The author's use of exotic woods and interesting designs are sure to inspire woodworkers, chess players and scroll saw enthusiasts alike.Trade ReviewCheckmate! Here is a book fit for kings, queens and knights and a book not to be pawned. I, with my sick humor could not work a rook into my diatribe. In any event, this is a fantastic and inspiring book for all woodworkers. In a word, unique! This is perhaps the best way of describing the contents of this book. Author Kape has a great imagination and it is well projected in this fabulous book. There are, as the cover suggests, 15 one-of-a-kind projects for the scroll saw. There is a classic and two neo-classic sets that are close to traditional but certainly unique as cut with the scrollsaw. There is also a set reminiscent of the Knights of the Round Table, a classic Greek set, a Czarist set and an Olde English set. Add these to the architectural collection like Paris, Canterbury, Venice, Rome and San Francisco and you have a fully rounded out chess set collection that is to die for. Now, if you were counting you will realize that the list is short by four. These are made up by the author's plans for a chess board, a travelling chess board, a storage box and a vertical wall mounted chess set. Kape provides the sawyer with full plans and scale drawings for all of the above as well as a full list of materials. As an avid chess player and/or a scroll sawyer you will really appreciate this book.by Jim Kape has detailed instructions for making 13 different chess sets as well as a chess board and a storage box. There are full size patterns for the different pieces and the designs range from a classic or traditional set to some unique designs based on the architecture of different cities. For example, the Peter the Great set is based on historic architecture of Russia, the Canterbury is English inspired, and Paris includes the Eiffel Tower as the king. The book also includes a list of tools used and says that the scroll saw and tablesaw are the two most often used. There is even a short history of the game and basic rules of play.Woodshop library Posted on January 17, 2011 Written by Jennifer Hicks User Rating: / 0Poor Best A REVOLUTION IN WOOD: THE BRESLER COLLECTION AN EXHIBIT CATALOG, edited by Nicholas Bell, of 66 turned and carved wood objects donated to the Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery by artists Fleur and Charles Bresler. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Men Who Would Be Kings
Book SynopsisThe Men Who Would Be Kings is a set of rules designed for fighting historical or Hollywood colonial battles in the mid- to late-Nineteenth Century, from the Indian Mutiny to the Boxer Rebellion. Large scale colonial clashes tended to be one-sided affairs, but there are countless reports of brief, frantic skirmishes in every colonial war--where either side could be victorious--and these are the battles that The Men Who Would Be Kings seeks to recreate. Although focusing on the British colonial wars against the Zulus, Maoris, and others, these rules will also permit players to explore the empires of France, Germany, and other nations, as well as allowing for battles between rival native factions. Gameplay is very simple, and is driven by the quality of the officers leading your units, in the true spirit of Victorian derring-do and adventure, where larger than life characters such as the (real) Fred Burnaby and the (fictional) Harry Flashman led their troops to glory and medTable of ContentsOverview/ Understanding the basics/ Playing the game/ Army lists/ Strategies and tactics/ Sample armies/ Scenarios/ Campaigns

C & T Publishing Thread Stories: A Visual Guide to Creating
Book SynopsisTell captivating stories in fabric and thread! Acclaimed quilting artist Jennifer Day invites you to create realistic portrait quilts with thread painting. Turn your own photos of people and animals into one-of-a-kind story quilts, as you learn to masterfully stitch in the details. This step-by-step visual guide takes you from photo selection to editing, printing on fabric, thread painting, and free-motion quilting. With just a home sewing machine, quilters of all experience levels can capture and quilt life’s precious memories. Step-by-step visual guide to realistic portrait quilts, using your home sewing machine Print your own photos on fabric and tell one-of-a-kind thread stories Thread painting techniques anyone can apply to get that WOW! factor From award-winning quilter, artist, and teacher Jennifer DayTrade ReviewDay's photo-realistic quilts have been displayed at national and international quilt shows, museums, and the UN in Geneva. Her technique, which uses machine-sewn thread painting on top of a photograph printed on canvas, yields extraordinary detail and surprising texture. The author takes quilters through the various steps of her process, from selecting, editing, and preparing a photograph to printing on fabric to techniques for stitching a variety of details, including eyes, hair, and skin. Unfortunately, there are a number of unanswered questions, since Day jumps from the basics of preparing to thread paint directly to working with intricate details. This may leave beginners floundering as they try to figure out where and how to begin. A gallery of work from Day's students complements the numerous samples of the author's own work. VERDICT Day's quilts are inspiring, but the complexity of her techniques may be overwhelming, especially to quilters new to these methods. This distinct book is best suited to people with some background in machine-based thread painting. Library Journal, July 23, 2015 Many of us have seen thread painting and have marvelled at the level of realism achieved. Now here is your chance to learn how to do it. All the basics are covered, such as the photo to choose, how to print and the threads to use. No special equipment is required, because the stitching is done on a regular sewing machine. The devil, they say, is in the detail, and Jennifer provides that detail to ensure the finished product is true to the original. The book has step-by-step help and guidance, so you don't have to be particularly experience to be able to achieve a great picture.
