Taylor & Francis Lessons in Politics and Ethics from the Public Hospital
Book SynopsisLessons in Politics and Ethics from the Public Hospital takes us behind the scenes of one of America's last major public hospitals - San Francisco General.Drawing on his unique position as both an anthropologist and a psychiatric nurse with 26 years of experience, Foster reveals the complex interplay between compassionate care and institutional constraints that defines modern public healthcare. Through vivid storytelling and keen analytical insight, this book illuminates how caregivers navigate the daily challenges of treating over 100,000 patients annually - from trauma victims to the mentally ill, from the indigent to the disenfranchised. He presents an innovative conceptual framework that delineates four essential models for the care process: normalization, care, trauma response, and management. This compelling narrative explores: The delicate balance between compassionate care and fiscal constraints; how caregivers develop an ethics of practice in challenging conditions; the hospital's evolution in response to public health crises; the intersection of societal ills with medical and traumatic illness; the future of public healthcare in America. Both a deeply human story and a critical analysis of our healthcare system, this book offers an unprecedented look at how a major public hospital functions, adapts, and perseveres in an era of increasing precarity. Essential reading for healthcare professionals, policymakers, anthropologists, and anyone concerned with the future of public health in America.

Book SynopsisThe New York Times bestseller – with a new afterword about early specialization in youth sports – from the author of Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World. The debate is as old as physical competition. Are stars like Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Serena Williams genetic freaks put on Earth to dominate their respective sports? Or are they simply normal people who overcame their biological limits through sheer force of will and obsessive training? In this controversial and engaging exploration of athletic success and the so-called 10,000-hour rule, David Epstein tackles the great nature vs. nurture debate and traces how far science has come in solving it. Through on-the-ground reporting from below the equator and above the Arctic Circle, revealing conversations with leading scientists and Olympic champions, and interviews with athletes who have rare genetic mutations or physical traits, Epstein forces us to rethink the very nature of athleticism.

University Press of Florida Leprosy: Past and Present
Book SynopsisThrough an unprecedented multidisciplinary and global approach, this book documents the dramatic several-thousand-year history of leprosy using bioarchaeological, clinical, and historical information from a wide variety of contexts, dispelling many long-standing myths about the disease.Drawing on her 30 years of research on the infection, Charlotte Roberts begins by outlining its bacterial causes, how it spreads, and how it affects the body. She then considers its diagnosis and treatment, both historically and in the present. She also looks at the methods and tools used by paleopathologists to identify signs of leprosy in skeletons. Examining evidence in human remains from many countries, particularly in Europe and including Britain, Hungary, and Sweden, Roberts demonstrates that those affected were usually buried in the same cemeteries as their communities, contrary to the popular belief that they were all ostracized or isolated from society into leprosy hospitals. Other myths addressed by Roberts include the assumptions that leprosy can't be cured, that leprosy is no longer a problem today, and that what is called "leprosy" in the Bible is the same illness as the disease with that name now. Roberts concludes by projecting the future of leprosy, arguing that researchers need to study the disease through an ethically grounded evolutionary perspective. Importantly, she advises against use of the word "leper" to avoid perpetuating stigma today surrounding people with the infection and resulting disabilities. Leprosy will stand as the authoritative source on the subject for years to come.A volume in the series Bioarchaeological Interpretations of the Human Past: Local, Regional, and Global Perspectives, edited by Clark Spencer Larsen.

