John Hudson Publishing Prints and the Landscape Garden
Book SynopsisThis book considers what prints tell us about the development of the landscape garden in 18th- and early 19th- century Britain. They formed a significant part of the expanding machinery of mass communication and could thus influence taste and spread ideas. This could lead to propaganda, or at least creation of an image the owner of a property found desirable, and reality was consequently often compromised. The illusion of actuality could be achieved by adjustments and techniques employed by artists generally. Even if not entirely representational, a print may reveal much about fashions and attitudes towards the landscape garden. At their best they powerfully convey the atmosphere of a garden as well as the perception and possible idealisation of it. The book breaks new ground, including discussion of techniques of producing a print, marketing, categories of print, and studies of the greatest engravers and a few select gardens that prints illuminate particularly well. Changes can be observed both in the developments in print-making and in the journey of the landscape garden. With 220 prints of the period to illustrate the text, all aspects of the subject are brought to the reader's attention.Trade ReviewMichael Symes's book is so sumptuously designed and produced in hardback landscape format that it warrants a slip case. It teems with illustrations, many in colour, almost all from the author's collection, reflecting his considerable scholarship, its emphasis firmly centred on the 18th century. * Country Life *Table of ContentsPreface 1 Image and Propaganda 2 Printomania 3 Pattern Books 4 Royal Landscapes 5 Stowe 6 Chiswick 7 The London Pleasure Gardens 8 Nuneham Courtenay 9 William Woollett 10 Luke Sullivan, Francois Vivares and Anthony Walker 11 Horace Walpole 12 The Gazetteers 13 Sets of Seats 14 The Picturesque 15 A Miscellany of Prints Select reading Index

Pen & Sword Books Ltd Flight Craft 32 Lockheed C130 Hercules
Book SynopsisKnown as Fat Albert', Lockheed's ubiquitous C-130 Hercules was a product of combat experiences gained during the Korean War, a conflict that highlighted the need for a rugged transport aircraft designed with a do-anything, go-anywhere ethos in mind. First flown in August 1954, the C-130, powered by four turboprop engines mounted underneath a high wing which allowed for effortless loading via a rear ramp, soon proved its worth as a highly versatile aircraft. The easily configured cargo area helped the C-130 stand out from the crowd, and soon variants began to appear, with the first being a ski-equipped resupply aircraft. It was this type of tasking the C-130 excelled at, and soon air movement staff was developing new ways to deploy cargo. This included low-level drops, proving invaluable in aiding isolated disaster-struck areas. Other variants included air-to-air tankers, electronic reconnaissance platforms and weather reconnaissance aircraft. Now produced by Lockheed Martin, the C-

ACC Art Books Tiaras: A History of Splendour
Book Synopsis"The photos here are undeniably spectacular — but the exploration of the costume ball’s history is worth sticking around for, too." —Natural Diamonds Tiaras have always inspired a great fascination and the most beautiful and influential women have been painted, photographed and admired whilst wearing them. Even in the 21st century they are still worn and continue to inspire special poise, elegance and sophistication. This lavishly illustrated book includes exclusive photographs, many reproduced for the first time, of a variety of Royal tiaras together with those of French and Russian Imperial provenance, including four stunning tiaras designed by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria. Geoffrey Munn has also been granted privileged access to the archives of many famous jewellers, including Boucheron, Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels and Fabergé, for his research. The regal images of some of the most prestigious jewels in the world will captivate the reader and ensure turning the page to the next enticing image becomes irresistible. Many of these mesmerising tiaras also have great historical significance and their provenance is fully explained here. Among the contemporary pieces referred to are tiaras belonging to Jamie Lee Curtis, Vivienne Westwood, Elton John and Madonna, that were made by Galliano, Slim Barratt and Versace. The scholarly text, which incorporates more than 400 illustrations, includes chapters on tiaras as crown jewels, Russian style tiaras, tiaras as works of art and the relationship between the tiara and the costume ball. A beautiful book' EDMUND DE WAAL'Beautiful, bewitching and brilliant' LARA MAIKLEMIn Hands of Time, watchmaker and historian Rebecca Struthers welcomes us into the hidden world of watchmaking, and to a history of time that spans centuries and continents. The invention of timepieces was more significant for human culture than the printing press, or even the wheel. They have travelled the world with us, from the depths of the oceans to the summit of Everest, and even to the Moon. They regulate our daily lives and have sculpted the social and economic development of society in surprising and dramatic ways. From her workshop bench, Rebecca explores the ways in which timekeeping has indelibly shaped our