Pimpernel Press Ltd The Gardener's Book of Colour
Book SynopsisA revised and updated edition of Andrew Lawson’s classic work Andrew Lawson has an artist’s eye, a scientist’s training and long experience as both a gardener and a photographer of gardens. In this book he calls on all his skills and practical knowledge to illuminate the complex subject of using colour in the garden and to demonstrate the extraordinary power of colour to change the sense of space, to suggest coolness or warmth and to evoke different moods. The Gardener’s Book of Colour shows how to put colours together in garden beds, borders and containers, explaining how to construct harmonizing and contrasting schemes and exuberant displays of mixed colour. All the major schemes are supported by keyline drawings giving full planting details. In addition, illustrated plant directories, arranged by colour and flowering season, provide cultivation details for over 850 plants, enabling you to assemble the right plants for your chosen scheme and to carry that scheme through the year. Authoritative and accessible, The Gardener’s Book of Colour will stimulate your imagination and put exciting new ideas within your grasp. Whether you want an instant splash of brilliant seasonal colour or a sumptuous border with subtle year-round appeal, this book will show you how to achieve it.Trade Review"A reprint of an old favourite, my original copy is dog-eared and tattered with love. Whenever I am puzzling about where to fit a plant in the garden or design a scheme, this sourcebook proves invaluable with plants categorised by colour and images featuring various combinations of hues." * Image magazine *"thoroughly revised and updated....spectacularly illuminating illustrations, the book sets out above all to help you find both what individual colours and what combinations work best for you throughout the year. In short, invaluable." -- David Sexton * Evening Standard Best Gardening Books of 2015 *'The Gardener's Book of Colour is a classic, written 20 yeras ago, re-released in a different format. This is a much more compact book, one with a life away from the coffee table, one that can be carried and read and referred to. Basic understanding of colour...is an essential tool, which makes Lawson's book as relevant as ever.' * Sunday Telegraph *'Whatever the size of your garden, there is inspiring advice to be had from the definitive work on the subject. The photographs in this hugely helpful book are superb.....There's no likelihood of failures in planning if you absorb the lessons of this impressive book, and it is as delightful in its minor suggestions as it is persuasive on the loftier issues...Authoritative and reader-friendly, this is an essential book for the gardener's library.' * The Lady *'This excellent book tells you all you need to know about brightening up your garden. "Colour is the most potent weapon in a gardener’s armoury," says Lawson in this revised and updated edition of his authoritative guide, which offers helpful tips and stunning photographs to show how to keep the colour interest alive in every season.' * Daily Mail *'As well thought out and thorough as it is possible such a book to be ... but of course, it is the big photographs in the book that make it special. And not just because some of them are captivatingly beautiful, but because they are all organically related to the text.' * The Oldie *‘At the top of the heap of gardening glitterati, Andrew Lawson has produced a book that combines all his talents: it gives you this Renaissance man as painter, photographer, writer and gardener . . . You need this book.’ * Country Living *'He talks with reassuring simplicity on such basic yet essential matters as light saturation, tones and colour distribution, so that newcomers to gardening, as well as old hands, will find themselves understanding the huge and potentially complex subject of colour in the garden. This is a constructive book, and beautiful, too.' * Hortus *‘The word “definitive” makes me nervous, but once you have The Gardener’s Book of Colour, I should be surprised if you ever needed another book on the subject.’ -- Ursula Buchan * Sunday Telegraph *

Scheidegger und Spiess AG, Verlag Soviet Design: From Constructivism To Modernism.
Book SynopsisThe Soviet Union has left a vast heritage in interior design that is largely unknown in the West. Other than architecture and graphic or product design, interior design from the Soviet era has not yet been thoroughly investigated. For the first time ever, this book offers a comprehensive survey of the country's interior design culture between revolutionary avant-garde and late Soviet modernism. Drawing on archives that were inaccessible until recently and featuring a wealth of previously unpublished material, it documents the achievements of seven decades in the former socialist empire. Soviet design is often discredited as massive, non-ergonomic and monotonous. Yet a remarkable variety of original styles have emerged behind the iron curtain. The 1920s were marked by bold exploration and experiments at Vkhutemas and by constructivism, rationalism, and suprematism. Early in Stalin's reign constructivism was heavily criticised and post-constructivism and Soviet neo-classicism appeared alongside what became known as 'agitational furniture', inspired by the regime's propaganda. The 1930s brought Soviet Art Deco and eventually Stalinist Empire, which has produced some of the Soviet Union's most iconic buildings. In the late 1950s, after Stalin's death, the last Soviet 'big style' originated modernist and functionalist furniture, mass-produced to fit the small apartments in the Khrushchyovka multi-unit housing developments that were built in cities on a large scale. The 1960s mark the Golden Age of Soviet interior design, showing again influences by the early Soviet Avant-Garde and the Bauhaus, while most of the visionary work of a new generation of designers in the 1970s and 1980s remained unrealised.

