The History Press Ltd Scottish Transport Tokens
Book SynopsisMost transport tokens in Scotland were introduced in the middle of the nineteenth century, but until recent years they did not attract many collectors. The collecting and study of tokens has now very much become a branch of numismatics. The early tokens were usually struck in brass, copper or bronze, but as we moved into the twentieth century celluloid ones were introduced. From celluloid, various forms of plastic and fibre have been used as well as various metals, and this has continued right up to the present day. Tokens were in fact the tickets of their time. Paper tickets did not come into use until about the 1880s and in Glasgow on the tramways from the late 1870s. By selling a number of tokens transport firms were assured of the custom of these passengers. This also saved the conductor or guard, as he was sometimes called, from handling cash and was thus also a security precaution.

The History Press Ltd Flying Past A History of Sheppey Aviation
Book SynopsisThe Isle of Sheppey in north Kent was the birthplace of aviation in the UK and early pioneers, including the Wright Bros and Charles Rolls, gathered on its low, flat ground to undertake experimental flights. By 1909 the Short bros had established the first British aircraft factory and from there events snowballed. By 1911 the first naval aviators began training at nearby Eastchurch, which site became the first Royal Naval Air Station. Its popular first course had over 200 volunteers for just 4 places. The station served with distinction in the war that soon followed, as it did again through WW2, until its closure in the late 1940s. This year aviation enthusiasts will flock to Sheppey to celebrate the centenary of British aviation, enjoying the flypasts and displays of 25 vintage aircraft and other vehicles. This book serves as a timely reminder of the island''s great contribution to the story of flight in the UK.

The History Press Ltd Nymans
Book SynopsisNymans forms one of a group of gardens in the Sussex Weald which were created before the First World War and are still beautiful today, their owners sharing a passion for new material brought back from all over the world by intrepid plant hunters. Ludwig Messel bought Nymans in 1890 and, with his head gardener, James Comber, began extensive planting of exotics, determined to prove that many supposedly tender plants could grow outdoors in Sussex. After 1915, his son, Leonard, carried on planting and raising new hybrids. In 1954 the garden was bequeathed to the National Trust. This historic garden is undoubtedly one of our national treasures and this book pays tribute to its history and beauty.

The History Press Ltd Early Aviation Disasters The Worlds Major
Book SynopsisDavid Gero''s highly successful Aviation Disasters, which reviewed major airliner crashes dating back to 1950, finally has an accompanying volume. Using the same format as its predecessor, Early Aviation Disasters examines major aviation catastrophes that occurred in the early days of commercial flight, prior to 1950. Long before the days of wide-bodied jets and supersonic travel, two, three and four-engine airplanes, flying boats and airships made their way over land and sea, connecting cities, countries and continents in what was then a revolutionary mode of transport. Some of these flights ended in tragedy, and these catastrophes are thoroughly reviewed in this illustrated book. The book recounts the Hindenburg disaster in 1937, the disastrous mid-air collision between an airliner and a fighter aircraft over Washington DC in 1949 and the loss of the British Star Tiger and Star Ariel transports, less than one year apart. Many other less well-know

The History Press Ltd The Wellington Bomber Story
Book SynopsisThe Vickers Wellington was a British twin-engine, long range medium bomber, universally known as the Wimpy'. The only bomber in construction throughout the Second World War, the Wellington played a pivotal role in training and combat from its conception in the 1930s, through active service in the Far Eastern, Mediterranean and German arenas of conflict, until its final use by the RAF in 1953. This book follows the fascinating story of the much-loved and innovatively designed Wellington throughout its life, including many tales from the aircraft's years with Bomber Command. Illustrated with a wide selection of images, both colour and black and white, this book is a fitting tribute to a wonderful servant of the RAF.

The History Press Ltd Bristol Brabazon
Book SynopsisThe Brabazon the name evokes the immediate post-war optimism of civil aviation. The giant airliner was built by Bristol Aircraft in 1949 to cross the Atlantic and serve the empire. However, the plane proved to be a commercial failure when airlines felt that it was too large and expensive to be useful. Large and luxurious, it carried only 60-80 passengers, and with a range of 5,000 miles, a 225ft wing span and eight engines buried in the wings with enough fuel to reach New York, the 100-ton bomber' was more impressive and capable than the B-29: the ultimate passenger airliner was born. Now, with previously unpublished material and illustrations from the original Bristol Brabazon sales brochure, among other sources, the Brabazon's 1930s-style elegance is displayed once again, celebrating its design, construction and sheer luxury. A fitting outcome for such a paragon of post-war optimism and an aircraft still considered by many to be the foremost in propeller-driven civi