attitudes to work, leisure, trade, politics, exploration and mortality, and introduces us to some extraordinary devices, each with their own story to tell. Hands of Time is an intricate exploration of the history, science, philosophy, and craft of timekeeping.Trade Review'5/5 A true joy - an enchanting mixture of memoir and history... A work of staggering complexity and bewildering economy - highly deserving of the time you give it.' * Telegraph *'Every page glitters with details of her experience and the people she has learned from. The book is evidence of a lifelong labour of love, and reading it is time well spent' * Spectator *'A rattling, wonderful, decidedly non-nerdy read for anyone with an interest of how time made us who we are.' * Observer *'What an exquisite book, as beautifully put together as one of the watches whose mechanisms Rebecca Struthers describes with such eloquence and authority. In a world whose digital workings are invisible to us, the joy and genius of craftsmanship, artistry and skill with materials is all the more welcome. What a very wonderful book. -- Stephen FryAn intensely personal, finely-tuned meditation on making and time-keeping. Through the lens of watch-making, a new understanding of our world history emerges. Beautifully written and endlessly fascinating, it feels like this was a story waiting to be written.' -- Tracy BormanAs impeccably crafted and precisely engineered as any of the watches on which the author has worked so lovingly over the years, this book is a joy to behold and a wonder to enjoy. -- Simon WinchesterA masterpiece. As intricate and impressive as the watches it describes. -- James FoxFrom 40,000 year old bone etchings, through the first tick-tock and into the nanoscale atomic world of 21st century clocks, Hands of Time is a meticulously written and captivating history. Struthers brings her unique perspective as artisan and engineer to explore both the evolution of mechanisms and the complicated ways in which timekeeping has changed human life: the more we measure this intangible cosmic property, the more precious it becomes. -- Rebecca Wragg SykesAn enthralling story of time, and of the human passion to understand and control it. Anyone who enjoyed Dava Sobel's Longitude will love it. -- Gavin Francis'The history of timekeeping is treated with a light touch, consisting of one fascinating and frequently romantic story after another... She brings the craft of making and repairing watches to life and even the glossary is an engaging read. Be warned, however: if Hands of Time affects you as it has me, you may find yourself taking up what could be an extremely expensive hobby.' * Country Life *'A gripping history of timekeeping that starts with the personal, but then embarks upon a journey spanning centuries of modern humanity, examining how timepieces have shaped us - not just in service to our quotidian lives, but politically and economically, too. With a scope that reaches from prehistoric 40,000-year-old bone etchings recording lunar cycles to the Dutch horological "forgeries" of her thesis, it is all addressed with a lightness of touch that has seen Dr Struthers' debut scoring "Book of the Week" on BBC Radio 4.' * Mr Porter *'Full of tales of royal intrigue and social history, it charts the story of watchmaking through the centuries and reflects on how time affects us all' * Vogue *'This engaging, rewarding book is full of mechanical complexities and wonderfully interesting details. * Irish Examiner *Skilfully moving between the miniscule world of watchmaking and the sweep of history, Hands of Time is an enlightening study. * Economist *An exquisitely crafted history * Nature *As an engineer I was enthralled by the intricate mechanisms Dr. Struthers brings to life so vividly. Crecy Publishing Propeller Twilight: The Last Generation of
Book SynopsisThis book examines the last generation of high-performance British propeller-driven fighters, types such as the Firecrest, late mark Spitfires and Seafires, Spiteful and Seafang, Sea Fury, late mark Tempests, Hornet and Sea Hornet, M.B.5 and Wyvern. From about 1942 onwards these extraordinary and very complex aeroplanes brought British piston fighter development to its zenith, but then in a very short space of time the new jet engine wiped this generation away. Perhaps it would not have been possible to take piston power any further anyway but the turboprop might have been a longer-term alternative, though in the end the only British type with this form of powerplant would be the Westland Wyvern naval strike fighter.Chapters look at the engines involved including the Rolls-Royce Merlin 130 series, Griffon and Eagle, Napier Sabre and Bristol Centaurus, propellor developments (contra-rotating) and then take each fighter type in turn. The coverage described their development and testing and includes quotes and passes from flight test reports.Additional appendices look at some British one-off designs and testbed programmes, then the only fighter types flown abroad powered by these engine types (the Australian CA-15 and Argentine IAe 30) and finally two similiar unbuilt projects proposed by Sweden (the J 27 Mustang lookalike) and Switzerland (the N-6). Illustrated with over 300 photos, many previously unpublished, this is a must for enthusiasts of World War II aviation and the history of the British fighter.