Book SynopsisIn Curvology, Cambridge Veterinary Anatomist David Bainbridge applies the science of evolutionary biology to women's bodies, to explain why the human female is the only female animal to have curves and how these curves rule our lives, by influencing not only sexual selection but also social hierarchy and self-image. Written in lucid and engaging prose, Bainbridge's unique brand of popular science also draws on illuminating references from zoology, art history, contemporary media culture, and a range of first-person interviews with some actual human women. Offering a level-headed and fresh perspective on a contentious issue, Curvology is a fascinating, controversial, and highly newsworthy read.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Managed Body: Developing Girls and Menstrual Health in the Global South
Book SynopsisThe Managed Body productively complicates ‘menstrual hygiene management’ (MHM)—a growing social movement to support menstruating girls in the Global South. Bobel offers an invested critique of the complicated discourses of MHM including its conceptual and practical links with the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) development sector, human rights and ‘the girling of development.’ Drawing on analysis of in-depth interviews, participant observations and the digital materials of NGOs and social businesses, Bobel shows how MHM frames problems and solutions to capture attention and direct resources to this highly-tabooed topic. She asserts that MHM organizations often inadvertently rely upon weak evidence and spectacularized representations to make the claim of a ‘hygienic crisis’ that authorizes rescue. And, she argues, the largely product-based solutions that follow fail to challenge the social construction of the menstrual body as dirty and in need of concealment. While cast as fundamental to preserving girls’ dignity, MHM prioritizes ‘technological fixes’ that teach girls to discipline their developing bodies vis a vis consumer culture, a move that actually accommodates more than it resists the core problem of menstrual stigma.Trade Review“The author effortlessly links postcolonial feminist thinking to MHM, which is commendable for a book that hails from the global north.” (Aysha Farhana Chakkampully, Gender and Research, Vol. 22 (2), 2021)“The Managed Body would be a valuable addition to courses on gender and health, embodiment, critical development studies, medical anthropology, and reproductive health and rights. This book’s accessible style also makes it appropriate for a much wider audience, and The Managed Body belongs on the reading lists of development professionals, feminist activists and anyone else interested in gender, health, and development.” (Leigh Senderowicz, Gender & Society, Vol. 20 (10), 2020)“This book will not only appeal to those interested in the topic but also to those who research race, globalization, transnationalism, rhetoric, feminism, public health, gender, activism, or economics.” (Berkley Conner, Affilia, December 6, 2019)“The book is a timely, important and provides a fascinating read about contemporary feminism, activism and capitalism.” (Camilla Mørk Røstvik, Social History of Medicine, Vol. 32 (4), November, 2019)Table of ContentsChapter 1: Introduction: What a Girl Needs….- Part I: Context.- Chapter 2: The Girling of Development.- Chapter 3: Making Menstruation Matter in the Global South: Mapping a Critical History of the Menstrual Hygiene Management Movement.- Part II: Framing the Problem: Stories of Risk, Risk of Stories.- Chapter 4: “Can You Imagine?” Making the Case for a Bloody Crisis.- Chapter 5: The Spectacle of the ‘Third World Girl’ and the Politics of Rescue.- Part III.Framing the Solution: Developing the ‘Good Body’.- Chapter 6: “Dignity Can’t Wait”: Building a Bridge to Human Rights.- Chapter 7: Disciplining Girls through the Technological Fix: Modernity, Markets, Materials.- Chapter 8: Beyond the Managed Body: Putting Menstrual Literacy at the Center.- Appendix A: Methods.- Appendix B: Notes on Language.

