are in many private collections and in public collections as the MuZee, Oostende, Broelmuseum Kortrijk, MUba Tourcoing France, The FranksSuss Collection London, Vlaams Parlement Brussel, Stad Harelbeke and the Provincie West-Vlaanderen.