Pimpernel Press Ltd Gardening in a Changing World: Plants, People and
Book SynopsisOur planet, the Earth, is under threat, with potentially catastrophic consequences for ourselves and the other lifeforms it sustains. Yet Nature itself can still rescue us - with plants playing a pivotal role, in the countryside - and everywhere. In gardens and parks, plants are the mainstay of our relationship with the natural world, and we celebrate them for the pleasures they bring. However, that can be part of the problem: too often we value plants for their aesthetic qualities rather than the vital role they play in the ecology of the Earth. In Gardening in a Changing World Darryl Moore explores how gardens can be better for human beings and for all the other lifeforms that inhabit them. Recent developments in horticulture and plant science show us that we need to rethink our attitude to plants beyond purely aesthetic concerns, and to adopt more holistic approaches to how we design, inhabit and enjoy our gardens. He looks at the history of garden design, to show how we got to where we are today, and recommends ways of changing to new principles of sustainable ecological horticulture. This challenging and important new book will be essential reading for professionals and students of horticulture and garden and landscape design, as well as for anyone interested in making gardens part of the solution to the future of life on Earth.Trade Review‘The most illuminating book on this very important subject.’ -- Cleve West, multi-award-winning garden designer and popular author of books including Our Plot and The Garden of Vegan"I can't recommend this new book enough...a comprehensive and deeply researched account of humans' relationship with plants. And it is a fantastic and up-to-date overview of current trends and approaches in planting design." -- Nigel Dunnett, academic, plantsman, Olympic Park planting designer, author'This book not only acknowledges some of our greatest plantspeople, but ensures that we must always remember plants are front and centre stage on Earth . . . always!' -- Arit Anderson, garden designer, presenter Gardeners' World"The book every gardener needs." -- Claire Masset * Author, Secret Gardens of the National Trust, via Twitter *"Darryl Moore has been revolutionising how we grow in cities for the past decade and picked up a medal for his city-friendly design at RHS Chelsea this year. To avert further climate crisis and biodiversity loss, we need to rethink our relationship with plants. Gardening in a Changing World covers many complex topics, but it does so in short, digestible chapters and a lucid style...It will alter the way you garden." * Garden Design Journal *"The book forms a new intellectualism towards the use of plants. Moore's book cites more than 300 sources showing how recent developments in horticulture and plant science show how gardens can be better for humans and other lifeforms." -- Matthew Appleby * Horticulture Week *"Darryl Moore explores how our humble gardens could be key to saving us all from the climate crisis. He turns our enjoyment of plants on its head, showing how their vital importance to the future of the planet is even more beautiful than their aesthetic appeal. The book also draws on recent scientific research to offer guidance into changing our gardening habits and rethinking the design and use of our outside spaces for sustainable, future-proof gardens." * Evening Standard *"Hugely informative" * Amateur Gardening *"Gardening in a Changing World sets a new high-water mark in our individual and collective understanding and appreciation of the art and science of ecological planting design. A book for any ecologically-minded gardener or design professional looking to seriously sharpen and elevate their knowledge, awareness, and skill levels." * The New Perennialist *"A fascinating exploration of how gardens can be better for human beings, with reference to recent plant science that demonstrates the need to have a new attitude to plants beyond aesthetics. Metropolitan Museum of Art Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield,
Book SynopsisNineteenth-century stoneware by enslaved and free potters living in Edgefield, South Carolina, highlights the central role of Black artists in the region’s long-standing pottery traditions Recentering the development of industrially scaled Southern pottery traditions around enslaved and free Black potters working in the mid-nineteenth century, this catalogue presents groundbreaking scholarship and new perspectives on stoneware made in and around Edgefield, South Carolina. Among the remarkable works included are a selection of regional face vessels as well as masterpieces by enslaved potter and poet David Drake, who signed, dated, and incised verses on many of his jars, even though literacy among enslaved people was criminalized at the time. Essays on the production, collection, dispersal, and reception of stoneware from Edgefield offer a critical look at what it means to collect, exhibit, and interpret objects made by enslaved artisans. Several featured contemporary works inspired by or related to Edgefield stoneware attest to the cultural and historical significance of this body of work, and an interview with acclaimed contemporary artist Simone Leigh illuminates its continued relevance.Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art/Distributed by Yale University PressExhibition Schedule:The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (September 9, 2022–February 5, 2023) Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (March 6–July 9, 2023) University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor (August 26, 2023–January 7, 2024) High Museum of Art, Atlanta (February 16–May 12, 2024)