Quarto Publishing PLC Virginia Woolf's Garden: The Story of the Garden
Book SynopsisMonk's House in Sussex is the former home of Leonard and Virginia Woolf. It was bought by them in 1919 as a country retreat, somewhere they came to read, write and work in the garden. From the overgrown land behind the house they created a brilliant patchwork of garden rooms, linked by brick paths, secluded behind flint walls and yew hedges. The story of this magical garden is the subject of this book and the author has selected quotations from the writings of the Woolfs which reveal how important a role the garden played in their lives, as a source of both pleasure and inspiration. Virginia wrote most of her major novels at Monk's House, at first in a converted tool shed, and later in her purpose-built wooden writing lodge tucked into a corner of the orchard. Caroline Zoob lived with her husband, Jonathan, at Monk's House for over a decade as tenants of the National Trust, and has an intimate knowledge of the garden they tended and planted. The photographer, Caroline Arber, was a frequent visitor to the house during their tenancy and her spectacular photographs, published here for the first time, often reveal the garden as it is never seen by the public: at dawn, in the depths of winter, at dusk. The photographs and text, enriched with rare archive images and embroidered garden plans, take the reader on a journey through the various garden 'rooms', (including the Italian Garden, the Fishpond Garden, the Millstone Terrace and the Walled Garden). Each garden room is presented in the context of the lives of the Woolfs, with fascinating glimpses into their daily routines at Rodmell. This beautiful book is an absorbing account of the creation of a garden which will appeal equally to gardeners and those with an interest in Virginia and Leonard Woolf.Trade Review"a thoughtful, intelligent account of restoring the garden at Rodmell as the tenant of the National Trust." Book SynopsisAmerican Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds, published to coincide with an exhibition at the American Folk Art Museum, reveals the beauty, historical significance, and technical virtuosity of American vanes fashioned between the late seventeenth and early twentieth centuries. This American art form has long been an enduring part of the country's skylines. Early church steeples were graced with weathercocks, following a European tradition that dates to the MiddleAges. America's first documented vane maker, metalsmith Shem Drowne of Boston, crafted a number of surviving vanes, including the iconic golden grasshopper that has topped the city's Faneuil Hall since 1742. Farmers, blacksmiths, and other craftsmen proudly fashioned roosters, cows, horses, and other forms for country barns, and as the tradition and public demand expanded over the course of the nineteenth century, so did the diversity of forms, which grew to fill the mail order catalogs of commercial manufacTrade Review“American Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds is visually engaging, combining much new photography of the best American vanes with an arresting assortment of archival material, some of it recently uncovered and published for the first time. Expanded biographical profiles of the commercial makers who flourished in Boston and New York before and after the Civil War form the meaty heart of the study, which Shaw enlivens with fresh narrative detail.” —ANTIQUES & ARTS WEEKLY“American Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds, published to coincide with an exhibition at the American Folk Art Museum, reveals the beauty, historical significance, and technical virtuosity of American vanes fashioned between the late 17th and early 20th centuries. Today, weathervanes hold a well-established place in the canon of American folk art, and American Weathervanes celebrates this artistry in the most up-to-date and authoritative work on the subject. Lavishly illustrated with masterworks from prominent private and public collections, this is a book to be treasured by anyone who collects or simply admires American vernacular art and sculpture.” ANTIQUES & AUCTION NEWS“Robert Shaw’s long-awaited American Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds is a book much needed. With color photographs of the finest weathervanes in public and private collections, this well-documented story of the invention, manufacture, and collecting of weathervanes recognizes them as art, a special category of American sculpture.” —MAINE ANTIQUES DIGEST"Vane Endeavors: ANY SELF-RESPECTING FARMER can raise a wet finger to find out how the wind is blowing. Though weathervanes have been around for millennia, they have always been more decorative than practical, writes Robert Shaw in the new book American Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds (Rizzoli Electa), published to accompany an exhibition opening in June at the American Folk Art Museum in New York. The book surveys four centuries of vanes by American craftsmen, in the shape of dragons, eagles, angels, champion racehorses, foxes, witches, snakes and cows." —WALL STREET JOURNAL"The best exhibition I’ve seen in New York this summer is American Weathervanes: The Art of the Winds at the American Folk Art Museum. It’s easily the most enchanting display I’ve seen in a while… I can’t praise the book’s usefulness and beauty enough and want to add that the exhibition we see follows the scholarly catalogue in organization.” —NATIONAL REVIEW