Book SynopsisA philosophical examination and celebration of the human hand.Trade ReviewIt's hard to imagine any other book that could tell us so much about ourselves. Raymond Tallis is a man unusual in modern medicine. His career has been devoted to caring for, studying, and advancing the health of older people in society. But while working as a Professor of Geriatric medicine at the University of Manchester, he has developed a parallel career - as a philosopher, critic, poet and novelist - largely unknown to his clinical brotherhood and sisterhood. Indeed, important though his medical work has been, it is likely that his philosophy, and especially his philosophical anthropology will leave a particularly indelible mark on human affairs. -- Richard Horton Compellingly interesting ! An extraordinary achievement. -- Michael Grant, editor of The Raymond Tallis Reader One of the most intriguing figures in the current intellectual scene. Tallis conjures up a challenging and endlessly fascinating way of thinking about ourselves that should act as a signpost for the future where we might learn once again to glimpse, as our forebears did, the wonder - and mystery - of ourselves.Table of ContentsContents; Acknowledgements; Introduction; Overture; 1 Grasping the Hand; 1.1 Preliminary Grapplings; 1.2 The Manipulative Hand; 1.3 The Knowing Hand; 1.4 The Communicative Hand; 1.5 From Prehension to Apprehension; Part I Brachio-Chiral; 2 The Armed Hand; 2.1 Two Fingers to Over-digitisation; 2.2 The Genius of Reaching; 2.3 Mechanism and Agency; 3 The Talking Hand; 3.1 Introduction: The Sign-making Animal; 3.2 Gesturing; 3.3 Clapping and Other Hand Shouting; 3.4 Handsome; 4 Hand Talking to Hand; 4.1 Manucaption; 4.2 The Dialogue of the Left Hand with the Right; 4.3 The Interlocutors; 4.4 The Hand Talking to its Self or the Self; 5 The Playful Hand; 5.1 Introduction; 5.2 The Carnal Hand; 5.3 Hand Games; 5.4 Post-script: Handy (like); Part II Chiro-Digital; 6 One-finger Exercises; 6.1 Introduction; 6.2 Thumb; 6.3 Index; 6.4 Middle; 6.5 Ring; 6.6 Little; 7 Polydactylic Exercises; 7.1 Introduction: The Ordeal of Precision; 7.2 Two Fingers; 7.3 Three Fingers; 7.4 Four Fingers; 7.5 Five Fingers; 7.6 Ten Fingers; 8 Abstract Digits; 8.1 Introduction and Disclaimer; 8.2 The Number Sense: From Magnitudes to Digits; 8.3 Digits and Digits; 8.4 Units: From Counting to Measurement; 8.5 The Unreasonable Power of the Precision of Abstract Digits; 9The Tool of Tools; 9.1 Prologue: The Self-shaping Hand; 9.2 Tool-using, Tool-making and the Tool of Tools; 9.3 Tools and the Origin of Human Culture; 9.4 Eolith and SuperCray; 9.5 Tools and Language; 9.6 Brain, Tools and Language; 9.7 Beyond Biology and Biologism; 9.8 Epilogue: Handicraft; Appendix: Karl Marx and the Collectivisation of; Human Consciousness in Tools; Part III Towards Chiro-Philosophy; 10 Getting and Grip on the Conscious Human Agent; 10.1 Recapitulation; 10.2 The Dawn of the Conscious Human Agent; 10.3 From Biology to Philosophical Anthropology; Coda; 11 Waving Farewell to the Hand; 11.1 Introduction; 11.2 The Paradox of Handyman: (1) Part of; and Separate from Nature; 11.3 The Paradox of the Handyman: (2) Subject to and Yet Manipulating Nature's Laws; 11.4 The Balance Sheet: (1) Knowledge. Basic Books Unique: The New Science of Human Individuality
Book SynopsisAs a scientist, David Linden had devoted his career to understanding the brain processes and behaviors that are common to us all. That is, until a few years ago, when he found himself on OKCupid. Looking through that vast catalog of human difference, he got to thinking, where does it all come from? Why does one person have perfect pitch, a taste for hoppy beer, and an aversion to bathroom selfies? That is, what makes you, you, and me, me?In Unique, David Linden tells a riveting and accessible story of human individuality. Exploring topics that touch all of our lives-among them sexuality, gender identity, food preferences, biological rhythms, mood, personality, memory, and intelligence-Linden shows that human individuality is not simply a matter of nature versus nurture. Rather, it is a product of the complex, and often counterintuitive, interplay between our genetic blueprints and our experiences. Experience isn't just the how your parents reared you, but the diseases you have had, the foods you have eaten, the bacteria that reside in your body, the weather during your early development, and the technology you've been exposed to. Drawing all those factors together, Linden argues that human individuality is key to how we live as individuals and groups and explores how questions of individuality are informing social discussions of morality, public policy, religion, healthcare, education, and law.Like Carl Zimmer's She Has Her Mother's Laugh and Robert Sapolsky's Behave, Unique unveils a new vista on the intricacies of human existence. But, for all its brilliance and insight, this is no weighty academic tome. Told with Linden's unusual combination of authority and openness, seriousness of purpose and a great sense of humor, Unique sets a new standard for what popular science can be.