Taunton Press Inc Taunton′s Complete Illustrated Guide to Jigs &
Book SynopsisThis is a new addition to the popular Complete Illustrated Guide series, covering all there is to know about jigs and fixtures. It is an essential and popular element of woodworking. It includes over 800 photographs and 50 illustrations. This book, in the Complete Illustrated Guide format covers jigs and fixtures, a subject of perennial interest to woodworkers. Jigs, simply put, are devices, sometimes shop-made but now often available commercially to enable woodworkers to do something more than once. For example, some jigs are fences that ensure straight cuts or templates capable of guiding tools to create a certain shape time after time. Woodworkers love jigs and fixtures for the same reason they are drawn to woodworking: designing them is about figuring out how to do something. All woodworkers are secretly engineers and inventors, and jig design and construction is a way to indulge that need. Simple or elaborate, jigs are an essential part of woodworking. This book, authored by prominent woodworking author Sandor Nagyszalanczy, is organized according to function. This approach allows woodworkers to either build the jig exactly as shown or modify it to suit a wide variety of purposes.

Shanghai Press Literati Style Penjing: Chinese Bonsai
Book SynopsisThe art of bonsai is widely known in the West: from the Karate Kid to the American Bonsai Association and even local grocery stores, bonsai has become a common sight in the States. But bonsai, the Japanese art of creating miniature trees, actually originated in China, where it's called penjing. Penjing, meaning "tray scenery," is a traditional Chinese art of creating miniature potted landscapes including trees and other plants. Brought from China to Japan in ancient times before spreading to the West, bonsai/penjing is now popular throughout the world. In China, the art of creating miniature landscapes has evolved in several different ways. Literati Style Penjing: Chinese Bonsai Masterworks focuses on a special category of penjing associated with traditional Chinese culture, such as the painting of the literati, or elite scholar-bureaucrats, of imperial China. Like literati ink paintings, this style of penjing has a subtle elegance distinguished by a lone, lean trunk with sparse foliage exhibiting distinct lines and simplicity. The term "literati style penjing" has been widely accepted by the bonsai community and is becoming more common within the bonsai world. It is well suited to melding concepts from Chinese painting, poetry and Zen into a stunning bonsai work, making it of interest to a wide variety of gardening styles. Literati Style Penjing; Chinese Bonsai Masterworks explains the concept of penjing with a literati bent, exploring its rich history and aesthetics, as well as cultivation techniques, and care and maintenance. It includes 12 examples of literati style penjing creations, which incorporate a deep knowledge of the art form together with practical creativity and artistic beauty. Lovers of bonsai will find much to inspire and delight within these pages.