Oneworld Publications The Vitamin Complex: Our Obsessive Quest for
Book SynopsisThe discovery of vitamins changed our world dramatically. Terrifying diseases such as scurvy, which had claimed the lives of millions, became preventable and curable. But before long word of these ‘miracles’ had spread from the laboratory and into the hands of food marketers. Decades of over-hyped advertising later and we’ve accepted as fact the idea that dietary chemicals can be used as shortcuts to improving our health. Award-winning journalist Catherine Price goes in search of the truth about vitamins, taking us to vitamin manufacturers, food laboratories and military testing kitchens. In this page-turning investigation of the history, science and future of nutrition, she reveals just how much we still don’t know about vitamins – the way they work in our bodies and the amounts we really need. Engaging, witty and personal, The Vitamin Complex proposes an alternative to our obsessive vitamin-driven approach to nutrition – given our lack of knowledge, the best way to decide what to eat is to stop obsessing and simply embrace this uncertainty head-on.Trade Review'An excellent book...10/10...a deeply satisfying masterpiece of nutrition science writing'. * NHD Magazine *‘Gets to the nub of how we have become nutritionally idiotic… alarming’ * Sunday Times *‘Engaging… makes a compelling case for the importance of eating real food’ * BBC Focus *'Measured, funny and fascinating. . . . If you need vitamins to survive (you do), you should read this book.' * Scientific American *'[An] absorbing and meticulously researched history of the beginnings and causes of our obsession with vitamins and nutrition.' * New York Times *'Behind the bizarre disconnect between rigorous drug regulation and a ‘whatever’ approach to dietary supplements are industry lobbying, Oz-like doctors and politicians on both sides of the aisle whose states benefit from the thousands of jobs provided by the multi-billion-dollar supplement industry. It is not a new story, but Ms. Price gives it a vigorous retelling. She also reminds us that the prophets of vitamania, and their political allies, would all be powerless if it were not for a peculiar kind of deficiency in ourselves that keeps us reaching for ‘a salve against uncertainty.’ Faced with such primal fears, it seems, science is powerless.' * Wall Street Journal *'[Price’s] investigation, full of scurvy-ridden sailors, questionable nutritional supplements and solid science, is both entertaining and enlightening.' * Discover *‘Well told’ * Spectator *‘A much-needed critique of the nation’s obsession with nutritional supplements. Price exposes the less-than-scientific roots of what has become a multi-billion industry, along with the inadequate regulatory oversight that drives unsavory marketing practices. The book concludes with this refreshing advice: get your nutrition from eating real food.’ -- Michele Simon, President of Eat Drink Politics, and author of Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back‘This is a fascinating look at what we know – and mostly what we don’t – about vitamins. You'll never look at the a bottle of multivitamins the same way again.’ -- Emily Oster, author of Expecting Better‘This entertaining and informative book traces the history of vitamins and nutritional diseases . . . Readers interested in health, and those who enjoy Marion Nestle’s books will want to read this work . . . An excellent addition to collections in public and consumer health libraries.’ * Library Journal *‘Catherine Price gives us a journalist’s entertaining romp through the fascinating history of the discovery of vitamins, and their use and marketing as objects of health obsession. Faith in vitamins, she advises, should be tempered by scientific uncertainty and dietary complexity, and the understanding that foods are better sources than pills.’ -- Marion Nestle, Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health at New York University and author of What to Eat'Price’s sharp wit, skillful and vivid translation of science into story, and valiant inquisitiveness (she insists on tasting synthetic vitamins and gets buzzed on the military’s caffeinated meat sticks) make for an electrifying dissection of our vitamin habit in contrast to our irrevocable need for naturally nutrient-rich food.' * Booklist *