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Fringe, Frog and Tassel: The Art of the
Book SynopsisLavishly illustrated with new photography, Fringe, Frog and Tassel is the first survey of the history, design and use of trimmings in the historic interiors of Britain and Ireland. Trimmings are often overlooked as mere details of a furnished interior. However, in the past they were seen as vital and costly elements in the decoration of a room. They were used not only on curtains and beds but also on wall hangings, upholstered seat furniture and cushions, providing a visual feast for the eye with their colour and intricate detail. Sometimes more expensive than the rich fabrics they enhanced, trimmings are often the only surviving evidence of a lost decorative scheme, reapplied to replacement textiles or found as fragments in the attic. This book, the first of its kind, traces their history in Britain and Ireland from 1320 to 1970, examining the design and usage of tassels, fringe, braid (woven lace), gimp and cord and their dependence on French fashion. The substantial text links surviving items in historic houses and museums to written evidence, paintings, drawings and other primary sources to provide a firm framework for dating pieces of less-certain provenance. The importance of the ‘laceman’, the maker of these trimmings, is also examined within an economic and social context, together with the relationship to the upholsterer and interior decorator in the creation of a fashionable room.Trade Reviewan extraordinary work of dedicated scholarship … this book is an essential one for the library of anyone with a serious interest in country-house decoration. -- Jeremy Musson * Country Life *Lavishly illustrated, with fascinating tales … [Westman] paints a vivid picture of how trimmings evolved throughout different ages and styles. * The English Home *…a triumph of research, textual and visual, with a sustained attention to detail. Richly illustrated and packed with information, it looks set to become the standard text in its field. -- Christopher Stocks * House & Garden *…simultaneously highly erudite and richly luxurious… -- Michael Hall * The Victorian *This is a sumptuous book, which traces the history of trimmings for furnishing and interior decoration in Britain and Ireland, … lavishly illustrated with new colour photography and impregnated with sound scholarship from the leading expert in the field. -- Lisa White * The Furniture History Society *The book is a physical and beautifully visual distillation of Westman’s knowledge, with lavish illustrations, frequently extending over two pages...a glorious, detailed and readable study… an invaluable tool to rediscover lost decoration. -- Susan Jenkins * The Georgian *An immediate clue to the subject matter of this teasingly titled book is its beautiful presentation: what might be considered a niche topic is here revealed as an essential aspect of interior decoration and for long periods by far the most glamorous and conspicuously expensive… No scholar could be better placed than Annabel Westman to write this book, which is informed by forty years’ experience of researching and implementing reinstallations of historic upholstery schemes. It will prove invaluable to a wide readership, including economic and social historians, historians of taste and interior decoration (not only of furniture and upholstery), curators and those engaged in historic reconstructions, as well as designers and decorators seeking inspiration. The book will not be superseded. -- Lucy Wood * The Burlington *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Introduction 1. The Role of the Silkwoman 1320-1550 2. The Role of the Silkman 1550-1660 3. Schiffer Publishing Ltd C141 Starlifter
Book SynopsisThe Lockheed C-141 Starlifter was a new-build design by Lockheed and proved adaptable to many roles, from carrying outsized cargo to dropping paratroops. The C-141 was used in difficult environmental conditions, such as the heat and extreme humidity of Vietnam, the deserts of the Middle East, and the frozen ice pack of Antarctica. The plane was a valued and appreciated USAF asset in numerous missions, from disaster aid and humanitarian relief to doing their part in Operation Desert Shield/Storm, and in the war on terror. The aircraft were eventually retired en masse in 2006 simply as a result of wear and tear. This book covers in detail all aspects such as interior/exterior configurations, cargo capabilities, missions, and modifications made throughout its service life.

Idea & Design Works The Art of Pulp Fiction: An Illustrated History
Book SynopsisJudge these books by their covers! Get immersed in the definitive visual history of pulp fiction paperbacks from 1940 to 1970.The Art of Pulp Fiction: An Illustrated History of Vintage Paperbacks chronicles the history of pocket-sized paperbound books designed for mass-market consumption, specifically concentrating on the period from 1940 to 1970. These three decades saw paperbacks eclipse cheap pulp magazines and expensive clothbound books as the most popular delivery vehicle for escapist fiction. To catch the eyes of potential buyers they were adorned with covers that were invariably vibrant, frequently garish, and occasionally lurid. Today the early paperbacks--like the earlier pulps, inexpensively produced and considered disposable by casual readers--are treasured collector''s items.Award-winning editor Ed Hulse (The Art of the Pulps and The Blood ''n'' Thunder Guide to Pulp Fiction) comprehensively covers the pulp-fiction paperback''s heyday. Hulse writes the individual chapter introductions and the captions, while a team of genre specialists and art aficionados contribute the special features included in each chapter. These focus on particularly important authors, artists, publishers, and sub-genres. Illustrated with more than 500 memorable covers and original cover paintings. Hulse''s extensive captions, meanwhile, offer a running commentary on this significant genre, and also contain many obscure but entertaining factoids. Images used in The Art of Pulp Fiction have been sourced from the largest American paperback collections in private hands, and have been curated with rarity in mind, as well as graphic appeal. Consequently, many covers are reproduced here for the first time since the books were first issued. With an overall Introduction by Richard A. Lupoff, novelist, essayist, pop-culture historian, and author of The Great American Paperback (2001).

Book SynopsisAn introduction to the raucous yet educational ‘gap year’ tours of Europe taken by wealthy British aristocrats in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. For many young eighteenth-century aristocrats, the Grand Tour was an essential rite of passage. Spending many months travelling established routes through France and Italy, they would visit the great cultural sites of western Europe – from Paris, through to Venice, Florence and Rome – ostensibly absorbing art, architecture and culture. Yet all too often, it was a gateway to gambling and debauchery. In this beautifully illustrated guide, Mike Rendell shows how the tour reached its zenith, examining the young tourists’ activities and how they acquired ‘polish’ and an appreciation for fashion, opera and classical antiquity. He also explores their passion for souvenirs and art collecting, and how these items made their way back to grand country houses, which were themselves often modelled to the rules of classical European architecture.Table of ContentsIntroduction Along the Way From the Great Collectors … … To the Souvenir Hunters Artists and Patronage The English Country House Women on Tour Drawbacks and Downsides Further Reading Places to Visit Index
